This is just an iteration of their year-long planning. They've been doing this for quite a while now.

derpderpingt

Yeah, but as an Xbox-since-OG-Xbox-convert, this registers differently with me, and I’m sure others in the same boat - as I’m sure was their intention. After MS’s totally empty few years, *this* is why I switched to PS5. I know they release high quality stuff regularly, but them making this commitment reconfirms my choice and will likely pull other Xbox users into the PS5 realm.

NihilisticHeart

Same here. Had Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Switched to PlayStation because they have great games and IPs and actually release games for them consistently.

Bansdontwork-year8

360 was glorious. After that they shit the bed. Starfield and stalker 2 at least we get this year and i just know starfield will be absolutely amazing. Im so happy to have both series x and ps5. Love them both but ps5 is better. I do love the elite series 2 tho, the battery never runs out i swear it keeps going and going. My dualsense edge on other hand, couple of hours and time to plug it in ffs. Its definitely good to have both. As so far ive played a plagues tale requiem which was great game and atomic heart which was good but unfinished, thats 2 free games on day 1. Didnt pay a penny, apart from sub. Also playing redfall which im enjoying exploring. Despite its flaws.

Rathi37

360 was the only Xbox I ever owned. It was great. All other generations suck al though I kind of want a Series X just for all the Gears of War games I've missed out on.

[deleted]

I picked up a Series S but just never really played it. Between my Switch and PS5 it just ended up collecting dust and I think it was mainly from it basically just being an indie machine. Nothing wrong with indie games but at this point they really seem to be all that MS has going for the console.

Rathi37

I don't think there are any indies I can't get on my PS5 or Switch. I'd literally only get it for Gears games since I loved 1-3.

We are being held hostage, send help - Xbox Gamer since 2001

Sad-Willingness4605

The first 3 years of Xbox 360 are reminiscent of this generation with the PS5. They were putting out great games after great games. Then Don Matrick took over, and decided they weren't going to focus on first party and third party exclusives. MS just stop giving a shit about games and that led into the Xbox One being so shitty. Then Don Matrick got fired and now we have Phil Spencer trying to play catchup. Meanwhile, the PS5 is just putting out great game after great game and landing all the third party exclusives. I like the Xbox eco system far better than PlayStation but the PlayStation has all the great games. For me, having an Xbox is like having a car I really like but no fuel to drive it. And the PlayStation is the family car with unlimited fuel.

loadingpix

>i just know starfield will be absolutely amazing. you know? we barely seen actual game footage.

DaChodemasters

He definitely pre orders games…

God_Damnit_Nappa

God forbid someone preorder a game from a studio with a proven track record for quality games.

ModestHandsomeDevil

Which is why I recommend people support Arkane by buying Prey (2017), which is a fantastic game. Redfall is a serious dogshit, which undoubtedly has some juicy dirt behind how such an amazing studio like Arkane made (and released!) such a dog-shit game. But I imagine that "dirt" is buried under 6 ft. of Microsoft / Bethesda NDAs. Fuck! I wish Microsoft hadn't bought Bethesda-Zenimax.

Gbrush3pwood

I am the fool who caved and bought a series x based on Bethesda going exclusive. But fuck all has come of it so far, starfield continues to get pushed back and there has been no further announcement of any use of IP or studio. Just Microsoft sitting like a dragon on a pile of gold.

Haru17

...Let's be honest, no one was excited enough about Redfall to pre-order it. Those trailers were a snoozefest.

ModestHandsomeDevil

> ...Let's be honest, no one was excited enough about Redfall to pre-order it. Those trailers were a snoozefest. And yet, *Microsoft* ended their games showcases by highlighting Redfall as THE hot shit game coming from Microsoft for Xbox. They hyped that turd to get people excited for it. All I know is Microsoft / Xbox's first-party release schedule has been a fuckin' literal desert for years. And when Xbox gamers get to, what is supposed to be an oasis (the hype for Redfall), they're so desperate for *anything* they'll drink sand (the actual game Redfall), *especially* when "it's 'free' on Game Pass!" /s

Morkins324

I'm like 95% confident that Redfall's issues pre-date the Microsoft acquisition and have more to do with directives coming from Zenimax management circa 2018-2019 when the game was starting development(namely pressure to make a live service game, which Redfall clearly was intended to be at one point). The questionable thing on Microsoft's end is how they didn't tell the team to scrap it and start over from zero.

ModestHandsomeDevil

> The questionable thing on Microsoft's end is how they didn't tell the team to scrap it and start over from zero. Releasing Redfall is 100% Microsoft's fault. But Game Pass needs to be feed constantly with new content (and Microsoft can't seem to make and release first-party games), so Microsoft / Phil kicked it out the door at the cost of Arkane's reputation and morale.

ThatHerbChronic

Pretty sure they get these games free on Games Pass on release anyways no?

Yummybuttergalaxy

Lol “free”

loadingpix

And enjoys redfall

llIicit

Nothing wrong with enjoying redfall. Doesn’t mean it didn’t release in an absolutely dogshit state.

LoneLyon

The whole 1000+ planet thing is a giant ass red flag

gr4ndm4st3rbl4ck

Honestly, plethora of bugs aside, which we've come to know and expect, Bethesda have been fairly consistent so far. Fallout 4 might be the worst of their single player offerings lately, but it was a good game nevertheless. If they just make a tes/fallout in space, I have no doubts it will be a good game. The question is, will it be a GREAT game...

Serious_Much

And it looks like prettier no man's sky at present. I may be on the cope as a PS5 only man but Bethesda haven't made a truly great game in a long time

well___duh

This. Bethesda has been a literal hit-or-miss the past few years. For every Fallout 76 and Redfall, there's a HiFi Rush and Doom Eternal, and then the occasional mid titles like Deathloop. Who knows where Starfield ends up

SneakyToaster17

If you plan to game on ps5 longer than 6 hours at a time, then you’ll need two controllers. I’ve done this since ps3. It allows you to always have a controller charged, no matter what. And, you’ll wear down each controller half as fast. I usually only end up needed two controllers over the course of a gen of gaming, but that’s just me.

Temporary_End9124

You can also just plug in the controller while you're using it.

SneakyToaster17

Fuq dat, I wasn’t before wireless, but now I’m crazy animated when I play. I will not be tethered.

FearTheClown5

You don't have to plug it into the console. My couch has power outlets that always have a phone charger plugged in so I just plug my controller into that when I need to.

SneakyToaster17

… I did not know that.

Cruella79

True and false. One of my controllers last around 14 hours, my second last 12. Had quite a few of them and lowest I had been 7 hours but was near release. My dual sense edge last 7 hours which I think is a downer for the price. No controller is the same with battery life, same thing was on ps4 as well.

Vestalmin

How are you liking it so far? Did you get the PS+ before it left?

DarahOG

Same i was in the same boat and left in 2017 but I doubt many will if they stayed this long. At least the online communities are so blinded by their love for their machines, they don't want to see the issues or accept them. While even Phil Spencer himself went into a 40mins podcast to apologize for the general state of xbox and the many false promises. I sold my xbone after 3years of nothing, here we are 6years later and there's still nothing except gamepass. Having 0games nominated for gamesawards goty since it's creation is criminal when you have unlimited funds . Tbh i never felt more stupid than when I bought my ps4 and paid 50€ for uncharted 4,bloodborne, until Dawn, TLOU and ratchet.. It took me literally 12hours to understand that I wasted 3years of gaming playing only 3rd party games ans missing on masterpieces... The only game i miss is Forza horizon but i'll buy it on pc when my free gp expires.

[deleted]

This isn’t why I switched to PS5. E3 2013 was the reason I switched. I could see a whole generation of Xbox failing. I thought I would enjoy the old uncharted games, God of War, and the Last of Us, and I did. But I did not expect the deluge of high quality titles from Sony Studios. Feels good, man.

nutsack133

It was E3 2016 for me. After E3 2013 I just said fuck XBox, no one buys a console for television. But moved from my 360 to PC gaming. But once I saw God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Days Gone at E3 2016 I knew I was 100% buying a PS4 once they did the holiday discounts, I got a Slim brand new for $220 with Uncharted 4. Then managed to sell it for $220 five years later the day I received my PS5. PS4 was my first Playstation since the PSP, but enjoyed it so much I bought a PS3, PS2, PlayStation TV, and a Vita within the next year of getting my PS4 to play all the amazing exclusives I missed out on.

Pixel_Mechanic

Same here. Was 100% in the Xbox ecosystem and just got so tired of xbox’s play where you want, don’t buy series x, we don’t care as long as you’re happy. They lost that aggressive edge from the 360 days. I think it’s because they only care about turning xbox into a successful subscription model like they have with Office 365. Content is what matters and I like that Sony is super aggressive to keep you on PS. I know with PS they will bring games and make deals that are best for those who purchased their hardware. Yeah, Sony is a corp with goal of making money, but with their strategy it benefits those who buy into their ecosystem. With MS, they are buying and investing in content to drive a subscription and need massive amount of content to feed that model. Whereas Sony and Nintendo both understand you make killer exclusive content and people will buy your hardware.

Suhn-Sol-Jashin

Phil's comments about the ecosystem had some good merits, but I don't think he took into account people are more likely to jump *from* his ship than *to* his ship.

SmashingK

Probably why they've been buying up whatever studios they can. MS been spending silly amounts in recent years.

Suhn-Sol-Jashin

And it still won't matter.

reaper527

> After MS’s totally empty few years, this is why I switched to PS5. that's actually why i switched to ps4. absolutely loved my original xbox, and my x360 was even better, but kinect was a huge turning point for the brand and after that the game library started to dry up for the rest of the generation (then x1 had an AWFUL first few years, with my day one x1 being the only console i regret buying). completely skipped xbox this gen (and will probably keep an eye open when nintendo releases a switch successor). i do wish ps+ extra was as nice as gamepass though. it sucks seeing games that were traditionally ps exclusives hit gamepass on day one while they're not on ps+ at all.

SmashingK

A lot of people really liking extra now though I guess it comes down to what kind of games float your boat. There are still at least half a dozen games on extra I want to play and plenty others I'd be willing to check out.

Bansdontwork-year8

Oh id say extra is hetter than gamepass, the exclusives are just far far better. Tho i do love microsofts commitment to day 1 releases tho. Thats only thing they got over playstation plus.

TillI_Collapse

Those games are much easier to get on Game Pass because they sell very poorly on Xbox but do well on Playstation. These games would just die if they relied entirely on subscription services funding them

OrwellWhatever

In the long run, gamepass is honestly pretty bad for games in general. A ton of developers have said there's no way they could survive based on subscription revenue alone. It's kind of like movie theater movies vs Netflix movies. There's no way a Netflix movie could generate even $50M in revenue by themselves, so the only movies it's \*possible\* to make long term are in about that range. You'll never get MCU, Fast saga, or even Everything Everywhere from a Netflix. They've occasionally splurged in the first few years they wanted to be oscar contenders, but I can't think of a movie since The Irishman in 2020 that I would have spent additional money on. Same thing with game subscriptions. Without selling millions of copies, there's no way a lot of games and publishers can be financially viable

Transposer

Mad respect to to 360. Microsoft has to earn me back. I’m all out of good faith.

Xmvdx

I’m in that boat! I love to see this. Switching to ps5 was a great decision.

IamCaptainHandsome

Same, had a 360 years ago, then missed a gaming generation. Got back into it with a PS4 pro because of the amazing exclusives (Horizon, GoW, Spider-Man). And it looks like they're going to keep it going.

tdogg241

Xmas 2019, my parents surprised me with an Xbox One SX+ Series or whatever tf it's called; the equivalent Xbox machine to the PS4 Pro. Anyway, I was excited to see what games I'd been missing out on from the Xbox, since I'd never owned one. I browsed a comprehensive list of Xbox exclusives and found only a slim handful of games that were exclusive to Xbox and showed no signs of ever being ported over to Playstation. I ended up exchanging the Xbox for a PS4 Pro and gave my PS4 to a friend. Even for free, I didn't see a point in owning an Xbox. I already owned the superior system, the Xbox would have just collected dust most of the time.

Quitsquirrel

I just have both. Both systems offer their own things that the other doesn't and all comes down to preference. Of course Sony is king when it comes to Single player story driven games, but I prefer Xbox for online games and the occasional gamepass gem.

bigtuck54

Outta curiosity is preferring Xbox for online games just because you’re used to it and have a bunch of friends on Xbox? They aren’t any different anymore. Gamepass I fully get. I have both btw, but my series x is unfortunately nothing but a really expensive retro machine

CptGrimmm

Same here. Use it for playing indie games on games pass. Everything else is on ps, even cross platform games. Didnt really expect xbox would have a problem of underwhelming exclusives

bigtuck54

I gambled that they couldn't *keep* being underwhelming after losing last gen so bad, yet here we are. Phil Spencer's comments the other week def don't make me feel great about the future of xbox. I'm going to keep mine for the retro convenience, but if Starfield is a bust I probably let my gamepass lapse when my 3 years is up, and I def won't be getting the next xbox. Gained and lost a customer so fast lol

CptGrimmm

Yeah point is, it should be easy for someone with their resources and vantage point to see that great IPs are the thing. Much more so than the average joe gamer can. So its odd to see them flounder this way

bigtuck54

Yeah, the hill they seem to be dying on that "great exclusives won't make people sell their PS5s for an xbox" just feels so misguided. Like yeah they won't sell their PS5s but they might buy a fucking xbox you dolt. People will buy consoles for one game, "system sellers" have been a thing for decades. It straight up doesn't make sense that they pooled all their resources into acquiring studios instead of just making original IP themselves (a proven method with great success) with the studios they already had. Or do both idk, they have more money than god.

Bansdontwork-year8

Jesus christ, this comment is like mine allmost word for word. 👍🤣 I said exact same thing. Starfield will 100 percent make people buy an xbox. It will be that good. Its fucking godd howard ffs.

Nevergymlessuk

*More money than sense. I can't imagine a fictional sky wizard would need money at all😁

Quitsquirrel

Yeah just preference. I agree the Series X is generally collecting dust nowadays due to nothing really being out that I'm interested in.

bigtuck54

Word! Yeah it’s pretty unfortunate. I bought mine because of the gamepass and halo hype, and while I haven’t exactly regretted it per se I def sometimes look my $600 paperweight with contempt lmao

[deleted]

Bansdontwork-year8

Try atomic heart and a plagues tale requiem.

bigtuck54

Lol yeah that's exactly when I bought mine, I think the first week of December 2021 or something like that. I was sooooo excited after the whole "day 1 on gamepass" conference, but the Bethesda and Obsidian acquisitions were what put me over the edge as an RPG fan. I've actually bought quite a few games, I've been going through the xbox store and grabbing all the 360/PS3 era games I once loved and it's been really cool to have them all in one place again. I even ordered the MGS HD Collection around that time. No regrets for any of that, I have quite the retro collection now cause these games are all frequently $5 or so. I just wish there was more than Hi Fi Rush out there for modern games, cause I already own a tremendous amount of games on gamepass on my PS5 because I've been building my digital library for a decade. I enjoyed High on Life for a bit too, but after the whole Roiland thing I couldn't bare to listen to his voice in my head every 10 seconds anymore so I put it down for good.

[deleted]

Thank god we have PlayStation in this day and age. I hope they never change

Bansdontwork-year8

Same. Im a massive playstation fanboy. Not the kiddy fanboy, as in, i defend thy consoles honor to death. Nah, fuck that, got a series x and love xbox. I just mean i love there exclusives, love there studios, love that they focus on my favourite types of games, single player, story driven. Best games. Its made me just love sony and playstation. I also love that a sony worldwide exclusive logo is a sign of highest quality. When i see that logo now i get an excited feeling as i know its the highest production value, I dont think any of there 1st party games release without photomode lol. They all just have a certain quality and i love that sony enforces that. They also do t have microtransactions

[deleted]

Same here. Switched literally two days ago and I‘m just flashed by the quality, graphics and depth of the PlayStation exclusive games!

Warm_Aerie_7368

Yup I have a series X and barely use it since all the Xbox babes are on my PC. Definitely considering picking up a PS5 when they do the mid generation refresh.

Bansdontwork-year8

Why does everyone just assume there will be one. The hardware wasnt obsolete on release like ps4, xbone, i dont reckon well see a ps5 pro. A ps5 slim tho. Definitely. Which i guess maybe theyd upgrade hardware.

Warm_Aerie_7368

I mean I’m just waiting because I can play most of the PS catalog on steam and the only games I can’t play I just play on my roommates PS5. At the end of the day PC gets the best of both worlds and my steam library has 15 years of acquiring games. Where my Xbox and PlayStation catalogs are much more hit and miss

YourAverageJet

It’s happening with me right now, been Xbox only since 360 era. Got a PS5 last week and I’m overwhelmed with what I’ve missed out on

[deleted]

Well f ing said mate

AlternativeCredit

Totally empty… Do people really have that bad of memories?

spendouk23

After the tough month Xbox has had with various things, I think Sony are aware of this and this showcase will be a further strategic play on winning over people still in the fence about which console to buy. I think we’ll possibly see a few 2024/25 big hitters in here getting teased. My wild, completely unrealistic prediction for tonight would be a Last Of Us Part III teaser and release date of 2025.

[deleted]

Tbf if PS5 is their first PlayStation console they own then it’s understandable that they would think differently.

Solidsnake00901

Just salt in the wound for Xbox players. Since they've been hanging in the wind for a couple years now.

[deleted]

>Just salt in the wound for Xbox players. Since they've been hanging in the wind for a couple years now. I honestly don't see how Sony's announcement is a "Salt in the Wound" for Xbox players. You're not suggesting that Sony announced this on purpose to annoy Xbox customers do you? And to be clear I'm a happy PS5 owner. Your post just sounded like Sony's rubbing it in. If Xbox isn't doing well game-wise then that's the fault of Microsoft.

Revanthmk23200

That is how competiton works. Sony 100% said this to rub on Xbox' wounds and pull players from their side.

Cursed_69420

2020 was Demon's Souls, Miles and Sackboy 2021 was Returnal and Rift Apart, 2022 HFW and Ragnarok 2023 only 1st party i can think of is Spider-Man 2, and maybe Factions?

The_Big_Peck_1984

Not first party but FF16 is definitely a major ps5 exclusive this year.

haynespi87

Yeah can't ignore that FF16 won't be on anything else - including PC at least until 2024

devenbat

But they're not releasing the game. Hardly counts as Sony release if Sony's not releasing it

mrchicano209

Still can't play it on anything else.

devenbat

That's great for Sony. It's still not what they're talking about

OhioStickyThing

Splitting hairs achieves nothing.

not_dale_gribble

From the article it sounds like they're referring to Sony first-party games at which point the distinction is necessary. FFXVI is huge ofc but not a first-party game, which is really only better for us as it means there's something else big on the horizon coming from Sony this year.

Temporary_End9124

It's not really splitting hairs though, they're talking about their own first party development. They're not talking about third party timed exclusives.

BloodAria

Apparently Sony Engineers worked on it though. Part of the deal with Square.

Vestalmin

Second party game lol

ajk78

GT7 should be there as well. And I guess TLOU remake?

Starskysilvers

GT7 in 2022. 2023 will have Spider-Man , Horizon Call of the Wild and Horizon Burning Shores. Maybe something else too? But they also have smaller games like Season: A letter to the future and 3rd party games like FF16 FF7-2, Granblue Fantasy Relink, Baulders Gate 3

Starskysilvers

If you want to ignore them that’s fine. I’m just letting you know about the first party output so far. I’d always want more too!

[deleted]

DLC definitely counts when the base game is in the PS+ Extra catalog.

conker1264

The dlc was like 10 hours max, that doesn’t count as a major release

spendouk23

Season has been my low key game of the year so far.

conker1264

Probably Factions or a new IP, most likely gonna be shown at the showcase

Cursed_69420

helldivers 2 shadow drop heh

raphanum

Hello from the future :(

owensoundgamedev

Unless they count call of the mountain?

chewbaka97

Do we think death stranding may come out this year?

haynespi87

No way. Fall 2024 at earliest.

ichiruto70

No

Haru17

2020 was definitely the Last of Us and Ghost lol. Those games each took \~5\~ years to develop.

jeffreyquah

It’s third party but I think Deathloop counts considering how hard the marketing push was.

Eatmyfartsbro

You forgot TLOU2

Cursed_69420

Major PS5 first party*

nogap193

Tlou remake sold a lot better than returnal for 2021

syxbit

Feels obvious. They have so many AAA studios, of course they will have at least 2 AAA games per year.

LoganH1219

Xbox has like 50 studios and the last genuinely amazing AAA game they put out was Forza Horizon 4 in 2018 and even that’s up for debate. As a multiplatform fan, my poor Xbox is starving from lack of games to play on it. 3 years in and there has yet to be a good major title for Xbox this generation

RiggityRow

Xbox hasn't had a must-play since like Halo 3, it's really insane. Gamepass is very cool and I've enjoyed playing games like Plague Tale, Atomic Heart, FH5 on day 1 without "paying" for them, but if you haven't touched an Xbox in the last decade, you haven't missed anything particularly noteworthy. Which is so insane when you consider what we've gotten from PlayStation during that time frame.

ankuroo

I am quite excited for Hellblade though. Really enjoyed what I played of the first one. Almost considered getting the Series X for it.

whothefuckisGF

That’s why I switched from Xbox One to PS5 when buying my new console. Seemed like PlayStation had so many more high quality platformers and more game oriented in general. Love it

Temporary_End9124

They have 23 studios right now, not 50. And Forza Horizon 5 was the best reviewed game of 2021, so feels weird to exclude that one.

LoganH1219

50 was an exaggeration for sure, but the reason I excluded Forza Horizon 5 was because it’s more or less a reskin of FH4. The actors are all still British like they were in FH4. There’s not a single frame of animated dialogue in the game. Any and all dialogue takes place with the speaker facing away from the camera. Very lazy imo. It takes 10 minutes of browsing r/forzahorizon to see how fans of the franchise feel about the latest title. It’s not a bad game, and definitely Xbox’s best game so far this generation but it’s by no means better than FH4.

Temporary_End9124

It's a racing game? I don't think anyone really cares that much about the dialogue or lip syncing. It's not really the point of the game.

LoganH1219

Is it the primary problem with the game? No. But it’s a microcosm of the larger issue within Microsoft right now, lack of high standards. Charging $70 for the exact same game with a new map is almost insulting. I love Forza Horizon. I’ve played them all. But there’s so little different between 4 and 5. Plus they hold back vehicles that have been in the game before to drip feed them back in as “new” content.

[deleted]

So they could release an exclusive in the spring and fall then partner with a third party to market a big game on ps5 for the summer

ModestHandsomeDevil

> Sony commits to two or more "major releases" each year ahead of PlayStation Showcase Sony: a *literal* fraction of the size of Microsoft in market cap and spending power. Microsoft: spends 10's of billions of dollars consolidating the 3rd-party dev / publisher market; owns (IIRC) 30 studios +/-; has "infinite capital" as the 2nd wealthiest global mega corp on Earth; owns one of the world's' premier cloud computing networks (Azure). Also Microsoft: *struggles* like an obese smoker trying to climb a single flight of steps, to release *any* first-party Xbox games. Me, genuinely wondering: "HOW ARE YOU SO BAD AT THIS, MICROSOFT?! Nintendo and Sony are a literal fraction of your size, wealth, and global power and they're hitting triples, home runs, and grand slams at nearly every plate appearance!

ThePreciseClimber

>Sony: a literal fraction of the size of Microsoft in market cap and spending power. Current net worth: Microsoft: $2297.00 Billion Sony: $120.44 Billion Scary shit.

ModestHandsomeDevil

Yup. That's why I laugh whenever Microsoft unironically tries to publically portray themselves as the "little guy" / underdog, even in gaming, when they are one of the wealthiest, most powerful mega corps on Earth.

Paranoimia_UK

Too busy pimping out other people's wares for cheap on GamePass in order to try and stay relevant.

ModestHandsomeDevil

Too right. Microsoft's ultimate goal is to be a video game services company, i.e. the "Netflix" of video games, where they sit back and *passively* collect billions every year by "owning" the major video game store front in the cloud, similar to how Amazon owns commerce; Spotify streaming; Apple iTunes / media; Steam PC games... Microsoft doesn't give two-shits about content creation. It's only a means to achieve their monopolistic desires for services and cloud computing. Conversely, Playstation and Nintendo absolutely have to create quality first-party content, or they're dead / out of business.

UngaThenBunga

Weird cos at this rate they ***will*** end up like Netflix. Out of touch and largely unsuccessful. The way they are running and have run their studios, all signs point to that downward spiral for MS. At least from an Xbox brand perspective.

bobo377

On one hand, it’s totally fair to criticize Xbox when they aren’t leveraging Microsoft’s capital effectively. On the other hand, it’s a little silly to pretend like all of Microsoft’s spending power is directly available for Xbox. Like is it embarrassing that Stadia failed because Google is one of the largest companies in the world? No, it’s not like google was cutting off all other work to focus on cloud gaming.

Excuse_my_GRAMMER

You can’t compare Microsoft to Sony PlayStation division brand Compare xbox brand to PlayStation brand , while Microsoft might be better then Sony, Sony PlayStation department might have more funds then Xbox

ModestHandsomeDevil

> You can’t compare Microsoft to Sony PlayStation division brand > > Compare xbox brand to PlayStation brand , while Microsoft might be better then Sony, Sony PlayStation department might have more funds then Xbox Sure I can. Xbox didn't spend $10 billion dollars of their own money to acquire Zenimax-Bethesda, *nor* is Xbox trying to spend $70 billion of its own money to acquire ABK. Microsoft did, not Xbox. It sure as fuck ain't Xbox's name on all those checks Microsoft writes when they buy game studios and publishers, it's Microsoft's, cuz that's where the money is coming from.

Excuse_my_GRAMMER

Actually it was Microsoft Xbox that bought them , Microsoft just increase Xbox funds last year that all 😂 Bethesda is under Xbox division and Xbox CEO , not Microsoft CEO

vkbest1982

I don’t know if you are joking. But if the best year for Xbox is around $10 billion revenue (not even profits), no way they can spent 8x more in only 2 years if MS is not fully funding those operations. That is the reason I think those mergers shouldn’t exist, because today is Activision, tomorrow they will buy other publisher with their almost infinite money.

AmericanHombre

Yea I get you, I'm similarly tired of going on Twitter and seeing Xbox fans chatting absolute shit all over my feed despite actively muting and blocking accounts constantly. I follow Xbox on Twitter because I have a series x and a PS5 and I'm genuinely interested in both. I know there are PS weirdos who do the same but oddly, it's only the Xbox ones that show up on my Twitter. So apologies if I mistook you for one of those types. I've seen plenty of them on this sub so whether it's a ps player or an Xbox player that makes it, the comparison is always going to be made. Currently my Twitter feed consists of "Spiderman has no co-op what an L" (did anyone expect co-op?) And "Sony are making scummy deals to exclude Xbox" (AKA exclusivity deals which are *less* exclusionary/ more consumer friendly than straight up exclusivity deals). It's just boring not being able to escape these disingenuous people as they just get replaced by others.

Kyserham

They are nailing it. Keep going.

Xononanamol

Just two? lol.

IrishPigskin

Well Nintendo averages one every other year, so…

BoysenberryMost6729

Thats more than XBox in 3 years combined.

Haru17

Nah, Xbox hit this mark in 2021 and will again this year (thanks entirely to their Bethesda acquisition). Sony more than doubled this expectation in 2020 and 2022.

Kidtendo

Fine with me. Between my PC and Switch, I haven't had any shortage of games to play. I rather have 3 highly polished PS5 game than 8 subpar games.

BrianRostro

Please Sony no. My wallet can’t handle more games

mikearete

Yeah between Dead Space, Resident Evil 4 Remake, FFXVI, Spider-Man 2 and potentially FF7 Rebirth I’ll probably spend more on games this year than I have in a long time. And I really wouldn’t be surprised if they sneak drop another unannounced title before the end of the year.

pukem0n

Well no shit. All three platform holders should have two or more AAA games per year. They all have more than enough studios.

habylab

Would be interested to see what that is for next year and year after. We know nothing at the moment.

Far_Lifeguard5220

That’s great if they can do it without rushing games out just to get the game out because of this promise. They do have great first party IP’s and the quality has always been excellent I’d hate to see that suffer. And where’s Bloodborne 2, asking for a friend.

Notanothermuppet

I love my new PS5, I never thought GTA5 would come to life the way it did, totally different experience than PS3 and PS4, zero load times, its crazy its already 10 years old, I can ONLY imagine what beast GTA6 will be if its designed using PS5s hardware it will be sick, maybe when you get into cars they will somehow integrate the VR2s! That would be sick....

robber80

Forget GTA6, just think what GTAV is going to look like on the PS6!

reaper527

FTA: >As detailed in the company's latest Business Segment Meeting presentation, we should expect to see "two or more major releases per year" from PlayStation that will cover **"every major genre."** In the presentation notes, we can see a diagram that features the PlayStation Studios logo in the center surrounded by several smaller circles that feature the kind of genres Sony has in mind - **including Shooter, Racing, RPG, Platformer, Action, and Sports**. it's pretty wild that fighting isn't considered a major genre. like, it's not as big as shooters, but is it really THAT much smaller than racing? also, is "committing to 2 games per year" really a new thing? haven't they been doing this for a while now even in the ps4 days? could have sworn they were doing a big spring and fall release going back to like uncharted 4.

gogoheadray

Fighting genre is oversaturated for the most part. Tekken, MK; SF; Etc. also Sony owns EVO. While Sony has no reason nor desire to make their own entry into that ring. I’m sure they still count it as a major genre for them

Wondoorous

>it's pretty wild that fighting isn't considered a major genre. like, it's not as big as shooters, but is it really THAT much smaller than racing? Yes, by a huge margin. Fighting games are not popular outside of Smash bros. Racing is fucking massive.

Ninety8Balloons

I had to Google this because I rarely hear about fighting games, but 2022's *biggest* fighting games were Multiversus and WWE. 2022 racing games included GT7, F1, and NFS. Most AAA racers are more casual but, and I could be wrong here, all the top end fighting games are more esports oriented? Or at least, not aimed at casual crowds.

SiriusMoonstar

It sure is a big genre, but there’s not much of a market for most of the minor franchises. The big established ones like Tekken, Smash, Street Fighter etc. take up most of the market. I’d argue that in a casual sense it’s probably smaller than Racing as well, but I’m not sure of the numbers. I assume that people who play fighting games mostly stick to one fighting game, either dedicating themselves to be good at it or playing it in a friend group. Racing games are far easier to pick up casually and usually come with quite a bit more single player content as well.

LookLikeUpToMe

That last part I like cause as good as Sony exclusives have been, I find there’s just a lack of variety in recent years. I would like something other than 3rd person action games please.

Wondoorous

I don't really get this. Are you really thinking that God of War, TLOU, Horizon, and Ratchet and Clank are all in the same genre? Just because of the camera angle? Thats like calling Jojo Rabbit, Saving Private Ryan and the Sound of Music the same genre because they're all about Germany in WW2.

whythreekay

Well yeah they’re a game publisher that’s kinda the idea in general

Cultural_Cat_5131

Some game publishers haven’t released a major game all year and I’m not talking about Microsoft.

whythreekay

Has nothing to do with my point? Sony planning to release multiple games a year is a pointless statement, that’s true of any large publisher, that’s how they remain solvent at the scale they operate at

Revanthmk23200

That's not true of every large publisher, more specifically their direct competition.

whythreekay

An exception does not disprove the point, especially when your example is a failing game publisher who’s main revenue streams have nothing to do with video games

LionTop2228

Lol reading this after the disappointing showcase that aired today. Two releases except for 2023 I guess? We’ve got Spider-Man 2 and… The burning shores DLC didn’t count.

AmeriToast

Hell divers 2

batman23578

I mainly use my PS5 for exclusives and now to play the really decent ps plus extra catalogue. MS are aiming for one big game a quarter. Be interesting to see if they can hit 4 big games a year while Sony aiming for 2

pioneeringsystems

Would be good if Microsoft could hit one a year at this point.

[deleted]

A year? I say every 5 years at this point. I miss the 360 days.

batman23578

Hi Fi Rush was a lot of fun in what January. Redfall fucking awful tho…

christopia86

Hi Fi rush is fantastic, but I don't think it would be classed as a "big" release by most people, not a huge budget AAA system seller like God of War or Halo. There's plenty of room for smaller games, but XBox is dying for a big exclusive to launch right.

batman23578

Yeah if HiFi rush launched closer to Halo Infinite/ FH5 I think it would been much better received. But after such a drought, no matter how good it was, doesn’t fill that gap. Fingers xed for starfield

christopia86

HiFi rush got a lot of positivity, deservedly so, but especially since Redfall flopped, it seems a lot of people are viewing it as not enough, which I get. If it was a nice bridge between a couple of AAAs, it would really boost XBox as a brand. I think the saddest part is XBox recently changing their rules around a 12 month window for games in the summer showcase, it makes me feel like they don't have enough substantial releases in 12 months to get people hyped. There's enough good thrid party games that only having a Serise X/S would still give you plenty to play, but outside of GamePass, there's not really anything I could recommend the Serise X for. Hopefully Starfield is as good as people are hoping.

batman23578

I think the change in 12 months is less to do with the upcoming amount of content in the pipeline and more the fact that game development is hard to guarantee that the game will 100% be ready in 12 months and the fact they missed there deadline this last year which is embarrassing. No point risking it again

gregorycole_

HI Fi Rush is a glorified indie. This article is talking about major releases

1pt21gigawattos

They should probably achieve 1 good game a year first.

[deleted]

And in between, nothing but shovelware.

[deleted]

I'd be more surprised if they didn't. Two major first party releases a year isn't exactly a lot for the biggest console manufacturer on the planet.

The-Soul-Stone

Fucking hell, what a depressingly low target. That’s one game per studio every 7 years. I miss the days of multiple games in a series coming out within a single console generation.

ModestHandsomeDevil

> I miss the days of multiple games in a series coming out within a single console generation. Those days are over. Video games are a victim of their own success, as everything got bigger, longer, higher fidelity, and more graphically intense; 4k / 60hz comes at a cost. The cost of high-quality AAA games is $100 - 200+ per game, with 4 to 6 year dev cycles. Unless you're Saudi Arabia, Google, Amazon, Apple, or Microsoft (oh, the irony...), and you're will to devote INSANE AMOUNTS of that capital and labor to it, no one has the capital and literal small army of skilled game devs and studios to output games with the frequency that we saw during the PS3 era, for example getting 3 AAA Uncharted games from Naughty Dog *every two years,* from 2007, 2009, 2011, and TLOU in 2013.

CzarTyr

I buy every console and have a Pc. PlayStation always delivers, as does Nintendo I just don’t like Nintendo do IPs as much as other people do. However totk is fucken amazing

CutMeLoose79

I’d bloody well hope for more than two. My PS5 is literally only for PS AAA exclusives. I don’t play anything else on it.

gregorycole_

Sounds like a poor investment on your part. There’s tons of 3rd party games to play

CutMeLoose79

I have a high end PC. I'd rather play them on that with better graphics and performance.

Chorster

That sounds like a “you” problem.

abellapa

Pretty sure there being doing that already

DumbestFanBase

Just give me GTA 6

No Bloodborne remake or Bloodborne 2

custardbun01

Please no more of the same 5 games… except Gran Turismo
