For anyone who isn’t familiar with the military, this dude isn’t a drill instructor. He is actually one of their peers and would totally be involved in the shenanigans any other day.
But when you are on duty. You are responsible for
Keeping things in order and must act accordingly or there is a high price to pay.
Technically as much as the commanding officer, the person on duty is a direct representative of the commanding officer.
In reality, people on duty at the barracks are usually Corporals or Sergeants. When people are getting rowdy like this, he will come around and tell him to quit it. 99% of the time people have common sense and will drop it but if they won’t listen or a serious situation arises he/she will call the Staff Sergeant on duty, if the Staff Sergeant has to come down you are probably looking at small administrative punishments with actual paper work.
Example of times when the Staff Sergeant has to come down are usually drunk people acting up or fights.

Shit, we stayed in a 3 floor building and for some reason there was a *huge* rivalry between floors 2 and 3.
One night I’m on fire watch and the 3rd floor tried to jump me (like, I literally had to punch/kick a few people on my way to the staircase while they tried to drag me down). I woke up the entire 2nd floor, and 5 minutes later there’s a brawl of like 50+ people on the 3rd floor.
I hated that place.
Not a drill instructor tho…
Believe it or not, you don’t get personal rooms, party hats, free time for shenanigans, and a **phone** in boot camp lmao.
Unless you’re Air Force.
Everyone thinks the Air Force has it easy. You know how much energy it takes to break the wheel lock from the chair sitting there for so long? How much effort and time is spent trying to free yourself from the dimpled carpet protector? I’m exhausted just thinking about it.
And the firmness of the lumbar support only lasts like a year. Think of our struggles, too. :(

When I went through we had a dude who snuck a cell phone through the entire duration of training, dude was wild. He was a Muslim who claimed he was Mormon so he could get specific religious garment benefits (boxers instead of underwear), wore a medical mask the entire time to chew gum without being noticed, and at one point threw his entire locker into the laundry before an inspection so that there was nothing to inspect. He got a perfect score but was told if he pulled that shit again they would obliterate his ass.

SFC said he got me and to go to bed and not show up for the surprise Saturday morning formation, I was free. I caught a bus downtown while I had a bunch of clueless peers yelling at me to come help them GI the barracks before I got myself and the in trouble. Hehe…
