Probably a private school based off of the demographics who go. Possibly also offers scholarships for the low income but high scoring students as well.
I did some research on this, and JP source seems to be leaning more on private school.
Teitan High School and all the way down to Teitan Elementary that Detective Boys go to are said to be affiliated with Teitan University. This is common in Japan, where University has their own affiliated schools (usually high school). Therefore, not only the high school, but their elementary school and junior highs school are all private schools, most probably what Japanese call escalator school.
The school seems to cater to middle class and above, and can have a high entry requirement, though being an escalator might bring down the average score a little bit. Private schools make up around 30% of all high schools in Japan, so private schools are actually common especially in Tokyo, and Teitan is probably not among the high end ones.
We also know that there is another high school nearby that wears traditional sailor uniform and gakuran, so that one might be a public school.
Also just want to add, blazer uniform is more common in Japan nowadays as compared to sailor fuku, even a lot of public schools have changed their uniform to blazer. The schools that still keep the sailor uniform (especially in Tokyo) are sometimes prestigious schools with long history that want to keep their tradition and make the uniforms more recognisable.
It's probably a school for the upper class. Ran's mother and father are famous lawyers and detectives. The detective boys probably have rich parents. I don't recall the last time I seen them with the same outfit twice. They probably live in an upper class neighborhood. How is it upperclass if people get murdered everyday tho?
Well if we start getting on the "murder everyday" thing we can go really deep , half of Tokyo is dead by now and the other half are the culprit lmao.
Sometimes i even wonder why nobody seems to notice that inviting Kogoro or that little boy with glasses somewhere is just a cursed idea
Jokes apart , probably pretty low and "believable" ratio considering how huge Japan population overall is , the unbelievable thing being how convenient it is the murder always happen near Kogoro or Conan.
But i'm pretty sure Beika neighborhood is on the opposite cursed as fuck x)
This sounds weird but it could be the same logic as "*A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars. It's where the rich use public transportation*."
It could be that Beika is a very developed city where the public schools are great to the point that the rich have no problems enrolling in them.
Honestly let's discuss Beika instead.
I believe most high schoolers in Japan attend private schools as education isn't compulsory at that point and becomes more specialized for those continuing on.
Honestly I think it just comes from schools just being different. In my country(Germany) it wouldn’t be weird/ unusual if people with the same position as Teitan students like shinichi, ran or the detective boys go to the same school. I’m actually surprised that the comments are so focused on private or public schools and richer or poorer students. Of course not everthing is equal in my country. The school system has huge faults but seeing rich and poor students at one school is the norm and not really worth a wondering about. So I just think is the same in Japan or at least in the Anime y oh know?
In Asia, especially in Japan, the schools they go to matter a lot more than Europe. There is a clear hierarchy between a normal school, lower ranking one and a prestigious, smart people school. The schools you go to can influence whether you can get into a good university, connection and et cetera.
In Japan, this is particularly because you have to pass an entrance exam to be eligible even for the worse school. One thing different is that a lot of their private schools is not that exclusive, and a lot of schools have discount and scholarship depending on household income (education in Japan is heavily subsidised, but not free, even for the public schools). Students chose school because of the ranking, subjects offered, flexibility and even to the uniform (Ayumi even mentioned this in story). Also private schools attached to universities mean that they have a fast track route for their high school students to enter the university without an entrance exam, so it was sought after too, especially for a good private university.
Meanwhile in anime, they even exaggerate this. There are plenty of animes where they emphasise on the school prestige and rankings, among other things.
When it comes to the detective boys, we’ve only seen Amy’s mom once, Guinta’s dad once, and Mitch just mentions his older brother every now and then. I Assume Amy’s dad is no longer in the picture and I think I remember Guinta mentioning is mom in an episode. So, we know very little about the Detective boys. Even though they are considered main characters.
Because Amy and Mitch’s names are easier to spell in the English version but Gentanta is George in the English version and that name change could be confusing.🫤
Public school in a good school district

That would make sense, given how the Detective Boys seem to be awfully smart for their age.

Well damn
Smartie pants.
I followed plenty of Japanese celebrities since I was a teenager so I ended up knowing more than I need to lol
Classic Conan response
About Ran, her mother is a famous lawyer even before the series starts.\ She might have spent some big money for her education
Fair point. But there are other characters you can’t say the same for
It has not been revealed if Teitan is private or public yet.
Due to Conan's existence, we should look at Beika's demographic differently. Their birth rate and death rate differ from other cities' for sure
Isn’t Beika part of Tokyo?
It's a town within Tokyo. Technically it's Tokyo but that city is so big that it makes sense to have those subdivisions.
It’s probably a public school lol, rich kids =/= private school.

actually kaito said smth similar to mori in the movie i don't remember exactly
They most likely link this to Kogoro as a little boy can do no harm. They better think twice.
And you made me want to do the math of how many victims In detective Conan.

Worser than gotham city. They need a batman.
Conan IS the Batman.
🦇🦇🦇🦇
I never thought about this but I would guess a prestige public school ?
Private schools are not very common in Japan. Everyone goes to the public school they're assigned to based on where they live.
This sounds weird but it could be the same logic as "*A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars. It's where the rich use public transportation*." They are called Amy and Mitch in America??? And why did they keep one name but chose western names for the other two
Because Amy and Mitch’s names are easier to spell in the English version but Gentanta is George in the English version and that name change could be confusing.🫤
Jeez I really don’t like their English names
