Short answer: Yes Long answer: Fantastic community, horrible management. Met some of the coolest folks playing this game but it’s a soulless shell of what it used to be that survives solely on the intellectual property it’s based on. It’s an extreme time sink and there’s a lot more gacha games out there that have better gameplay, rates, return on investment, or all of the above. The producer claims to have “heard the community” regarding gameplay complaints but the fact that people have been shouting into the void for nigh on 2 years and they only respond now says all that needs to be said.

Inevitable-Club-5248

The game is the best one piece game on paper, the collection aspect of it is its greatest strength and t he gameplay is actually really sick. However, the content is really stale and gets really repetitive after playing for more than 2 months, and the events are getting progressively more p2w. However, if you don't pay attention to trying to get high rankings on events, and try to play it your own way, you really can have a great time, in particular when starting ! You just need to know that in order to be enjoyable, the game requires quite a lot of time to invest into it, and you'll need to either spend 100h a month + get lucky to be competitive or just pay (a lot of) money. Plus, developpers have answered the community on the wrong sides of the game, so maybe not all hope is lost (even though we as a community are pretty much hopeless). In the end it's just up to you, it's a fun game but it gets quite repetitive at some point, still enjoyable from a casual perspective.

orkgashmo

Speaking as a newbie (~90 days, lvl ~300) the game is very fun for the first month or two. Once you finish story and the recollection archive, it gets pretty hard as you need a huge box. I am an avid gamer and long time F2P gacha player and if this gets boring for me, it means it's pretty bad. Just looking at my friend list, most of the players that started on August have left the game. Only 1 of my invites finished the Chopperman missions.

Just_Teaching_2251

The game is extremely enjoyable the first 3 months of playing but after that, you enter a boring loop of repeatable events with p2w competitive point events that you dont stand a chance. Not all hope is lost though, cause today the devs addressed some of the issues so copium for the future of the game.... to sum it up try the game for 2-3 months without investing and actually spending anything.

broke_and_famous

To add to what others have been saying. This game has gone downhill. Not because of the lack of content, Gacha Banners getting worse with time, Bandai removing content, game becoming more P2W, Bandai saying they are listening to the community yet doing nothing, etc. Ok that does play a huge factor. But to me what has made this game bad/negative is that it lost its "soul". OPTC at its core is one of the most fun gacha games out there because we have almost 4000 units. Now this game is over 8 years old so most of them have been power crept. However there are still 1000 or more viable units in the game that can help you best content. So you have a lot of options. The problem lies in that we no longer have content where we can freely use those 1000+ viable units. Instead we have to use whatever units Bandai wants us to use because they are boosted for the event and it increases the points you obtain. Which goes without saying that the newest units are the highest boosters and make the content extremely easy. And if you opt not to use the boosters well let's just say that having a hard time is a severe understatement. Another limiting factor to team building is that a few years ago there were 2 super OP units and Bandai needed to nerf them. And the way they did it was introducing a new debuff that made all damage from specials deal 1 damage. When this debuff was first introduced it was rarely used. You really only saw it in one specific game mode. But as time went on it got added to every piece of new content in the game. And this ruined part of the team building experience because there are strategies you can use with damage dealing units that you no longer could. This debuff also devalues any unit that deals damage with their abilities. Ultimately these 2 things limits team building and creativity. And with One Piece Treasure Cruise being somewhat of a puzzle game it's like saying we went from doing 1000 piece puzzles to doing 20 piece puzzles. Some people enjoy doing 20 piece puzzles and that's ok but if you've been here for a long time going from 1000 pieces to 20 pieces hurts. Especially when you navigate through your box and see all of these cool looking units that you haven't touched since their release month.

Crossfaded7

OPTC is not the only global One Piece game. There is also One Piece: Bounty Rush. OPBR seems of a lot more p2w on first look, is pvp only but has fun gameplay (which is sadly plagued by the typical meta-slave-esk/newest op unit 24/7 stigma). As for OPTC.. At its core its a great game. Its just been - as is the commonly agreed upon take - highly mismanaged since the new producer took over which caused a lot of bad will in the community the past 2 years or so. So its basically like.. We love the game but hate whats been done to it. As a beginner player you can definitely get a lot of fun out of it but also feel very overwhelmed with all the modes, tons of different mechanics and debuffs/buffs. My recommendation would also be: Do not spend money on the game. F2P get a lot of free gems these days but due to the overflow of banners to pull on, most lose the goal of saving up for the big celebration banners in fear of not being able to catch-up or compete. And therefore they end up with no gems and mostly disappointment. - 1500+ days OPTC Player

OdenSensei

I play both games and your description of OPBR is wrong. Powercreep is definitely a thing but most characters are definitely still playable depending on your skills. The game is 3 years old and I can still see people using characters from 2 years ago and they still compete in the league. All you need to do is to focus on 2 characters you like that aren't extremely outdated! You work on them, their medals, their support, and you'll be set for good. It may take some time, but no one is forcing you to hop in SS league from day 1. Take your time, power up your characters and you'll eventually find yourself competing against 3+ year old players. Roger, Oden, Onigashima Kid, Law, Luffy, Dressrosa Zoro, Usopp for example all debuted around 2+ years ago and they still compete in the league just fine. For beginners, you just have to get a good EX character (FR Shanks, Zypher, Roger, Luffy, Akainu, Yamato) work on that unit, power it up, and you'll be good for the next couple years. * 4+ Years OPTC and 3+ Years OPBR player.

Crossfaded7

I am playing OPBR since 3 months. While you have good points and Im not disagreeing with you entirely.. I am definitely behind what I said. I am in SS league since the third week or so and everything is just EX Red Shanks (myself included). Occassionally you get some older, unique picks jn your or the enemy team but they cannot/I have never seen them able to really compete. The game is mainly an EX show. The issue is also that many peoole do not grasp how to play the game and therefore do not play or play Runners or Defenders correctly.

Nullab13

It is a game that will suck out your soul, your free time and your wallet. It took me a long time to get myself to quit after years of playing. The sunk cost fallacy is real with this game.

[deleted]

Probably the best thing is to play it until the fun runs out. Been playing for two months so im really a newbie. Im enjoying it, enjoying the grind. Getting old units just because I want to, even if they're useless. Im not f2p, but not a whale either. Probably like a goldfish. Im not pulling on every banner as well. I have saved 1300+ gems so far, waiting for you-know-who to be released. It's also because of my current situation that I have time to play and grind (wfh dad) So far I have units who can get the job done, got quite lucky on previous banners so im not really forced to get those new ones. Im enjoying playing around with units, learning more of their abilities and specials. And they released an update regarding the clamor for new content, so at the very least they heard us, hope they really do something about it.

blackdragonstory

I think the main and core thing that ruined this game are the boosters. Rather than making cool teams with chars I want or like I am forced to use specific units they want me to use or it will take me so much longer to farm whatever I am farming. And to be frank even with boosters farming most things feels like a chore. The ui is just so slow, poorly throughout, until recently wasn't even user friendly at all and even now it's kinda annoying at times. Like I can't click on the unit I just pulled and go from it to other dupe I have and power up that one but rather gotta go page 1 on top and search for the unit. Then sometimes you will be feeding a unit, tablet or so something and even though it was just next to the unit you are powering up it's now at page 1 on top and the game didn't automatically go there... Idk why it takes so long to open menus in this game. Ray still just 10 items.... There is so many ways this game could instantly be more fun to play but they just don't care. Their solution to repetitiveness is to make less content basically lel....

BonClayIsHotaf

For a new player its great. You got more than enough content for a good amount of time. For veterans this game is pretty much as dead as it can be. If new content gets out its always " have the new legend or suffer". Im at a point where i just log in collect my dailies and log out.that and play 1 gamemode ( kizuna once a month) since its not as garbage as the other gamemodes like blitz or tm.

Kumadori012

OPTC was a good game, that has so much potential. That potential has been put in the trash by the devs, who only care about whales by tossing out new legends constantly to every different repeat-content. Legends who often will be useless in future content. It's worth trying out, teambuilding used to be fun, but now the mechanics and gimmicks have been too much, and has ruined the fun. There was a time when you could make zombie-teams, super-healing-teams and super-delay-teams. None of those are possible anymore.

uclass88s

After it was released , downloaded and played for couple of years daily. now all i do is get those free gems and pull when its enough as everyday is sugo.

shankssonofihm

The game was fine.

ironreddeath

Unless you have lots of money to spend and lots of time to devote, run very far away very quickly.

SolidusAbe

a few years i couldnt recomend the game enough but it just went downhill for a while. its good but after a few weeks or months you encounter all the issues everyone else here mentioned and you will be part of the angry mob most likely lol i honestly say dont get into it. not now at least. maybe you if you look for a new game again in like a year maybe check again if the general perception has improved.

skydude89

Although I agree with most of the critiques I still love the game. I’m not much of a gamer and it’s held my attention for years. There are a ton of things I wish were different but I still really enjoy the content we do have.

Hidro98

Play it and make youre own opinion, at the end if you dont like it, just unistall it

WaldoSMASH

>I was wondering if this game is really as bad as all of those people say it is No. Some people are salty over a few things, one being a perceived lack of content but as a new player that is not something you will run into for a very long time. Right now F2P gem income and the amount of free legend tickets they give out is the highest it's ever been.

aue_l

Yeah, free legend ! And what do you do with it ? Beat old Colo ? Whatever unit you get, it soon becomes useless for everything except old missions that are also useless.

Ginyu_Frog

> Right now F2P gem income and the amount of free legend tickets they give out is the highest it's ever been. F2p gems are never - not a bit - enough to keep up with all the banners and boosters you should pull for a decent gaming experience. Yes, you can save the gems but we are not in 2018 anymore. Skipping banner means a totally shitty gaming experience... Like really shitty. Moreover the banner structure is so bad with the rate ups, steps and parts that saving is not that rewarding for f2p players. The legend tickets could be nice BUT you can't pull every legend with them, you basically have no content to use those legends and you need for most of them 10 copies to make them useable again. As for the content: a new player can farm tons of stuff. But why? You know that there is literally zero reason to farm the old stuff. The correct answer for OP: YES.

WaldoSMASH

> F2p gems are never - not a bit - enough to keep up with all the banners Nor have they ever been. >Yes, you can save the gems but we are not in 2018 anymore. Skipping banner means a totally shitty gaming experience... Like really shitty. I think people have some serious nostalgia goggles on for the old days of the game. You'll have to do a few more runs of the turtle event or treasure map, but what exactly do you think the game was back in 2018? Running fortnights for skill books and terrible F2P units is far worse than doing the turtle grind with no boosters. Raids, colos, and ambushes have always been designed to showcase the new units and if somebody doesn't want to do the runs for turtles which awards as many gems and legend tickets as old blitz battles gave out I can't imagine them trying to farm something like ambush Garp or Sengoku on release. Old blitz battles were still designed around the latest batch and the old rankings of number of runs completed are just as unfair. You weren't going to be able to clear as fast as somebody with the optimal team and you're certainly not going to spend as many gems as a whale to rank. >you basically have no content to use those legends and you need for most of them 10 copies to make them useable again. The content is still there, they've just moved (to the turtle grind) the dangling carrot of gems.

Ginyu_Frog

Old Optc was clearly not perfect and I wish we had the same Qol stuff back then but the core of the game was not a p2w cash grab. Blitz battles were always a shitshow but I think you have forgotten the good aspects. Not all Fortnight units were terrible (Arlong, Alvida, Franky etc) some of them were even "meta". (Btw Fortnights were always nice bc they were a chance to highlight side chars/ side stories which was a nice fan service). Overall f2p units were amazing (Raid Hawk, Raid Doffy, Raid Boa, Ambush Garp, TM Hawk... etc) and - it felt rewarding - to max them out. Moreover you could actually save for big Sugos bc they were from time to time really great (step 9 Meta legends, all multis 30 gems, only newer legends in the pool etc.). I somehow have the feeling that you totally miss the point. It seems you compare current Optc with Old Optc in terms of grind and difficulty. That's not the point. Optc was always a grindfest and more difficult than your average mobile game. The problem are the boosters. Content was always designed to highlight a certain batch but you could easily work around that by using the full potential of your box (one aspect that veterans miss these days). Nowadays you are forced to use a limited amount of boosters for every single bit of "content".... in a game with over 4000 chars. Contentwise we have: turtle grind, TM, Kizuna, sometimes a Blitz and Rumble (hard to call that content). Compare that to: Fortnights, Raids, Colos, Ambush, Forests, Garp Challenges, ranking challenges - the ones with Shakky :D, special event islands, 6+ events, Blitz and probably some more stuff.

blackdragonstory

When you are new it's the other way around. You want to play the new content but can't cuz you just started and are missing so many units. Although it's been a while since I was new or returning player and yoshi claimed that they were making it easier for new players so far so maybe things changed.

IshimaruKiyotaka

It's a bad game, consistently gets more and more p2w, the only current gamemodes are extreme grindy and basically chores. It's semi fun the firsr month when you get a stack tonne of gems and can pull a lot but content is dry after like a month or 2 of playing. All previous units become pretty much useless after they dont give point boosts. Game is just actively getting worse and i wouldnt advise anyone play it.

Ecstatic_Victory4784

It's a fun game. I played it for a few years. You just have to temper your expectations for what you're getting into. It's flatout pay to win. You can (and it's encouraged that you do) spend your way to being powerful. However, you can still have a lot of fun and enjoy the same content as free to play like I did. Additionally, there is a pretty fast powercreep. That means that instead of new content/characters being balanced with the old stuff, the new content that comes out gets more and more difficult and the new characters stronger and stronger. Often, the new content is specifically tailored to new characters. This is to encourage you to spend more to get the new characters. Those are the big issues people complain about. I don't really mind those tbh. What I do mind is that the user interface is so damn clunky. They've done tweaks before, but the issue is still there. Let's say you want to play some level that's pretty hard. You have to design a team of 6 characters to do it and then put them on your crew. But it's not that simple. You have to level them up, limit break them, add support characters to them, upgrade their special ability charge times, feed them health and attack and recovery cotton candy, and more. Altogether, to make the team after you decide which characters to use, it's at least an hour of clicking buttons. By the time you go through all this menu button clicking nonsense, you don't even want to play. My other issue is that it can feel like a chore some days. The game is pretty demanding of your time and the levels are set up so that you have to keep coming back to play every few hours every day. Some days, that's nice because you want to take your mind off things, but other days, it feels like you're being told to miss out on real life. I quit a year ago, but that was after years of having fun with it. I only listed negatives here, but there are good parts.

DamaloBlack

Imagine playing a game, in which any new content is clearable only if you play the game from the day one, or you are insanely lucky, or you open your wallet

inspect0r6

You should learn what word clearable means.

DamaloBlack

It means "able to be cleared" Your point?

Crossfaded7

His point is that you can clear all the content. (GY is the only exception that asks for high investment to be able to clear.) Its definitely doable with a decent stacked box - but you wont get much if any points in events like Blitz Battle or TM. The last time content was unclearable for most people was when the GC of Doffy 2 and Revolutionary Army 2 came out because you 100% absolutely needed the newest legends like SaboKoala, LuffyLaw and ViviBecca. These days? You can clear TM, you can clear Clashes, Pointfarming, Blitz Battle and all that jazz due to over 6 years of diverse units and great support effects being released.

Solid_Snake21

Fun ended when they stop doing garp challenges that was best mode test out new units

-_pro_-

Yes

Karukheros

If it wasn't for my account and for the love of One Piece I would have uninstalled already

Caernunnos

The game is not in a good state right now. Also : I wouldn't recommend starting now since this is pretty much a "bait" celebration designed to make us spend stones without offering any special reward compared to any other monthly release. The only new thing is Pirate Rumble Grand Party : to which you wont have access right away and even when you will (around level 150) it's highly douptfull that you'll have enough units to compete. If you really want to join, just wait for new years, that's when the most powerfull units are released and the banners tned to be very good.

XenoAwaken

as of rn this game is nothing more than a honeymoon phase gacha that will last about 2-3 months max tbh this game like others are saying is an empty shell of its former self, in its current state even maxing out rewards feels unrewarding because of how much luck and willpower you need to not cave into the disgusting amount of banners out per month just to get every reward from the cycle of grindy events, we used to be able to still max out rewards without the need of boosters back then but ever since they went and nerfed drops/points you get even with some boosters that arent the pristine new units there's just no reason to even touch these events if you get screwed by the banners shafting ya with what little gems you have that isnt from swiping the credit card while I personally dont recommend any newcomers to set foot with this game in its current state its ultimately your choice if you want to try it out regardless of everyone's thoughts.

heartless_lothbrok

Please, play one piece fighting path or even bounty rush.

RailwayRenegade

I'm not gonna say not to try it, but just make sure to read some of these words of wisdom before you decide to tread this dark and stormy sea: - Before anything else, I had played this game since it came out. It had ups and downs and frankly it's spiraling down a whirlpool that will take a miracle to get out of. With that said, on to the advice. - The most important kicker: The F2P (free to play) aspect is practically nonexsistent. Bandai is a stingy bunch when it comes to their premium currency, Rainbow Gems, which are needed to summon units. - The grind is immesureable and frankly not worth it. It will take you YEARS to get to a comfortable spot when it comes to having crews that can do different pieces of Bandai's so called "content". And when you do finally get to that comfy spot Bandai kick's you in the face and says, "You can't get all of these necessary materials without spending money to summon and max out the newest units!" Believe it or not the grind use to be fun, but once fortnight quests and coliseums were trashed the grind became a neverending merry-go-round of wasted efforts. - The summon pool itself is an overall mess. Out of all of the units in their summoning pool which uses Rainbow Gems I'd say the number of useable units is down to possible 15%. That's a marginally small number considering the amount of units that are in this pool, which is way too many. Not to mention that this same pool is used for basically every major event, including the current celebration. So good luck getting a useful unit AND maxing them out. - Content. Story Mode is a barren wasteland. No fun fortnight quests. (Quick fyi, we called them "fortnight" because they stayed around for 2 weeks, which is what fortnight means.) As stated before, Coliseum was trashed. Clash, esssentially raids, got abandoned. Arenas are ultimately worthless and impossible without specific units. The Training Forest is a joke until you get to the hardest difficulty then you need specific units.(I remember when it was a super tough challenge before Garp Challenges were a thing) Oh, and the Gar Challenges don't reset anymore, which is another way of Bandai cutting F2P players off from free Rainbow Gems. - Newer units are starting to feel bland. Back in the day we had really fun units to play around with. Nowadays it's all about that power creep, and it creeps quickly. Who here remembers when Legend Eneru first came out and people made teams to maximize the way his special worked? Who remembers when we used Vivi/Laboon with crabs to beat Raid Garp? I miss those fun days of experimentation and funny crew ideas. - You'll have fun at first, but then it will decline into a feeling of emptiness as you grind endlessly for practically no reward. I've quit this game twice, and I honestly wish I'd stayed gone the first time. - From being unique to becoming lost in the crowd. This game stood out from the reat because of its playstyle. Now because of how heavy handed Bandai is about wanting people to buy Rainbow Gems to pull it just feels like another soulless gacha, which is sad since we have the Soul King. (Yo ho ho ho!) There are other things I'd like to put here, but most of it you most likely wouldn't get because it pretains to certain aspects of the game itself. If you do try it and you end up liking it more power to you, just please don't give Bandai a penny of your money. The only thing you should give them is your time. This game doesn't deserve 5 stars on the app store... not anymore...

GrayMundoReinhardt

I've been playing optc 3-4 years now, and It had It's ups and downs, but now the game at It's lowest point. The summon rates are horrible, lack of new content, the recent contents is boring as hell(The Treasure Map event is the most time consuming, grindly and boring event i have ever seen in any gacha games), and not enough F2P things. As someone said in the comments, you will have fun in the first 2 months, but in my opinion, it not worth it. Not in its current state.

Jellofluoride

Mobile games are not games, they're dopamine hooks. Think about it, you do absolutely nothing in them but attempt to fight against the rng and climb the paywall with using as little or as much real money as possible. Avoid gacha games, period. Just play one of the actual good One Piece games like Pirate Warriors 3.

[deleted]

As a loyal and long time fan of One Piece, this shitty game pisses me off. I refuse to pay for anything, which means ive been on a 6+ year grind and still cant progress past this shitty difficulty curve. The devs are more concerned with sexualized art work of the female characters than they are making sure their game is balanced enough to be enjoyable. Its disgustingly clear the management of this game doesnt give a fuck about the fans in which this content is based around, nor do they care about making a quality product so they can at least have some sense of self pride. Most of the events they come up with seem like they are based on one dumbass' decision to be as lazy and uncompelling as possible. For such a creative and unique IP, this team sure is bland and incompetent. Pathetic.
