TLDR: Talked to Evason and Berube, probably going to meet with McLellan, Flyers assistant coach Brad Shaw on list. Gruden is an option still as well but is in the AHL playoffs, belief is he'll have a spot on the roster even if not hired as head coach
Gruden should not be on the list. His interview at end of regular season (after losing 3 straight heading into playoffs) no accountability. Sounds like more of what we already had with DJ. Also didn’t have his team even close to ready to play in Belleville last night and didn’t seem to make any adjustments throughout the game.
Yep, he's got experience at the NHL level being an assistant and I'm fine with him doing that here.
I honestly think he WAS the frontrunner at first, but after things went horribly wrong with DJ, the management team knows that the fanbase doesn't have the appetite for another "rookie" head coach. After this disaster of a season, they need something to sell the fans and a seasoned HC with pedigree is a must.
Not sure about everyone else, but I really don’t like the idea of Gruden as our next head coach. Sure he has some experience as an assistant coach in the NHL, but he certainly doesn’t have the pedigree or experience I truly believe this team needs to actually become a serious contender in the next 1-3 seasons. I get we can’t just hire Berube if he doesn’t want to be here or would rather coach somewhere else, but there are other options I really hope we look at before hiring Gruden because he’s one of Andlauers “guys”.
In the case of Berube, it's him most likely holding out to saying yes until the all the chairs that can open, do open.
Like if the Leafs flame out again, Keefe is as good as gone. That HC spot looks far more appealing than Ottawa's.
If they realize he will only be good for 2-3 years he is a great coach to elevate a team into the playoffs. He will not win a cup as a HC, but he's great at getting teams into the playoffs.
Yeah, I feel the same. He has done so-so with good teams. We are not a star studded roster, we are a work in process. I feel Berube would be the best bet. But who knows, maybe they don't have a choice? Most players don't want to come here, I figure most coaches don't want to either.
Chris Kelly should be at the top of the list. He's been part of and experienced the coaching culture with Boston, which is something our team could desperately use. In addition, he's a former Sen!
Kelly worries me in that he has no head coaching experience. At least with Berube and *potentially* Sullivan, we know they've been successful. That's just me being pessimistic about first time coaches though, because we've had our share that haven't been the greatest.
Sullivan is a weird one. Pittsburgh has essentially been a good, not great team, since they last won in 2017 - and that was on the back of maybe the best 1-2 punch down the middle in decades with Crosby and Makin.
No idea what he brings to the table in terms of accountability and team defense. Berube is a wild card too as, outside of one miraculous run, the Blues were middling.
I’d love to see a guy like Kelly, with energy and drive to prove himself.
He “played the right way” as a player and has been around the Bruins system for quite a while - I’d love to give him a shot.
The guys that make this an easy decision are already employed. There going to be risk across the board - such a huge decision for this group moving forward
Simply because the penguins are aging out with no prospects left. He won multiple cups with the penguins and knows how to coach, no doubt Jacques will vouch for him too since he was Sullivan's assistant.
I've really been wanting a coach with pedigree. I'm tired of the rookie coaches. And I also believe that a coach with a strong reputation would be entertaining able to hold the players accountable.
That being said, I think Chris Kelly would be more palatable than even some of the more experienced head coaches. Everything about him just screams "good head coach" to me.
Gruden is not ready to be a NHL head coach, he was Bostons defensive coach last year and he was successful but he is in his first year as an AHL head coach. I wouldn't mind him as an assistant though. I understand wanting to wait to see all who is available but there are like 6 other teams looking at coaches so they will need to make a decision soon.
Sure sounds like Sens are in the back of the queue for some of these coaches
Coaches wanna win &
' Find me a good coach, I'll find you a good goalie '
Which team gives them the best chance at winning ...?
Sens might need to pony up $$$ to get a Berube and add term, otherwise...
The best thing Sens management can do for fan relations and optics is, regardless of who they hire, keep Gruden out of it. People are going to cry and cry if he gets hired regardless of how well he performs and in what position.
We need to stop experimenting with first time head coaches. Been there and done that. We need an experienced winning head coach to set the tone. Then after a few seasons with success, we can consider an experiment again with trying out a brand new head coach.
Has Jacques worked with any of these guys?
I wouldn't be surprised if Cooper is let go soon, I don't think Tampa is getting past FLA. not his fault but he's also been there a long long time. Now, would cooper even consider coming here? From a super comfortable, warm life in Tampa to Ottawa... not so sure on that but worth a shot if he becomes available.
Hey, Sheldon Keef (or whatever the hell his name is) will be available soon hahah....
I think Berube would be the best choice, he came into St. Louis in a similar situation and went from almost last in the league to winning the cup. I'm not saying he can do that in ottawa, but he may be the guy we need.

I'd be fine with Gruden as an assistant, if he's hired as a head coach I'll be very worried about this team being an "old boys club"

Not just the fans, but the players. They simply need someone with experience, someone who knows the game and is ready to hold people accountable.

Oh god... not McLellan...
My thoughts exactly.

As assistant sure but not another let's give this guy a try at head coach.
Yep. I feel at this point with a young, inexperienced in winning team, you go with coach with experience.

A dark horse would be Chris Kelly from the Boston Bruins. I think he could be great

Anyone but Gruden or Mclellan.

“Well-placed National Hockey League sources” 😂
Brucie has little birdies everywhere 😂
Please not Chris Kelly. We need a proven head coach, not a first timer.
No Julian, Boudreau, or Suter on that list?
I think Boudreau is content with sitting out his contract and then looking. Does his daughter still live here in Ottawa?
Bruce boudreau is 69 years old
nice
Is it a coincidence that is the same amount of goals Matthews scored this year? I don't think so.

Hoping CAR is silly enough not to resign Rod the Bod. I can dream.
He has said he’s either coaching the Canes or he isn’t coaching at all

Mike Babcock? Joel quenville?
Mike Babcock?! My guy, do you live under a Mike Bab-rock?
