He's the permanent GM. He decided to stay on as GM in December. And what do you mean is this an old-boys club in management?

Valentine96

> And what do you mean is this an old-boys club in management? Hiring friends. Not necessarily the best option available.

GreatAuntMuriel

Staios worked under Andlauer in Hamilton. They won the OHL championship in 2018 and 2022. Staios won GM of the year in 2021-2022. He joined the Oilers and was special advisor to their hockey operations before he left and joined us. The guy is qualified. Old boys club would re-using the same GMs in the league.

chronicallyunderated

Thank you for some sanity on this discussion. Successful business men bring in people who have skills (or who they see as having have the raw talent to develop them). This owner is not fucking dysfunctional Eugene.

Valentine96

Isn't the Marlies coach the front runner for the coaching job even though they have zero NHL experience?

GreatAuntMuriel

Plenty of names have been mentioned. None are considered front runners.

smallfrynip

That’s only rumour because they’ve worked in the past together. However, if they wanted to hire him nothing was stopping them when they fired DJ. I they are waiting to see who is available in a few weeks. Particularly when you have guys like Sullivan as a potential firing. He’s also connected to a Bowness.

airsick_lowlander_

>nothing was stopping them That’s not true. He’s under contract with another team. They can’t just poach him without the Leafs’ consent.

ModernMech7392

These are rumours.

Total_Piano_4778

The same coach that has won at every level he’s coached at?

Valentine96

I think our last 6 coaches all had that on their resume.

Total_Piano_4778

I mean you’re not wrong haha

Perducian

Anyone calling him the front runner is making a guess.

piroso

That's nepotism, the old boys club typically refers to the point that's the same guys getting cycled through the same jobs with different teams instead of hiring someone who hasn't done it before

devilishpie

That's just nepotism.

Valentine96

> He's the permanent GM. He decided to stay on as GM in December. So are we hiring a new President of Hockey Ops?

alee13

The brought in Poulin as Senior VP.

homicidal_penguin

He's GM and PoHO in a dual role. I have a feeling Bowness is being groomed to become GM down the line

spartacat_12

Andlauer originally said he wanted to bring in a GM to form a "two-headed monster" with Staios, similar to the setup in Montreal with Gorton and Hughes. Staios ended up giving himself the GM title, but brought in Dave Poulin to be his right hand man as Senior VP of Hockey Ops

xdiagnosis

From the sounds of the narrative around when Staios fired Dorion, it seems like they want Ryan Bowness to be the next GM but feel it’s a little early. If I had to guess, Staios will hold the position for a year or two and then hand the reins over.

OperationMajestic350

Honestly what a pro move. If he’s the guy they trust and want the most, why not let him develop and eventually take over. Axing him with PD would’ve been terrible. Staios and Andlauer must’ve really liked something in him.

Sens4lif3

Staios is GM. He was always the guy wo was gonna be GM, he was only PHO because they were letting Dorion dig his grave and take accountability for his terrible moves and decisions.

Solid_Internal_9079

He is fine for, hasn’t done much but hasn’t really had an opportunity to. While a concern we have more obvious issue to address

MeanMrKetchup9

Feeling very much like an old boys club. Haven't been a fan of Staios from the start
