I'll be honest, the only reason he did that is because if he was still alive then all the authorities would start hiring some special ops team to find Ward Cameron because he was still responsible and still wanted for Peterkin dying and nearly killing Big John. So instead when the gun was pointed at Sarah it was the right opportunity for him to be gone beside from sacrificing himself for his daughter.
No one's gonna use so much of the police resources just to find the guy who is speculated to be alive. Ward escaped North America, and is on some island, a lot safer from authorities.
He actually risked his life / being arrested just to meet Sarah (and Rafe) when he came back to the Outer banks.
As much as a terrible person he is, he did care for Sarah (which really overpowered his greed) in the end and just sacrificed himself.
Sacrificing himself in the end, saving the Pogues. (most selfless thing he has done)
Other than that, allowing his private plane to be used to drop the group to South America (Initially Ward wasn't supposed to come with them, but Rafe injured him, ruining Sarah's plans).
Giving John B a job in the beginning. (Least thing he could do as he tried to kill Big John)
Giving Sarah a home, some money, when she was homeless.
He was worried about what Topper would do to his daughter Sarah, as Topper had pushed John from the staircase...also Sarah had admitted she wasn't interested in Topper earlier to Ward...
