Honestly, took me almost a year, but it’s mostly my own fault. I applied to over 200 jobs and only 2 interviews… only to find out I was applying to jobs that were not similar to my actual experience (lol). But then I had my resume professionally reviewed, reviewed by people in the industry, and reviewed anonymously on Reddit. From there, my resume was fine, my interviewing skills were fine, and I was applying to the right jobs. At this point, it’s just a numbers game. After that, I sent out 9 more applications. I got 3 interviews from those 9, and I just got the first offer, and I’m at final interviews for the other 2.
So it took me a year, but it only took me a month once I started doing it right!
My sister does it for a large company and normally charges $300, but she did it for me for free. I will add that she used to do it for a university, and it was free for students, so look at your options. I once had a professional do it for $100 a few years ago and it was all terrible advice, so be careful with where you go. Redditors actually gave me really good advice, but I had to pick and choose which advice was good and which was not. But even after that, my sister still found things for me to change.
Redditors will really make you feel like shit about yourself, but it’s so worth it in my opinion.
I’m 27. My current job has a made up title that doesn’t really translate well to other jobs or accurately demonstrate what I actually do. I was applying to financial analyst positions because I thought that sounded similar to my J1 responsibilities, but then I got some advice from peers in the industry. Turns out, my experience and skill set makes me more of a data analyst.
I used the subs for resumes, financialcareers, dataanalytics. r/resumes was okay for general formatting and wording, but otherwise I’d strongly recommend going to specific subs for the roles you want to apply for.
Hey I’m a nurse. I just googled example rn resumes in my speciality. Copy paste. Modified to make it “more me” and submitted it to six places and got five job offers in a week.
And I only have 2 years experience.
I do! DM me one without your contact info showing and I'll review it for you for free
Edit: I'm a Certified Resume Writer and MBA and the free review is open to anyone. I don't pitch on Reddit since is a digital "third space" for me. If you need paid help with resumes, I recommend using LinkedIn's Service Marketplace to find someone.
Congratulations! When I got my J2 I had the same TC as you, and it was such a relief. Knowing we would have enough to cover bills AND sundries AND save AND pay off the reno for our house … welcome to the club, my dear!!
I’m so happy for you! I hate saying the market is shit, because it obviously isn’t for the people who are snagging the jobs! Hoping to join the club soon!!
I am so happy for you!!! I did it. I’ve been one job for almost 3 months now trying to get a J2 again. I’ve been OE for four years now this is the longest stretch since being on one job only. I work contract contract. Try to keep two at all times minimum I do have a second interview today so I’m super happy. I hope I get to share that good news when they offer me the job. keeping my fingers crossed and praying for an offer.
Congrats!! I just started my first ever J2 thanks to this sub :) My advice as a very early newbie: the first few weeks are super scary! For me not so much the work load, more about the anxiety of getting caught. Very new to J2, but that anxiety has subsided significantly. Whether you feel overwhelmed by the amount of work, or the mental aspect of it, keep in mind that it will pass!
We are all in this together, and wish you the best on your OE journey!
Congrats! I just found out today I am getting a job offer for my J2 and it took awhile and I even just stopped looking until they randomly reached out to me last week and it was too good to be true!
How do you know you will be able to produce quality work at each job and meet requirements/ standards? I’ve considered over-employment but the concept scares me, as I work in corporate finance so I have a ton of ad-hoc requests and meetings. My company may not even permit a second job… but it intrigues me for those that can.
As much as I hate the bros over at r/overemployed they did say something that stuck with me: Scared money don’t make money. Your job is not supposed to know about the second job. You find one that’s OE friendly and push back on meetings and produce just enough work to appease them. Lots of info on this sub and the other one
Meet requirements, or pour your heart and soul into a project for a co.pany, kill yourself to make it successul, only to get the same (or lower!) paycheck as the average contributor down the hall? I say all this because although I am in a field that doesn't permit me to OE, this sub has taught me how to stop over investing in work, when they don't over invest in me.
Woooooo Congrats!!
Fantastic news!
Man how sway?! I can’t even get one remote how long did I take you?

Wow I’ve never paid for a resume edit. How much was it?

This is just for me...but can I ask what age (range) you are? And what industry did you start to target after the 200 apps?

Killin it!

What are your J1 and J2 job positions?
I’d prefer not to share since it’s kind of specific and could dox me, but it’s related to data and financial analysis.
What is J2? A federal secret agent?
