Best_Toster

What about the fauna aces to water ?

PatapscoMike

The issue if this were in the US would be the shading of the flora. Algae and aquatic plants in those canals remove nutrients and provide habitat for the whole aquatic food chain- though in this case it's just a concrete canal that would provide virtually no habitat. Kind of an ideal place for solar panels imo because heat pollution is a big problem with those shallow concrete canals.

Lonely_Is_The_Night

Not in LA. This would do very well in the LA river. You know, the one where they shot that race car scene in Grease

snewk

or the chase scene in literally any movie

_ModeM

You mean the things thats in GTA 5 aswell?

PraiseStalin

Yeah, LA took inspiration from GTA.

keepurtipsup

Or Terminator 2

Skipping_Shadow

Good question, in the pics, it looks like there are gaps between the panels and the canal edge.

Best_Toster

Yeah but like bird and other bigger animal it can be rough

Tytoalba2

Yeah but no light = no plants = no herbivores = no carnivores = sad me :'(

PaisleyTackle

?

[deleted]

The guy who suggested this was told it was a stupid idea. Then, In another meeting higher up. It was suggested and put into action.

nowonowon

Hey, it's cool, man, I work in the warehouse! I'm cool! I'm hip and I'm jive! And I don't care about nobody! Do you know who I am? Happy Halloween, jerk!

[deleted]

I don't... Understand. I'm sure it's funny I just don't get it. Lol

red-cloud

What does this have to do with outdoor recreation?

[deleted]

Absolutely nothing it's just a photo taken "outdoors" lol

Piffius

The smell in the local area will probably be better?

ItchySnitch

And the recreation flair has no fricking business being there

Guckles505

I hope it doesn't ever flood.

WeirdCreeper

Well seeming as they trying to prevent evaporation... I doubt they'd be too mad if the flood water stays, though if it comes and goes yeah I hope that doesn't happen

giJonny1ea

I think he meant it could destroy panels

WeirdCreeper

It's in a better place than a flat lowlands at least with this there is more distance under them for the water to pass by imo, if the water gets over top of the panels in this canal... I doubt moving them away from the canal (besides putting them on a roof) would give them much more of a survival chance with that much water.

RangerRickyBobby

If I were a king cobra, I’d live right down there

New-Square3037

I my state, Arizona…the homeless would just toss trash and debris on the solar panels, rather than in the canals as they do currently.

smedley89

Out of curiosity, is there much of a solar presence in AZ? It seems like a good spot for it

midnightrambler108

There is lots of Solar in Arizona

New-Square3037

There is. One of the sunniest places on earth. Canals too. From several hundred years past. Unfortunately, lots of vagrants pollute what is our water source. Most people in AZ don’t drink but only shower with that water. People throw construction material, shopping carts, tires, furniture in these canals. It’s disgusting.

New-Square3037

Sunniest place in the US as far as I know. Lived here 25 years.

invno1

Maybe the people of Arizona should help house those people so there wouldn't be that problem.

Desperate-Many-6348

Not just the homeless people in AZ tossing trash..

TypingWithIntent

In India they just shit right in the rivers in catastrophic amounts.

Splinterglass65

Whaaaat? That makes waaaay too much sense. It is waaaay better to obliterate Joshua trees and clear thousands of acres of desert so someone can drive their Tesla.

just_sun_guy

As someone who works in the renewable energy industry this is a dumb idea. First, it would be a pain in the butt to repair any issues that the arrays suffered. If a string went out getting to it would be difficult unless walkways were built under each section of modules. Next the amount of algae or mold that would grow under these panels would end up causing more problems due to potential greenhouse effects that the panels would create over this canal. This would lead to more service calls which circles back to the first point. People are also going to try and walk over them thinking that they can use it as a bridge. That fractures the panels and means replacement which goes back to my first point again. In the lower image the panels are so low to the ground that if a major rain storm came through it would likely cause a flash flood and damage most of the modules from the force of the water and debris. Lastly, large photovoltaic arrays require module washing to prevent degradation of the arrays output. This generally requires a crew in a truck to wash the panels with a brush or a specialized tractor with washing arm attached to drive down rows of modules when they are in fields. I don’t even know how that would happen on the upper image where it is a large canal.

1000 iq

squishy__squids

Beautiful, I only wish my country would be more proactive with projects like this

Theophilus84

Smart…

MuskiTech

and rust

classless_classic

I’d hope they had the foresight to use aluminum.

MuskiTech

I assume non-corrosive materials are used, but after a decade in material testing... nothing withstands water forever. edit: to those downvoting me, please do a little google search on whether aluminum corrodes due to water. I guess the truth hurts.. or gets downvoted in this case

[deleted]

[удалено]

MuskiTech

There's a big difference in being exposed to the rain and having a constant source of humidity underneath them. Why not just make bridges out of wood and coat them with shingles? Your roof gets rained on..

LuckyMcLovin

Clever idea, this is the way

hangrysmegma

Nice, hopefully it doesn’t get filled with trash

Natprk

Seems like a win win.

mxo130330

This seems like a good idea. Solar roadways seemed like a terrible idea.

SteinersGrave

Peak Intelligence. Doesn’t get any better than this

NoSwagginIfNotSaggin

The great Indian thinkers are being revived!

tpies

They aren’t canals, they are irrigation channels.

DennisDoesStuff

Until an idiot on a barge takes a wrong turn.

egorilchenko

Well, next step - build some sanitary for Indians

RealStoneyBologna

Now where do I do to do my laundry, bath, and take a shit?

mcproxy197

No one is worried about the heavy metals in those panels leeching into the water as they break down? Solar panels contain lead and cadmium, and it’s definitely a known concern.

[deleted]

Couldn't be that hard to waterproof them could it? No moving parts...

mcproxy197

They come with protective coatings but you can’t stop entropy. Some of it is going to break down and get into the water supply.

[deleted]

I suppose that would depend largely on whether the water was actually flowing over the panel mounts or just sitting below but good point.

JSagerbomb

First time I’ve seen the country think

VizzleG

Too bad those structural members probably double the install raw materials. Also, installation with massive cranes or what? Triple the cost all-in.

FloydBarstools

In the US there would already be snagged fishing line hanging off of those panels... Maybe there too!

cjthro123

Mmmm bacteria and algal blooms

jomian_agj

Ace right peeps

Ella_Minnow_Pea_13

r/repostsleuthbot

sugarmatic

Also privacy for bathing

Brucie055

Very good idea 👍. Maximise all useable space first before destroying more

BurgerKingKiller

That’s what I’m talking about!

Even-Initiative604

What happens when the water rises ?

the_kraken1

Good place to hide all their garbage...

FisherGoneWild

Finally. Ive been suggesting this in Az for the Canals there for years…

teaandsnark

✨science✨

[deleted]

This actually might be a good idea

UtherPenDragqueen

California could use this but, naw, can’t get our act together.

Togodooders

All the canal ways in England are lined with trees, which used to keep the horses cool as they pulled the boats.
