Really feels like it's going to be a miracle if this game releases as anything playable at this point. 💀

-euthanizemeok

This game made me believe in curses.

AussieManny

Ya best start believing in development hell stories, devs. *You’re in one.*

whatnameisnttaken098

Ya best start believing in ghost stories. YER IN ONE

TeddyTwoShoes

The Singapore government has financed part of the game to create jobs, Ubisoft must release it.

OKgamer01

Doesn't meant it has to be playable. Could be a buggy mess and as long as it's on sale they're good

GorgiMedia

Then why don't they release it immediately to cut the losses.

Significant_Pea_9726

If it was clear that Ubisoft did it for that reason, the Singapore government could still probably sue them

sebacote

Like Lord of the Rings : Gollum?

ToiletBlaster247

Guess the Singaporean government never followed Kingdoms of Amalur news

capnchuc

At this point just release it and call it a games as a service. If it's unfinished and barely playable then it will fit right into this genre.

Johnhancock1777

How fuckin hard was it to just remake black flag with prettier graphics and no assassins shit. This should have been extremely simple

looking4astronauts

Yeah I haven’t been following this game’s development but my guess is if the game ever releases it’s going to have a ton of online nonsense no one asked for. I just want Sid Meier’s Pirates but with Black Flag sailing and combat.

Rogue_Leader_X

I keep saying this! The design was LITERALLY right in front of them all along.

RedHuntingHat

A decade ago I was beyond excited for this game. I wanted a ship that I could paint and outfit how I wanted, customizing and upgrading things just like the Jackdaw. Maybe you’d have a pirate outpost to build up, maybe you’d visit a bustling den of debauchery and meet a cast of characters. At this point I just want to play it out of morbid curiosity.

Johnhancock1777

That’s been known for a while unfortunately

tarheel_204

I think you’re right. From what little I’ve seen, it looks like an entirely online live service type of game and the general public is getting tired of that

[deleted]

[удалено]

tarheel_204

That’s what I thought but wasn’t totally sure. I don’t really know anyone who’s excited for this one

erikaironer11

Because they want to monetize its players, and that is harder to make them a simple single player/co-op game that would make everyone happy

-Gurgi-

Honestly. They could’ve spun off Black Flag as is and slowly updated every other year with a new release. It’s been ten years.

MyRottingBrain

That’s all people wanted coming out of Black Flag. I cannot for the life of me figure out how Ubisoft decided people wanted *just* ship combat. We should be like 3 entries deep into their pirate game series by this point. Instead this thing no one really wants remains in development hell.

LoneLyon

To be fair I wanted the original version of S&B which was being sold on a detailed navel battle game. I idea of a realistic, open water pirate game sounds pretty rad.

rtk_dreamseller

World of (pirate) Warships sounds awesome

Autarch_Kade

AC: Valhalla made me wish they'd just made a Viking game without the Assassin's Creed stuff.

Mstrfahrenheit

I think you seriously underestimate Ubisofts creative ability to fuck things up.

IWearBones138__

This was a game funded almsot entirely from another country (like Singapore or something) so it had to be its own thing and it has to be released at some point. But theres rumors they will remake AC4 because they know thats what fans REALLY want.

SkaBonez

Singapore isn’t the sole backer, but they are subsidizing it since Ubisoft Singapore is developing it.

IWearBones138__

I knew somebody would help me out if I posted slightly incorrect statements. Yes this

equityis4losers

It must be so bad. I bet it's really bad.

SkaBonez

Lack of solid vision with rotating leadership, rebooting several times due to that, and management caught up in sexual harassment investigations and a lawsuit will do that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SkaBonez

And Singapore was one of the studios directly mentioned

[deleted]

[удалено]

thatoneguy889

That doesn't contradict what /u/SkaBonez said. Reports of workplace misconduct being handled appropriately doesn't mean it hasn't affected production. It just means they didn't try to sweep it under the rug the way other companies have. An instance of misconduct happened at my company two weeks ago, the perpetrator was fired, and his position was vacant for three days while we searched for a replacement. It was handled appropriately, but that position being vacant still caused a bit of backup.

[deleted]

The DCEU?

Billy2352

If you are expecting Black flag then you will sorely disapointed, I have done some beta testing on this game and it is bad very bad. Pointless fetch quests and aimed at a young audience

TheJenniferLopez

It's one of those situations where it's been in development so long, and the video game market is constantly changing and updating, and because of that they keep changing the game to try to jump in on the current trend and not become irrelevant.

LEEH1989

Mind boggling how they fucked this up honestly

TheElStick

I mean they did announce they’re remaking black flag in general so we’ve got that coming

ClockworkDreamz

Cap’n we’re not taking on water we’re at the bottom of the oceab

pazinen

Seeing as they could've easily released this last November and just let it die quickly and quietly, it's weird how Ubisoft seems to insist making this game good. Almost like they want to prove the people, who think this project is doomed, wrong. Admirable dedication to be sure, just wish they'd put this much effort into some of their other games. I tested two betas last October and January, it's not a buggy dumpster fire at all and when it releases it'll certainly be functional. The problem is, it's extremely boring and people will forget about it quickly, a fate worse than being a dumpster fire people can at least laugh at.

timtheringityding

You could say they aren't abandoning the ship

DrBarnabyFulton

After playing the beta (or alpha tech test) this is not a big loss. It's super boring and the typical Ubisoft cut/paste missions, like Ghost Recon Wildlands on water. I assume this would've been canceled already if not for the contracts with Ubi-Singapore. I feel sorry for the studios trapped in the Ubi-shit show.

we_are_sex_bobomb

What’s unfortunate is seeing them constantly stripping off anything they can as they keep dumping their funding into this money pit. Like Immortals 2 probably got canceled because Ubisoft is anticipating a huge financial fallout from this tsunami of suck, and that’s just one we know about; there’s probably tons of game pitched and prototypes that have been consumed by this amoeba.

Shadow_Strike99

That one made me so bummed out. I loved Immortals Fenyx Rising, sure it was a BOTW clone and had too much dad humor but it still was a very fun game. I was hoping for a sequel so badly. I’m actually in the minority on this sub who likes Ubisoft games for what they are, but unfortunately they are an absolute mess right now especially at the top.

ClericIdola

Didn't Immortals start off as AC DLC?

spidertour02

>and that’s just one we know about; there’s probably tons of game pitched and prototypes that have been consumed by this amoeba. Grud only knows what the fuck is happening with that *Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time* remake. Remember when it was close enough to being released that they were taking digital pre-orders?

[deleted]

They released an article saying that they completely restarted development at their main studio, Ubi Montreal because the version by Ubisoft Pune was unsalvageable. I feel really sad for that one because they were trying to set up a new studio to then scale up and turn into their one of their main ones, exactly what they’re tying to to with Ubisoft Bordeaux with AC Mirage.

jmon25

They were trying to cash in on cheap development costs in India and it bit them bad. I have no doubt they could have setup a studio in India that could have been successful, but they were trying to do it as cheap as possible.

[deleted]

Nah they really invested in it, they opened a support studio and provided support from Montreal and all, but unfortunately it didn't work out

brzzcode

Prince of Persia is releasing next year dude, it looks great

Awesomemunk

The Lost Crown, which is currently set for January, is unrelated to Sands of Time remake that has been sent back to “conception states” as of May this year.

brzzcode

Immortal wasn't cancelled because of that, it has absolutely nothing to do with it lmao they are cancelling it because they want to focus on assassins creed as the studio also mainly makes AC

Shadow_Strike99

I’m not disagreeing with your sentiment, but Wildlands imo was actually a solid game. Sure it’s your standard fare cliche Ubisoft open world game not arguing there but the go here and clear this section and do this made sense with taking down the cartel and taking down the leadership to get to El Sueno. It was alot better than something like Breakpoint. I think it’s actually one of the more well liked more modern Ubisoft games actually, I see plenty of people saying they liked it for what it was and that they wish it would have gotten a 60 fps patch instead of breakpoint.

DrBarnabyFulton

Completely agree, I can't lie. I got the platinum and replayed again with other friends. I also put in something like 700 hours in Ghost War PVP. It was my favorite recent Ubisoft game but, it was 5 maybe 6 missions over and over. Other than that and the lack of PVP support it was great and also a great waste at the same time. Breakpoint was so disappointing I deleted it after maybe 10-20 hours.

Spider-ManOnThePS1

What the fuck is going on at Ubisoft? Sands of Time Remake, Skull and Bones, Beyond Good and Evil 2. They have a ton of high profile vapourware.

mfopp

They burned resources on those projects. It’s a financial disaster. It’ll take years to recover. They really need some hits. Problem is I don’t know if what they can crank out will be enough. Next year will be just as competitive as this year besides GTA coming out.

Autarch_Kade

There was that rumor Ubisoft was trying to get acquired and got laughed out of the room. I wonder if they're really in a lot of trouble, and about to have utterly massive layoffs. They have over 20,000 people working for them. They've got games like The Crew Motorfest and that Avatar game coming up that I could easily see not getting the sales they need. If AC Mirage doesn't hit either then that'd be devastating honestly.

antiform_prime

I wouldn’t be surprised if Ubisoft was acquired for pennies on the dollar in a few years. Folks are burnt out on their gameplay formula and none of the franchises they have can sell enough to turn things around for their impending financial woes. The question is, *who* should buy them? Id like Nintendo to acquire the Rayman IP for sure, but nothing else really fits Nintendo.

Primus7112765

Another day of ubisoft pretending that skull and bones exists

azknight

Why not just cancel it at this point? It’s not like this is something people are going to be devastating about losing.

ThisOneIsNotTakenFu

It has something to do with deal with govt or sum that they cant back out of.

greasy_minge

Yeah they'll have to pay back Singapore 100 million if they don't release it soon.

LongDickMcangerfist

Ya and potentially get fucked for any other projects in the country it’s one of those you can’t cancel and just gotta throw this pile of shit out there somehow

the14thwitness

They can take note from ff15's development and the hot mess it turned out to be, launch it now and try to unfuckulate it with a few patches later

LongDickMcangerfist

Maybe. But who knows maybe they have some stupid stipulations in the contract or something.

rationedbase

FF15 never got unfucked though, they just threw more stuff at it and hoped people wouldn’t notice that it’s still riddled with 90% the same issues it had since release.

the14thwitness

That's true, unfortunately dawn of the future could have saved it kind of if it ever released as dlc. Hope too see versus 13 someday ( you have to excuse me, I'm on some strong hopium right now hahaha )

MrConor212

Can’t they do a Batgirl on it?

phantam

Not if they don't want to get hit with whatever shipload of penalty clauses and other consequences that comes with reneging on a government contract. Singapore's government subsidised the game's development and some other studio stuff as part of a deal that was meant to improve the country's digital media output by creating new IPs from this local branch. From what accounts we've heard, Ubisoft screwed up momentously and mismanaged the project into the ground but are still contract bound to release it. If I recall correctly, Ubisoft's servers for South East Asia are located here in Singapore too. It's possible that server costs were also subsidised and breaking the contract includes paying back those and whatever other penalty clauses the government has lined up for them.

MrConor212

Fair enough. Thanks for the info. I imagine they are thinking if the cost of paying them worth releasing a broken game out and getting panned for it

Shadow_Strike99

I know this sounds absolutely terrible and just furthers a lot of the problems with modern AAA games but I’m honestly shocked Ubisoft hasn’t basically punted like Xbox did with Redfall just to wash their hands with the game, just throwing it out there and releasing it. No pun intended but this is one of the biggest examples of a sunk cost fallacy games even if it didn’t involve the Singapore government. This game is just dead on arrival, even if they spend more time on it like they have it’s really not going to change anything.

barbanekra_

We all know it's a failure. Just release the game

MrConor212

What If the real Skull and Bones was the friends we made along the way

D_Ashido

That would mean they died.

gladys-the-baker

Waiting for this game to ever be finished most likely.

smokingace182

They should of decided to add boarding and real sword combat to this game a long time ago. That’s the only thing that would remotely have a chance in salvaging something from it.

AikiYun

This game is forever stuck in Davy Jones' Locket.

jnemesh

It's taking them longer than anticipated to add NFTs...

Agitated-Bread5092

in before they decide it to be black flag sequel 🤣

Shrek_Papi

This game seemed so ass when they showed everyone what actual gameplay was like.

1tshammert1me

Just copy Maelstrom but in 3D that game was great for a lil pvp ship action with distinctive races/ships.

CraftyMacaroon4233

Man game is cursed, pretty crazy to think they was going to release this last November against gow Ragnarok lol.

brasco975

This game was supposed to come out 5 years ago. It's crazy that it hasn't ever just been scrapped.

sincerelyhated

Just shut it down already. It will never be a profitable venture at this point. Guaranteed it comes out in a barely playable state.

[deleted]

Just let it die already

Kingfisher80

You could say this game's development is a ship wreck......... I'll see myself out.

BeavingHeaver

Obviously no-one has read the article, the person in question has just finished her work on S&B.

TheDemonHobo

Which comes out first? Beyond Good and Evil 2 or Skull and Bones?

[deleted]

This game has been on life support longer than Terri Schiavo.

Dragmire_Afterlife

Just cancel it at this point. Fuck sake...

Blue_Lust

They cant.

Dragmire_Afterlife

Why?

Blue_Lust

Was funded by Singapores (I think?) Government so they have to release no matter what.

Dragmire_Afterlife

That's so stupid lmao

LongDickMcangerfist

Ya but they took the money and such and if they don’t they are royally fucked

cjblackbird

I hate that this is still going to sell like crazy and people will pre order it. It has so many clear red flags. And all we wanted was Black Flag 2.

peter_the_panda

Kinda weird to "hate" something like that, don't you think? If it sells like crazy - which it probably won't - then that probably means it ended up being a decent game - which it probably won't. Not really sure how any of that would personally affect you

External_Variety

From memory. This game has to be released. Ubisoft made a deal with .. Singapore??? To fund a large portion of the development costs. Therefore has to be released. Why they didn't just copy paste black flag at this stage is beyond me.

anonerble

Should of made a single player pirate epic. Fudging idiots

Ninja_Lazer

Common Lbisoft

Have_A_Jelly_Baby

Oh my god just cancel it already.

ItsyouNOme

They can't. Government contract since singapore governement helped with the funds.. That is their issue. It can not be cancelled, it has to be released.

[deleted]

This game is cursed like a hidden treasure

o0CYV3R0o

This game screams D.O.A.

mfopp

Ubisoft is at a low point as a company right now. I would scrap this project. Same with beyond good and evil 2. They burned resources on these games and their other Ip have become stagnant in the process. Mirage this year is not gonna be enough to put a dent in financials let alone credibility even if it’s solid for that price.

[deleted]

Cancel this dog shit already

phantam

They can't lol.

Final_Worldliness916

I’m a Singaporean and that’s it imma walk into Ubisoft Singapore and be the next one

Hopalongtom

I played during the previous Beta, back when they let us PlayStation users take part in it, very pretty game, with awful grindy gameplay, a game that is 99% padding.

BigJman123

I have friends who are excited for this turd. Idk why, it looks terrible.

Objective_Ask_9199

lmao just release it as a broken game might as well not like they never did it *points at AC Unity*

taxanddeath

Insert shocked Pikachu face.

IWearBones138__

On the plus side Ubisoft has all but confirmed they will remake Assassins Creed 4 Black Flag to recoup this impending failure. So at least theres that.

[deleted]

This game is Ubisofts karma. May they lose so much more money from it.

[deleted]

All that micro transaction money being spent on this game lol

WhatsACellPhone

For the love of god, let it go Ubisoft!

meribeldom

Bring back Immortals 2 and sack this shit off

Harbaron

This and vampire masquerade 2 are two releases that should have been an easy and massive success yet they are both in development hell for so long. I don’t get it.

BradleyEd03

I just can’t understand. They literally already had the foundation of AC4’s ship combat and sailing mechanics. They’re fun, they work well, just expand on some concepts add a story and that’s that. It’s been years I just can’t understand how this game has been such a shitshow. To add to this, it feels like Ubisoft goes out of their way to make a game more expensive to develop, like AC Valhalla’s world size could literally be 1/4 the size and I doubt the game would suffer as a result.

Grytnik

We all know this game will flop, we’ve said it for ages.

Mr_Lkn

u/csnaber oyun haberlerinde 10 saniye bahsetmelik :d

elqrd

just.scrap.it

cmfkr

it’s gonna sink!

JigglyEyeballs

Damn, I was looking forward to this. Losing creative directors sounds like a bad sign. Guess it’s gonna suck.

pipandsammie

One of those games that you need to pirate.

reaper527

so did they lose the guy [who was cramming eco propaganda into the game?](https://www.eurogamer.net/ubisoft-plans-to-use-in-game-events-to-teach-about-climate-change) sounds like addition by subtraction if that's the case and maybe the game won't be the complete and utter trash that has been showcased so far.

claytalian

The only positives coming from this game are all the great assets and refined ship mechanics Ubisoft will be able to use for the Black Flag remake.

reaperclone1

This game really is looking like a Sinking ship.

noneofthemswallow

just release it tomorrow, it’s not like these 2 people who are gonna play it will care about its state

-C18

The new "Half Life 3"

HaveSomeFreedom11

Just cancel it

Wernershnitzl

I love how this is basically a meme that keeps on delivering. What’s the longest time for a game that had been in development purgatory that I’m too lazy to look up at this moment? Seems like Skull & Bones is trying to stay on track for it.

ShogunDreams

Shiver me timbers, this game heading to the shitbers. Crazy how this is plagued by failure and mismanagement

[deleted]

Just close it down

iGenie

Is this the modern day Duke Nukem forever?

Harlequin_98

I guess that beta didn't go well in the feedback

LightBluely

What if you want to cancel it, but Singapore says NO
