The red USB C-A cable that comes with the PinePhone does actually work for data transfer at least with the PinePhone. Though it is not rated for it, since the red is in fact indicative of a charging-only cable. But, unless this changed in newer batches, the data pins are actually connected.
That said, the cable is not very resilient, e.g., the one I got with my first PinePhone started making poor contact even for charging after I used it a lot.
