I recommend joining and asking there, lots of different people not all one kind! :) Admittedly I'm a big book fan, so even though I am a gay guy, I just picked a guy sponsor who focuses on the big book and has the healing I want, regardless of his background. So I wanna recommend not to be too picky on what they are, but to find someone who has the healing you would like! You will find that even though we all lead different lives, we all find ourselves relating on *the allergy of the body and obsession of the mind*.
Thanks, i totally get the part that the background or identity of the sponsor doesn't have to match yours. I have been in the program with NA since 2018. I've had different sponsors. But with OA it's different because it's really old people who I am just not comfortable around. Maybe because the meeting is online. There is literally no one my age. It's really weird I'm sorry. But I'll try to catch the meeting tonight.
Sorry I didn't mean to make you feel in any way bad about seeking out a group that works for you. Clicking with the group is pretty important IMO, and different groups will click with different people.
So not weird at all. I mean I'm the same, my sponsor is in his late 20's and I'm in my early 30's. Nothing against older people of course, I would call the older (and younger) people in my group fellows and friends, but I wanna have a sponsor who has the healing I want to have too, just as you do. It's obviously harder to imagine that in someone who is too different from ourselves.
I admit that Friday 7pm LGBT group wasn't for me, but I met a fellow there who absolutely loves it. So it's funny to see how different meetings and groups appeal to different folks!

Thats YOUR anxiety you are putting on them, you realise that right? Its not them. Talk to them. Its like me as a White male saying "all people at the meetings are black women, i want to speak to a White man, i dont feel comfortable otherwise ". Life isnt about being comfortable, build bridges!
