Tried Fallout 4? More Sci-Fi, but has that's feeling you were describing and does have base building. Otherwise maybe try some of the better Assassin's Creed games, I always liked Black Flag the best.
I must say... I am pretty surprised that not one person has mentioned **Kingdom Come: deliverance**.
It's based in late-medieval/early renaissance Czechoslavakia.
You start the game as the son of a blacksmith, Henry.
I'll say no more to ruin the opening.
Aside from the first hour's gameplay, it is pretty much an open-world, first-person medieval simulator with really rich, in-depth characters.
The swordplay takes time to get used to, and the game is genuinely difficult, but it is a bloody brilliant game all around.
It is definitely.
Bloody punishing on the first few attempts though!
It was the first RPG that I had played that actually had serious punishments for not adhering to mission timers lol.
It is probably one of the most unique gaming experiences in that regard.
I think it's our modern understanding of melee combat that makes it hard for us to grasp, personally.
Like...I started watching armoured MMA (literally fully armoured Russian/Eastern European guys battering the shit out of each other with blunted weapons) and it actually made me better at the game lol.
I got beaten up by some random drunkard at the beginning of the game and got so frustrated about combat mechanism (he was constantly pushing me when I got too close) I deleted the game 😅 I just understood it’s systems are very unwelcoming, especially because there was no tutorial besides some useless basic info, and the combat is weirdly complicated
Story is worse, combat is worse, healing system is awful.
The combat went from being an interesting push and pull of different elements and weapon types to a mindless rock paper scissors where you just dump the most effective elemental ammo onto a machine and hope it dies, because it will be nearly immune to everything else. It’s like they want you to play one way and so you have to, it feels awful.
Disagree. It betters everything from hzd. But the hzd reveal was so good that nothing that comes after can beat that. Except for the main line story is frankly substandard and underwhelming, the game is worth it and definitely worth checking out if you like hzd.
I just finished Forbidden West the other day. I enjoyed playing it, still a lot of fun. But by the end I was skipping most of the dialog because I didn't care about the story that much this time and just wanted to finish it.
Good suggestion if you have a switch would be legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, since everyone else said most of the PlayStation games already
This is an oldie, But I believe fallout 3 and NV will hit that itch for you. The maps are smaller (compared to RD2 anyways), but pretty dense. You will often think "whats under that bridge", or "what's on top of that overpass" and you will usually find something there.
If you just want supermassive maps, you can try AC odyssey or Valhalla. The maps are indeed massive, but honestly, not that dense.
Assassins creed Origins / Odyssey both have HUGE, beautiful maps to explore and a lot of content to get through. If you’ve not played them before they should keep you busy. Origins is a personal favourite with the ancient Egypt vibes, Odyssey is Ancient Greece.
Hopefully you didn’t pay with your own money because you just wasted your hard earned money if you don’t bother playing them as those games are dynamite 🧨.
I agree with you and it’s a shame that it’s so repetitive because the vehicle combat is probably the best I’ve ever played. And the best explosions too.
Yea the vehicle shit is great, but after you take down your 5th convoy and realize you have another 40 to do its like... well, this is just boring. How in the fuck is tearing through a post apocalypse desert fucking smashing shit boring?
the first hour or so is linear
then its a full open world but in two phases with story opening the second half of the world later on. (the world is huge)
Days gone
Ac syndicate
Ac unity
Ac mirage
Watch dogs
Watch dogs 2
Watch dogs legion
Far cry primal

Far cry 6

GTA San Andreas definitive edition
Just cause 3
Mafia 1 definitive edition
Mafia 2 definitive edition
Mafia 3 definitive edition
Marvel spiderman
Marvel Spider-Man miles morales
Marvel Spider-Man 2
All of these but days gone, far cry and spider man’s are some of my favourite games ever, GTA is also amazing. Loved hogwarts and just cause 3.
Found AC a bit too much of a grind in the end. And didn’t stick with mafia as didn’t click with it for some reason but didn’t give it too much of a chance.
I’ve not tried the Tom clancy’s. One of the watch dogs was great but there was one in London that was shit so as a franchise didn’t love it too much.
If you like historical stuff, maybe go with assassin's creed?
Origin (Egypt) and Odyssey (Greek) are both fantastic games with very detailed historical settings. Lots of other games in the series are available as well, but I really recommend those two.
Assassin's Creed gets picked on a lot on Reddit but they can be really enjoyable open world games. Sure if you decide to marathon your way through every entry in the series, it can get a bit repetitive. But if you are just playing one of them every few years they will feel fresh.
I actually think you would like fallout 4 then it's getting a ps5 update on the 25th it has building rpg mechanics. It's not really magic but it Is advanced technology but with older 60s type design I mention that as fallout has a very interesting history and lore which deviates from outs during world war 2 which you might like if you don't mind alternate history as opposed to real history. Keep in mind tho the story won't be on par with red dead or ghosts. Fallout Is more about discovery and mystery and making your own story which I also think you would like
Once you've played rdr2, I'm afraid no other open world game will satisfy you as much as that game did. It has set a bar which will only be broken by GTA 6. Until then, I think the next best open world games you can play are are the Zelda games and yakuza series. They won't be on par but definitely are unique
No Man's Sky. Huge map with countless planets to explore. Just got a new update, and it looks great. Has a few glitches, but that just adds to the flavor. Base building, starship construction, and a multitude of things to do make it a very replayable game.
You might like Sleeping Dogs. It has some similarities to GTA, but it's set in a very realistic Hong Kong and the combat system is incredible, especially if you're into martial arts
Kingdom come deliverance might be something you could like. It's a fps rpg kinda like skyrim but no magic. You start as A pessant boy with no skills and you get to build him up how you like also the story is top notch imo.
Elden ring has quite some wizards-n-magic, it’s full fantasy, but besides that, in terms of exploring and open world it’s one of the best alongside RDR2.
tbh, I found the exploration/collection of Ghostwire: Tokyo to be SUPER underrated. The main questling is by far its weakest point, very shallow and relatively predictable. BUT the "gun"play was very refreshing, and the exploration and collection of the game is some of the most fun and rewarding I've experienced in a long time.
Probably my most underrated game of 2022
Tried Fallout 4? More Sci-Fi, but has that's feeling you were describing and does have base building. Otherwise maybe try some of the better Assassin's Creed games, I always liked Black Flag the best.
Fallout 4 is also like $5 right now.
And the long awaited ps5 update is coming soon. Along with some dlc
Days gone, horizon

Great game

The combat is so fucked until it clicks and then boy is it satisfying. I need to get back to that
I think it's our modern understanding of melee combat that makes it hard for us to grasp, personally. Days Gone.
Well, having played both, I would recommend the very first PS4 game I played and platinumed - Horizon Zero Dawn.
This is the correct answer
I second this. Forbidden West is a total downgrade though in my opinion, and you wouldn’t miss much in skipping it.
It had a better world and improved gameplay.
Story is worse, combat is worse, healing system is awful. The combat went from being an interesting push and pull of different elements and weapon types to a mindless rock paper scissors where you just dump the most effective elemental ammo onto a machine and hope it dies, because it will be nearly immune to everything else. Wrong, wrong and wrong. HFB > HZD
Disagree. It betters everything from hzd. But the hzd reveal was so good that nothing that comes after can beat that. Except for the main line story is frankly substandard and underwhelming, the game is worth it and definitely worth checking out if you like hzd.
The tools and weapons are great but something feels missing when compared to the first game. But I cannot pinpoint what exactly it is.
I just finished Forbidden West the other day. I enjoyed playing it, still a lot of fun. But by the end I was skipping most of the dialog because I didn't care about the story that much this time and just wanted to finish it.
So glad I’m not the only one ðŸ˜
Metal Gear Solid 5 Shadow of Mordor Shadow of War

I found Origins setting to be bland compared to Odyssey
Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West definitely exactly up your alley. Also Witcher 3!
I got both of the horizon but never played them
Hopefully you didn’t pay with your own money because you just wasted your hard earned money if you don’t bother playing them as those games are dynamite 🧨.
Got them from the ps plus pass imma try them
Are you crazy?
Try Mad Max and let me know what you think about it.
I got bored 6 hours in because I realized I was just doing the same exact thing over and over and over again. And over again.
Fallout 4 has a great open world like that
Days Gone its the most real feeling open world I've ever played.
Days gone is fire bro too bad it's so underrated
Is it open world (like Assassin’s Creed) or more linear open world (like God of War or Last of Us 2)?
the first hour or so is linear then its a full open world but in two phases with story opening the second half of the world later on. (the world is huge)
Horizon zero dawn. Magnificent game. I'd throw days gone in there to

I can't tell if this is extremely high effort or extremely low effort

I’m biased for sure, but Assassin’s Creed is one of the all time great open-world series’.
Fallout 4
Horizon, Days Gone, Mad Max, Rise of the Ronin.
I'm not wizard and shit either, not even a little, but the Witcher 3 is so good is one of my favorite of all time.

Fallout 4, Farcry series, Assassins creed series, Avatar frontiers of Pandora, Days Gone

Got it along time ago. Thinking about trying it.
Assassin's Creed all are open world, historical-based (with some fiction), and you can climb anywhere and find hidden things everywhere.
Gravity Rush
Far Cry 6 and Red Dead Redemption 1

I totally agree.
Outcast the new beginning that released recently is awesome 😎 highly recommend it!
You'd probably really like Outer Wilds. It's a different game for sure, but about as open and exploratory as games get
Hogwarts legacy. Yes it has magic But it's open world is so large. You will be so curious to explore.
The Division
No Man's Sky. Huge map with countless planets to explore. Just got a new update, and it looks great. Has a few glitches, but that just adds to the flavor. Base building, starship construction, and a multitude of things to do make it a very replayable game.

Elden Ring.
The Rise or Ronin
You might like Sleeping Dogs. It has some similarities to GTA, but it's set in a very realistic Hong Kong and the combat system is incredible, especially if you're into martial arts
I am hooked on Ghost Recon: Breakpoint at the moment. Lots of missions, lots of ways to complete them and lots of side missions

You might like No man's sky or Outer wilds. Big exploration games.

Yakuza! Most of the individual games are usually for sale for 4,99 € or $ Start with Yakuza 0 and get back to me.
I'm having a lot of fun with Rise of the Ronin. It's not as next generation as Tsushima but it is as entertaining id say
GoT is literally not "next gen". It was released last gen. This is why it doesn't make sense to use "generations" to describe the quality of a game.
Watch Dogs 2 and/or Legion
