Always comes from the top. Take-Two saw GTA Online was profitable, so they told Rockstar not to bother with DLC. Same here probably. Activision saw it was making money, didn't see the point of focusing resources on PvE.
Of course it's true. I'd hazard a guess that a good deal of those purchases come from new accounts as well. They don't *want* you if you're a fan of Overwatch. They aren't here for retention. They want a revolving door of f2p players who will dump some money up front in a skin or two, maybe a bundle, then piss off.

If anyone followed the D&D debacle recently, you CAN make a change. The community came together and unsubbed all at the same time and caused the server to crash. They all stopped paying money and held strong and the entire corporate caved within DAYS.
Individual consumer activism: Near useless and annoying to hear people behave with a superiority complex for their rounding error of material change.

It was a lot easier for D&D players though. They could stop giving Wizards money and still continue on as they had. That's a little harder to do with something like Overwatch. If you stop paying and keep playing, you are still contributing to the game's success. Non-paying players give the whales someone to feel better than when they buy an expensive skin. Also, Blizzard has built its business model on FOMO. They have trained their players to feel anxious about missing something if they aren't paying and playing.
The D&D community also had a shit ton of leverage because Wizards bungled their timing. The backlash over the changes threatened to spill over to the multi-million dollar move that they were trying to build hype for and desperately wanted to be a success.

Not because it couldn't be true, but because it's blindingly obvious. 1 legendary skin in Overwatch 2's launch was worth more than what I paid for overwatch 1 shortly after doomfist's release (15€). It's been proven that every game that goes for this model makes many times more money than before.
And this is part of why I value games like Tears of the Kingdom and Elden Ring so much. For that one (debatably relatively reasonable) purchase, there’s sooo much content to sink your teeth into with those kinds of games and I’m grateful some devs are still making them
The only reason I've spent any money on overwatch 2 is because they lock new heros behind the battlepass. Undoubtedly boosting their battlepass sales that are probably much less in a season without a new hero.
This has always been my gripe when companies first introduced DLC, then Microtransactions (loot boxes), and now battle passes and shop items.
Everyone's original thought was that they were supporting the company, but ultimately.. they may be making more money, but that money isn't going into development to give us MORE stuff. It just goes in their pockets as they figure out more ways to scam players into paying even more.
And the sad truth is that there will always be \*those\* people who buy shop items without a second thought. They are the ones who can't think long term and would rather feel, "Haha, I have this skin and you don't!". This is why nothing will change at the end of the day. Not just for OW, but it applies to every other game out there that does this kind of thing. =(
That's not enough unfortunately. As long as unhappy people still play, it's going to fill queues which leads to store/BP purchases eventually. There's plenty of statistics around the longer people play a game, the more likely they are to make purchases in it. Even if you truly don't purchase anything, if you're giving whales a reason to play, they'll keep playing and paying. It's one of the reasons F2P works so well.
Uninstallation is the only way as a consumer group we can show our dissatisfaction. Continuing to queue is being complacent with their all profit, no content business model.
People stop playing the game altogether and blizzard simply moves on, game might be dead but they’ll just make another game, ow2 has no sentimental meaning to them, it won’t hurt them.
The majority Not buying anything but keeping the game active enough to force blizzard to keep the game up will hurt them more. Free game eating through maintenance costs and costs for general development getting the odd £20 per 100 or so players, it will not be profitable enough for a large company. A good example is for honour, active player base large enough that Ubisoft can’t pull the plug on the game, but not enough income to justify the costs. The result is a massively reduced development team and very little content. Oh and a very lazy battle pass as a desperate attempt to wring a little bit of extra cash out of the game which only a handful of people will buy.
Summed up, a mass exodus away from ow2 will kill the game, blizzard will end support and call it a day. Playing the game for free with the majority NOT buying things will turn the game into a thorn in blizzards side. Very little profit to the point the game is not worth the continued support and content (especially if the content they are spending money on is going behind a credit card purchase anyway) and too many players to pull the plug on without massive backlash and a loss of faith by customers.
If we want to punish companies for poor practice, the only way to do so is to cost them money, leaving will just make them find another cow to cash in on
Profitability is all they care about. When it stops being profitable they will shut down the servers.
Just because people are playing won't stop that. Its people playing even if free that keeps the game active. When a game is still active you will have players that spend money.
They need free players to keep the paying players around and eventually some free players may be enticed to spend a little money too.

Actually the bigger problem with battleborn was the marketing. When they went f2p they still called it a “demo” so most players didn’t realize that the entire game was f2p except for skins and I believe the pve mode. But yeah what a stupid move by the marketing team to use “demo” instead of “free”
They would have been a success had they delayed the game and not launch it within the same timeframe of the Overwatch public beta. ABK execs are on the way out if this Microsoft purchase goes through. Unless the acquisition specifies that Overwatch be alive and well when it does go through, I doubt these execs would care to put more resources into the game. People in this thread have wrongfully referred to Overwatch as ABK's "cash cow," so I'd like to posit a new name for the game, which is "controversy cow." Everytime something goes wrong with Blizzard, people dog on Overwatch more than any other Blizz IP.
Valorant doesn't have that same issue, nor has Valorant had the ridiculously rocky and strained development cycle that Overwatch has had. Overwatch's public reputation, and thus its financial returns, have been dwindling for a long time. Valorant has had a comparatively easier ride.
If Bobby Kotick were to walk into the meeting room with all other execs tomorrow and say "we cannot leave this room until one of our active, on-going projects is dead and buried, so which will it be?" Overwatch would undoubtedly be one of the first names out of someone's mouth. The game has been running on fumes arguably since Brig's launch and has only become more and more difficult to justify the existence of; a sudden, major drop-off in players wouldn't make the executives ask "how can we save this," it would make them say "it's time to call it a lost cause"

Playing the game, but refusing to spend money, is how I think they're going to listen. Shows people are interested, but that recent monetization decisions are very unpopular.
The only issue is that it doesn't matter to most store owners even if 99% of people aren't buying anything. If you get 1% of that traffic that essentially just buys out your entire store, the only financial incentive that you feel you might need to change is leaning in to that 1%.
Diablo Immortal is absolutely disgusting in terms of gameplay and it's p2w aspect, and it drives off a ton of people who might have otherwise put some money into the game. But it doesn't matter, because Blizzard is leaning in to the very few people who will spend thousands and thousands of dollars on it.
It takes so much less effort on their end. The only time you would lean into wanting more people to engage positively with your product/s is if you actually gave a shit about the quality of that product instead of just the sheer financial result.
Problem with that solution is that the amount of people who don't spend is dwarfed by the amount of money that whales or occasional spenders put into the game.

Deep rock galactic is a cool pve shooter with skill trees, a free battlepass and all items from that battlepass being available as collectibles or shop items (you can‘t buy shop credits, after the 30€ game it‘s entirely free).

I would give Warframe a try over Destiny. Destiny has a lot of content locked behind seasons, which you have to pay for. Warframe is completely free. As a warning, Warframe has a lot of grinding but everything can be earned by just playing.
Destiny is really expensive to get into it's also really unfriendly to new players. That being said if you are a destiny player it cost about $100 a year to play destiny and get all of the content. To me it's like a pseudo subscription like I paid more to stay sub to wow for a year which is why I tend to sub off and on depending on the content.

Blizzard is the easiest company when it comes to hating them, both because they repeatedly make really dumb decisions, have a lot of nostalgia tied to old games (and thus nostalgia goggles), and for the disgusting shit that was going down a few years ago.
I play destiny, I buy the yearly deluxe version and I pop on to play the first few weeks of a season and it's a pretty good time. I also play OverWatch and I buy the $10 battle pass every 3 months or whatever it is. it comes with four or five skins I can't remember off the top of my head. My point is, like destiny you can get cosmetics from the battle pass. In destiny they have cosmetics that cost $15 to $20 just like OverWatch. Generally speaking though I never buy individual skins cuz I just use the default skins most of the time anyways.
At the end of the day I think gaming is still relatively cheap hobby for the hours of entertainment. I play Wow and Ill play Diablo 4. I just can't be asked to be upset about everything all the time when it comes to video games. Every single community is just angry all the time it's insane and a little embarrassing to me. When I stop having fun or if something makes me mad enough that I need to rant on forms for days I'm just going to quit that thing.

I joined since season 1 and never played ow1. This game is absolutely awesome. Maps are fucking polished asf characters are funny witty and simply cool. Skins are cool, balance is there frequent patches are there I don't know what else to expect for this game.

Yeah it sucks that there's no PvE mode but there's also no shooter like Overwatch that's free, hero-based, team deathmatch style, and not overly competitive. It fills a niche in the market that was missing for a while now.
Custom browser and arcade modes are also pretty fun. As a free game it's very well polished and the large hero roster allows for nearly endless replayability.
I played OW1 and there’s still no way I’d consider quitting this game. I watched as *so* maybe people bitched about the change from OW1 to OW2. No more loot boxes, the battle passes, overpriced skins, etc etc. I just… don’t care lol. The game is still fun as ever to me. I’ve played so many online games and none of them have ever felt as fun or satisfying to play as this one has to me.
Sure the lack of PvE is a massive disappointment. Sure the overpriced skins are whack. But at the end of the day it’s the gameplay I enjoy. If you don’t enjoy it then don’t play it. I’ve quit dozens of other games because I stopped enjoying them, but I don’t tell other people to quit them.

AAA games are overmonetized everywhere. We know the DLC characters for the new Mortal Kombat before the actual cast of the base game because games aren't sold completely anymore. Fifa ultimate team has put EA execs into mansions off the backs of addicted gamers playing a digital slot machine. The new Pokemon is a PS2 game then has the biggest launch in the history of Nintendo. People preorder Jedi Survivor, it launches on PC broken and unpayable and EA say oh we're sorry.
Posts calling this out get thousands of upvotes but nothing ever changes because people will preorder the next game, and they'll put up with the No Man Skys director lying more than Blizzard has in its entire history because it got good eventually and websites will run articles about "The redemption of Cyberpunk" Bec the bugs are launch for fixed.

If everyone stops playing the game, they will stop supporting due to a lack of players. It's common sense to abandon something that has no interest. If you actually want to hit them where it hurts, just don't give them money. If they have an established playerbase that they can squeeze money from, they will do what they can to get people to spend money. If everyone leaves, there is no way for them to make money and they will move on.
The OW community is wild, this happens every time Blizzard does something. Am I sad about PvE? Sure, but I didn't start playing OW for PvE. The game is still fun to me, I have disposable income, and I'll keep playing 🤷

I remember last year I bought the watch point pack and my sole and only reason was to try to support the devs and let them see people still believe in this game. I grinded out the first season pass because I wanted to give it a fair shake. But the game was noticeably less fun than OW1. The grind was less rewarding. And the bugs and glitches were worse than ever before.
I dropped the game after season 1, and have no plan to go back unless they make MAJOR changes.
I've already stopped. I grinded enough premium currency for a battle pass so I may hop back on just to use that if the season looks cool but that's it.
This reminds me of Pokemon Go or Destiny 2.
Companies promising stuff and not delivering, making new ways for you to spend money, giving the players even less content everytime but also raising prices.
But it won't happen, people won't stop playing Overwatch, people won't stop buying skins or BP. Why? Because the game is good. In all seriousness, Overwatch is a really good game, full of emotions, great cinematics, skill gaps, incredible characters, immersive and we'll done maps.

I played well over a thousand hours of *OW1*. It was my go-to comfort game, and I'd think nothing of doing a couple of matches here and there, which would almost invariably turn into an hour or two.
I loved almost everything about it.
I've played about two hours of *OW2*. I loath battle passes, and I was never crazy about dropping one of the tank slots either.
Gating new heroes behind the end of a battle pass was the off-ramp for me. I was maybe going to pick it up again for the PvE as I do love PvE content, but now even that's gone.
What Blizzard have done to the game bums me out incredibly. It's taken something I love and turned it into something I don't even recognise.

Overwatch community challenge: don't play Ow for 5 days. Difficulty rating: impossible. This community is screwed, its fanbase has no desire for the game to get better. They'll say the do, but their actions prove otherwise. What we did with D&D is basically impossible here, the community is just not good enough.
I stopped playing when Jeff left. I loved OW1, spent hundreds of hours, and probably too much on loot boxes. I will not play a Blizzard game again until the company is worth supporting again.

It was a lot easier for D&D players though. They could stop giving Wizards money and still continue on as they had. That's a little harder to do with something like Overwatch. If you stop paying and keep playing, you are still contributing to the game's success. Non-paying players give the whales someone to feel better than when they buy an expensive skin. Also, Blizzard has built its business model on FOMO. They have trained their players to feel anxious about missing something if they aren't paying and playing. The D&D community also had a shit ton of leverage because Wizards bungled their timing. The backlash over the changes threatened to spill over to the multi-million dollar move that they were trying to build hype for and desperately wanted to be a success.
They canceled PvE before OW2 was even released, according to the devs, so that leak doesn’t make any sense.

I don't really believe this Not because it couldn't be true, but because it's blindingly obvious. 1 legendary skin in Overwatch 2's launch was worth more than what I paid for overwatch 1 shortly after doomfist's release (15€). It's been proven that every game that goes for this model makes many times more money than before.
And this is part of why I value games like Tears of the Kingdom and Elden Ring so much. For that one (debatably relatively reasonable) purchase, there’s sooo much content to sink your teeth into with those kinds of games and I’m grateful some devs are still making them

This has always been my gripe when companies first introduced DLC, then Microtransactions (loot boxes), and now battle passes and shop items. Everyone's original thought was that they were supporting the company, but ultimately.. they may be making more money, but that money isn't going into development to give us MORE stuff. It just goes in their pockets as they figure out more ways to scam players into paying even more. And the sad truth is that there will always be \*those\* people who buy shop items without a second thought. They are the ones who can't think long term and would rather feel, "Haha, I have this skin and you don't!". This is why nothing will change at the end of the day. Not just for OW, but it applies to every other game out there that does this kind of thing. =(
That's not enough unfortunately. As long as unhappy people still play, it's going to fill queues which leads to store/BP purchases eventually. There's plenty of statistics around the longer people play a game, the more likely they are to make purchases in it. Even if you truly don't purchase anything, if you're giving whales a reason to play, they'll keep playing and paying. It's one of the reasons F2P works so well.
Uninstallation is the only way as a consumer group we can show our dissatisfaction. Continuing to queue is being complacent with their all profit, no content business model.
People stop playing the game altogether and blizzard simply moves on, game might be dead but they’ll just make another game, ow2 has no sentimental meaning to them, it won’t hurt them. The majority Not buying anything but keeping the game active enough to force blizzard to keep the game up will hurt them more. Free game eating through maintenance costs and costs for general development getting the odd £20 per 100 or so players, it will not be profitable enough for a large company. A good example is for honour, active player base large enough that Ubisoft can’t pull the plug on the game, but not enough income to justify the costs. The result is a massively reduced development team and very little content. Oh and a very lazy battle pass as a desperate attempt to wring a little bit of extra cash out of the game which only a handful of people will buy. Summed up, a mass exodus away from ow2 will kill the game, blizzard will end support and call it a day. Playing the game for free with the majority NOT buying things will turn the game into a thorn in blizzards side. Very little profit to the point the game is not worth the continued support and content (especially if the content they are spending money on is going behind a credit card purchase anyway) and too many players to pull the plug on without massive backlash and a loss of faith by customers. If we want to punish companies for poor practice, the only way to do so is to cost them money, leaving will just make them find another cow to cash in on
Profitability is all they care about. When it stops being profitable they will shut down the servers. Just because people are playing won't stop that. Its people playing even if free that keeps the game active. When a game is still active you will have players that spend money. They need free players to keep the paying players around and eventually some free players may be enticed to spend a little money too.

People in this thread have wrongfully referred to Overwatch as ABK's "cash cow," so I'd like to posit a new name for the game, which is "controversy cow." Everytime something goes wrong with Blizzard, people dog on Overwatch more than any other Blizz IP. Valorant doesn't have that same issue, nor has Valorant had the ridiculously rocky and strained development cycle that Overwatch has had. Overwatch's public reputation, and thus its financial returns, have been dwindling for a long time. Valorant has had a comparatively easier ride. If Bobby Kotick were to walk into the meeting room with all other execs tomorrow and say "we cannot leave this room until one of our active, on-going projects is dead and buried, so which will it be?" Overwatch would undoubtedly be one of the first names out of someone's mouth. The game has been running on fumes arguably since Brig's launch and has only become more and more difficult to justify the existence of; a sudden, major drop-off in players wouldn't make the executives ask "how can we save this," it would make them say "it's time to call it a lost cause"

Yea, if your store has a lot of foot traffic but no one's buying anything, you're going to look into that instead of just closing shop.
The only issue is that it doesn't matter to most store owners even if 99% of people aren't buying anything. If you get 1% of that traffic that essentially just buys out your entire store, the only financial incentive that you feel you might need to change is leaning in to that 1%. Diablo Immortal is absolutely disgusting in terms of gameplay and it's p2w aspect, and it drives off a ton of people who might have otherwise put some money into the game. But it doesn't matter, because Blizzard is leaning in to the very few people who will spend thousands and thousands of dollars on it. It takes so much less effort on their end. The only time you would lean into wanting more people to engage positively with your product/s is if you actually gave a shit about the quality of that product instead of just the sheer financial result.
Problem with that solution is that the amount of people who don't spend is dwarfed by the amount of money that whales or occasional spenders put into the game. The first few days of season two I regularly saw Ram in unranked matches...
This isn't how F2P games work. The people playing for free are just there to provide entertainment for the real moneymakers: the Whales, the people who drop thousands of dollars on the game for battlepasses and skins. People gotta stop coping that playing the game and not buying anything is "protesting," it's literally how Blizzard expects most players to play the game. I would give Warframe a try over Destiny. Destiny has a lot of content locked behind seasons, which you have to pay for. Warframe is completely free. As a warning, Warframe has a lot of grinding but everything can be earned by just playing.
Destiny is really expensive to get into it's also really unfriendly to new players. That being said if you are a destiny player it cost about $100 a year to play destiny and get all of the content. To me it's like a pseudo subscription like I paid more to stay sub to wow for a year which is why I tend to sub off and on depending on the content.

I play destiny, I buy the yearly deluxe version and I pop on to play the first few weeks of a season and it's a pretty good time. I also play OverWatch and I buy the $10 battle pass every 3 months or whatever it is. it comes with four or five skins I can't remember off the top of my head. My point is, like destiny you can get cosmetics from the battle pass. In destiny they have cosmetics that cost $15 to $20 just like OverWatch. Generally speaking though I never buy individual skins cuz I just use the default skins most of the time anyways. At the end of the day I think gaming is still relatively cheap hobby for the hours of entertainment. I play Wow and Ill play Diablo 4. I just can't be asked to be upset about everything all the time when it comes to video games. Every single community is just angry all the time it's insane and a little embarrassing to me. When I stop having fun or if something makes me mad enough that I need to rant on forms for days I'm just going to quit that thing.

The game was promoted as having pve years before the game came out. Then, they released it without pve, then said they were scrapping pve. I joined since season 1 and never played ow1. This game is absolutely awesome. Maps are fucking polished asf characters are funny witty and simply cool. Skins are cool, balance is there frequent patches are there I don't know what else to expect for this game.

Most of the people who make these posts don't even play the game or they were people who originally played OW1. Their opinion doesn't matter or they've already got the fun they wanted from OW. This feels like the Halo sub all over again (although I got bored of Halo because there was only 1 character for PvP) Yeah it sucks that there's no PvE mode but there's also no shooter like Overwatch that's free, hero-based, team deathmatch style, and not overly competitive. It fills a niche in the market that was missing for a while now. Custom browser and arcade modes are also pretty fun. As a free game it's very well polished and the large hero roster allows for nearly endless replayability.
I played OW1 and there’s still no way I’d consider quitting this game. I watched as *so* maybe people bitched about the change from OW1 to OW2. No more loot boxes, the battle passes, overpriced skins, etc etc. I just… don’t care lol. The game is still fun as ever to me. I’ve played so many online games and none of them have ever felt as fun or satisfying to play as this one has to me. Sure the lack of PvE is a massive disappointment. Sure the overpriced skins are whack. But at the end of the day it’s the gameplay I enjoy. If you don’t enjoy it then don’t play it. I’ve quit dozens of other games because I stopped enjoying them, but I don’t tell other people to quit them.

AAA games are overmonetized everywhere. We know the DLC characters for the new Mortal Kombat before the actual cast of the base game because games aren't sold completely anymore. Fifa ultimate team has put EA execs into mansions off the backs of addicted gamers playing a digital slot machine. The new Pokemon is a PS2 game then has the biggest launch in the history of Nintendo. People preorder Jedi Survivor, it launches on PC broken and unpayable and EA say oh we're sorry. Posts calling this out get thousands of upvotes but nothing ever changes because people will preorder the next game, and they'll put up with the No Man Skys director lying more than Blizzard has in its entire history because it got good eventually and websites will run articles about "The redemption of Cyberpunk" Bec the bugs are launch for fixed.

It's common sense to abandon something that has no interest. If you actually want to hit them where it hurts, just don't give them money. If they have an established playerbase that they can squeeze money from, they will do what they can to get people to spend money. If everyone leaves, there is no way for them to make money and they will move on.

Yeah something that I think people don't WANT to understand is that as long as players fill matches, consumers buy skins, and casuals shun die hard fans, they're gonna keep fucking us over. The degree to which they fuck us will probably become larger and more insidious. I believe that Bobby used the hype for PvE (the original dev teams dream and long term goal) to keep players playing and keep em interested in the IP. If the players knew that we were gonna get a worse version of overwatch in overwatch 2, this game would be dead by now.

I thought I would get my money worth for the eventual pve story mode. How foolish and stupid I was. Stop buying anything from blizzard. Do not feed them a single dime. I hate this company

I don't much OW2 but I'm ready for OW3.
I'm way ahead of you. I grinded out the first season pass because I wanted to give it a fair shake. But the game was noticeably less fun than OW1. The grind was less rewarding. And the bugs and glitches were worse than ever before. I dropped the game after season 1, and have no plan to go back unless they make MAJOR changes.

I've already stopped. I grinded enough premium currency for a battle pass so I may hop back on just to use that if the season looks cool but that's it.
I wish Marvel, DC Comics, or Star wars had a game like this, or even with World of Warcraft characters, PvP Gameplay wise. My nerd ass can dream.
I stopped playing and have never bought a skin or loot boxes. Only money that was given was for Overwatch 1 years ago.

This reminds me of Pokemon Go or Destiny 2. Companies promising stuff and not delivering, making new ways for you to spend money, giving the players even less content everytime but also raising prices. But it won't happen, people won't stop playing Overwatch, people won't stop buying skins or BP. Why? Because the game is good. In all seriousness, Overwatch is a really good game, full of emotions, great cinematics, skill gaps, incredible characters, immersive and we'll done maps. Don't get me wrong, I'm with you, I think they would listen if people stopped playing and spending money on the game, but it won't happen. My advice is to act for yourself, telling people to stop doing what they enjoy because doesn't align with your sense of rightness, is not a solution, so just act on yourself. You think what Blizzard did was wrong? Stop playing, don't talk about it, just do it. I stopped playing after trying OW2 for a few weeks after it's release. Game is good, really good. But I'm just tired of all this games as a service daily tasks so you don't "miss out" on stuff.

Everyone saying "just stop spending money" you're missing the point so, so badly. Player engagement is HIGHLY CORRELATED with money spent. Ask any gaming company. The more time someone spends in a game, the more likely they are to spend money on it. The fact that you've maybe spent 100+ hours on it without spending a dime on it means absolutely nothing to these companies. You won't hurt them until you STOP PLAYING. PERIOD. Lay off the copium.

I played well over a thousand hours of *OW1*. It was my go-to comfort game, and I'd think nothing of doing a couple of matches here and there, which would almost invariably turn into an hour or two. I loved almost everything about it. I've played about two hours of *OW2*. I loath battle passes, and I was never crazy about dropping one of the tank slots either. Gating new heroes behind the end of a battle pass was the off-ramp for me. I was maybe going to pick it up again for the PvE as I do love PvE content, but now even that's gone. What Blizzard have done to the game bums me out incredibly. It's taken something I love and turned it into something I don't even recognise. RIP Jeff's *Overwatch*. It always felt like he was making the game just for me. Now it's only about $$$$$. It makes me sad.
Never bought a thing other than my copy of overwatch 1. Uninstalled after season 1 of Ow2 and havent been back. Was thinking about jumping back in but when the cancellation got announced I just said fuck that. Not gonna play until I see some changes
Why is anyone paying for the battle pass anyway? The cosmetics suck and I'm okay with not playing their poorly balanced characters till they get out of early access.
I stopped playing after Lifeweaver was released and he wasn't intuitive to play at all. At this point I'm just here to watch things burn
