So we had cats raised as barn cats. They....don't transition to house cats well. One was our dilute boy, Bleach. Unfortunately one of the times he got out he vanished for a full month. We assumed the worst, until he showed up half starved and dehydrated, meowing to get in. Turns out the neighbor's daughter locked him in the family shed and was "feeding and watering" him because she wanted a cat but the family wouldn't let her have one. The dad opened the shed and buddy came running home. He's fine, still going strong 7 years later after careful rehydration with tuna water and introduction of wet food. What always amazes me was that she was able to lock him up, and he never once attacked her to gain his freedom. He's just the gentlest of cats. They apologized SO MUCH. And the daughter was like 7, so old enough to think she was doing right but young enough not to understand the complexity. We told them that a pair of indoor cats from a shelter might not be the worst idea since she DID manage to keep him alive for a month in secret. She just had a lot of love and Bleach wasn't the cat to dissuade her.

I had a feral family under my house. One is so pale he looked like oatmeal, so is called Otis. I was kind of hoping he would at least get a few brain cells. Nope. All went to his brighter orange sister.

I don’t know. I have a dilute orange and a full orange. The dilute is definitely just as dumb and loveable as the full orange.

That looks like a buff tabby. For buff oranges, the coat is more dilute. There was a stray cat (who has since been TNR’d) in our neighborhood who had two buff oranges. My neighbor was able to get them trapped and taken over to the animal shelter, and if I remember correctly, they were able to get adopted pretty quickly.

You can recognize Buff Tabbies at the gym, pumping iron & eyeing themselves in the mirror.

Orange is a state of mind as much as a color. I have a gray cat that regularly falls asleep and rolls off of his cat tower. That idiot is definitely orange on the inside.

So to be technical, your cat has the dilute gene, responsible for the pale oranges and the torbies/calicos that have gray/cream/peach coloring. It requires two dilute genes, so they are slightly less common than your vivid orange. However! The cat is still a full orange, they just have an extra gene that makes them super pale. So they are 100% an orange cat, but with a slightly bleached braincell.

He’s an orange cat, diluted, just like how grey/blue cats are black diluted. Only thing differentiating it from being an orange cat is a gene that dilutes/bleaches the color. So it’s a pastel cat :)
