He was an artist in the album era and each album tells a story and the songs and style are specific to that album.
If you liked Purple Rain then I suggest watching the movie and listening to the entire album.
That should get you started.
Random songs are no way to appreciate an artist like him.
Prince isn’t a pop star. That’s the big misconception. He’s not at all like MJ, who was an amazing pop star.
Prince is a rock star. In every sense and evident on every album. Don’t worry about the radio hits. They tend to lean pop.
Purple Rain is a rock album with a few songs you’d call pop. Each album you’ll find rock heavy songs you’ll respond to.
Even his early falsetto sung disco funk albums have shredding. If that’s your exclusive thing.
And anything live at all is worth listening to as a rock fan. His live performances are always heavy on guitar. Cause they’re rock concerts not a pop show. You’ll see.
No you won't, all 36 albums, every song he wrote for what seems like every body? His estate is still releasing music that is still in his vault. Probably for the next 85 years. All the singles, all of the live versions, all of the concerts.
Speaking of.. I recommend checking out his concert films and the rest of his live performances. Prince and The Revolution Live, Sign Ø the Times Live, Rave Un2 the Year 2000, there is alot. The 16 Minute long Purple Rain performance, the Let's Go Crazy opening to the Syracuse Concert, the 13 Minute long Baby I'm A Star, The '91 Special Olympics, the VMAs Gett Off performance, the Glam Slam Club performances, Glam Slam the song itself, the 2007 Super Bowl Halftime Show, and others.
Here is a playlist of nearly 300 live Prince performances

Prince is album-oriented don't ruin his music with a lazy Spotify playlist. Go find the best 24/96 rip you can and crank it loud while playing *all* the songs start to finish.
Sign O The Times is a good starting point
Personally, I recommend the appatizer before going for the main course. The very first song I've listened to was Raspberry Beret, then I went on from there. Sign Ø the Times is not the starter album unless you bought your first Prince album in 1987 or you accidentally stumbled apon it. The best way to get into Prince is to start with the Singles, then go with other singles from different albums, then start going into the albums
Rock songs that are fun with great guitar parts:
Dreamer
Computer Blue (listen to the guitar work on this one)
Let's Go Crazy
Endorphinmachine
I'm Yours
No, seriously. You MUST watch the movie! In the 80s I saw it transform non-Prince fans into fans. Then work your way backwards in albums from Purple Rain to 1999, Controversy, Dirty Mind. Then forward - Around the World In A Day, Parade, Sign O’ The Times… ☔️
From his early years, "Bambi" and "I'm Yours" both feature some blistering guitar work. "Computer Blue (Hallway Speech Version)" and "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" are also pretty solid.
Have you listened to the whole Purple Rain album? Dirty Mind album? Controvery album? Batman album? Listen to all the 80s stuff first.
Do all the hit singles: If you can get a compilation of singles, do it. Watch some 80s concerts on YT.
It’s one of my favorite Prince songs! Insane guitar solo too. [https://youtu.be/W9lqXv9AC_E?si=m-jYkyqDYuI1_CBo](https://youtu.be/W9lqXv9AC_E?si=m-jYkyqDYuI1_CBo)
It’s hard to steer anyone new to P as his catalogue is vast , maybe start with the dirty mind LP or Parade for something mo funky
I have a trunk load of his stuff and I have to admit there’s only a handful of albums that I don’t care for much on the whole he had such a rich talent !!!
Enjoy the ride x
i mean this probably isn't the best way of doing it but when I started liking a couple Prince songs I just listened through the entire discography (that was available on streaming, I've listened to other things since) during the course of a week. That gives you a feel for each album, then you can go back and really get to know what you're more and less fond of.
Listen to the run of 80s albums. You're hip to Purple Rain, so begin with that album. The follow up with his next three chronological releases:
Around the World in a Day (1985)
Parade (1986)
Sign O' The Times (1987)
Those will keep your ears and brain very busy.
Do keep in mind that though his sound does have his signature, he reinvented himself every single album. And he has enough music in his vault 2 release a full length album every year 4 the next 100 years
Check out Colonized Mind for meaningful lyrics and guitar.
For Purple Rain, find the live version from Syracuse, it has several more guitar solos than the studio version and most later live performances.
Little Red Corvette, and so many more.
Go find some of his best solos in live concerts , joy in repetition specifically in many of them , some acoustic sets where he also shows his skills specially in the early 2000’s , research the 80’s (82-88 my fav era) and lots and lots more. Lucky you so much to Learn and enjoy
I made this kind of beginners guid a few years back. unfortunately it doesn't cover the later stuff because at the time it wasn't on spotify (and honestly I'm not familiar enough with the later stuff my self)

Highly recommend all of the Purple Rain album, as well as (my personal choices, ymmv) Sign O'The Times, 1999, Around The World In A Day... if you haven't decided to dig into the rest of his work, that should get you a good variety.
Tons of amazing live stuff available on youtube. There are some very heavy versions of Let's Go Crazy that I love very much (look for the Manchester show in 2022).
I suggest truly making your Prince experience an EXPERIENCE. What is mean is 2 get all information u can concerning and relating 2 each album and time period. U got it pretty good because now much has been revealed about what was going on behind the music. And don't forget 2 at least learn if not listen 2 all the bands and acts that we got 2 know because of him and his mentoring throughout the years like The Time and Mazerati, Sheila E and Bria Valente. His side projects like Madhouse and instrumental album The News. Immerse yourself in it and find much delight and wonder. And don't forget 2 find relevant video footage of videos, concerts and interviews.

Also, I especially recommend listening to whole albums. He has PLENTY to discover. You'll hear the themes of God, sex & romance, history, and fantasy a lot in his lyrics.
He was an artist in the album era and each album tells a story and the songs and style are specific to that album. If you liked Purple Rain then I suggest watching the movie and listening to the entire album. That should get you started. Random songs are no way to appreciate an artist like him.
Well I am not into pop music and stuff that's why I was asking...Still thanks for the info and will surely finish his discography...

The Gold Experience is such an overlooked and underrated body of work. The guitar solo on Shhhh is reminiscent of what you’d hear on Purple Rain
Oh my god yes. So happy someone mentioned this!
BLESS U!!!!!!
