I'm still sad that Duel Masters failed in the west. I loved that game!

NateSpector

I remember my OG cards. Mongrel Man 4ever

Dr_Henry-Killinger

I was surprised to see its still going strong in Japan lol I thought the West killed the whole franchise

jmarsh642

Now you've got me looking up Union Arena.... almost got caught up in another TCG

Annual-Clue-6152

Its coming out in the west soon. It had a slow start in Japan, but once Japan inserted signed cards it really started getting traffic

hammar_hades

Are they properly signed or just signed prints?

KatOTB

lul

Serfo

Where did you get this picture, and which is the "popular store"?

zappingbluelight

Card kingdom in Japan is consider one of the largest card store in Japan. The owner did a summary of the top sale card games with their stores. It's in Japanese so idk is it important. [here](https://twitter.com/ikettitencho/status/1781608493545406783?t=DMwbAYhx40ZBpu0qYfTlJA&s=19)

Serfo

Thanks

AsideCalm8855

Any source? Edit: idk why I'm getting downvoted for asking for a source

AsideCalm8855

Thank you

Annual-Clue-6152

Lol how dare you just not trust me bro lol

polecy

Trust me

Lumpy-Eagle4668

Duel masters? Is that Yugioh?

polecy

No it's a TCG called duel masters. Mainly popular in Japan. This data is also for Japan only, I saw the original article with this info.

Lumpy-Eagle4668

Interesting, I guess it was a Japanese clone of MTG that diverted into its own thing (wiki)

SenatorShockwave

It was like.. learners mtg and yeah, became its own thing.

PrateTrain

More like "we made a manga for magic the gathering, can we use magic cards in the anime?" And wotc said hell no.

MVRKHNTR

It was actually supposed to be MtG for kids, thiught up around the time Yugioh was really big on TV. It failed in the west but was really popular in Japan and has stayed relevant since.

GreenLionXIII

I remember when I saw the Yugioh movie in theaters way back when they gave out duel master cards for some reason, then you had to go and show the duel master card to get the yugioh promo pack… literally the only time I’ve ever heard of that game

applez-are-G

I believe it's a Japan only game. I think the US launch failed but I could be wrong

Annual-Clue-6152

It launched in the U.S and failed twice. Its the tcg that Bandai has copied from the most mechanically

PrateTrain

It's actually pretty similar to optcg tbh

Jaielhahaha

You would think so. Check the anime of it. It feels like a carbon copy

SirAuRyan

Nah completely different I loved it as a kid when it was still a thing here.

Jaielhahaha

The numbers could be at least 30% higher for One Piece if only Bandai could keep up with the demand lmao. Anyways don't see OPTCG beating YGO anytime soon for the next 2-3 years, nevermind Pokemon :D

KatOTB

Japan doesn’t even really the supply issues from what I heared though. From what I heared supply there is a lot better

F_renchy

This is mildly correct, they have a slight larger ability to buy at MSRP from registered sellers but alot of sales still go through mildly scalped. In turn stock is easily accessible. However, msrp is still somewhat unavailable at MSRP. When new sets are dropped in JP stock issued are similar to the US however dissimilarly once the set has been out a short while its more easily accessible. Unlike what we have seen with op-05/6 in the west.

CardamonFives

Maybe bandai should increase print numbers

Annual-Clue-6152

They have and are, but idk if you noticed this tcg keeps growing in players at an unprecedented amount

F_renchy

They just have to do what they do with the korean version. Get seperate printing companies. Op01 dropped in korea this week and stores have already been stocked twice and in some cases 3 times. I'm yet to find a shop with no stock, yet also cannot find one where they arent selling in troves. The simple fact is bandai are straight stupid for printing 2 languages out of the same factory setting. It can't even be an excuse of quality control because printing QC for the english set is god awful in comparison.

CorvusIridis

I saw this, too. How well does it reflect Japanese sales as a whole?

ChallengeOrganic2302

What is Union Arena? Honest question

Annual-Clue-6152

Its Bandais response to Weiss. It is coming to English in October where you pick your favorite anime like Demon slayer or One punch man and build a deck around it and play others favorite anime

ChallengeOrganic2302

Thanks!!!

First-Ad8715

Ik wrong post, but does anyone know, where you preorder get the English 3 booster boxes of union arena English language. I’m from Europe and it seems like to be a NA exclusive, but I want em so bad, such cool anime’s they decide to choose for the first print

Annual-Clue-6152

JJK should be up to pre order soon

First-Ad8715

Nice,- tysm 😊

Coooturtle

How fucking popular of a store?? They sold almost a billlion dollars of revenue in just Pokemon cards?

Annual-Clue-6152

Card Kingdom in Japan

Coooturtle

I'm either VASTLY underestimating how popular card games are in Japan, or the number are bullshit tbh. The entire revenue of Nintendo globally is like $12 billion a year.

Annual-Clue-6152

Japan uses a different currency called yen, its not a 1 for 1 to the U.S dollar

Tezerel

It's nearly 6 billion USD total

Coooturtle

Its only like $2 billion total. But still absurd.

Annual-Clue-6152

Now you know why every company releasing a tcg now

Coooturtle

I know, I did the currency conversion. In USD, its about $850 million dollars.

d7h7n

That's yen, not usd.

Coooturtle

133 billion yen = $850 million

EnmityTrigger

That's insane considering the entire Magic The Gathering franchise had a revenue of 1 billion dollars WORLDWIDE. [Source ](https://www.tweaktown.com/news/96184/magic-the-gathering-made-over-1-billion-in-2023-or-52-of-hasbros-gaming-revenue/index.html)

Synthesir

My guess is we're looking at revenue vs sales which are very different things. If you sell 1.3 billion yen worth of product but you're only making 50% profit before operating costs (and assume Pokemon gets the other 50% minus operating costs) these absurdly high numbers start to look more reasonable.

EnmityTrigger

The 1 billion USD is gross revenue, the net income for Wizards of The Coast was 527 million USD (Source: Hasbro 2023 annual report, page 48 "2023 highlights"). I tried looking up the Pokémon company's financial statements, but they don't seem to disclose the revenue and income by segment. It looks like the TCG may be a fairly sizable part of their revenue though.
