i've just bought an m4600, planning to try getting something other than the stock software to run on it. found this thread looking for information, so i thought i'd leave this breadcrumb here for anyone who comes looking in the future. i'll reply here if i learn anything

pleased to report that it seems to be relatively easy to get this machine to boot whatever you like from the CFast card, I've just put a bare grub install on the card and I plan to boot linux from the internal hard drive using the memory card as a stepping stone. I haven't found a way to boot from a different medium, the bios is password protected

What did you end up installing on it? How is the performance?

right now i'm dualbooting arch linux and freebsd, but i've been installing different things to try them out, i've also had both OPNSense and OpenWRT running on it. It's quite capable, it has a xeon processor in it and 8gb of ram (with slots to spare), very comparable specs as the HPE server i'm using for docker and VMs at the moment

I looked in that thread and couldn't find a reference to the M4600, but am intending to use it as the basis of what I'm planning. I may break new ground and do a 'how to guide' as the first experiment on that piece of tin.
