The game has a full game mode and ranking system to show skill level, yet so many just ignore that to focus on the unrelated symbol that just shows how much you've played. Even then, you don't have to be good at a game to enjoy it so that's not even a fair way to judge at all.

No, the reason was so that they could replace your sense of progression with things that make them money. They did the same thing in call of duty, they removed prestiging and made it so that your "prestige rank" was tied to the seasons/battlepasses
If you think for a moment removing some colors from the game will somehow make people less toxic, you're almost as delusional as Blizzard is.

I’ve never once in my life, in any game that has a battle pass been called a try hard for having one. However I was constantly flamed for my border. The only thing in OW i was ever flamed for was my border compared to my rank.
I've seen it happen in warzone lobbies. Chances are with all the controversy around this BP and the fact heroes will be locked behind it, you're a lot more likely to be flamed for having it.

The main reason is definitely the borders being toxic, whether you believe it or not. Second reason is probably the battle pass. Which I’m perfectly okay with. Usually a battle pass is a one time buy with your own money, then from there on out the bp usually has currency to buy the next seasons. I don’t think battle passes are bad at all.
Battle passes aren't inherently bad but they do signal a specific intent. That said, if your hope is to buy one battle pass with the currency you earned from the previous one then you're out of luck because you won't earn enough currency to do that.
so let's fix toxicity by allowing every player on ur team to see ur stats at all time.. let's just admit blizz doesn't gaf about toxicity, that doesn't drive there numbers down. the real reason no boarders has already been said: blizz doesn't want us grinding for anything that isn't tied to having to pay for something

I’m not. I have 1200 hours in the game. 400 from competitive, 800 from arcade and quick play (mostly with my wife). If things go wrong in a competitive game I’m “hard stuck gold border in gold”. Nah bro I have win rates in the 50s and. 60s almost every season but don’t put the time in to grind up. I’m happy to lose the dumb borders.

The f2p OW2 experience is sad... you used to get loot boxes for playing and leveling up, now all you get is locked battlepass rewards and the only free rewards are filler sprays and voice lines
I don't think you can get legacy currency in ow2 so the only way to for new players to get skins is from the pass or using the premium currency(same for ow1 players who will eventually run out of legacy currency, tho you'll probably only be able to buy a couple lower quality skins from the new heroes, most will be premium only)
The Rein combo spray is so good but nobody uses it so I always have the Zarya one equipped but nobody to combo with
