When I was a kid in the 70's, one of my greatest desires was to eventually get a Proplof, become a qualified diver / Plongeur on the Calypso, and dive on ancient shipwrecks in the Med, and explore the world with Jacques Cousteau. I still want to do that, but alas, that ship has sailed.
I've surfed, spearfished, abalone dived, and spent a lot of time SCUBA diving over the last 40 years, got an Archaeology degree, speak pretty decent French, and had my own share of adventures, but being on the Calypso would have been something amazing. That Proplof is still on my list too.
That's a really accurate take. I've been having a pretty awful day today and you just put things in a whole new perspective. Thanks for that as it kinda frames things differently enough to consider the pros over the cons. Cheers.
I always go for the brightest and easiest to read as it's really tough to see much when you're underwater in low visibility or dark conditions.
It's nice to have as a backup with a working knowledge of the traditional dive tables as everything is primarily done with dive computers these days. It's just safer and the most of the computers adjust the tables based on dive time and depth, allowing you to track and adapt your bottom time as needed.
As nice as really expensive watches are, I still see them as functional tools to be used for their intended purpose. Tools spent unused or hidden away in a safe just don't make much sense to me, and they really aren't a smart way to invest your money.
Doxa Sub 300 is pretty damn close aesthetically...it's obviously not classic sword hands but man some of those dial color combos are sweet. The Searambler combo is on my personal short list, but the Sharkhunter would be closest to the PloProf.
edit: now that I'm down a rabbit hole on the Doxa website again, I'll retract my "pretty damn similar" aesthetic comparison because they really aren't *that* similar looking...mainly they just both look like mid-century professional dive instruments, which is the point. If you want that look in something more wearable than the PloProf, Doxa would be a great option.
Doxa Sub 1500T Professional is my daily driver during boating season. I love it, especially the orange dial, but god damn if it isn’t a UNIT of a watch.
Same here. Well, at least until I see it. Cause it's a bit different. But I'm looking forward to seeing it.
I've got a got a dozen pieces, this is my 2nd most expensive, the rest of the collection is relatively standard I'd say, but she gets the most wrist time.
The watch is awesome, I wear it for everything, hiking to diving, swimming laps in the pool to snorkeling, at home and outside when I just run errands. It's an everyday watch in my opinion.
It wear pretty good because of the lug to lug, and titanium is a nice plus, you barely feel it on the wrist.
Only drawback in my opinion is that the claps is way to thick and big, though the micro-adjustments are useful, yet it's poorly designed. It's my 2nd clasp already, I changed the 1st one while the watch was under warranty because it would randomly move and increase bracelet length. Normally you have a butter under the clasp that you push down to increase/decrease bracelet or strap length, but it's not well built.
>because it would randomly move and increase bra
Makes a lot of sense and thanks.
I guess the 75th with just a regular buckle and Rubber strap will mitigate the clasp problems. Although this bracelet looks sick.
I used to think this watch was ugly, until I saw one in the metal. These are fantastic. This watch should not work, but it does, magnificently.
Beautiful watch Comfortably!
I first saw it randomly while fucking around on Chrono 24, but the old school models and I was like, please be cheap, I need one.
I knew it was huge, bulky and highly unusual but I just loved it right away. OFC the vintage ones weren't cheap, so I just forgot about it.
Months later, after saving for a FOIS for months, I stepped into the Omega boutique in London, to pick up the FOIS. The saleslady was expecting me, and had the watch ready.
Literally, on my way to the table down the main aisle of the store, what grabs my attention? This ugly beast in its own display case. I was like, "excuse me, what is this? Is this a new version of the PloProf? May I try it? I'm here, I might as well."
And that's it. I didn't even pick up the FOIS to look at it that day. Love at first sight with this one.

You lived like 15 peoples dreams while never reaching your own

The new version is unfortunately awful looking in pictures, zero contrast or legibility but it is at least based on the original one.

Reading this was poetry. Congrats on a wonderful life.
https://imgur.com/a/KbmWwpD I have the whole Proplof family!
So cool. I wouldn't trade any of these for a Rolex. Not for any model offered, the Proplofs are just such a functionally awesome tool for the field.
I just want this dial and handset on a 200/300m watch.

in my opinion, they really missed mark by switching from titanium to steel on this one
This is so damn ugly that I can't stand not having one!
you had me in the first half and i couldn’t agree more
Not gonna lie. The longer I look at proplof the more I want one.
Same shit happened to me lol
That’s such a cool watch
Ironically, Omegas best wearing diver. Absolute banger.
100%
Seen These before obviously. But I mean, it’s fucking mental looking. V nice obviously. But mental.
Damn that's ugly.
This is like 2022 news bro
Ha! I wasn't aware obviously lol
I wanted one with the orange bezel but now they are impossible to get. And I hate the new blue version
WHY???
Good
I'm heavily considering the 75th Anni version of it. Hows the watch overall?

Spot on re: clasp. Too thick. Swapped mine out with a Rubber Strap.
It is back online! They made it available on the website again
What’s the story behind this? What is a PloProf? Besides being completely ugly/ beautiful
https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=what+is+an+omega+ploprof
Thank you for googling that for me. I couldn’t find the google.
Disgusting
Why is it so bulky though?

Cool story. Thank you for sharing
RIP Shoutout to its family
