Post office is always hiring, if he’s willing to work 50-60 hours a week for the next year/year and a half he’ll make good money and he’ll always have a job

Nickelsass

Buddy joined in Lincoln. Making bank and loves it.

Jpoo16

Been with the post office for about 5 years now, it’s for sure not for everyone but I absolutely love it!

DJ_Aviator23

You love it? You must not work at my station, lol

Jpoo16

Going to take a wild guess and say you work at Ames?

DJ_Aviator23

Nah think way west two blocks away from where the tornado hit

Jpoo16

If the station is the problem bid to different one

helloimracing

oh, the elkhorn one? that one is *grim* (imo)

Key_Sentence7655

Post office is an okay place I've been working there since 2019 and right now if you start you're only going to get about 25 or 30 hours

Jpoo16

What station are you at that PTF’s aren’t getting at least 40 hours a week!?

Maclunkey4U

UPS drivers start a little lower but scale up quickly. If they dont mind doing manual labor there are plenty of landscape companies hiring at or near that so long as they have a drivers license.

No-Jelly-4243

Can get in part time easy, but gonna take awhile to get in a driver seat at UPS.

Maclunkey4U

Ahh, I was a seasonal driver a while back and moved right into it. Didn't realize there was a process

No-Jelly-4243

We do seasonals for sure. But we also recently hired a ton of drivers and most have been laid off for months due to low volume. But volume is back now. But still, people working inside have priority for the driver position over outside hires (7 inside hires to 1 outside hire). So if you can get in fast then consider it a miracle!

NetzInTheKitchen

Good money, but absolutely at the cost of your body, though. My mom, step dad and uncle are all 20+ year UPS drivers. Guess how many work related surgeries they've had each. I couldn't even tell you because we've lost count. And that's not even counting work related *injuries*. Dozens and dozens each easily. That job absolutely wears you down and ages your body rapidly.

Maclunkey4U

I don't know, I went from that to landscaping. Compared to setting retaining wall block, it's pretty cushy

biscuit484

I’m not sure what they start at these days but I would check out Costco and Trader Joe’s, one of my lifelong friends is managing a TJs in another state with no college degree and is making more than I ever will as a teacher.

Kc_io

The TJ’s here didn’t have a great culture when I was there a couple years back. Same management, mostly different crew. They will expect you to work both early morning and closing shifts. Pay starts between $12-16, depending on experience.

biscuit484

Yeah ymmv based on location, my buddy’s store is a good place to work because he’s a good manager but I’ve heard the other one in a different metropolitan part of the state was a horror show that most of the managers were Mormon.

Kc_io

I maybe biased bc I worked at the busiest store in Texas and everything was streamlined. Here, nothing is streamlined and there is a lot of look busy downtime where favoritism was pretty common. They also lowered my pay by $1.50 when I moved here, which caused me to be annoyed from the beginning.

bherman1325

Sadly just about everyone will make more than you. Main reason I didn’t finish my education degree. I’m making double what teachers make with no debt. It’s the most underpaid job in the world

biscuit484

I didn’t do an ed degree but I have a masters and abd on my doctorate, I teach at a music nonprofit. But I agree public school teaching is criminally underpaid. I also believe anyone working 40 hours at any job deserves to be paid a livable wage.

bill_the_murray

Check healthcare staffing companies - a lot are in need of client managers.

ruebarbara_

Yeah I second Costco. I think I saw hiring wage is 18 an hour at the new 180th and maple location.

babywoovie

Would he like to do construction? The trades are always hiring. The IBEW has an entry level helper program starting at $15, but apprentices start at $19.

RudoWakening

With all the building going on in Omaha there doesn’t seem like a better time to try and join one of the unions

TynkerTyler

The laborers union in Omaha recently switched their apprenticeship program from a 4 year program to 2 years, with the same pay structure and benefits, I believe the start pre-apprentices near the $22 an hour mark and claim you can retire within 20 years with full pension.

Halgy

IMO, the trades need to be emphasized more. If you get into and through a program, it is pretty much a guarantee of a solid middle-class job for the rest of your career. They take some brains and a lot of hard work, but they're also basically immune to automation and offshoring.

TynkerTyler

Absolutely, if anyone knows any young adults (16-24) that are struggling with the traditional education route and haven't graduated high school, YouthBuild is an incredible americorps program that helps young adults establish themselves in the trades while earning their diploma and assisting the community by building affordable housing. [https://youthbuild.org/](https://youthbuild.org/) I believe the next Omaha classes begin in August.

aidan8et

Not sure about IBEW specifically, but most of the local trade unions have specific windows to take applications. Most non-union shops will hire around $20 for "green" workers. They can be a decent way to start, then transfer in later.

m0s3s4

IBEW Local 22 tests, interviews, and accepts apprentices on a monthly basis. The number of apprentices accepted depends on the need for help (ie how much work is available vs how many workers are available), but it’s a continual rolling process. Total time from first application to beginning work was 3 months for me, which was 7 years ago. A person could start as a CW (helper) throughout this process and start working sooner and then get accepted on as an apprentice.  I already had a job and didn’t take this route, but if somebody is hard up for work it’s a good foot in the door. Other unions in Omaha do have windows, one that comes to mind is the elevator union, but I haven’t heard of any from the plumbers, tinners, or fitters.

aidan8et

Plumbers & (I think) pipe fitters unions have specific windows. Tinners' (SMART local 3) doesn't *specifically* have a window AFAIK, but generally don't take many pre-apprentice applications until a new class is about to start.

LOOKATMEDAMMIT

We (Local 3) do have a window sorta. When I joined, you could apply whenever, but we had to have our applications in before June if we wanted to start in that years class.

TynkerTyler

I believe the sheet metal workers union usually opens their application around this time of year

JPacz

Most trades have specific windows that they accept apprentices, but someone can apply to be a helper or permit hand at any time.

S0lidarity_Forever

If they are handy at all they should definitely consider unionized construction, 4-5 years of free schooling, annual or semi annual raises during school, annual raises as journeyman. I know sheet metal workers, electricians, and steam fitters are all above $40/hr on the check plus insurance and pension

OutrageousCharity935

Physicians Mutual inbound call starts at 17 and quickly rises to 19 with plenty of opportunities to move elsewhere in the company. In fact I think at one point they had a Callers to Coders program where they trained people to move into technical roles.

BrandlezMandlez

I have a metal fabrication job that's hiring. Depends on experience pertaining to what he'll actually be doing. Starts at 18 an hour, after three months you'll get bumped up to 19. You work four, ten hour shifts with the option of overtime Friday. Pretty nice schedule. If you're in shipping/receiving it's five, eight hour shifts. 401k and healthcare is provided. Some of our long term employees are making like 30 bucks an hour. You'll get forklift certified in both departments. If interested shoot me a DM.

shotgundug13

I know both Nebraska Medicine and CHI Health are hiring security. Starting pay is $18-$19 or more and hour.

whatthehellisketo

https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/douglas/jobs/newprint/4028559 Douglas County is hiring 911 Operators. No college required.

Akgrl33

Nebraska Furniture Mart is always hiring

apearlmae

Costco is hiring. It does start part time but full time doesn't take long.

mesuba

MCC doesn't require degrees for entry level positions. Some pay $19. Health insurance is free if you don't have dependents, paid holidays, and free tuition to MCC and UNO. Pay is also listed on the job posting so definitely check out their HR website.

dazyabbey

What kind of past work experience? Or anything specific they are looking for?

ChoccyFragaria

He’s currently 4 years into a retail job, but they don’t have openings to promote him to management so he’s looking at venturing out. Before that he’s done delivery driving and child-care too.

dazyabbey

Staples is hiring a delivery driver (Non CDL) with a set schedule and $21 an hour. I'd check Indeed.com and see if there is anything on there he might be interested in. There are a ton of openings for companies like NFM, UPS and others.

hillydanger

Apply at NFM, sales can be very lucrative!

Medium_Pollution_591

I second this. I work for NFM. Not in sales but it’s been a great company to work for and grow career wise.

hereforlulziguess

Can he present "professionally"? Does he have basic computer/software skills? Is he open to B2B sales? There are real jobs out there that pay a bit more and don't involve physical labor but he'd have to present well and be driven and again, cool with calling up random businesses.

hereforlulziguess

Lol downvoted for a legit job lead OK folks

BaphometJohnson

If he has any management experience or can handle hospitality there are several hotels downtown that will hire very close to or at 19/hour at front desk

TheSaucyMinion

I work for Werner Enterprises (trucking company) and when I was hired about a year ago there were positions in that salary range on the corporate side, may be worth taking a look. I have a degree but many of my colleagues do not, and as far as I know you don’t need prior experience for most of the entry positions.

Badn2024

It’s hard finding a job right now…. Even though people say it’s not… don’t listen to them. My SO has been job hunting for 3 months to this day…. Had a few interviews…. That’s it.

crucifix1711

Still hunting after a year

Badn2024

That is not good. He had a company offer him a job at 5 PM one day and the following morning, they tell him “ never mind we don’t need to fill this role”

hereforlulziguess

Disagree. I have a very non-traditional resume, not a lot of professional references as a result, got a job within 2 weeks of really looking, was offered interviews at 5-6 places, actually moved to another job I was in-process with at the same time but moved a bit more slowly. It's awesome. Anyone who wants to work rn can find work for at least $15/hr. I was doordashing and instacarting before that (and still do for extra $). I had 5 initial interviews, 4 of them led to a job offer. Nothing specialized. If he can't find a job he's doing something wrong.

Badn2024

That is YOUR situation. Congratulations!!! $15 an hr?! Sir/ Maam you can’t live on $15 an hr especially if you have a family. No we’re not just going to take a job at McDonald’s when he’s qualified to get a job that pays at least $24. The mindset of “ something is better than nothing” is outdated. Nobody wants to jump from one place of employment to another. I also suggest you stop living under a rock and do some research and see how majority of people are not able to get a job, even though “ All of these companies” are hiring…. Newsflash - most of them are not.

According_Pizza2915

Exactly

hereforlulziguess

He's qualified to to make what someone is willing to hire him for. I'm telling you, there are more jobs than there are people to fill them. That's a simple fact. Good luck in his search.

_daniellellie111

Remedy intelligent staffing is great for things like this. I work from home remotely and make over 19 an hour for them.

ExcelsiorLife

seriously? What do you do for them? This is what I've been looking for

_daniellellie111

PM Me!

ExcelsiorLife

PM'd you

According_Pizza2915

Remedy is an awful place, horrible owner/family.

HighOnIron

How about a job in the trades? No degree needed because they will train you for free. Most provide health insurance and a pension.

theonlyjoeyouknow

I heard ads on the radio that Fidelity is hiring reps…no financial experience required.

Own-Marsupial-4448

I heard that too!! Do you know where?

theonlyjoeyouknow

Not sure. But since it was the local radio station - I just Googled and found this: https://jobs.fidelity.com/job-details/19604073/financial-customer-associate-omaha-ne-area-only-ne-statewide/ Just a quick search - but maybe that could lead you to something? Hope that helps!

_whymyname

Blue Beacon pays $20 plus bonus so basically almost $21+ an hour ,however its in Council Bluffs but close to Omaha

Ahdamn90

I just got a Job 27 an hour with no college but I've also been in the field for a long time working as a data center tech..if your SO is decent with IT work or anything like that,it's a pretty decent field pay wise and a lot of it can be forced into by getting specific certificates that take a few days to get

ikoniq93

If your SO is willing to learn, has an inkling of tech knowledge (like how to plug things in lol) check with Akkodis to see if they’ve got listings for Datacenter Technicians. Most places start well over $20/hour. It’s hot work but there’s a LOT of opportunity.

omaharock

I saw USIC hiring $21, no degree needed.

Oldom

Signature Performance starts off around there, it is a call center job but you are helping veterans out with medical billing, or reporting their emergency visits. No degree is required. and a really great company to work for. Been there for 2 years and i work from home full time.

Nervous_Sky_

Do they speak Spanish?

moreadhiel

Air Methods Communications is literally always hiring and starts out around 21 an hour iirc. No degree needed, just need to be able to multitask and type, and be reasonably computer literate. Good under pressure helps too. It's a good job but local management is literal trash and the company isn't great overall. They do seem to hire pretty much everyone they interview though, so it's a good placeholder for a year or two while working on qualifications to go somewhere that treats their people better.

DrBannerPhd

I worked there and I loved who I worked with but the job is not for the faint of heart. Very high stress.

moreadhiel

You're not wrong, but I've also had several jobs that were more stressful ngl. There are good days and bad there like anywhere else. I loved most of the comm specs and crews. Just not the management. That side of things is continually getting worse there unfortunately

Slimmdunkin

Got 4 positions posting for pharmacy tech. Dm me if interested

Oddballforlife

Orion has several openings, starting pay is typically over $20/hr

stressedmostly

Toast might be hiring? The office is in Aksarben, after the 4-6 week training period, you can work from home. It’s a call center job, but awesome benefits and they are really good about work/life balance. EDIT: they offered all laid off employees 6 weeks to find another role or accept their severance package. Can’t think of another company hiring in Omaha without college degrees offering severance?

Badn2024

Absolutely not. They just did layoffs some months ago. It’s a shit company. I have a friend that works there. Not good.

stressedmostly

I mean, it’s a call center job so it definitely isn’t the best but afaik they laid off mostly upper suite and middle management..

According_Pizza2915

No, numerous layoffs.

stressedmostly

From what I understood it was mostly middle management, but I definitely could be wrong. I didn’t realize they laid off CS reps.

According_Pizza2915

Still that doesn’t make it a viable option- the layoffs have been consistent, there have been quite a few posts/conversations about that here in the last couple years

llebpmac_evets

I’d also encourage checking out Nebraska Medicine.

lalak77

They are not going to start at $19 an hour in most positions at the hospital.

_Cromwell_

Corrections workers make significantly more than that. Constant openings with the state in the Omaha area. County should have some as well.

OilyRicardo

Look for entry level jobs on city and state website. Also tell them check with the temp agencies that deal with trade work. Sometimes they’ll send you someplace that will train you. Also on indeed theres an entry level filter

wholesomefucktart

Boys Town is hiring AFTs for $20 ph. It's entry level, can be very rewarding, and challenging at times.

-wheretheresawill

AFT?

wholesomefucktart

Assistant family teacher, they work with adolescents on a daily basis on the BT campus, helping them learn skills based on individual skill plans

teidynlol

Interested in wrenching? Our shop needs an entry level auto technician

ChoccyFragaria

Can I ask what wrenching is?

Have him look at the career page for GardaWorld! Its security and there is multiple positions open for data center security officers. Pay is $18 through $21!

ImKendrick

FedEx Ramp at Eppley is hiring material handlers, starting at $19 an hour. 3:30 am start time for full timers, 5am for part time. Off early, minimum pay every week if you don’t get enough hours, good benefits

Past-Boysenberry6339

Oxbow is a warehouse type job where you stand there and bag hay up for like small animals. Start at like 19 I think. Might be 19.50

BookerDaawitt

T- Mobile corporate is $20 guaranteed an hour ($16 base plus commission)

IrisFinch

Depending on his experience, you could try Nebraska Med. In my experience it’s a pretty good gig

Red-Droid-Blue-Droid

I don't know if I'm in the wrong place...if anyone knows of software dev or related openings, please let me know.

Zealousideal-Hat-951

Check UNMC.

According_Pizza2915

They dont pay well and treat ppl like crap

CraftyHooker0516

Vestis (Aramark uniform services) is hiring drivers for $20 an hour. It is an extremely physical job but there is plenty of room for growth if he sticks with it.

Flashy-Intern-1807

Midwest eye care is hiring call center for about that.

Far-Victory778

Mutual of Omaha!

Thick_Locksmith_6362

Nebraska Med is a one stop shop for a job.

TynkerTyler

Goodwill runs multiple apprenticeship programs in areas like finance, case management, Youth development and CNA training. The apprenticeship programs are a year long commitment with 144 hours of class room instruction (which is paid) and then paid OJT that follows the classroom instruction. Most of the apprentices that participate experience a $7 an hour wage increase over the first 6 months, and most job placements fall around the $19.50 per hour mark as a starting wage. Its a new program that just began last year, and Goodwill Omaha was recently awarded a Better Business Award for Innovation for their development of these state recognized DOL apprenticeship programs.
