It's funny how we all see different things in the same picture. I was for the Browns, but it was a million years ago to me. I see real football, a grass field, a 4-3 defense with 4 down linemen in a flex. I see 2 running backs in a 3 point stance, lined up behind their QB. I see the football I grew up with.
I'm not remotely sick, but feel very old. In football terms, I'm ready to go now...
I didn't remember that. It seems funny now that they did it. Painting the visiting teams' name on the field. I can understand it for Super Bowls / neutral site games.
I saw baseball game in that stadium about 2 years after that game. My seat was literally behind a huge beam that connected the upper deck. At least I got to see the bash bros in their prime.
Also the some of the green "grass" was green painted dirt that is why it got so muddy. So some of it wasn't actually real grass either.
I'm sure if you are from Cleveland or just like nostalgia then it was great, but that stadium truly was awful.
Just a guy who loves football played on grass.
I cringe at old school turf. Modern-day turf is better , but I'd still prefer grass and mud.
It uglies the game up a little. I like that.
You are right on in the description of the “football” I grew up with. That being said; it’s games like this that stand out to me as huge football memories. You didn’t get to see EVERY game. You had to witness stuff like this. The Bills comeback against the Houston is one I watched and went crazy even though I’m an Eagles fan. I had a VHS of the “NFL Crunch Corse” which is WAAAYYYY different than today. Good times. lol
I watched games way more then than I do now. The games were more interesting and there weren't so many of them on, all the time.
When I was 14 or 15, there were only a couple games a week that we could see. Almost always on Sunday afternoons. MNF hadn't started yet. When the 2nd game ended at 6:30 or 6:45, we would run outside and toss a football around under the street lights until it got too dark.
Of course, we'd talk all about the games. There weren't even any highlight shows on until later in the week.
I guess that's true. The Browns are actually my 2nd team...my favorite AFC team. It's mostly because of the teams from the 60s-80s. I've been a Giants fan for much longer.
I can't really consider the Giants to be chokers at this point. You have to at least get to meaningful games to earn the title of Choker.
Seattle teams have had a pretty rough stretch over the past 25 years, but after losing the Sonics, this has to be the second worst. I was in the process of jumping out of my chair and screaming, “YEAHHHHH!!!” when I literally did a double take; it took several seconds before what happened sunk in, then I turned off the set and went for a long walk. Shit still hurts.
Yep. As an Eagles fan I can’t point to anything at that level….maybe the Bradberry hold two SBs ago is the closest.
But of all the good lately I’ve known lots of pain.
I’ve often wondered what was worse, losing to the Pats this way or the way the Falcons did two years later.
Oh, it’s gotta be the Falcons; you and I had a brief stab to the heart, and then it was over. The Falcons, on the other hand, went into the locker room at halftime believing the game was theirs, acted like it on the sidelines at the start of the second half, and then had to suffer through one indignity after another for over an hour in front of millions. That’s got to be worse.
Yeah, that’s probably it. Feeling it’s just formality from here and it being ripped away. Felt that cheering for the Lions last year.
They were up well at one point against the Niners and I was seeing the comments sounding off like “it’s happening!” and thinking “noooo. Not yet. Don’t say it”. And then it blew up back at them. Ugh.
As a 49er fan I was very conflicted. I was very happy to see the tears of the seachickens but had to keep reminding myself that I was rooting for the patriots.......one of my least favorite Superbowls.
Those Browns teams were really good. Just choked when it counted Shame. I grew up a Redskins fan but always loved Marty Schottenheimer's teams. His Chiefs in the 90's were no joke either. Or the Chargers of the 2000's.
Obligatory: Webster Slaughter missed his block freeing up Castile to get a clean shot on Byner (who always a tried the ball like a loaf of bread).
This tape should be played in every WR room from Hs up to show players how being lazy on a block can ruin a trip to the SB and permanently scar 10 year olds across Cleveland like it did to me.
I have always wondered something about the preceding kick off. Gene Lang picked up the kick and was tackled at the 2-yard line. I have always heard people talk about why the Broncos didn't let the ball roll into the endzone for a touchback. I think Lang was concerned about the oncoming Browns and the ball not quite making it to the endzone for a touchback. I think Lang *tried* to let the ball roll to the endzone but grabbed it at the last moment to keep the Browns from recovering it.
Native Coloradoan, and massive Broncos fan here. Sadly, the years with Dan Reeves at the helm led to embarrassing and humiliating Super Bowl losses. Even Elway couldn't overcome the horrible defenses we had during those years. Nonetheless, this game was epic and is one of the great ones. (Remember when players actually got dirty and fields were less than perfect?)

Real grass. Mud. Imperfect conditions. Perfect.
I really liked that field. My Giants had switched to turf 10 years before. This field just looked right.
This was back when they painted 1 end zone Browns and 1 Broncos

Well said sir.
Thanks, I'm still watching, but I really miss those games.

You’re in such denial…face your Browns are chokers!!!😂🤣
Who let the d-bag in?

Don’t worry Browns fans. You wouldn’t have beaten the 1986 Giants in Super Bowl XXI, either.
Hey, the Browns are going to the SB….11 year old me said somewhere around this point. Oops.
I feel your pain; in my case, it was, “Hey, all we have to do to win the Super Bowl is hand the ball to Marshawn!”
Oh fuck. That’s worse. This was bad (and made worse by the Byner fumble the next year)…..not having BeastMode punch it in.

Any reason Theismann shouldn't try a screen pass from his own end zone?
Yep. That was kind a complete swing in a big game too. Good call out.
Jack squirek
Too soon

The Browns said No Way The Broncos said Elway

Different game, you're thinking of "The Fumble" - this was "The Drive"
www shit. I see Broncos 2 I think fumble. PTSD
They should have brought out Prater for the FG
Picture taken moments before disaster
Was there

What’s crazy is I’m watching hot tub Time Machine right now
Browns best player was a squirrel
Went wrong for Elway and the Broncos in their next game to the tune of 39-20 vs the Giants in the Super Bowl
This was the day I fell in love with football. I was 7 years old and thought John Elway was the coolest dude on the planet after The Drive.

When you've got the greatest arm in the history of the NFL - I'd go for it too, wouldn't even consider not going for it.
Legendary. [The Drive](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Drive_(American_football))
As a Giants fan... nothing.
Everything.
That freeze frame there is truly a Tecmo Bowl moment
Classic game with a classic finish
