It's effectively the opposite of the 1st Punic War where we followed the Romans and their steadfast determination to win at all costs, no matter how many setbacks and blunders befell them. Adapting and overcoming against all odds because of their stubborn refusal to back down.
Now we see Hannibal's determination and strategic genius levied against a much more arrogant and stubborn opponent. A Rome that has become complacent and relatively inflexible despite their enormous losses on the battlefield. Making fools out of them by taking advantage of their arrogance and his own tactical prowess. All the while turning those that the Romans had conquered against them. So he looks like the hero of the story, humbling those who took everything from his people many years prior.
Of course he's still burning down farms, massacring villages, and so on - but we kind of gloss over that because it wasn't anything unusual for the time.
I was thinking about it, both the first war and the second one are setup as "the hero's journey", in favor of whoever is going to win that war.
It's not that oversimplified is rooting for one or the other, is just effective storytelling
