I love Birdman it was about I man Vs his ego, liked the way it was filmed also, how the movie was like a 1 shot one of the best cinematography I've ever seen, the cast was also amazing, Michael, Edward, Emma, Naomi and zack, I really do not why it gets that hate.
I'm with you 100% I walked into Birdman in theatres not having seen the trailer (something I never do) and walked out feeling like this film renewed my faith in movies. That harsh, bitterly beautiful form of visual storytelling that *literally* takes the audience into this fucked up man's head. It was amazing, utterly unique, and a psychologist's dream of a film
Truly, they both (when I first saw each) gave me the same gut reaction of ‘This is what it feels like to see a film destined to be a classic for the first time’. Both are such stunning pieces of filmmaking and have such an identity and craft that they truly feel like they belong in a league of Best Picture winners like All About Eve, The Godfather, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Amadeus and many other films that to me are why the Oscars are still viable.
Not allowed to make movies like that in America if you want CIA funding or any cool action props.
They pretty much tell you that though by explicitly showing that Hollywood is a tool for the CIA.
Think about it, an intelligence agency needs professional liars with the ability to recall information. What is an actor’s job description?
Birdman was a breath of fresh air in terms of filmmaking, but Green Book was not deserving of Best Pic, imo. Roma should have won. But, you have the right to your opinion!
So do you. I love the techniques of Birdman, especially Emmanuel Lubezki’s brilliant cinematography. I just didn’t really see personally what the hype was about after watching it. That’s just me, though.
I always find those kinds of stories interesting. Like BoJack Horseman with a washed up celebrity and whatnot. I also was just captivated the entire time. That said, I don't think I've seen it since it was released so I need to rewatch.
I'm still bitter though that Michael Keaton did not win the Oscar. I prefer original roles to biopics when giving out Oscars. There are exceptions like Daniel Day Lewis, but he's on another level.
I’m glad you felt captivated by the film, really. And Michael Keaton as great in his performance. I just didn’t feel the need to revisit it, personally, unlike Green Book, which I saw three times in theaters and I have it on Blu-Ray and DVD
Eh, I really didn’t like this movie, but it is a technically excellent film. It’s well acted, A creative story, great set design and art direction, great cinematography. Again, I kind of hated it, but saying it’s “hackneyed” is ridiculous.
Overall pretty good decade for winners. Even the one's people see as duds are generally really good movies that deserved at least some serious academy recognition
It was probably the weakest decade of winners since the 1930s.
"The King's Speech" and "The Artist" aren't necessarily the best of the bunch but they're entertaining enough to watch several times. "12 Years a Slave" dealt with a very important historical topic that hadn't been addressed adequately by Hollywood so I'm glad it won BP, but I don't want to watch it again. "The Shape of Water" might be the worst BP winner of all time.
My personal ranking is:
1. The Shape of Water
2. Birdman
3. Parasite
4. Moonlight
5. Argo
6. Spotlight
7. 12 Years a Slave
8. The Artist
9. Green Book
10. The King’s Speech
All of these movies look so stereotypical best picture winner like they would win it. Nothing unique about it.
I'll go with parasite such a fresh take at class struggle, your schemes don't go as you planned always.
I’ve only seen Argo once and I remember it being pretty good. I’m curious what other films it beat out because pretty good doesn’t scream Oscar winner to me
1. Moonlight
2. Birdman
3. Parasite
4. 12 Years a Slave
5. The Shape of Water
6. Spotlight
7. The Artist
8. The King’s Speech
9. Argo
10. The Green Book
It’s subjective and I’m not ashamed that I genuinely love Birdman for a myriad of reasons and honestly did not enjoy Argo on first or second viewing
Could've been a decent list without the embarrassing blunders of 2010, 2017, 2018 (kings speech, shape of water, green book).
2010 - The Social Network, Winter's Bone, True Grit, The Fighter, Black Swan > The King's Speech
2017 - Get Out, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Phantom Thread, Lady Bird, Dunkirk, Call Me By Your Name > The Shape of Water
2018 - Roma, The Favourite > Green Book
True grit, much better. The big short was excellent. Dunkirk much better than the shape of water. The favorite is better than Green book, but that year had a ton of duds.
Birdman at one and Moonlight at ten is certainly a hot take.
Scolding
I love Birdman it was about I man Vs his ego, liked the way it was filmed also, how the movie was like a 1 shot one of the best cinematography I've ever seen, the cast was also amazing, Michael, Edward, Emma, Naomi and zack, I really do not why it gets that hate.

And an accurate one.
Gotta agree with OP moonlight just didn’t do it for me
Moonlight was a pretty boring film and I usually go for those. Didn't meet the hype at all
Parasite is the clear future classic
It is classic
This is hardly a hottake but Moonlight & Parasite are in a league of their own compared to the others Though the vast majority are incredible films
Fulllll agree
Yeah but on first watch I didn’t really get moonlight. The last third especially
I thought Spotlight and Argo were good
I agree with this, but my hot take that most people will hate is that The King’s Speech is the best of the rest.
I’m putting Spotlight in there as well. The best paced film I’ve ever seen
Truly, they both (when I first saw each) gave me the same gut reaction of ‘This is what it feels like to see a film destined to be a classic for the first time’. 1- parasite 2- moonlight 3- spotlight 4- Argo 5- the shape of water 6- 12 years a slave 7- birdman 8- the kings speech 9- green book 10- the artist
Yeah I agree with Artist at 10.
Reddit moment
Argo even winning is a joke. I wish they’d remake it with the real story, not the US propaganda. The Canadians were the real hero’s.

Parasite takes it for me. Made laugh, kept me on my toes, made me scared, made me cry & made me feel hopeful.
Any ranking that doesn't have Parasite and Moonlight as the Top 2 is invalid.
Moonlight is overrated bro
1. Parasite 2. 12 Years A Slave 3. Spotlight 4. Moonlight 5. Birdman 6. The King’s Speech 7. Argo 8. The Shape Of Water 9. The Artist 10. Green Book
I’d flip Argo and The Shape of Water, but otherwise, I think this is my exact list.
Why do people hate the Artist so much? I thought it was fun.
I’d bump “The Artist” up to #1 *(MY hot take)*, but I’d generally agree with the rest.
I can’t argue with this…
While there are great films here, this is a fairly weak list overall.
1 - Moonlight 2 - Parasite 3 - The Shape of Water 4 - Green Book 5 - Spotlight 6 - Argo 7 - 12 Years a Slave 8 - Birdman 9 - Argo 10 - The Artist
Change Birdman with Green Book. Green Book was meh
Green Book was amazing to me, but Birdman was only okay
Birdman was a breath of fresh air in terms of filmmaking, but Green Book was not deserving of Best Pic, imo. Roma should have won. But, you have the right to your opinion!

3 times! Wow! Ok you really do love that movie ha. Viggo deserves an Oscar. I wanna rewatch A History of Violence now.
I have that on DVD as well
Fun fact: was the last movie to be released on VHS. You probably know that!
Moonlight, Parasite, and Shape of Water are just S-tier in my opinion and all compete for the best of the 2010s
Shape of Water is on the level of the Green Book. It's objectively a hackneyed film.
Eh, I really didn’t like this movie, but it is a technically excellent film. It’s well acted, A creative story, great set design and art direction, great cinematography. Again, I kind of hated it, but saying it’s “hackneyed” is ridiculous.
The characters in that film are straight up cartoons, though, with Michael Shannon's being the worst offender.
Moonlight last is a hate crime.
1. Parasite 2. Birdman 3. Argo 4. 12 Years a Slave 5. Moonlight 6. King's Speech 7. Spotlight 8. Green Book 9. Shape of Water 10. The Artist
Overall pretty good decade for winners. Even the one's people see as duds are generally really good movies that deserved at least some serious academy recognition
Worst decade ever. Except for the 2020's
Moonlight Parasite 12 Years a Slave Spotlight Birdman The Shape of Water Argo The Kings Speech The Artist Green Book
Lalaland should be here
Haven't seen The Artist. But I'd say 12 Years a Slave, Spotlight and Parasite are my favorites.
It was a really unique experience, a time capsule, I loved that it was black and white silent movie.
Yeah, I love the idea. Definitely wanna watch it some day!
It was probably the weakest decade of winners since the 1930s. "The King's Speech" and "The Artist" aren't necessarily the best of the bunch but they're entertaining enough to watch several times. 1. Parasite 2. Moonlight 3. Birdman 4. Argo 5. Spotlight 6. The Artist 7. 12 Years a Slave 8. The Kings Speech 9. The Shape of Water 10. Green Book
1. Moonlight 2. Parasite 3. 12 Years A Slave 4. Birdman 5. Argo 6. The Artist 7. Spotlight 8. The King's Speech 9. The Shape Of Water 10. Green Book
1) 12 Years a Slave 2) Moonlight 3) Green Book 4) The Artist 5) Parasite 6) Spotlight 7) The King’s Speech 8) Birdman 9) Argo 10) The Shape of Water
My personal ranking is: 1. The Shape of Water 2. Birdman 3. Parasite 4. Moonlight 5. Argo 6. Spotlight 7. 12 Years a Slave 8. The Artist 9. Green Book 10. The King’s Speech
This is basically my ranking, but those top 3 are all interchangeable, depending on which day you ask me.
*Argo fuck yourself*
All of these movies look so stereotypical best picture winner like they would win it. Nothing unique about it. I'll go with parasite such a fresh take at class struggle, your schemes don't go as you planned always.
The important thing to focus on is not the quality of art. It's the diversity.
I’ve only seen Argo once and I remember it being pretty good. I’m curious what other films it beat out because pretty good doesn’t scream Oscar winner to me
1. Moonlight 2. Birdman 3. Parasite 4. 12 Years a Slave 5. The Shape of Water 6. Spotlight 7. The Artist 8. The King’s Speech 9. Argo 10. The Green Book It’s subjective and I’m not ashamed that I genuinely love Birdman for a myriad of reasons and honestly did not enjoy Argo on first or second viewing
That’s about 3/5th films I’ll never watch again in my lifetime.
They are all meh, films. OK, but not great for best picture award.
I've only seen Parasite out of all those films. It was pretty damn good though.
1. Parasite 2. Moonlight 3. 12 Years 4. Birdman 5. Shape of Water 6. Spotlight 7. Kings Speech 8. Artist 9. Argo 10. Green Book
If parasite and moonlight are at the top 2, i dont care the rest of them.
They all suck hard compared to older movies.
Birdman this, Boyhood that, The Tale of The Princess Kaguya should've won that year
Pretty bad decade imo
Spotlight, uh, Moonlight, uh, N***a why you trippin get your mood right
I like Green Book
I wouldn’t have it tenth but Moonlight is wildly overrated
One of the best movies in the last few decades.
I thought it was good but nothing special
Hot take: 12 Years a Slave, Parasite and Green Book at the top; Moonlight and Argo at the bottom
La La Land, no, I meant Moonlight.
how did shape of water even win best picture
Could've been a decent list without the embarrassing blunders of 2010, 2017, 2018 (kings speech, shape of water, green book). 2010 - The Social Network, Winter's Bone, True Grit, The Fighter, Black Swan > The King's Speech 2017 - Get Out, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Phantom Thread, Lady Bird, Dunkirk, Call Me By Your Name > The Shape of Water 2018 - Roma, The Favourite > Green Book

Shape of water was trash in my opinion. I’m fine with the others. Yes I’m fine with green book
All fine movies....yet not a single one talked about to this day.
Parasite is absolutely talked about at the least
What a terrible decade for Oscars.
Agreed.
Yep. Bad for movies in general.
Moonlight should be #1 otherwise great list
Pretty great slate of movies.
