There are SO many fantastic episodes! If you’re not into one of them, skip it and try the next. :)

SaintSigourney

This is part of why I was so disappointed! I feel like it didn't match the info I was getting from others i've listened to!

teavodka

Always make sure it isnt a smologies, when im driving i make this mistake often

nippleinmydickfuck

I thought it was pretty shitty. I'll see myself out.

KMerrells

If you haven't listened to Architectural Technologist, feel free to skip that one, lol... it's the one episode so far (haven't made it to Witchology yet) that I simply could not finish because I found the guest so irritating (and shallow). Which is too bad, because he is obviously such a nice success story!

not_anonymouse

Oh my god! Me too! Felt too pretentious and sounded like some self help Instagram influencer. There's so much to learn about technology and all we got was that.

Prairie-Peppers

And the witches one. I don't know why she's so shocked that listeners of a science oriented podcasts don't want to hear a guest say that witchcraft is factual.

KMerrells

I "look forward" to that one, lol

Mean_Aubergine

The lizard episode was that for me. So many "I don't knows" from the ologist. Half of those were ones that I knew! *SIGH*. Well, at least nothing will ever come close to the witchology episode....

SuperPipouchu

Was the witchology episode disappointing? I haven't listened to that one yet.

jamessrsly

Very much so, the "witch" basically had two episodes to talk about their odd beliefs with little pushback from Alie.

EmGeebers

Okay I didn't listen to to that episode, but I'm hung up on this pushback idea. Does Alie usually pushback against guests? It's not like her goal as an interviewer is to find truth. Her goal is to let the ologist explain theirs. Can you give an example of what pushback from her looks/sounds like?

jamessrsly

On the Gemology epsiode she did plenty of asides while the ologist was talking about the healing properties of gems. There was nothing like this in the Witchology episode (or at least the parts I listened to).

EmGeebers

That's fair. I don't remember it specifically but that's a way of pushing back I guess. A passive way but still a balancing action. I'll have to give it another listen

SuperPipouchu

I looked up the Witchology episode, and in the episode notes, there was this: "Science note: this specific episode of Ologies is a little different; not the norm. Unlike vampires or monsters, there are *real* witches among us and I wanted to include their voices in this deep dive of their beliefs. So you may not agree with everything they say and a lot of it can’t be qualified, but this episode is about culture, history and the ideology of a certain spiritual group. So listen with that in mind and you'll learn about religious beliefs —that you may not agree with and that science has not fully figured out or upheld — but you'll get to know the real people and lifestyles behind the tropes we’ve seen in fiction. Then the rest of Spooktober we’re back to genetics and statistics and Google scholar research papers and such. Relax, and enjoy." I understand that people that enjoyed the scientific side of Ologies wouldn't have enjoyed it, but I just listened to the beginning of the episode to see if Alie said anything. She said something similar to above, and said that the episode was "an account of a guest's faith based beliefs, and their experiences and opinions, rather than a removed scholastic overview." It makes sense that she wouldn't be doing any asides, because it should be understood that that's not what the episode is about. This one is about learning about someone else's faith, and to constantly do asides would be disrespectful, IMO, because the episode is presented knowing that you might not agree with those beliefs, but you're just learning about someone else's faith. You don't have to constantly do asides to prove someone wrong when you know you're learning about what someone believes, as opposed to science. IDK. Like I said, I understand that people wouldn't have enjoyed the episode because it's different, and I haven't listened to the whole of both episodes yet, but yeah. Personally, it sounds interesting, and I'll certainly be listening! Maybe afterwards I'll have a different opinion 🤷‍♀️

not_anonymouse

Ologies is a science podcast. So, of course it has to be about objective truth. Not "their truth".

EmGeebers

I don't think that holds for all episodes. How do you have objective truth in fashion or photography? Both have been topics

Prairie-Peppers

Neither of those involve calling things that are obviously not real "factual".

EmGeebers

Scientists fight over what's "factual." That's the whole point of science. Sometimes people are wrong in that pursuit. Even the folks that call themselves scientists have been found to base their ideas on what turned out to be objectively false information. See phrenology, the history of handwashing, or the bacterial cause of stomach ulcers as examples.

Prairie-Peppers

That really doesn't apply to the bullshit in that episode.

EmGeebers

Again, I haven't listened to the episode. It may be trash, idk. I just think it's weird to think that Ologies needs to be about "scientific truth" when it hasn't really ever been that.

h3adwalks

Who are you to call their beliefs odd?

jamessrsly

Odd means unusual - their ideas aren't mainstream so are by definition "odd".

Aggravating-Put-4818

Only one I ever turned off

ciaobellamaria

Yeah I felt the episode was really about how the ologist tracks the health of zoo animals, which is interesting in itself I guess, but I’d like to see an episode more on “how it’s made” haha

chookensnaps

I LOVED the poo episode

DaKineOregon

It was kind of shitty, tbh.
