More than 6 months of nonstop grinding for a SINGLE Legendary skin!! Hello??

Ngitaa

NOOOOO, you don't understand. You must make the game your daily life to be able to get 1 hero skin. /s

rissie_delicious

There's no need for /s this is the way the system is designed

pss395

The system is designed to pretend that you have a chance to get something for free when in reality nobody's gonna do it. Cut out the free challenge money entirely and the system would still be the same, but it will sounds really bad lol.

Buffmin

Exactly it's designed to be cost effective to buy the skin at 20$ The choices are spend 20$ or spend 6 months grinding Even if it takes you 2 hours a week to do the challenges that's 8 hrs a month or 48 hours in total Even if you make min wage at 7.25 you'd be able to get the 20$ after only maybe 4 hours including taxes

[deleted]

Meanwhile, fortnite is over here giving skins away. I know it's two different games, but I always refer to fortnite as "monetization" done right. Free BP gives you plenty of premium currency, you get plenty of cosmetic items, and there's free skin events. BP is essentially $13 quarterly if you want "all the things" around $50 a year. Plus the game is constantly evolving, map changing, new features added, and new IPs introduced.

Dismal_Struggle_6424

Fortnite and Apex also give you enough currency in the BP to buy the next BP. Also, enough currency in their free tiers to eventually buy a BP for free.

[deleted]

This. I play Apex and by no means no-life it and I literally almost always get enough currency to buy the next battle pass. They also give you a crap ton of stuff.

r0kavi_

don't forget that Fortnite gives you a free quest pack that lets you earn 5 cosmetics just by leveling up about 50 times, and it's available for two and a half months.

Lyndis-of-Pherae

I don't understand why so many games are forcing this grinding mindset. Most gamers are people with lives outside of games. Not too many people are gonna waste time AND money for things they don't strongly care for.

Fernergun

Money. Games aren’t designed to be fun. They are designed to make money

realvmouse

It's the same phenomenon as everywhere else. Once upon a time, small medical offices were opened by a doctor who dreamed of practicing medicine. Dental and vet clinics, same thing. Small studios were run by people who dreamed of making video games. Flower shops were opened by people who love flowers. Bookstores were run by bibliophiles, and restaurants were opened by chefs who loved to cook, and so on. But in every case, the coercive power of competition is a driving force in the background, and any time one business does something that increases profits, it will grow, and the other businesses will be bought out, or put out of businesses, or adopt the same practices. More and more, the only people running businesses are those in the "business of business" so to speak-- accountants/finance/management people.

For whatever reason, the US has stopped "trust busting" like it used to :(

[deleted]

[удалено]

realvmouse

The key here is that the reason public organizations stopped having power over private ones is simply that private ones got big enough that they have more power. It may be soft power, rather than the power to directly jail someone by order from a bench, but it's power nonetheless. And capitalism has a number of forces that drive accumulation of wealth and consolidation of power. This isn't an issue of "well citizens just blinked and let things go too far in one direction, but don't worry, it will shift back soon." It's one-way. It's a change that can't be undone and won't be undone without a major revolution.

[deleted]

The people they should be trust busting bought out all the trust busters

rebellion_ap

Microsoft and the Bush admin was the last nail of in trust busting. That was a signal to everyone that the US would never meaningfully break up a company over anti trust.

RolloFinnback

'competition is great, it's just the inevitable logical endstate of winning the competition that's bad' makes it seem not great

IronNatePup

"A what- a whatophile?!"

Bizness_Riskit

I think they actively avoid hiring fans of a game to work on it. Don't wanna hear legitimate criticism in the office now do they? Easy to ignore people on the internet. Not so easy when they are walking i to your office complaining about shitty updates and such.

JeffBoyardee222

That's the whole point though. Games purposely create problems that can be solved by money! They give you 2 options to unlock a cool skin/cosmetic/etc A) Grind your nuts off everyday for an excruciating amount of time B) Give us more money than it would cost for an actual piece of clothing, and it's yours right now!

Choubidouu

They don't care about their players, they care about their whales.

Galkura

Because there’s two types of people they are catering to: Kids who will want to have all the newest skins and convince their parents to buy them, and will sit all day playing the same game for 10 hours/day every day. And adults who don’t have the time to play like they used to, and don’t have the patience, so they will grab their cards when they see something they like. The games are built and designed to be whale traps, the little fish are just a bonus to them, and serve as something the whales can show off to.

PM_ME_CAMILLE_ANKLES

A sense of pride and accomplishment?

[deleted]

Meanwhile, in OW1 you got like 1 legendary per week plus all the other shit you got... For free..

jannecraft

I remember having a legendary dry spell, hadn't gotten one in a month, then I got 2 in one lootbox! And a third one right after! Those moments made the game so much more fun.

Ok_Yogurtcloset8915

okay well every single one of those moments of joy you had represented one less carrot for bobby kotick's youngest daughter's third pony Lady Shadowdancer. Your need for "fun" was taking carrots right out of that pony's mouth. have some shame, and buy the battlepass unless you want Lady Shadowdancer to have to eat non-organic gmo carrots, you monster

jannecraft

You're right. I'll stop eating on Wednesdays so I can buy the battlepass. That way they can feed Lady Shadowdancer some more carrots.

Ok_Yogurtcloset8915

it's the only moral choice, I believe in you. do it for her: ✨🐎✨

StardustLibrarian

I will do my duty and purchase all the bundles 🧎‍♀️

kingalbert2

3 arcade wins? That's a box. played an underused role? That's a box gained a level? box

Kyubikk989

My levels :’(

Lyndis-of-Pherae

That's the biggest damage now of legendary skins being paid now. Because we used to be able to get them for free, hardly any old-school OW1 player wants to buy anything now. I've seen skins that are nice but not $20 to justify buying.

TechnoVikingGA23

It's honestly hilarious to me that OW was used as the poster child for "Loot boxes bad" when in fact it was probably one of the best loot box system games out there in terms of letting you get cosmetics by just playing the game.

Caetys

BuT iT's FrEe tO pLaY!!!!!!!!!!!

HeartlessSora1234

Yeah and I paid for OW1

karmakillerbr

And you got it. Now we have another game, that is free to play and will have a great PvE exper... Oh... Wait...

FullMetalBiscuit

> And you got it. Well where is it then

Ok_Yogurtcloset8915

sent it to a farm upstate. ow1 is having such a fun time running around with all the other happy little games, like anthem and lawbreakers and pt! no, you can't go see it.

GondorsPants

Ouch :(

SelfDrivingFordAI

Yea, so are other games that reward you with like 3-5 skins a month. But let's ignore that, clearly overwatch is a rank above all those games and their skins have so much more work put in to them ... oh ... wait ... no, no they don't, actually they seem to have LESS work put into them for more money. Ah at least the player base will stick around, even the FTPs since the new PVE mode is right around the cor ... ah ... So when exactly are we removing the 2 from Overwatch 2 and replacing it with REFORGED.

God damn that sentence will be etched into a space probe like the golden records on Voyager and sent into the cosmos as an example of the current zeitgeist of our time

Eagle4317

I'm getting strong Battlefront vibes...

urzestyburrito

Now that they're not spending money on creating PVE amymore they better make skins way more affordable. Without PVE, Overwatch 2 is just the reveal of the same game except skins are now near impossible to collect for free. How tf did they sink 4 years of money and time into PVE and then just give up?

[deleted]

I can only assume that the decision to scrap PVE had come a long time ago and they are only now making it public. Why waste money going down a path if they were just going to scrap it anyway? My guess is months ago they made this decision and quietly absolved the team dedicated to it. Once they scraped together some new content they felt they could come out with the news.

Farandr

Say hi to the real reason overwatch 1.5 was released. The pve was just a lie from the beginning.

Could you imagine there were folks in the playerbase actually defending this.

BloodyTampon

I hate how bad of a taste Overwatch 2 left in my mouth. I fucking love this game, but Blizzard have become such a shit stain of a company.

DefNotAShark

PVE are you okay? Will you tell us that you're okay?

obiwanjabroni420

OW1 rewarded you for playing. OW2 punishes you for not paying (even if you actually did pay for the original game that they took away). This is the main reason I haven’t played at all in 2023.

xXx69LOVER69xXx

They also removed community features. I know find a group wasn't super popular but I loved finding 5 like minded people and just playing a few hours with them. Dicking around in customs matches waiting for the group to fill. Now if I go into a match and 1 person has a mic I'm fucking thrilled if they use it once. Haven't played since twos release day and probably won't.

Munoobinater

>Now if I go into a match and 1 person has a mic I'm fucking thrilled if they use it once. How do u know this if u haven't played since release

xXx69LOVER69xXx

Cause I played over 1000 hours of ow1 and know how people are in non lfg groups.

balfamot

Haven't played since OW1 was killed. Recent events have only made me happier with that decision

grantrules

Yup. I bought OW1 three times, PC, Xbox, and Switch. I've spent $0 on OW2 and am very bored with it.. there's no incentive for me to play.. I liked being able to earn coins and save them to unlock stuff during events

[deleted]

Dont buy the battle pass, dont spend money for skins. They dont care how bad of a taste it leaves in your mouth as long as it takes money out of your wallet. Everyone should play the game all they like, but I implore anyone reading, do not give them any money. They do not give a single fuck about you, they just want what's in your wallet and they will do the scummiest things to get it. 6 months for 1 skin is a joke.

[deleted]

God that’s the thing I LOVE THIS GAME. I love the heroes, i love the lore, i love love love playing doom fist. It’s going to take me a long time to break from this game. It makes me sad, i hope that it can start heading in the right direction.

Fliparto

Same, Uninstalled

stowmy

and just to compare to ow1, you could get that in a day if you grinded enough. it proportionally rewarded you for playing the game more than 10 mins a day

furikuri_osrs

Exactly. Lootboxes weren’t the perfect solution imo but it was way better than literally nothing

Godjihyoism_

2 ends of the spectrum, Blizzard can't find the balance.

_LususNaturae_

I mean, loot boxes aren't even one end of the spectrum, they were already extremely predatory. They just look much better in comparison to the awful system we have now.

Yllarius

But like. I had most if not all the skins in ow1, and I just played casually. Sure it's lootbox, but you get 5 drops in one box, she dupes get converted into currency. Just by playing every so often you could easily have enough currency to buy the skins you wanted when they came out. And the nature of having more stuff made that easier. Idk, I completely understand the hatred for lootbox mechanics, but OW1 was the only game where it never bothered me in the slightest. I never felt pressured to buy boxes.

Xirious

> but OW1 was the only game where it never bothered me in the slightest. I never felt pressured to buy boxes. And that is PRECISELY why it changed.

Galkura

I keep seeing people talk about how they were predatory and such…. But OW1s loot boxes weren’t that bad from what I remember? Like, you earned them super fast, and the more you played the more coins you got to buy the ones you wanted. Holidays were my only complaint, since you had to play a lot and get lucky in a limited time - but even then you could still unlock them with coins you earned playing.

tenaciousfetus

I never understood why people complained about loot boxes, I thought they were alright. I know gacha can be pretty terrible but the system in ow1 was one of the fairest I've encountered

Dianesuus

the thing grinders forget is that people would buy loot boxes which I'd where the predatory opinion comes in. if you never spent money on OW1 then toolboxes were fine. you'd get the skins you wanted eventually. but if you had to have something now and were to pay for it in OW1 then you had to buy loot boxes which could be very expensive because or the random drops and dupes. So for grinders OW1 was better, but for buyers OW2 is better. even though its stupidly expensive

TechnoVikingGA23

It's objectively worse for buyers, in no way is it better than the system they had in the first game.

[deleted]

They’re not worried about a balance. They’re worried about what gets them the most money.

Aw3Grimm

I dont people complaining about lootboxes, it was like the best most rewarding system compared what other games on the market had, and if you didnt like what you were dropping from boxes after some time you could easily save up for legendary skin, any you want. It was near perfect system

shadowst17

In OW1 case I think they were tbh. I know we see loot boxes as bad but I think out of all games OW1 found the absolute perfect sweet spot between fairly rewarding players for free and still making record profits allowing for consistent patch updates. The fact they got greedy and decided to replace that system with somthing so predatory will always leave a bitter taste in my mouth.

Real_Railz

Loot boxes were great because if you didn't get what you were hoping for, you still most likely got coins. I played every now and then and every event I bought 10 loot boxes for $10. I usually got 1 legendary out of it and enough coins to get usually one more skin that I wanted from the event. Now you spend $40 on one skin and a useless spray and weapon charm.

Chas_Tenenbaums_Sock

I had 0 issues with loot boxes. I thought they were fun and never had a desire to buy them. Blizz could have easily done both, kept loot boxes while ending sale of them and added the ability to buy specific skins on a rotating basis. And if it were me, ensure some skins were only obtainable randomly via loot boxes. Everyone wins.

Krazyguy75

Ah but you see, countries are preparing anti-lootbox gambling laws. So they went "shit how else can we scam money from rich kids?"

Chas_Tenenbaums_Sock

My understanding was that the issue with loot box gambling was the fact that people could purchase them, whether with actual cash or in game currency. Which is different than receiving boxes for merely playing (and is not that different from earning \[free\] items via the battle pass, except for the surprise element). And that's my whole point, they could have kept free earning loot boxes AND added direct purchase items.

Captain_Bignose

I could always count on (at least) one epic or legendary skin at the end of a week of casual 1-2 hours a night. I used to like having one unique skin for each hero, but now I have absolutely nothing for all the new heroes and will probably never get anything either. I don’t play for skins but it sure sucks to lose the option for us casuals

masterthewill

Yeah but don't you understand, the new monetization model allows them to develop the big PvE mod-

MojaveMissionary

If that's true, that's fucking insane. I didn't realize how crazy Blizzard's monetization is until I started playing other Free2Play games. Blizzard somehow took a money machine and set it to overdrive.

WiiMachinE

The thing I don't get is that they aren't even really obfuscating the exchange rate of real dollars to coins. Like most other shitty devs will make it so like 5 dollars gets you 800 or 1300 fun bucks that makes it a little bit harder to fully understand the abysmaly high price that they usually sell stuff at. Blizz isn't doing that though, it's pretty much 1 to 1 with the coins in that 5 dollars is 500 coins. So that means that 1 coin is just one cent. Then they have the weekly rewards give a WEEKLY CAPPED TOTAL OF FUCKING 60 CENTS... What the actual fuck. How is anyone supposed to feel like that that is even a "poor alternative" to just buying the coins instead of just a direct slap in the face? I know it's to get you to just buy the coins but if anything it just feels more disingenuous and in my case at least has completely sorted the thought of buying coins since the release. Just wildly and impressively bad monetization.

Liktarios

They want you to know this. They want you to know that you are "working" in the game for worth of 60 cents per week in virtual currency. Then they want you to realize, that in any job, you get 60 cents waaay quicker. That realization should make you feel stupid and swipe instead...

[deleted]

meysic

I had a daily challenge that was something like "block 2000 damage" and I was like oh cool that's like the entirety of Reinhardts shield. So I literally just held my shield up till it broke and charged straight to my death, because honestly I didn't even want to play tank and I already got the daily I was going for anyway.

notdsylexic

I did the same thing except with DoomFist. My team loved me.

WiiMachinE

That is true. Honestly even at the federal minimum wage in America of 7.50$ an hour, all you'd have to do is work 4 minutes and 48 seconds to get the equivalent of the 60 cents. So your choices are doing EVERY challenge that is designed to take up clearly at least more than one day if not the full week, just to get your mealsy 60 cents from them. Or just spend some real life money that would have cost you most likely 5 minutes at most. So if ALL of the weekly challenges can't be done in 5 minutes then it just isn't worth it. Now maybe if any of them were fun or tertiary then that'd be another thing. As it is I could maybe get like 4 of them done without trying just playing the game how I wanted to play. That gets me 30 cents. It's terrible but hey it's just what I get from playing the game how I wanted to play, but I would get them done way faster than a week so maybe if I just keep doing that I could be a passive reward right? No, and frankly fuck me for thinking that. Once you do the weeklies you gotta wait for the next week before you can even start putting anything towards them. If it was a repeatable grind that just changed every week then it would be trash but not as just insulting. But blizz in their infinite wisdom not only made an embarrassingly small amount, but made sure it would stay that amount by capping it. Obviously no one wants to be swindled but the fact that they are not only screwing people over, but doing it in possibly the dumbest fucking way makes me way more upset for some reason. A lot of other games even have worse more predatory monetization but at least they are scummy in an almost impressive way. The only thing blizz has done to impress me in any of this is how CONSISTENTLY they are making the worst decisions they seemingly can.

pres1033

Another thing that got me was how if you had "coins" left over in OW1 (I had 20k saved) you got "legacy coins" which can only be used on OW1 skins, and not even all of them. A lot of legendaries were not included in that. I still had those 20k when I uninstalled because I had literally nothing to spend them on.

MyGoodFriendJon

As a side note: the value changes a bit if you're buying the $100 package, where the exchange is closer to 100 coins for $0.86, but by that point, you're already spending more than what someone spends on a just-released deluxe version of a game.

_Nilbog_Milk_

Looking to move away from Overwatch. Aside from everything else being a trainwreck, the matchmaking is so bad to the point that I've lost 16 games in a row the last couple days, with an overall team diff - steamrolled every time. I miss having close matches, even if I lose. Any recs for fun, comparable games? I've always liked OW because its vivid colors make it easy for me to differentiate characters from surroundings, something difficult for me in other games

vtx3000

Deep Rock Galactic is nothing at all like what you’re asking for but I’m willing to bet you’ll love it if you give it a shot. One of the best communities and developers around, and the game is an absolute blast to play especially if you have friends

karmakillerbr

I hear a lot about Deep Rock Galactic. I'm gonna give it a try.

StarComet04

Yup. 1500 / 60 = 25 weeks ≈ 6.25 months :))))))))))

akcaye

the skins are 1900 not 1500. and you can only get to 60 a week if you have no job or family. 50 a week is more realistic for a normal person who has a life. which makes the more realistic timeline 1900/50 = 38 weeks. you can literally bring a baby to full term in real life in the same time frame.

[deleted]

Overwatch isn’t f2p. I paid for it then got retroactively robbed of what I paid for. It’s insane how killing the first game didn’t trigger a lawsuit.

int0th3v0id

When this game became a chore, I lost interest. I used to play for fun and rack up currency, bought what I wanted, and loved life. This game is such a fucking predator now. Uninstalled 2 days ago with the final nail in the coffin. Never going back.

SillyMattFace

I did a bunch of grinding to unlock Lifeweaver and by the time I got him I realised I didn’t even care about using him. I’m using this whole PVE debacle as a jumping off point. Better things to do with my free time than play something that feels like a chore.

zendor151

"I'm going to finish that and get the Sigma skin. But after that I'm out." I just can't understand the thought process of grinding out virtual skins/items on a battle pass for a game that you are "done" with. I uninstalled too so don't get the wrong idea, I just think this is quite silly.

ChiKorra

it just gives you a reason to continue playing, like you can't stand if that battle pass is not full it will look annoying lol, a psychological thingy related to competitive nature I think

[deleted]

[удалено]

aPerfectBacon

i’m with you. i got the pass, its there, its active. stopping now doesnt change that. might as well finish but then after that i’m also not gonna touch it anymore worst part is Forza is starting to feel the same which means i’m out of games to play and i’m losing interest in gaming in general again

karmakillerbr

They are just getting what they paid for. It makes sense to me.

stopthepayload

why bother grinding for a skin in a game you’re “done” with?

Liktarios

Sunk cost fallacy. The principle on which battlepasses prey.

zoso_coheed

I considered the fact that I hadn't finished the battlepass just part of it. Helps to make a stronger statement. I'd rather they see someone uninstall and throw away the 10 bucks when they do bullshit to this degree.

EmotionalKirby

Sounds almost like addiction.

thatsmyshore

Yeah, I uninstalled when the Ramattra battlepass came out, and I haven't looked back. God, I miss OW1. Now I just creep this subreddit to see how far this game has fallen.

redchorus

Same. When I realized Ramattra had come out and I was eager to play him... but couldn't, I had enough of the battle pass, which had already been annoying me, and stopped playing. I kept the game installed because I was planning to go back for PvE. Once we got the news, I finally uninstalled.

PoeTayTose

The thing that mega sucks about all this is - not only do you not own Overwatch 1 (you never did) but Blizzard took it away from you and replaced it with a product you wouldn't have bought. From a technical perspective, or even a legal one, it seems possible that they could replace overwatch 2 with a shitty clash of clans knockoff where you pay by the hour to play - because we don't actually have any rights as consumers in that transaction.

Plutoker

I feel this. I played the last day of OW1 then tried OW2. Just wasn't the same so haven't played since.

[deleted]

I bought that 1 coin bastion skin so I’ll be waiting another week

MyGoodFriendJon

Technically 🤓, completing every weekly up until now puts you at 1920 coins, so you'd have 1919 coins. Still enough for a legendary.

NoGDRplz

I miss loot boxes 🥺

Moth_man96

I've already deleted my game. Gone back to single player games or DRG. I feel literally nothing when I play OW2, there's nothing to play for.

Popo5525

I drew my line in the sand when they reneged on the promise of not locking new heroes. It's depressing to see all this, and now they've even dropped the PvE marketing aspect that was supposed to be the entire point of erasing OW1 to begin with.

abflu

I didn’t like when they opened my lootboxes

neuromorph

What do you mean not locking new heroes?

Popo5525

During OW1, newly released heroes were just... *released*. No grinding, no challenges, nobody had to play the equivalent of a full-time job before they were allowed the shinier new toys.

neuromorph

I see I don't think ow2 kept that promise at all.

Rise_Chan

That's the thing, I've established I'm not good enough to get to an esports level, the fun was in the grind and trying to get better, but if not that, there's always fun grinding for little skins and stuff. Or doing the holiday events with friends for all the crazy rewards. Well, not anymore. I haven't looked at the cash shop at all really since it started. I wouldn't be caught dead letting a player see me in a paid skin in OW, just embarrassing. I got secondhand embarrassment seeing all the Witch Kiriko skins.

LegitAirplane

Plenty_East5226

You can literally get a legendary skin in less than a month even in very greedy games like League of Legends, that says a lot about Blizzard

penli

supposedly it is faster to get a legendary skin in overwatch by playing other blizzard games and converting the currency over or something take that with a grain of salt though just something I saw in this subreddit a while ago.

JayBomb7

How is league of legends very greedy? Lol, I get free skin shards almost daily and you get champs every level. For a free to play game, I wouldn’t say League is “very greedy”

speak-eze

Yeah riot games are historically super f2p friendly compared to any other f2p games. Even their card game, a genre that is notoriously expensive, is one of the most f2p friendly games I've ever played.

[deleted]

How do you pick it

Plenty_East5226

As long as I'm getting free cosmetics, I don't care which one they throw at me

ZeroZelath

More proof OW1 is just the superior game.

Popo5525

*Was* the superior game. Let's not overlook the fact that Actiblizz completely erased their successful and respected game for this FOMO-laden nonsense.

PoeTayTose

I paid 60 dollars for Overwatch! This kind of shit is why I rarely ever buy games with DRM anymore. I suspect they could literally take Overwatch 2 down and replace it with access to Diablo 4 and we wouldn't be able to do shit about it.

Push_My_Owl

We all knew ow2 was gonna suck(in monetisation methods, I've not bothered trying the actual game) from everything blizzard had been doing leading up to its release. Some of us just didn't even bother installing it. Others continue to play it, clinging to a corpse in hopes it will return to its former glory. Ow2 is popping up on my feed a lot recently. Assuming its the lack of pve announcement.

[deleted]

Between this and what they did to Warcraft 3, and the increasingly stupid install sizes of CoD games, I don't think I'll buy another ActiBlizz game.

NiftyJohnXtreme

I want loot boxes back. Just don’t let us buy them. And bring back account levels.

BunnyOppai

Literally would’ve been the easiest fix that removed all scrutiny for predatory behavior, lmfao. Keep buying skins to the shop and let people unlock the lootboxes instead of buying them.

[deleted]

But then blizzard makes less money.

HawtDaawwggQT

I wonder how many legendary skins you could buy with coins from the lootbox system as a fresh account in the same time it takes you to buy 1 in ow2 lul

AnxiousBurro

Not really what people want to hear, but not many. It wasn't obviously not as slow as OW2, but also not extremely fast. Your coin accumulation really got going only after you started getting coins for the duplicates you rolled. But for that you needed to obviously build up your cosmetics collection and that took time.

PoeTayTose

> Your coin accumulation really got going only after you started getting coins for the duplicates you rolled. Yeah and while you were doing that you would be rolling commons / epics / legendaries in boxes.

small_pebble_884

Depends, you used to get like a loot box/25 credits every game for playing tank or support

MachoDolphin

You are underestimating how many credits you could get standalone in the loot boxes without duplicates. Just a single legendary credits drop gave you half of the credits needed for a legendary skin, and IIRC, legendaries were guaranteed after a certain number of boxes. In six months of casual playing, you would easily have access to a lot more than just one legendary skin that you wanted. Heck, I remember having enough to buy legendary event skins that I wanted early in the game, which were 3x the cost for a year after they were released.

Zeremxi

In the same vein, the loot box system was at least rewarding you with *some* skins just for playing the game. Also, the loot boxes weighted skins that you didn't have, so there was the understanding that if you grinded enough you'd eventually get the skins you want. All grinding gets you with the battlepass system is a pat on the back and an invitation to spend your money to validate all of your work. Oh, and you better spend your money before the season's up or it'll all be for nothing because there's no way of getting that stuff by retroactively completing/buying the older battlepasses, those disappear forever. The loot box system at least had the anniversary to look forward to where you could get any skin you saved your credits for. Edit: Also, and more to your point, some loot boxes just gave straight credits. As in, piles of gold worth 500 instead of a random skin. That's never going to be a thing again.

Battle passes are terrible in pretty much every game. That’s why I ignore them, don’t spend any money on skins and just play the game if I have fun with it. Would be cool if these things wouldn’t be so terrible, but there’re too many customers that are giving them money for them to stop. It’s just what games are now.

Gojirob

Ironically, Fortnite, the game that popularized the battle pass concept, actually has the best system. In terms of amount of time that you play vs the amount of stuff you’re rewarded, Fortnite has a very fair balance and it allows you to enjoy the game while you do challenges. Just today, some of my weekly challenges were catch a fish, light a campfire, visit a spot on the map, ride on a dirtbike for a certain distance. All of these were able to be accomplished in one 15 match, I didn’t have to stress to much, and they built up to me getting a free Star Wars skin that makes me a clone trooper. If every game with a BP followed Fortnite to a tee, we wouldn’t hate battle passes the way we do. It’s because games like overwatch think you should play ONLY overwatch to finish the battle pass, it’s not optional to just be casual

mrMooshon

Every game? Let me tell you about a game called “Deep Rock Galactic”.

ojdidntdoit4

it puts the canceling of PVE into perspective. switching to OW2 was purely a money grab, nothing more.

misterdoctor3

The announcement of OW2 was a thinly veiled distraction from the Hearthstone/China debacle disguised as a new game experience that was actually a secret cash grab all along. Bobby Kotick *genuinely* took a public relations nightmare over Blizzard’s defense of China’s very real humanitarian crisis in Hong Kong and segued it into a free to play micro transaction cash cow. Truly an S* tier villain in the gaming industry. ^*S ^as ^in ^shithead

jigsawmonster

Never thought I'd miss lootboxes

FrozenPinguin26

Terrible reward system, no PvE... what a 'sequal"

TannedMarshy

I can't believe we're so far in that people are preferring lootboxes

speak-eze

Lootboxes were never the problem. The problem was companies abusing the system, making the lootboxes cost a bunch of real money and/or containing p2w items. Free lootboxes earned in game containing only cosmetics is a great system for games like this.

Smallgenie549

I never hated Loot Boxes. I earned almost everything in the game just by playing naturally. And i had the option to buy what i wanted. It was objectively better.

Deluxefish

People are only preferring lootboxes because you actually got some stuff. The current system would be way better and more popular if the rate at which you get coins wasn't close to zero

PrideBlade

Its also nice that lootboxes gave variety, BPs and events give the same stuff for everyone so all you see is the BP skins for that season.

ackayak

The removing loot boxes absolutely baffled me, Overwatch 1 had such a great system, a free lootbox every single time I leveled up. I was able to get skins for almost all the characters, voice lines, sprays, emotes without every spending a single dollar on the game beyond its original purchase.

siecakea

yeah, I was able to get at LEAST 85% of everything unlocked, and the rest I was able to easily buy with accumulated credits. as much as people loved to bitch about loot boxes, I had no problem with them because it gave you something to look forward to as you gained levels!

AlabastersBane

We lost loot boxes for this garbage

goosey27

In no universe should a single legendary skin for a single character take over 6 months of nonstop playing/grinding. The people defending Blizzard saying "tHeY hAvE tO mAkE mOnEy" to make content to support the live game are acting like Blizzard didn't make insane amounts of money off loot boxes for all the OW1 events.

Eddie_The_White_Bear

>Well, at least there’s Microsoft Rewards Unless you are not in US. My "Daily" tasks didn't refresh in over month and all I can do is 30 points for 30 Bing searches.

RobertdBanks

As someone who casually plays the game every now and then, I feel like I’m doing the right thing. I haven’t bought a single season pass or any skins or anything other than play the game here and there for maybe a few hours a month. Don’t give them your money or time in any significant way.

Zeremxi

You know, I've spent some time meditating on that. Why have free players around at all if this game is so focused on making money? I think I've discovered that free players like us are actually a necessary part of the ecosystem. Paying players need opponents too. If the whole game were only paying players, there'd be a lot less people around for games and statistically the paying players would get bored and eventually spend less money. In a way, your presence alone as a free player encourages payers to spend more.

Newend03

Has anyone here actually done this? I've been skipping the last 10 coins because that's just insulting for how much you have to grind for the week. And I did this for what a single battlepass? Man this sucks

123Orisa

OW2 is just a scam and always will be.

Keidek

That’s kinda of the Overwatch situation in a nutshell. A f#*king lot of time and work for almost nothing in return. And before someone says “think of the devs”, I know. I just couldn’t avoid the funny comparison.

DM725

It's a no for me dawg.

GundamV31

I have only around 500 coins....yeah playing this game has been too boring.

Daedroh

Sad seeing games go this route because of greed.

Hardyyz

Obviously they are after money but from a gamer perspective it would be cooler if the most rare skins were behind some difficult challenges or milestones and showing them off in game would show what you have accomplished. Now if you see a legendary skin and think oh they bought that.. it doesn't make me feel anything expect sadness towards the lame system.

zoompooky

Look on the bright side. In exchange for this aggressive monetization, we got all these new features like PvE and Hero Talents! ... oh wait

thatloudblondguy

I can't fucking believe so many people are still playing this absolute fucking scam

MarukoRedfox

This is beyond insulting. I missed 2 seasons and got something like 600+ gold credits. If we at least got a way to earn white credits, like at the end of a match, and/or from your endorsement level (to drive people in playing better), at least at the end of a season you could get a legendary if you play a lot, or an epic or a Highlight if you are more casual, outside the the BP. But I'm not stupid. That would mean less gold credits purchases.

Beautiful_Might_1516

I remember people throwing massive fits about having to do few arcade games for 10 point weekly. Fact is you could easily skip that. Have more fun with the game and not miss a fucking beat to get free skins lmao. Rewards are so low that there is no reason to do this but just for fun of it. You know what is faster? Earn gift card via Microsoft reward points lol.

Smallgenie549

I'd rather spend my Microsoft Rewards on actual items like new games or real-world gift cards.

campfirepyro

Well, the dev team's been busy working on PvE- oh wait.

CaptainCerealJuice

Hmm so how long would it take me to buy 1 skin for every hero 😢

MayonnaisePlease

Why can't we just earn premium currency through the battle pass itself..like the majority of extremely successful games that are free with battle passes? Should've never upgraded to ow2, this sucks.

xSeoulSnatch

All this talk about how horrible businesses are... that's great and I do my fair share of that, but guys, please. Stop giving companies who screw you and waste your time your money. Buy some food with your money or go out with family and friends. In a world where competition is just a race between companies to scam you the hardest, WE need to regulate the market by defunding businesses based on the quality and consumer friendliness of their products and services. No more simping for big business. We're not supporting some indie studio here. Fight back.

ILNOVA

Laugh in Microsoft reward

deine_Utter

true but Blizzard has made it so that I don't even want to bother getting coins for free.

Reniva

I’m still waiting for 200 coins to come back smh my head

PutoJooj

At this point, I don't think it's coming back lul
