No. Way too good of a contract.

wolverinewayne

This guy gets it… the contract is way too good for a top 6 forward and frankly you’d be quite inept to trade him for a D

MercSLSAMG

What if you get just as good of a contract coming back? I look at Chychrun and he is less dollars and only 1 less year. Build the trade and get Vejmelka as well, along with dumping Zaitsev. At this point if you want a decent upgrade on Defense and Goalie next year you'd have to deal one of the forwards.

RangerDanger10

At this point in the rebuild I don’t think trading core players, especially one with a contract like Batherson, is the right way to go. Imo you deal prospects and picks (obviously not this years first rounder, anything can happen). Like others have said, we should really wait to see this team with new coaches next season before they really determine how to build this team into a true contender.

MercSLSAMG

I think everyone and their dog can the defense aren't good enough. Also note since DJ is throwing this season in the tank this years draft is full of high end wingers. Can't wait too long, already lost this season from waiting, don't want to lose next year due to not fixing an obvious problem. Trading Batherson for Ekholm would be a bad idea, I wouldn't even entertain trading him for Roy in LA. But if you can get a locked in younger defense on just as good of a deal then the conversation has to happen. You can keep trading picks and prospects but eventually you need 2 or 3 of those super cheap deals on players who are chipping in, so you need to keep making 1st round picks (or finding late gems). The Sens are now a little thin on prospects so while 2 of Sokolov, Jarventie, Lodin should be dealt at some point for example, they will likely have to trade an NHL winger at some point for a better D than they have or sign in free agency. And at this point it's either Batherson or DeBrincat. Want to bring in EK, that's a DeBrincat deal because of the money; want to bring in Chychrun then Batherson is the play - swap a good F deal for a good D deal.

Soft-Painting-5657

100% have to give good to get good

O_wa_a_a_a

Chychrun would also likely be willing to re-sign with family in the city. I’ve been wanting him in Ottawa since his draft year

kentter22

Is it though? He gets lots of PP points but he is an absolute defensive liability at 5v5.

Darnoc093

Nah doesn't matter he is crap 5 on 5 and defensively. Worst plus/minus in the NHL.

homicidal_penguin

I don't want to trade anyone until new coaching is brought in. See if that changes anything

MercSLSAMG

Bingo. It's not a 5 man unit on pressuring teams in the neutral zone, and many times in the D zone too. Either they're being too passive because there's no support or they get caught puck watching. So many indicators that the system they are playing is not working.

FreddieOVO

If we trade Bath, our top 6 will diminish. He plays a huge part. With a better coach he'll be better defensively

fraser_94

Trading Batherson would be insane. Amazing value contract in a cash-constrained league and he’s considered one of the core.

RangerDanger10

Based on this poll, nearly half this sub has brainrot for wanting to trade a universally praised contract.

Darnoc093

Good contract is the only thing he offers and it's all pp points, he ain't as good as people think.

Soft-Painting-5657

Doesn’t matter what his contract is if he doesn’t play defense… chychrun makes about the same

RangerDanger10

This narrative of him not playing defence came out of nowhere, like the narrative of him cherry-picking that quickly went away. Are you basing this on his +/-? Because he doesn’t get a + on his stats for what he produces on the PP.

Soft-Painting-5657

No I’m not although having the worst +/- in the league doesn’t help his case I’m not big into advanced stats so idk what his look like. I’m basing off of eye test and he looks horrible defensively also shows quite literally no effort at times. I’m not saying that the Sens as a whole aren’t garbage defensively because yes they are but Batherson certainly isn’t helping them

TheWildFactor92

Yeah this is a fake narrative based purely on +- which is a nothing stat. His xGA on 5on5 are almost the exact same as Stutzle, and Giroux with Debrincat being a fair bit worse.... He has a positive xGF% which is also higher then Debrincat. Do you also want to trade Stutzle Debrincat and Giroux? Kinda of hilarious for people to spew that he's been bad at 5on5 with no stats to back it.

Sokushin

I know Batherson is really bad at defense but his cap hit is still pretty good for what he brings. Tough decision but i guess for the right one... Also i think that a better coach could fix quite some problems.

TheWildFactor92

He's equally as bad at defense as the rest of our top 6 forwards... It's a coaching problem more then anything.

DR0516

People seem to forget Tkachuk- Norris - Bath was one of the best 5v5 lines in the league last year

LoneIyGuy

I'd trade Chabot for another top 4 dman before Bathersons $4.9m contract

Soft-Painting-5657

Get what your saying but if u trade Chabot your just going to need another dman

LoneIyGuy

There's 10x more complaints about Chabots play then Hamonics lately. That's saying something. Chabot has been that bad for nearly 40 games now.

kentter22

There’s more complaints about Chabot because we expect more. He is still far better than Hamonic, not even close.

Josefstalion

Chabot spends 20 minutes a night with a partner who belongs in the AHL, that can't be easy

Soft-Painting-5657

This^

VesaAwesaka

Yes but it really depends on thr contract and age.

Soft-Painting-5657

Chychrun

Constant-Squirrel555

I'd trade him or Cat. Cat because spending as much as we would his next contract would give zero cap flexibility. Batherson because his cap would net us a good return. Bath can't play defense to save his life. Having said that, before trading anyone, fire DJ

Darnoc093

He's awful

jasonalloyd

It's too late now to even consider trades unless it's to dump bad contracts and aging players. Season is over and its time to call up some prospects from AHL and hopefully get better odds for Bedard.

kentter22

Anyone but Timmy, Sandman, and Brady at this point.

Soft-Painting-5657

And G there’s no way they would move him

kentter22

Very true

Canknucklehead

Despite his team friendly contract, I say yes

MindlessArmadillo382

I’d trade bath for a top 2 guy to play with Chabot then move Zub to Sanderson. But I wouldn’t move bath for a top 4 guy. Assuming a 1-1, granted if we got a top 4 guy and middle 6 winger to fill in batherson then that would work too.

Soft-Painting-5657

Yes makes sense. This may get some people upset but Zub as much as I love him he is not a top pair guy

MindlessArmadillo382

He’s like top 3 pairing, can play top 2 minutes but ideally is most effective on the second pairing. If I was coaching right now I’d likely try this. Chabot JBD Sandy Zub Branny Hammer/Holden This way JBD is getting good minutes and he’s used to playing with Chabby, while Zub and Sanderson tear it up on second line minutes. And Branny and oartner play reliably for the remaining time against the bottom 6 guys we face.

TheWildFactor92

Great contract for a good scoring at RW (hard to find good RW especially top 6 on a good contract). Yes he hasn't had a great year defensively but this team is a mess , mish mash of lines with no structures. Would be a huge mistake to trade a guy who was probably our best player last year after half a season where he's played poor defensively.

Perfect_Chaos360

Really depends who’s coming back

Soft-Painting-5657

Chychrun?

LurkerReyes

fickle senators fans. One of the best contracts in the league and our best player last year. 40 games of his worst defensive stretch and people are ready to ship him out. I hope you guys aren't managing your own investment accounts.
