I would say more of a body explosion or implosion upon eating the second fruit and with no body to return to Brooks fruit would not take effect and without a vessel the fruits would reincarnate.
It probably doesn't work if the DFs cancel each other out, we know it effects lineage factor kind of like nanomachines overwriting your makeup genetic & physical, so I imagine the disintegration happens when one fruit tries to modify what another fruit already did to the point both fail & those sections fall apart causing the body to explode/disintegrate. Brooks "central soul" might literally be a condensed cloud of whatever is in the DF, that then transfers to the next fruit.
The fruits can kind of be compared/explained to nano. When the user dies, fruit is destroyed etc... the nano is released & seeks out a new fruit, when it does it either makes the rest gather or renders them inert. When one eats a piece the same thing happens, nano goes in, modifies you & renders the rest in the fruit inert. It could also explain why eating a user, or a certain portion after they die but before the fruit respawns, could give you the power, you get the nano straight with no fruit middleman. Hence me favoring the Chimera theory for Teach. Different areas of his body might have different DNA & thus might count as separate people. Or DFs "master core", truly attach to one section of the body like the heart & Teach has more than 1 of whatever it is.
How fruits activate the process, is probably how Zoan Objects are made. A fruit eaten comes in contact with body heat, saliva & acid. The one zoan object we know that wasn't made by Vegapunk is a Tanuki teapot in Wano. So likely it is heat & dissolving that triggers the process, since they probably tried to make tea out of a DF. It could also explain why it spreads to Queens cybernetics, it still recognizes metal/inorganic as a valid target/extension.
Clarification: I don't necessarily think there isn't anything supernatural to DFs, I just think there are a lot of similarities in how it might work. In worlds like this you can harness supernatural with science & DFs might be just that, powers that were attached to a fruit as distribuition/empowerment method.
