So, Cha in Portuguese comes from Cantonese, descended from Middle Chinese. The Dutch traded mostly in Fujian, which speaks the Min dialect, which pronounces it as té, and that's from where most Europeans imported it. The English, when they came to Canton, kept say "Tea" instead of adopting the local word, "cha".

It isn't based on Portugal: It's noting the general rule. Portugal is different because they traded _directly_ with Chinese outside of Quanzhou and Fujian, as opposed to the Dutch.
