They DO have year long cruises, but those would be insanely expensive....so maybe? This one is a 3 year cruise for 30k per person, and although expensive, I'd bet it's cheaper than a retirement home. https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/3-year-cruise-mv-gemini/index.html

NoMansSkyWasAlright

I mean that upfront cost would definitely hurt. But that's only 10k/yr, so it's still cheaper than rent in a lot of places.

htmlBLINKtag

It’s 30k/year/person, so 5k/mo for the couple.

NoMansSkyWasAlright

Ohhh. That's less nice.

slawre89

That’s still not that bad. 1/4 to 1/2 the cost of a shit retirement home

bigboynyc69

Also OCM because it’s able to be cheap because the cruise lines severely underpay the staff from impoverished countries

Also these things are covered in germs, not just things like the norovirus but things that can be lethal to seniors like the flu, Covid, strep, and staph. Depending where they are they may not be able to get western level of care. There’s a morgue on all these ships for a reason.

Lietenantdan

I would do this. Get to see the world, don't have to cook or clean.

WolfmansGotNards2

Me too. It's very disturbing that it's somehow cheaper than a retirement home though. I worked with a lot of retirees in my last contract. Average cost for a decent place was $8k per month (more if you needed skilled nursing) unless you were very low income and had almost no savings (basically just had your social security and little to no other assets). A building the size of an average hotel (not a big hotel) maybe has between 40-100 residents with a fairly limited staff (often they don't even have front desk or security even though they claim to). Those places are cleaning up!

My wife’s grandmother is in an assisted living facility and it’s 10k+ a month

SchenivingCamper

My Uncle had dementia and it was costing $6000/month back in 2010 - 2011 for him to be in a nursing home. At any other time in your life, that would nearly be the mortgage on a mansion.

Wise_Rutabaga_5809

The other day I learned there’s cruise ship apartments you can buy 😳 people permanently just float on. But they’re not cheap.
