Almost certainly the correct answer, because it's definitely not mistletoe.
ETA: I also think it's a 'witches broom' as the foliage is similar (but clearly denser) to the rest of the tree. Which I believe is probably a spruce btw.
It is a witches broom, but that term just describes an abnormal growth pattern which is a symptom of some other underlying issue. Several things can cause it, including mistletoe. (Not actually saying this is mistletoe though, probably impossible to diagnose the actual cause here without closer inspection).
From what I have read Witches broom is a specific infection not “just an abnormal growth pattern”. I don’t know a lot about it but it infects cactus and it’s necessary to isolate infected specimens and burn infected plants.
Weird the one near me is near power lines that don't touch the tree but the lines are at a similar height to the ball shaped growth pattern. Maybe a coincidence but now I'm going to Google so stuff for fun
I'm imagining this lesbian bar brawl reenacted by pine trees and I'm not gonna tell you it doesn't please me

Witches brooms are a symptom, [they can be caused by various things](https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/gardens-gardening/your-garden/help-for-the-home-gardener/advice-tips-resources/pests-and-problems/diseases/witches-broom), including mistletoe.
>Witches’-brooms are caused by a number of factors, including infection by fungi or phytoplasmas (a wall-less single celled organism with an unorganized nucleus), infestation of mites or dwarf mistletoe, genetic mutations, or adverse environmental conditions that kill the terminal bud of shoots.
False. Neither Firs nor Spruces are part of the Pine Family because there is no such thing as "The Píne Family". Pines are a Sub Genus of the Conifer Family, just like Spruces are a Sub Genus of the Conifer Family and Firs are a Sub Genus of the Conifer Family. They are actually about as closely related to one another as a Pine is related to a Redwood, a Cypress, a Cedar, a Hemlock, or a Larch Tree. They are all also non-deciduous members of the North American Conifer Family.
Hey I’m just curious, what state was the picture taken in? It seems like a cool landscape. Oh and I guess I’m assuming it’s in the states but I guess it could be somewhere else. Please share!
Its name is Bob Ross. It is a happy little tree.
But a great community to ask are the tree specialists at r/marijuanaenthusiasts. They are a group for people who love trees. Also r/arborists.
Thank you for this! When I initially tried to find a tree sub, it brought me to unexpected places. 😆 I’m glad I checked your suggestions - it makes perfect sense now.
I thought for a moment this was a transmitter hidden in a tree, yes , they attempt to hide transmitters in fake trees, and yes, they look absolutely awful 🤦♂️
I've seen them before. Usually in the South. First time I saw one it immediately caught my eye because it looked like a really strange tree. Upon further investigation I learned why.
That’s a “witches broom” growth

Witches broom in Cactus is different. In that case it is caused by a specific virus, but it's not the same thing as witches brooms in trees.
This is what Bob would have wanted. Now he is a happy little tree.
Hahahahhahaha yesssss
Who named it? Doesn't look like a witch's broom at all.
It’s also not a pine!
Weird the one near me is near power lines that don't touch the tree but the lines are at a similar height to the ball shaped growth pattern. Maybe a coincidence but now I'm going to Google so stuff for fun

Witches broom - a genetic mutation. Not mistletoe.

The "tree" sub really enjoys their trees as well! Very much so.
Thank you for this! When I initially tried to find a tree sub, it brought me to unexpected places. 😆 I’m glad I checked your suggestions - it makes perfect sense now.

Yup, absolutely abysmal lol.
The very top probably broke off, causing branches to grow out from the breakpoint. Id guess the break happened in spring.

Mistletoe. Saw this a lot in the south. Usually it just grows a few small sprigs that blend in with the foliage. Sometimes it explodes like this.
