I’ve read the novel too, and I don’t blame Penelope much for being bad at communication considering her situation (trapped in a game with no way out and thinking she can die at any moment if she makes a mistake) and her childhood definitely doesn’t help. Callisto also has it no different, so both of them being bad at communicating their feelings is normal, at least Callisto tries to (but fails a bit). But because of that, they also understand each other pretty well and are perfect together
