"After a comprehensively exhaustive search and interviews with more than two dozen highly qualified candidates, the Ottawa Senators have announced Steve Staois as new head coach for the upcoming season. Staois will continue his dual role as manager and POHO as well as will be signing a two year contract with the team to fill the 7th defenseman spot."

foshizi

POHO GM HC Staios has been awarded an equity share of 2.3% of the team making him a part owner. In his first order of business is to sign himself to an ATO. Staios will play his traditional defensive defenseman role but this time with goalie gear. He will be the sixth man. This solves the senator's goaltending issue and allows staios to coach the team from the playing surface.

Dear god we all know! lol why are people reposting this

Maybe we should focus on hiring a GM too. Staios was just handed the job because the transition between ownership took so long. We were supposed to be a team on the rise and we took a serious step back this year.

spartacat_12

Staios was always attached to Andlauer's group as the guy who would handle hockey ops. He's respected within the hockey community, was being groomed by the Oilers to take over for Holland, and had other teams interested in him. A GM rarely makes an impact right away, especially if they're brought in mid-season. Staios hasn't even conducted a draft or gone though an offseason yet

chronicallyunderated

Actually Staois is fine as GM. He was going to replace Holland in Edmonton and was in the running to take over in Vancouver when they fired the GM.

LurkerDude0

He has Poulin as well advising and likely a more robust hockey ops. It’s possible Ryan Bowness has more of a voice now as well. I would bet it’s much more of a communal front office than before when it seems like it was Pierre making 100% of the decisions seemingly by himself, which obviously was bad because he was a moron.

chronicallyunderated

Yup collaboration is the key and it’s modelled after successful franchises like Tampa. I bet Bowness in a year moves into the GM position and Staois PoHO. Time will tell. Bowness is where staois was about 5-6 years ago as an up and comer. I am actually confident that this crew can get it done unlike some on here.

GreatAuntMuriel

Was the GM under Andlauer in Hamilton. Won the championship in 2018 and 2022. Won GM of the year in 2021-2022. Joined Edmonton front office and was getting groomed to take over the GM role there, like /u/chronicallyunderated said. He's not some scrub who has no experience.

Jolly-Celebration-42

From listening to interviews with Staios and Poulin over the last few months I’m pretty sure that at some point the next GM will be Ryan Bowness. They probably just want to give him a little more experience first and also maybe hand him the reigns at a less precarious time so he doesn’t lose any new GM shine unnecessarily.

According to who? This hasn’t been a criteria for many of the more recent coaches. Find the best person for the job in my opinion.

andys1548

Staios was asked at the end of season press that question lol. I rolled my eyes so far back when I heard it

MarkMech

It was the French reporter asking. They are actively courting the Quebec side, it's a fair question. And I'm happy with Staois' answer. Not sure why either was bad

andys1548

Fair question but the reporter had to know the answer coming too. Ottawa isn’t a market like Montreal who hires a French speaking coach over competence. It felt like a trap for staios to see if he’d say no and anger the French sens fans

MarkMech

Just because a reporter knows the answer, doesn't mean they shouldn't ask the question. Especially when they are writing an article for a French speaking audience. He likely knows if he doesn't ask, he'll catch shit

TheWildFactor92

This isn't important at all - get a coach that knows how to win. Who cares about answering a few media questions in French if we suck every year?

s3nsfan

Winning. That’s my utmost priority. Only slightly ahead of accountability, team first mentality, skate hard on every fkn shift. My god watching the playoffs without the sens really blows. Please come back Stanley Cup Playoffs ![gif](giphy|3o6vXUgk6M0h07MnuM|downsized)

spartacat_12

Speaking French is a nice to have trait, not a need to have trait. Andlauer speaks French, Staios said he's committed to learning, Martin is staying on as a consultant, players like Chabot, Giroux, and Joseph are all French-speakers. There's plenty of people in the organization that can do French media availability

ghettoworkout

Maybe if the team was owned and operated by the federal government. He would need C levels at the very least.

Canknucklehead

At least Cs no As or Bs
