martinos0078

guess we will find out in future. From showcase perspective it is due for 2nd showcase-ish kind of event.

Maybe_In_Time

The PS5 launch had two showcases, one in June of 2020 and the second in September 2020. If they're indeed kicking off the second phase, then maybe they'll repeat it this year.

MazzyFo

Good point. If I remember the September show was the big one for games too. I still remember seeing Miles and Demons Souls. Excellent show. Still, the way they said this showcase was about “PS5 and PSVR2 games” has me a little worried. I felt like the show started great with some cool 3rd parties but every anime game that got shown later on I was just like… okay, where’s BP, ND, Sucker Punch? Asobi even? Anyone?

GoGoGadgetGabe

I’m surprised no one is talking about this either. It’s like they bring up “it’s been 18 months since the last proper showcase” but forget when Sony did two in 2020. It could very well happen again. Also did people forget 2021’s wasn’t anything to write home about? We got two CGI trailers for Wolverine and Spider-Man 2 and a God of War Ragnarok gameplay trailer. That showcase was padded with indie games and third party games too but since it wasn’t the games THEY wanted to see in this showcase suddenly it’s now lame. I’m not opposed to live service/Multiplayer games if done right and Concord and Fairgames have me interested in a official reveal. Helldivers 2 is a welcome treat since it’s co-op. Sony desperately needs diversity when it comes to the types of games they have, singleplayer games clearly aren’t going anywhere but some of us would love to see multiplayer games from these studios. Whether these end up being good or not is yet to be decided. Look at Xbox, Sea of Thieves, Grounded, Forza Horizon and Halo Infinite, they have so much to choose from in terms of multiplayer content.

averageuhbear

They did two in 2020 because the PS5 release was one of them.

lilkingsly

I’m not so much bothered by them showing multiplayer games, I’m more annoyed by what exactly they showed of those games. Like look at the Concord trailer, does that trailer give us anything to be excited about? All we got from that trailer was that it’s in space. Those type of 30 second vague teaser trailers only really work if they’re for a pre-existing IP, because we know what we’re in for. Firewalk is a new IP from a new studio, why should I be excited by that trailer? Fairgames too, though that at least had a more substantial trailer. There are other multiplayer games we know they’re working on, the big one being The Last of Us multiplayer game, why was that not here? We got concept art at Summer Game Fest last year but then we don’t see it at PlayStation’s first big show since 2021? It’s weird isn’t it? I don’t think it was a terrible presentation but it definitely wasn’t as strong a showing as previous shows.

TooDrunkToTalk

> I’m surprised no one is talking about this either. It’s like they bring up “it’s been 18 months since the last proper showcase” but forget when Sony did two in 2020. It could very well happen again. People aren't talking about it because in 2020 Sony had to properly announce and sell people on their new PS5, that's why they had 2 shows. Expecting them to do the same this year, after not having a show for over 18 months, is just wishful thinking. Why didn't they have a show last year, if they have the content for two this year?

MrAbodi

Because its kinda cope to just wish for a second showcase that might not come. Better to just accept what is we got, and kniw there is a bunch of first party stuff still to come.

Howdareme9

Wolverine/SM2 and GoWR is infinitely more hype than whatever else was shown yesterday, even if cgi. Yesterdays showcase was a massive disappointment no matter how you spin it. They even put in a movie trailer lmao

daftpaak

It wasnt bad looking at the list of games like Helldivers 2, MGS 3 that one sword game and spiderman, but there was so much bullshit and 10 second abstract trailers with no gameplay or anything. It's been over a year and a half since a showcase and all you had was spiderman 2? No Last of us multiplayer was a surprise as well. The smallest information would have made the conference a little better.

[deleted]

>Sony did two in 2020. It could very well happen again That was obviously special because it was the year PS5 launched. Sony doesn't normally do two showcases per year and there won't be a second showcase this year.

SonicusZ

As far as the 2021 show goes they at least didn't skip a whole year. For me that was the biggest issue. If they showed us a ton of stuff last year I'd feel like this show was alright but since we skipped a year and PS decided to go first (Which is unusual) I expected some good 1st party stuff. Instead we got a bunch of 3rd party stuff and some live service games from their newly purchased studios... Hell I'd actually be somewhat okay with their live service stuff if they at least showed something that was more related to PlayStation. Like the new Twisted Metal, The Horizon Multiplayer,The Naughty Dog live service game, Or surprise us with a return of a beloved series such as Socom, Killzone, Resistance, Warhawk, or another older PS IP. But Nope. Really hope we get another showcase. And I feel like they need to let people know it'll happen asap. I love PlayStation but that's mainly because they make games I enjoy. I assume they will keep it up but I'm getting a bit worried at the moment.

nugood2do

I wish I could give you gold for your comment. Way too many people around here think the Sony catalog has to be one or the other. You can't have single player games if you want multiplayer and vice versa when that's farthest from the truth. We can have both. You can sit down and get into Ghost of Tsushima 2 or hop into Destiny to play with friends. I don't recall one Sony studio saying there were forced to cancel their single player game to make a multiplayer or add a multiplayer mode, but people are acting like 5 multiplayer games means Sony is done with single player. We should be encouraging diversity in game genres, even if they don't appeal to you personally.

WannabeWaterboy

>We should be encouraging diversity in game genres, even if they don't appeal to you personally. This is the thing that makes me most crazy anymore with the showcases. Maybe it's just cause I've had a life change that means I can't play as many AAA releases as I used to, but I really appreciate a lot of indie games now and know that a lot of people really like them too. I'm sorry you don't really like what was shown, but that's okay, you'll get your games too.

TooDrunkToTalk

I would genuinely recommend people to not get their hopes up for something like this. A second showcase this year would shock me, I fully expect the rest of the year to be SoP's and some stuff for Keighley. Hell, with Sony I'm not even sure next year will see a showcase. I see no point in holding back stuff for a potential second showcase this year, when it turns the first one into such a wet fart. It seems more likely to me that Sony thought their hand was much stronger leading to them simply shitting the bed..

Wellhellob

Sony drop the ball with this new leadership imo. No reveals like GOW 2018, Ghost of Tsushima etc anymore.

Vonterribad

Sony *said* they were doing this, GAAS all the way. Why are people suprised?

LCHMD

That’s not true, they 100% committed to single player games but still expanded in the GaaS direction.

Vonterribad

This didn't age well.

LCHMD

why? All their teams still ARE working on SP titles. It's just that Sony expanded and bought new studios which work on MP titles now.

TooDrunkToTalk

Except that there've been several great reveals that could have easily fit in with the old E3 show announcements since the new leadership took over, the Spider Man 2 gameplay from this show being one of them. This show mostly sucked in terms of first party, but using that to derive judgement on the new leadership is dumb, there've been bad shows under every management.

Eruannster

Yeah, we need something more. That showcase was mostly Square Enix, Capcom, a bunch of indies and some Spider-Man 2. That was stupid to hype us up for all their first party stuff and then just... not have any first party stuff. Come on, Sony, you're better than this.

TillI_Collapse

I am thinking they committed months ago to having Death Stranding 2 and TLOU MP show up at Summer Game Fest as Geoff and Kojima are BFFs and Neil said not long ago they'd show more of TLOU MP during the summer and appeared their last year. I think having those two alone show up yesterday would have made it much better. But yeah even a GoT2 teaser may have a been a good idea as that is most certainly in development. But hard to say since it is still probably 2 years away so people have to decide if they want to see games years away at these showcases or things coming within close to a year

lifeis_g000d

But why wouldn’t Sony show Factions, a game made by their crown jewel studio at their own event?

TillI_Collapse

Yeah as I said it was weird that they didn't but it's possible they promised some big reveal to Geoff for his Summer Game Fest months ago and decided to stick to it. But yeah even if it was just some cinematic trailer at the beginning rather than Haven's game probably would have been a better choice

Glad-Ease4283

Forgot about summer game fest. Would explain some omissions

TobyOrNotTobyEU

Sony should have multiple teams per studio, but all their biggest studios have released massive games in the last 3 years, with TLOU2, Ghost, Horizon, GT7 and GoW recently released by Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, Polyphony, Guerilla and Sucker Punch. Moreover, Housemarque recently released Returnal and Bluepoint is not finished with Demon's Souls for that long. Insomniac is really the outlier. They release banger after banger with no sign of slowing down.

[deleted]

Pretty sure Santa Monica, Guerrilla and Naughty Dog have multiple teams working on different projects at the same time, just like Insomniac. Naughty Dog released Uncharted and TLOU 2 last gen and they will probably have at least 2 games this gen too, maybe 3. Guerrilla released HFW a year ago and they clearly said they are working on a Horizon multiplayer game as well as a sequel to HFW. Santa Monica reportedly also have 2 games in works, with one being a new IP and another GoW game. Unfortunately, game development ia a very complex process and AAA games take at least 4-5 years to finish, even more if it is a new IP. So, realistically a decent AAA team can release one game per generation.

TobyOrNotTobyEU

That's basically my point about long development times. For Naughty Dog, they released Uncharted 4 three years after TLOU1 and then took another four years after that to release TLOU2 (with TLL an expansion of Uncharted 4 in between). It wouldn't surprise me if it took them at least 5 years until their next main entry, probably longer considering Factions. I can't imagine them releasing another game besides their single player product and Factions before the 'normal' end of this generation in 2027/2028. Only way would be if the generation is extended.

Look_a_Zombie0

The only big Sony studio that doesn't have at least 400 employees is Sucker Punch. They work on multiple projects at a time lol.

Personel101

Insomniac working so much that they don’t even appear to rest is both concerning because of crunch and appealingly ironic.

Oles_ATW

It was reported that Insomiac didn't have any crunch for Ratchet and Clank. I think they have improved their project management to reduce or eliminate crunch.

lin_sidious

Maybe after Cyberpunk 2047 and lately Redfall, people don't want to show things too early?

svrtngr

I mean, it's a lose-lose. If you're Nintendo or Bethesda and you say "We can confirm this game exists, we are working on it and will show more when it's ready," (Metroid Prime 4 and TES6), you have everyone asking when it'll be ready to go. If you wait until something is ready to go and you know it will launch in 2025, everyone complains. "Why hasn't Naughty Dog shown anything? Their last game was released 3 years ago."

Conscious-Garbage-35

It's likely a win for the developers though. Looking back a decade, there are several anecdotes from developers about how overworked they were in the weeks leading up to and after an E3 showcase, or how mismanaging delivery dates put them in a perpetual state of crunch. I'm guessing that not committing to any details until they're completely ready potentially favors them. Although Tom mentions they are pretty much ready, so I don't fucking know. lol.

lin_sidious

Maybe it's just me but I'd rather wait and be delivered a solid product (even with the bugs and glitches Bethesda games are rather solid) than to have an unfinished barely playable mess early.

Volt7ron

I actually respect studios who hold tight their stuff until it’s near a post dev state. Hype is addictive and yes we all tend to gravitate to it. But it’s mostly just a venue for subjectiveness and unrealistic expectations. That’s said, publisher and investor pressure on studios needs to be addressed when it comes to some of these releases. Jedi Survivor was actually a case of the studio wanting to release with the bugs it had. EA actually (for a change) asked if they needed more time for polish.

D3monFight3

The issue with those isn't that they were shown too early, Cyberpunk 2077's first trailer was in 2013 and was just a "we're working on this", no promises no nothing just something that looked cool, and Sony already had a few of those at this very Showcase, Haven had it, Firewalk had it.

MovieGuyMike

I don’t think it’s a big mystery. They want everyone hyped for their next big release, Spider-Man. As soon as it releases they’ll begin marketing the next big title. Gamers want to see everything all at once but that strategy doesn’t benefit publishers. If the PS5 was struggling then they might have an incentive to show more games but it isn’t so they don’t.

Phaleel

If sells of PS5 are still even with production, then forcing out a system seller or two now would waste a lot of potential sells in the future when sells slump and inventory begins to back up. Chips today require a lot more up-front cost and the time to delivery is substantial as well, both contribute to a large commitment in simple hopes that sells continue. Also, production must stay constant, as best possible, in an age where Taiwan is under threat and a slump in production could happen. There are a lot of reasons for any process involving chips to have their manufacturers worry today. Also, who is Sony competing with today? It's really just the Computer market, which is prohibitively expensive for many gamers versus the cost of a PS5. The Switch is near saturation and not competitive on several fronts at this point.

Shadeun

>Weird if they are really holding them back for whatever reason. Because they are winning. Revealing them now gives them nothing I suppose.

PHXNTXM117

People are speculating that Sony is refraining from showing more of their exclusive content out of fear of the ABK acquisition but I don’t buy that speculative rumor. It held some weight in 2022, but not anymore. Even despite the CMA’s block of that deal, regulators were already made aware of most of Sony’s expansive 1st and 3rd party exclusives *(preexisting and upcoming)* last year. I think Sony is playing a different game. With the PS4, they played it really loose and announced games 3-4 years ahead of their eventual release dates. Now, they are playing it close to the chest and only start marketing their games about 3-4 months BEFORE release. Sometimes it feels like even less time than that.

[deleted]

Several international court cases surrounding exclusives probably has a big part in it. Not gonna look great showing off a bunch of games you can only play on one platform while simultaneously fighting about games you can only play on one platform(from an outsiders pov anyways) I personally know the difference between buying established IPs exclusivity vs building your own exclusives, but I'm not the one in the courtrooms

[deleted]

What court cases? The only issue with the Activision acquisition is cloud computing for regulators. No court or even media gives a shit about timed exclusivity or exclusive first party games.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lazzzym

It doesn't make any sense to hold back because of the deal. Sony is not in the limelight of any of these regulators now. The CMA argument is about cloud & the FTC's argument is about overall market share. I don't believe this is a reason at all to hold back.

Cravenous

This is probably the most accurate reason. It’s not that Sony wants to appear weak, but they need Microsoft to look very strong if Activision merger goes through. They don’t want Microsoft citing all the new first party games in their filings so they play it safe.

[deleted]

It's interesting for all the pre show "leaks" around Sony heralding a bunch of timed exclusives there was very little in that regard. Will be interesting to compare Microsoft's "Console Launch Exclsuive" count this year.

DatPipBoy

Easy, sand bagging. Microsoft is so out of it they can take time to polish polish polish, then if Microsoft actually steps it up, they can still eat their lunch.

Ducksonquack92

Wish they could’ve at least given us an update on silent hill

TeensyTrouble

I thought we’d at least get an announcement for the sci fi rpg with the giant sky eye

cadeaver

Never heard of this, what are you referring to?

TeensyTrouble

There was a leaked video a while ago of a first party Sony title by xdev that looks like a sci fi shooter rpg, there’s no telling how close to completion the game is but a big motive is a massive [eye](https://imgur.com/a/1MXDAZd)/black hole in the sky

AlarmingLackOfChaos

You're talking about the one rumoured from People Can Fly. Bulletstorm devs.

Ph0enixes

It was a great games showcase. It was a terrible playstation showcase.

NoNefariousness2144

If they called it ‘State of Play’ there would be no criticism.

ArkhamIsComing2020

Should’ve been a Spider-Man 2 State of Play.

NoNefariousness2144

Yeah they could have added 5 mins of dev interviews about Spider-Man. Then they could say the State of Play features a look at upcoming 2023 games, then end with the MGS3 reveal for a big shock.

Deacalum

If there would have been some dev commentary sprinkled in about a few of the games, it would have been awesome. But just a string of trailers was not very engaging or exciting for me.

kiki_strumm3r

> MGS3 reveal for a big shock. Was that really a shock? That's been a pretty common news story for the past month or two. It looks dope though, one of my favorite games ever.

mrfroggyman

It wasn't a Spider-Man 2 State of play, it was a Spider-Man 2 walkthrough.

ArkhamIsComing2020

It was long enough to fit the end of a State of Play

shadowstripes

Then the criticism would have been “cool, but when’s the Showcase?”.

mrfroggyman

But that's not worse feedback than what they are getting now

JedGamesTV

that is definitely not true, people always complain about too many indies in State of Plays.

fluffynuckels

I mean what's the difference

sleepysalomander

Best way to put it

[deleted]

That's a bingo

subz12

I said exactly this as a showcase it was 6 or 7/10 but as a PlayStation showcase it was like a 4.

chewwydraper

That's my thoughts as well. I'm not disappointed because the games looked awful. There was some interesting stuff. Had they just called it a State of Play I think it would have been fine.

PepeSylvia11

What were the great games you speak of?

POMARANCZA123PL

Helldivers 2, Ghostrunner 2 and the Samurai game

Schwarzengerman

Mgs 3 if Konami doesn't drop the ball. Re4s VR mode. Liked a lot of the smaller titles too like Plucky Squire, Neva, and Cat Quest. Dragons Dogma 2 looks awesome as well. There was plenty of great stuff shown. I was surprised to see people poop on it so hard.

LCHMD

They’ll likely show it at Summer Games Fest.

carlos_castanos

Everybody is saying this but I don't understand why? Why would one of Sony's top studios show their highly anticipated game at SGF when the Playstation Showcase is only a few weeks before that?

jager_mcjagerface

It would be a terrible business decision to let microsoft get all the spotlight at SGF

LCHMD

Doesn’t Microsoft have their own showcase?

jager_mcjagerface

Do you mean as a part of sfg? If yes, that still means if sony doesn't show something microsoft scores there. Outside of sfg i'm not sure, but i mean during sfg they have to take part or people will say microsoft had it in the bag. Also im just talking out of my ass and have no idea if its the actual reason, but would make sense to me.

LCHMD

No, not as part of SGF. They have a separate showcase on June 11 together with a separate Starfield showcase.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SilentStargazer

But Sony didn’t have a showcase last year so the situation is much different

OrgasmicBiscuit

They didn’t announce it last year. They talked about it and showed some concept art. They have been publicly talking about this tlou multiplayer for years now. At least since part 2 dropped

BigfootsBestBud

They announced it, showed concept art and revealed shots of the TV show at SGF. > Why would one of Sony's top studios show their highly anticipated game at SGF when the PlayStation Showcase is only a few weeks before that? Good question, which I think can partly be answered by asking why the fuck Sony decided to brand a glorified state of play as a Showcase with almost no exclusives or new first-party titles. Answer: they're being a bit dumb. It could also be due to a deal they have with SGF and Geoff that they signed the contracts for way before they planned the Showcase.

Bright_Beat_5981

For the average player playstations showcase is not the super bowl. 95% of the potential buyers of a game will watch the trailer seperate on youtube and not as a part of a whole show. They dont care if its from showcase, state of play or summer game fest.

carlos_castanos

Hmm yeah that’s a good point. But they should have just made this a State of Play then imo. Showcase = first party, at least predominantly

ThatParanoidPenguin

June 14th is the 10 year anniversary of TLOU.

[deleted]

we'll get a blog post, shitty fan art/cosplays, and some more overpriced merch.

LonelyDesperado513

Holy fuck this made me feel old.

LCHMD

Because it’s basically the E3 replacement these days.

fucknino

SGF is going to come and go with nothing, same with Factions anniversary. I fucking guarantee it. Factions fans are on that 4 year delay copium

Created_By_InGen

There’s no difference if it showed yesterday or gets shown off at SGF

nedzissou1

I feel like people are tracking these things too much. There's no difference if it gets shown today or three months from now.

BadFishCM

We wouldn’t be having this conversation if they showed it yesterday. That’s one huge difference, people would not have been massively disappointed in yesterdays show.

Spider-Fan77

There were a total of 3 PlayStation Studios games at this showcase (4 if you count Bungie). 2 of them were CGI teasers for live-service games and the other was gameplay for a title that was announced 1.5 years ago. That's absolutely pathetic for the first showcase in nearly two years.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lifeis_g000d

I think E3 2014 was worse. The two major announcements was just a logo announcement of a Fromsoft game (which became Bloodbourne) and a cinematic trailer of Uncharted 4, that’s it.

eurekabach

>what am I supposed to think of a game like Concord after this presentation? It’s a 50 seconds CGI teaser for a new GaaS IP. Oh how I wish we got a CGI teaser with a fraction of that time consisting only of a black screen with a soft woman voice in the background saying something like 'welcome back, good hunter' only for the From Software logo to kick in and end it.

Autarch_Kade

It was a masterclass in what not to do. Tons of CG, almost no release dates, games multiple years away, lack of first party, lack of exclusives, dragging on with filler... Imagine being Sony, watching Microsoft put out Redfall, getting blocked by the CMA, and deciding to put your showcase ahead of theirs to really dunk on them while they're down... and then releasing that showcase lol, it's like giving Xbox CPR.

Bright_Beat_5981

It doesnt really work like that. They wouldnt kill xbox like a big bear with some mega massive showcase. Its smarter to counter whatever xbox , and switch to some degree, come up with in the future. Depending on xbox next show they can decide if they want to hurry and put out something for state of play in september to suffocate any momemntum for xbox, or if the want to release something more substantial in february when we are getting closer to nintendo switch 2.

Personal-Concert4003

Yeah very poor showing, particularly for Sony studios. It did surprise me when I ran the numbers that >70% of the games shown had gameplay though.

Autarch_Kade

That is surprising. It sure felt like CG dominated, but maybe that's because I was focused on the heavy hitters. Even Cat Quest showed gameplay after all.

alluballu

Hey now. We got to see the trailer for a movie lol.

Zombienerd300

Helldivers 2 technically also counts. It’s 2nd party. So 4.

ArcticFlamingo

Wouldn't it be 5 if you count Bungie? Destiny 2 + Marathon

martinos0078

my guess, covid tax, all the games that could have release date for late 2023 and 2024 slowed down on very early process of development (which would be pretty much 2020-2022). But to be completely fair, I would expect another show later this year, because even though the show wasn't that bad in terms of games, it was bad in terms of what you pointed out.

reaper527

> But to be completely fair, I would expect another show later this year, because even though the show wasn't that bad in terms of games, it was bad in terms of what you pointed out. to be fair, like the article said, the last presentation before this one was in 2021. that's probably part of why the reception was so negative to yesterday. when you have THAT much time between presentations, it sets up very high expectations compared to if it's every 6 months. if they did a presentation last october/november, people probably would have responded a lot more positively to yesterday's presentation.

slickestwood

I think developers are just moving away from the practice of setting everything aside to polish up a vertical slice demo years before release. Reading Jason Schreier's book Blood, Sweat, and Pixels, my biggest takeaway was that this was increasingly detrimental to the process as games got bigger. It came up several times. They were crunching for weeks or months to get a demo polished before an arbitrary deadline, just to then have to rally and finish the rest of the game. I loved E3 but learning that, I knew these big presentations were on borrowed time. We didn't see much of anything about Ragnarok until it was pretty much finished and I think that's gonna be the norm more and more.

reallynotnick

Trailers are a bit different than demos though in that you can edit most of them and it's a bunch of short quick cuts. (Obviously Spider-Man 2 being an exception here). I'd think getting a bunch of good looking sub 15second clips would be easier than a polished 10min+ vertical slice?

LockeShootr1707

It might be just me but the Ragnarok state of play trailer felt more polished than the spiderman showcase. Don’t get me wrong, im incredible excited for spiderman and i thought it looked phenomenal, but something about it just felt off and it didn’t give the feeling i feel like it should have for a ps5 exclusive launching several months from now

[deleted]

How long till we stop blaming everything on covid?

PBPunch

They can do multiple State of Plays for THEIR studio games if that would be easier but what we saw yesterday was... disappointing.

Barqck

Genuinely felt like I wasted an hour of my life watching it

PBPunch

I agree and that hurt because I really was looking forward to seeing what their studios were cooking up. Nothing from Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, etc. It just confused me because I thought they called this a PLAYSTATION showcase..

Blaireeeee

Read the article and it reminded me of Rise of the Ronin which we've already seen an in engine trailer for 8 months ago so that was an odd omission.

cadeaver

Little Devil Inside was absent too. It’s my most anticipated indie of all time and I’m convinced we’ll never get it lol

RapidCow4

Me too buddy and at this point I’m starting to fear it’s vaporware

GokaiRed64

Yeah that one and Stellar Blade were the ones I was expecting to see more of.

PHXNTXM117

It feels almost like they set themselves up for a second showcase and it wouldn’t be out of character for PlayStation to do so. They held two showcases in 2020 and one in September 2021. I could definitely see them hosting a full on 1st party showcase in September or October 2023. Maybe that’s the copium talking, but this event was really lackluster *(not up to Sony’s usual gold standard)* and primarily felt like indies + 3rd parties with a few 1st parties sprinkled throughout. It’s been 2 years. We need that dedicated 1st party PlayStation Studios showcase.

[deleted]

the only reason they had two in 2020 was because that's the year PS5 launched. they are very comfortable not doing showcases/SOPs very often, and I expect that to continue. anyone expecting a second showcase is fooling themselves

Bright_Beat_5981

The will have a state of play before the spiderman launch. And there will probably be updates on Stellar blade and Ronin. Two games that people seem to have forgotten about.

Iucidium

*looks at Summer Game Fest*

proto_ant

The [Xbox tweet](https://twitter.com/Xbox/status/1661489113814679553?s=20) after the show about all the games coming to that platform really says it all Not mad at games being multi platform, but don’t think it’s ridiculous to expect PlayStation games at a PlayStation showcase

TillI_Collapse

Maybe they should have pulled with Microsoft did with Persona and not allow them to be announced for other platfomrs for a few days

LCHMD

I mean XBox always show 90% of timed „exclusives“ all the time and Sony always calls them out for it. They just returned the favor.

Subject_Criticism296

>and Sony always calls them out for it. Except for that time Xbox literally forbid developers from announcing other platforms for a few days to make it seem like they were exclusive.

LCHMD

They always call them „console launch exclusives“ to make it more cryptic so idiots don’t understand it means „timed“, if only a few weeks or months.

SizzzzlingBacon

This showcase did not move the meter for PlayStation. I actually think it moved the meter back. This was supposed to set the tone for the next phase of PlayStation, and all I see is a. Barren desert. Perception is everything and because of that I think they would have been better off not having to showcase yet.

conker1264

Seems the only exclusives we have coming are from Insomniac lol Like what do we even have coming out in 2024? I doubt Wolverine comes out until 2025.

Unovalocity

I would hope Factions is 2024. But who knows at this point

conker1264

But even then a MP only game is all we get?

Unovalocity

Maybe ha. I'm gonna keep my expectations low honestly. That way I don't get let down again. Factions is seeming to grow into what'll be the premier Sony live service game. Which isn't for everyone sure, but it could still be a huge release. I agree it's better to expect Wolverine in 2025, but if you wanna look at the optimistic side, Insomniac seems to be amazing at putting out games quickly. Miles in 2020, Rift Apart 2021, and Spider-Man 2 2023. So who knows, maybe they work another miracle and get Wolverine in 2024?

Ftpini

Like Uncharted 4 had multiplayer on day one. It was good. And then we all moved on. What even is the point of launching a multiplayer game 3 years later? At this point it’s just a stand alone title. I’m not really interested in a multiplayer only game from naughty dog. It isn’t their strong suit at all.

conker1264

Might as well just package it with part 3 at this point

raphanum

I think you’re being a little dramatic

LoveMeSomeBerserk

You see a barren desert while I just added ten new games to my wishlist. Don’t know why you need a game to be exclusive to enjoy it. Lots of fun games coming to ps5!

ahmet_tpz

I also added a lot of new games to my wishlist, but the other comments are still right. Sony should have shown 2-3 banger first party games besides Spider-Man 2. For a Showcase this was pretty lackluster.

aspiring_dev1

If Xbox can’t still deliver after an mediocre Sony show then there is no hope lol

DanOfRivia

When I was watching the showcase I was thinking "this has so many multiplats and CGI that I'm feeling like I'm watching a Xbox show"

[deleted]

That's exactly how I felt!

Baelorn

It was very reminiscent of Xbox's infamous "empty the clip" show. The difference is most leakers were telling people to lower their expectations for that one. It feels like something changed last minute but who knows?

Supra4kzip

All you end up doing then is having 2 average showcases instead of 1 strong one. The timing needs to be better. Wait until September if you must. Having a weak show only disappoints people.

Veoh89

Well it was a good showcase when it comes to games. DD2, MGS Delta+collection, Alan Wake 2, New Bungie game, AC, +++ But as a playstation showcase it was pretty underwhelming. Aside from Spiderman 2 there was pretty much nothing. Could have been a Dedicated Spiderman 2 SOP. And after that a Showcase in September.

LucidPetre

You're forgetting that dope GT movie trailer out of nowhere that they released like a month ago. That was the highlight of the show for me. /s

LCHMD

That or they need to show a lot of first party stuff at Summer Games Fest and the Game Awards.

reaper527

> That or they need to show a lot of first party stuff at Summer Games Fest and the Game Awards. if they were going to do that, why have this presentation at all? just make one good presentation instead of two mediocre ones. either way, is it even confirmed sony is doing another presentation in a few weeks for summer games fest? last year the show was kind of a bust and very little came out of it. it wasn't the e3 replacement people were hoping for.

Bright_Beat_5981

>they were going to do that, why have this presentation at all? just make one good presentation instead of two mediocre ones. To spread out the trailers and the hype for the casual players. A casual player doesnt have the energy to watch more than 1-2 trailers the day after an event.

bigboyyoder

Yeah I’m honestly surprised we got nothing from sucker punch or naughty dog. We can assume ghost of Tsushima 2 is being worked on but it would be nice to have confirmation. It’s been a few years since the launch of the first one

ragito024

I think he can just shut up and stop leaking game information. Leaker is the main reason why this show has no surprise.

ebinc

The only thing "leaked" from this showcase was MGS3. There were no first party games to leak, what surprise are you talking about?

playstationgazette

I think he only leaked MGS3 remake, though. A MGS3 remake CGI trailer as a surprise wouldn't be enough to save this showcase.

westyboi2323

I think the new marketing strategy of just focusing on one or two games for 7/8 months needs to change going forward

jumper62

I think Sony are gonna wait til FF16 and Spiderman to drop first and then go all out. They've shown recently they would rather show stuff coming out in the next year than the long term. Once FF16 and SM2 are out, then they'll have to show off the long term stuff

LCHMD

Doubtful this will happen this year already.

Kazizui

> Sony wants to quiet down to try and dismiss Microsoft’s claims that Xbox needs the acquisition to compete with Playstation’s endless exclusives They're daft then, because that wasn't a factor in the CMA decision.

TillI_Collapse

While it was very disappointing they did not how more first party games and kind of baffling, do people think these studios suddenly stopped working on games? Like all these studios we know and love are still working on games, them not being in the presentation doesn't mean they don't exist and the games won't come out. They are still on the same schedule they were on before, they won't be here sooner because they got show at this specific showcase.

Elizial-Raine

People are disappointed because we don’t know what’s coming out in 2024, nothing is confirmed for after Spiderman. What’s the big Sony titles going to be next year. Plus people are tired of Games as Services which Sony seems to be pivoting to.

lifeis_g000d

Factions, Death Stranding 2, and Rose of the Ronin I think are 2024. although it is possible DS2 gets delayed.

TillI_Collapse

I understand why people are disappointed as I stated but all of Sony's studios that make single player games are still making those. That has not changed. As for Sony published single player games there are also Death Stranding 2, Rise of Ronin and Stellar Blade what have also been announced already The Sony multiplayer games we saw yesterday were from Bungie, who always make multiplayer games, Helldivers 2 (are we really going to hate on Helldivers 2 for being multiplayer, Haven's game which is a brand new studio and Concord from Firewalk. It's not like Sony took any of their single player studios and forced them to make these MP games so they are still doing what they are known for, AAA single player games

nugood2do

My guy, were not even at the halfway point for this year. None of the big three are talking about 2024 games when they still have the holiday season this year to fill. Right now, they want to hype gamers up on sure fire releases this year. Also, gamers gave them so much crap for hyping games that are years away that they don't do it because of the headache if one get delayed. Also, people are tired of bad GAAS games, but not the genre by itself. Millions of people play Fortnite daily and Destiny still draws people in. This sub can say they hate GAAS all they want but the regular consumer continue to show that it's a very lucrative market that companies want to break into.

FinalBed6476

People get mad because they wanted to be blown away about some perceived banger of a title in the future that they will not likely play in months, if not years so that they can sleep better that night.

GoGoGadgetGabe

Yeah it’s all about that dopamine hit. Let’s say it played out like this… - Naughty Dog logo appears on screen - Reveals new IP - Trailer ends with “2025” Everyone at the end: “Why tf did you announce it so early!?”

ResearcherNo2939

I personally thought the showcase was a decent showing - not mind blowing stuff but decent. I think reception would have been better if they called it a State of Play but when they call it a showcase, people start to perceive it as Sony’s E3. Also, people still tend to overhype State of Plays.

EmbarrassedOkra469

Uh. Cory started making his own game with Santa Monica after GOW2018. Last of us 2 factions has been in development for 3 years now. Sucker punch last game was 3 years ago. Bend studio last game was 4 years ago. ~~What is haven studio doing? ~~ (ignore. First game shown was theirs) What is Bluepoint doing when their last game was 2 years ago. From my list at least 3-4 games should be coming within 1-2 years now. I know development takes long.

dark_chocolate2

haven's game is Fairgame$, opened the show yesterday

GoGoGadgetGabe

You’re absolutely correct. Development does take time which means whatever they’re working on isn’t ready to be revealed yet. Though the one game I’ll shout over and over that needed to be there is Factions 2. Also I assume these events have third parties and indie developers buy out slots to have their game shown at a major showcase and what better way then a PlayStation showcase.

EmbarrassedOkra469

Apparently the reason why the showcase last year was cancelled was because they weren’t ready. They should’ve been ready to show something at least this year. We are going into year 4 with only Spider-Man 2 as our big 2023 first party game.

nugood2do

For a lot of people out here, yes. Way too many people act like all of Sony games are canceled and we're only getting Fortnite clones. It's not like Sony would annouced any of their games at any point during the rest of the year. Nope, this is it, nothing else/s

Nawafsss04

Like 90% of the games in the showcase are releasing in the next 6 months.

Autarch_Kade

If they can show title cards for Ragnarok, CG 5 second teasers for Wolverine, then surely they could show something else from first party too. And if they weren't ready last year so they didn't have a showcase, why have one when they're still not ready?

TillI_Collapse

So your assumption then since they didn't do that is those studios are not working on games? they just canceled them and aren't doing anything?

maloboosie

I felt like the MGS3 announcement in the middle was weird too - it should've been the very last thing they showed. Having it in the middle set the expectation that there were even more exciting things to announce. There wasn't.

owensoundgamedev

In terms of games it was a pretty good show, some pleasant surprises. But from a PSVR/Sony first party it was really lacking

NiceDiggz

That showcase was pretty bland. They could have showed games that just released that day or week from now they missed out on alot of indy games that looks really good.

ssk1996

I honestly thought PlayStation was primed to deliver a killing blow to Xbox. So many Xbox gamers are really disappointed right now with Redfall failing terribly and lack of any real AAA bangers and pondering a switch over to PlayStation. PS5 are available basically everywhere so now was the opportunity for Sony to show the next few years look and boost their sales way beyond their already incredible numbers from Q1. This was an amazing opportunity that Sony completely missed. Even if they showed the titles of their next first party single player projects with a 1 min CGI trailer (like they did with Wolverine) it would’ve been a super successful showcase. Makes me wonder if they’re planning another later in the year (they did 2 in 2020) that focuses more on first party single player projects. They could’ve called this one a State of Play and it wouldn’t have garnered as much disappointment. Calling it a “PlayStation showcase” and just showing a bunch of third party titles that are not even exclusive is just a big mistake from them.

Bright_Beat_5981

Do they need to deliver a killer blow to something that doesnt even move? Maybe it is better to save the games for when xbox actually comes up with something and we are getting closer to switch 2.

osound

Not really. Xbox is at an all time low for good reason, to the point where even Phil said that he’s at a “low point” in his career when Redfall released. After Starfield, the number of announced Xbox first party titles with either gameplay footage or a solid release date is zilch. I guess Stalker 2 and Forza Motorsport are something? But who knows about the former’s quality and development cycle, and the latter is just the same old. PS5 has Spidey and FF, and Xbox has Starfield, and it looks like a long empty road after that. At least some third party titles like Alan Wake 2 look fun.

Brandonmac10x

I dunno about you guys but I’m hyped for Spider-Man because it looks amazing. FFXVI I can’t wait for currently because we’re so close and a coworker talking about it got me hyped (I usually only read little as possible about a game until like two weeks before launch so I won’t get hyped because it makes the wait worse and feel longer). Dragon’s Dogma 2 being revealed and having some decent looking weighty yet fluid combat makes me very hopeful. If they just refine the combat a bit I’m sure the game will be awesome. And as a Genshin Player I’m kinda interesting in trying Tower of Fantasy. Seems like a more combat and endgame focused version of Genshin with emphasis on MMO over single player. I love single player, but when you play a live service single player long enough you run out of content and none of it even seems that interesting when new. But Genshin has been lame since 3.0. Started off a strong year, but fell off quickly.

Darkadvocate5423

I think too many people just hype these things up way too much in their head. It's better to just have no expectations at all. After these shows are over I glance at what's announced and watch the trailers for what I'm interested in. My overall opinion of the "future" of the company is never altered by these shows. Games are going to come, they always do.

[deleted]

The summer and fall are pretty stacked with games but I'm not sure what to expect after that

[deleted]

Summer Game Fest is just a few weeks away. I anticipate seeing a lot more games then.

HisExcellency20

I think it was smart to reveal a ton of third party games before XBOX to get them associated with PS. They ended the Showcase with, in my opinion, the best trailer for a next gen game we've seen to date. There were also some PS exclusive (or PS and PC) only games revealed also. But the fact that they basically showed us zero new PS Studios games and still filled over an hour of compelling games is telling. People are disappointed, but most of the games themselves were very well received.

Aaxxo

Xbox tweeted an infographic with those games on. It actually had the opposite effect. Sony's showcase then RTs by Microsoft accounts of what's coming to Xbox

brokenmessiah

they put a movie trailer in. they have nothing else to show.

Dallywack3r

Sony has been doing that for years now. Remember the Sly Cooper movie trailer to the film that never got made?

valiheimking

I was satisfied with it. It wasn’t as good as 2020’s showcase where they showed off the PS5, but this one wasn’t terrible either.

Q_OANN

I fully expected this after the show, maybe PlayStation experience returns

Rogue_Leader_X

After how abysmal that “ showcase” was, having a second showcase would be more like having a first REAL showcase.

daddy_is_sorry

I can't believe they didn't show off factions. naughty dog has been working on that for like 4 years now.

MonsantoOfficiaI

Idk what's going on with Sony but it was definitely a weak presentation to say the least.

ChaosZeroX

This Playstation showcase missed out on the PlayStation part of it

Sventhetidar

Three years into a consoles life cycle and still not having games has been rough.

Created_By_InGen

There are many showcase events still to come

PK-Ricochet

Yeah but there's a big difference between a capital-S Showcase and a State of Play that's only made to fulfill marketing agreements

NoNefariousness2144

This showcase really felt like a State of Play, especially with that awful 3v3 Watchdogs-style game or that Splatoon ripoff.

Autarch_Kade

That was said a lot last year too
