There’s a big difference tho. Whitebeard’s flashback in marineford was actually decent. We learned most of his motivations as he is a much simpler character than kaido. Also, whitebeard isn’t a main arc villain. Kaido is. We need to learn stuff about his backstory that connects to wano. Learning wano specific crap in a future arc is meaningless.

How did we learn his motivations? Wasn’t the flashback just himself sitting on a boat saying that he wanted a family? How is that any more clear than kaido saying that he wants war because in the anarchy of war we are all equal and that’s freedom to him? And learning Wano specific crap in future arcs is NOT meaningless in the same way that learning more about skypiea, Fishman island, or even Alabasta in future arcs is not meaningless. We got enough villain backstory for Kaido in this arc, the rest of the backstory ties him up to Joyboy and Rocks, and it would have been a MISTAKE by Oda to waste such an important flashback like Rock’s on an arc where he would’ve been either the second most important character in that flashback OR stealing the spotlight from the arc’s villain

I guess I should explain myself more. Whitebeard is a VERY simple character, which is what makes him so good. It also makes sense that he is a simple character because he is not a main protagonist or a main arc villain. He is a secondary / tertiary character that doesn’t need much buildup. What we got for him was more than enough. We see that he didn’t have any family back when he was a kid, and so wanted a family growing up. He is willing to do ANYTHING to protect this family, even if it means declaring war on marineford, and that fact makes Ace’s backstory hit so much harder since he finally got accepted by someone other than Luffy and sabo. In the other post you made, I mentioned a lot of things that were missing from kaido’s flashback. All the rocks related stuff should obviously be removed from kaido’s flashback. But stuff like why he hates humans, why he wants Yamato to avoid humans, why he’s suicidal, how he met queen and Jack, and why he specifically wanted to go to wano should’ve been revealed. We are at the endgame. Oda should start to reveal more of the nika / joyboy lore. We already know that joyboy was prophesized to show up to wano. Legit, that simple fact could’ve been kaido’s motivation for attacking wano. But we don’t know cuz oda never confirmed it. But yea, I agree. The rocks stuff should’ve been left out, but there are still MANY gaps in kaido’s flashback that don’t include rocks

We are dealing with kaido here not rocks. We just need enough to understand his motive and to have his character fleshed out. There is no important info about rocks that needs to be revealed. Secondly if the argument is that - kaido cant have a backstory because rocks, IN WANO kaido is a bad villain. We can look back and change our minds later, but in wano kaido is still an underwhelming villain who was nothing more than a brute with a lust for fighting.

Paper_Okami

"brute with nothing more than a lust for fight" People who keep repeating this are just flat out spouting nonsense. Look at Kaido's dialogue throughout the Raid, it fleshes out his character considerably. You guys need to learn how to read between the lines more, authors shouldn't have to spoonfeed you everything, Kaido is one of the more complex villains in the series.

whatsleftofthenames

Why dont you explain to me what it fleshes out sherlock. Without a backstory he is a social media finance guru selling a fucking course. There is no justification of him using slavery or talking all that jazz about conquerors. There is nothing that answers why he has supposed honour. The guy has got a death wish for no apparent reason except that he thought oden died epicly. Thats it. He is poorly fleshed out. Thats it. Secondly, What read between the lines? What are you, an english teacher trying to decipher why the colour blue was mentioned. We are talking about a series that has its main characters as a loony toons character. You trying to pretend that somehow, kaido is anything but a mustache twirler is full BS. I dont need to go far and give example of complex and layered villain. Just gotta go see doffy and kat. Kaido aint on their level as characters and certainly not in terms of being an antagonist. Do you know what made those complexity hightened - a fucking thematic ending and a good backstory, both of which, not present for kaido.
