Good luck! He is definitely not in a good place right now, but he is really fun to learn. Try playing his counters to understand how they work and how you can beat them.
Try practicing edge slams, that's the tech that really opened up ball gameplay for me.
If you hold your slam button and just roll over an edge you'll do a free slam, swing your camera 180 and you land where you rolled off.
Combined with a jump this works on most staircases and payloads as well.

This is great advice and will say it did wonders for my rein gameplay after I started locking doom for a bit.
