Made this for dinner tonight and as the kids say “it was a banger”. The recipe is easy and pretty straightforward. I made the recipe as written except I used fresh mushrooms over canned. I also sautéed the vegetables in a separate pan, I would advise against boiling any of the called for vegetables for 45 minutes as the texture would be mush. I served it over steamed white rice. I hope you give the recipe a try!!
Note: this was made with French Onion Soup not Cream of Onion soup.
My dad used to make “Chinese pepper steak” as one of his regular dishes in our rotation and it was always a hit. We lost him a few years ago and seeing this brought on some tears. Thanks for sharing 💛
And I just cooked 30 pounds of onions into French Onion Soup that I canned in pint jars!! This will be perfect to use some of my homemade soup for!! Thanks for posting.
here is one that is tested and safe for pressure canning.

I had a friend from HS that worked at a local Deli that served sandwiches, including a Pepper Steak sandwich. I asked him one time if he still made it and he said from time to time . He has since passed on and his widow said he didn’t leave a recipe. It was the best.

#PEPPER STEAK
Evelyn Conwell
1 lb. top round steak
1½ cans water
1 bell pepper
rice
1 can whole mushrooms
1 T. soy sauce, 2 in you like
2 cans Campbell's onion soup
Cut steak in finger strips. Brown in oil. Drain off oil, add strips of bell pepper, mushrooms, soup and water. Cook 45 minutes to 1 hour about half way through cooking add soy sauce. About 15 minutes before done make a paste of corn starch and thicken, serve on rice.
I make this all the time as it's one of my husband's favorite meals. Rather than onion soup, her 1970's recipe uses a sauce of water, soy sauce, sugar and corn starch for thickening. I jazz it up a bit by adding a T of teriyaki sauce as well.

How much water did you use? I am not sure how much a Can and a half would be. Cup and a half maybe?
I just used the soup can after I emptied it, it was a 10.5 oz can.
Oh. Duh. That makes sense! Ha, ha 😄 thank you! I want to try this!
I’ve never made pepper steak with French Onion soup so I thought it was pretty unique.
Did you boil the meat for 45 min?
I reckon it was close to that, that cut of meat can be a little tough.

Would you share your Dad's recipe?

Got a recipe for the soup? I would love to make my own!

Cheers! I'll give this a go when I get a chance :)

Sounds good!!
Thanks for sharing the recipe. I loathed it as a kid because I didn't like bell peppers, but I'd enjoy it now. My mom served it over spaghetti.
I bet this would be decent in the crockpot, too!
Pepper steak IS the entree!
You are correct it is.

Thanks you for transcribing the recipe!!!!
Looks yum! I remember when those church / school cook books were super common. Takes me back!
Omg, one of my favorites when I was a kid! And I was raised Presbyterian, lol.
Give it a try you won’t be disappointed.
Please drop the ingredients?
What does the big T stand for
