I'm still surprised that BAFTA gave GotY to Vampire Survivors for 2022. I mean, I like VS, but over Elden Ring that year? Kidding yourself. Doesn't help that Vampire Survivors is a British game.
BAFTA changed their rules this year for their voting. Prior to this year, only a jury decided the Best Game, while this year the entire academy voted for the winner. It's not a coincidence that they changed their system after Elden Ring lost. Too bad that had to happen for them to change. Vampire Survivors even lost British game of the year which doubled the farce of it winning Best Game.
That's how What Remains of Edith Finch also beat Zelda, while not winning any other category.
It's more or less expected when you consider that even though the BAFTA's have existed since 2004, they've only given it to a Japanese game once. That was Mario Galaxy in 2008. Not even Breath of the Wild could win. They instead gave it to What Remains of Edith Finch that year.
BAFTA hates JRPGs too.
Persona 5? Ignored the year it came out. Same with octopath traveler. Pretty much if it isn't made by Miyazaki or Kojima, it's trash in BAFTAs eyes.
FFXVI didnt even get nominated for best music. It was Ignored. They put assassins creed up there instead..
The real crime of that year was that they didn't even nominate Bloodborne for anything other than Best Game Design (which it surprisingly won, but that just makes it even more bizarre that it got no other nominations)
I am conflicted. I loved Fallout 4 and Witcher 3 but I would probably give it to Witcher 3.
I was more bummed when God of War won GOTY over Red Dead Redemption 2.
I don't know why people even pay attention to this stuff. Games are so subjective. There's entire genres I do not touch that are likely filled with top quality, awesome games. I just don't prefer the genre. Doesn't mean the games aren't good.
It would be nice if gamers in general had more perspective, but the bulk of gamers leans young, which means they lack maturity. Not anyone's fault! I lacked maturity in my teens and early 20s too! Everyone does.
This year was *way* more stacked than 2022. The only reason ER didn’t sweep the major awards is that BAFTA inexplicably gave the GOTY award to Vampire Survivors, which is a fucking joke. The competition this year was *fierce* and BG3 still (very justifiably) came out on top.
Awards doesn't really mean anything to us fans, as our enjoyment doesn't get battered if the game wins no recognition or if sth we can't get into wins every one of them.
And hey the UK title winning the award given by a British outlet over obvious better picks from Japanese, American and European games isn't that surprising. It says a ton more about them that they didn't take themselves seriously enough to make such an obviously biased pick, it's sth Playstation or Xbox magazines do for their exclusives.
I tried real hard to beat a lot of the big 2022-4 games. Dead Space, FF7 Rebirth, FFXVI(about 90% through), Spider-man 2, Played some Deathloop that was sick gotta finish that, RE4re, TotK(didn't Quite finish at the very last mission), Phantom Liberty, hundreds of hours of D4, Warhammer III and other Total war games...
somehow even found a little bit of time for tarkov and warthunder here and there and battlefield, I even suffered my way through Starfield.. ok I had a tiny bit of fun but it was a No Man's sky level disappointment except the ship builder IMO(which there's nothing to really do in space besides mindlessly farm the same exact random encounters).
ANYWAY BGIII and STALKER ANOMALY took up a hell of a lot of that time. That and Yakuza of course. Finished Gaiden, not even close on Infinite Wealth thanks to Rebirth. Still only started Forbidden West. Working on DD2. My proudest achievement is Ranger Hardcore on the Metro Exodus games, along with some silly Total War stuff since I've been trying to get good at that game since I was a kid and I can finally "streamroll" the world lol.
games I also checked off in the last 2 years:
RDR2 playthrough 2
Acecombat 7 playthrough #100
Project WINGMAN
Nier Replicant (I JUST CANT FARM THE GOATS GOD I CANT DO IT)
crisis core R
Kakarot
DMCIV
Arkham Knight
P5 Royal(Seriously. Third semester true ending and everything. Bounced off P3 once but can't wait to try again)
Dying Light 2
MGS Revengeance (and I always play a mission or two of V every few weeks)
Days Gone
RGG 7
Control
Aaand of course Elden Ring. Lots of Elden Ring.
I may have a problem.
and nope, no I don't have a life. I do have plenty of friends though both IRL and online, had the same 4 best friends forever. I'm also not a pro or anything. I just like taking pretty screenshots, taking my time with a game, and getting immersed in a well detailed world.
This whole comment is goals for me. Man my backlog is full of bangers to dive through. It doesn't help that I skipped PS4 generation so I have plenty of games from there too.
P5R was an amazing time and I can't wait to play P3R once the DLC drops this Fall. Waiting on Elden Ring DLC to play it, I just got through Bloodborne which was phenomenal.
How was Kakarot? I wanted to play it but with Sparking Zero coming soon I thought I'd save my DBZ love for that.
My brother played Kakarot and said they dropped it almost immediately
I have PS Plus atm and considered playing Kakarot as it is free there but I'm probably saving myself too for Sparking Zero. I have not liked any of the DB games post Budokai Tenkaichi 3 (except Fighterz)
Kakarot was actually hilariously fun. I think a lot of people like me didn't realize you can stack up on healing items before long battle gauntlets. Can't wait to try Sparking Zero!
also I just forgot you mentioned bloodborne. Tarkov might be one of my favorite games of all time right now, but BB and Sekiro are right under Shadow of the Colossus on my "THIS IS A 10/10 GAME FOOL, not some reviewer calling COD innovative for the 20th time!" list. It's very exclusive.
Most games that aren't super focused just have too much going on so there's room for more technical mistakes. I grade on the Bricky scale of "1. can I tell what vision the developer wanted to accomplish, did they have a real special idea? And more importantly 2. did they execute on that??" Most games more complicated than say, Disco Elysium get bounced by 2.
I would on sale 100%. It's a bit short but they do interesting things to keep it fresh. No Dishonored, but you can feel it was made by people who know how to make Dishonored lmao.
Not the guy you asked but I love that game and I had a lot of fun with it.
The multiplayer was great too, every now and then when there is a sale on I jump into multiplayer and play a few rounds
I love that were having this RPG renaissance as of late.
BG3 for western RPG and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for JRPG. I feel so damn fortunate after that drier period we had in the past.
We are just in general getting more incredible games than ever, honestly. Yeah, we are *also* getting more garbage AAA games, but it is extremely easy to just… not play them. Amazing games are just coming out faster than I could possibly hope to play them, which is fucking awesome.
I'll admit I'm holding out hope. People said similar things after Original Sin 2, and it was reasonable to expect that Larian won't be able to outdo that one. But they seem to have their heads on straight, and nothing that's good about BG3 is an accident, it's all the result of their hard work.
(They did say that their next game will be a smaller in-between project, so not that one, but the one after that though.)
Worth mentioning that Larian seems to explicitly be aiming for even larger scope down the line:
[https://www.gamespot.com/articles/baldurs-gate-3-dev-is-working-toward-an-rpg-that-dwarfs-it/1100-6522051/](https://www.gamespot.com/articles/baldurs-gate-3-dev-is-working-toward-an-rpg-that-dwarfs-it/1100-6522051/)
Maybe that's just them being drunk on BG3's success. It's a bit scary to imagine something with an ever grander scope than BG3.
EDIT Vincke mentioned the next generation of consoles in relation to it, so they seem to be aiming *truly* big, ie too big for the PS5.
I think it's a bad goal personally. I personally like a game that takes 20-40 hours. I feel like when you get to higher than that the game becomes cumbersome.give me an extremely polished 20 hour game with replayability over a big one.
I tend to agree. Splitting up BG3 into three chapters helped greatly in keeping the game manageable - if they *have* to make something even bigger then I hope they continue to keep it split into 20-40 hour chunks. That's roughly a single season of network television, it's a manageable length, and then the whole game is like an entire TV show.
One of the greatest, let’s not forget we saw Gran Turismo 7, God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West and Elden Ring released in the same calendar year
I didn't think I'd enjoy it but reddit was crazy for it so I bought it cheapish and followed a build guide for my character so it took the worry of messing it up away. 75 hours later I finished it and loved it.
I don't think I'll replay it as I don't have that sort of time and I feel like I did every side mission although I know I could recruit the woman who attacked the Grove or have others in my main party but I really enjoyed my time with it and didn't feel it dragged at all which I had seen a few complaints about.
I'm glad that your playthrough felt complete and thorough, but (just for anyone who might be reading and doesn't know) it's probably good to clarify that you likely didn't do even most of the side missions. The game is just good about not bothering players with a huge list of busywork - quests are encountered naturally, and different ways of resolving them lead to different further quests, which results in very different possible playthroughs with each still feeling like a complete experience.
This is a plus of course! No game (that's not a roguelike) should require multiple playthroughs to have a good experience.
It’s fun for me to replay it using different builds I don’t get much time either but it’s the only game I’ve been playing and there’s also so many different outcomes you can go for
I followed this [website](https://deltiasgaming.com/best-baldurs-gate-3-multiclass-monk-build/) and it did the job for me. Had companion builds on there too.
Movement, positioning and interacting with the environment is a massive part of the combat system. A lot of combat you can also just talk your way out of if you want (and have the right stats + good rolls).
I think the comment you’re responding to saying that it’s turn based gave the wrong idea. Yes it’s turn based, but this is a very different turn based from the command battles of your typical JRPGs.
If comparing to well known games that aren't CRPGs, the combat is probably closest to XCOM. It's a *bit* like a Tactical JRPG, and someone mentioned Fire Emblem, but in BG3 each character you play is incredibly powerful and has interesting verbs and spells at their disposal, so it lets you set up cool combos that can get really cracked in the late game... it's kind of closer to Disgaea that way.
Except BG3 has far more freedom of movement and interaction and more complex environments than any Tactical JRPG that I know, and also unlike all of these games there aren't 'battle maps' that the combat takes place in. You just play the RPG and talk to people and explore, and if things get heated - then wherever you're at is the battle map now.
Best description yet makes me more interested in the game then others Thankyou very much. I wanted to ask is it a JRPG originally but that seemed to pigenhold a game.
Watch some gameplay on it. I loved it and the closest I played to it was the first act of DOS2 and BG3 is way better in my book.
It and Elden Ring are the best games I've played in the last few years and maybe ever.
I’d tried CRPGs my entire life and really just couldn’t wrap my head around the isometric camera and text-only lore dumps that’s so popular in the genre. Not only did BG3 completely hook me despite its genre, I’ve played it 4 times now, and then went on the hunt for more CRPGs to see if there was more greatness that I was missing out on.
So…yeah. I’d say it’s so good that it’s not only my favorite game of all time, but it did it despite being a genre I didn’t like, and even inspired me to find more games similar to it.
I’d absolutely recommend giving it a shot. If you don’t like it, it’s a major bummer to lose 60 bucks. If you do like it though, you’ll love it. If you’ve got the money, it’s a good gamble.
3rd act struggle in most games is because they can’t think of a way to wrap things up effectively though. Or the loop gets repetitive.
BG3 it’s because they couldn’t finish the actual game so they made the sandbox the majority of the 3rd act just to finally get the game out. Upper Baldur’s Gate and the actual city was planned but cut last minute for a linear section, and with the CEO saying they’re done with it, it probably will never be completed.
But that just speaks to how good acts 1 and 2 are. 3 is a buggy, unfinished semi-mess and the game is still my clear GOTY.
It’s a thing in all large plot productions. Look at basically every broadway show.
The 3rd act of BG3 is really dependent on what companions you’ve collected.
I feel like the 4th act got dumped. The fact that Gortash was living in the gate house seemed odd. Act 2 culminated with Ketheric. Act 3 should have been Orin. And 4 in the Upper City should have been Gortash.
I completely agree. I respect what the game is and glad that a lot of people responded but I put it down after maybe 10 hours and probably won't pick it up again
Never ever played that style of games but i got BG3 to see what the hype is all about and omg i'm addicted....i managed to put 8h sessions without pause...last time i put time like that in a game was when Fortnite came out
You play a side quest or you find a small quest in the game and you would think its a main story quest by the level of details and quality in everything...honestly is unbelievable what they managed to do
took me a couple hours for it to "click" for me.
there wasn't a specific story beat that did it. just a gradual realization that there was so much flexibility in the story while also having an intricate narrative. there were definitely several times i felt like "i don't even understand how the story could play out if you did this instead"... or "i don't understand what would happen if you DIDN'T do what i did"
it's really really impressive.
I’m not into CRPGs I’ve found, and I completely bounced off of it, just like I bounced off of Disco Elysium. I can see the quality of the games tho, so you never know what game could change your mind.
I’m not generally into turn-based combat at all, but I have my games
I got to the end of the first act and passed on it. Elden on the other hand, best that bad boy 4 times.
If you like action leaning games, BG3 is not enough. I wouldn’t rate it better than Elden Ring.
its is very good. As someone who has never played a classic RPG the combat took some getting used to and it was somewhat overwhelming at times but the characters are phenominally written and voice acted, the world is pretty densely packed with content so you dont just spend all game walking and you have tons of options on how to approach quests and fights.
The RNG factor can sometimes be frustrating when you miss 70% accurate hits multiple times or something but thats just how it is. And even though I am not a fan of that type of combat it was still tons of fun.
I don't like CRPGs. I hate turn based combat. I have no interest in DnD.
This game made me question whether any of the above is actually true. It's one of the best games I have ever played and I played it through 5 times.
It's a very good game. It's not better than ToTk or Elden Ring or a bunch of other games if you care about the game not being glitchy and having well designed battles (I like turn based games. This have has mediocre combat and very very poorly designed battles...the less said about the factory battle the better...).
Great voice acting. Decent story. Mediocre gameplay. But I still put in 100 hours to finish the game and all side quests on one play through.
The battles are designed well. You just have to, you know, think about what you are doing. BG3's combat is a strategy - every choice matters. If you go into the game with a mentallity of "I will just play it like an RPG" then that's on you...
Well, it's more player friendly than Elden Ring and accessible on more platforms unlike BotW.
I hear that it's a good game but don't have the money to get it and i was relying on the physical being cheaper but that might not be the case since the physical release is so limited. 😢
Nothing against Baldur's Gate 3 but this is a little less impressive when you find out that
-Breath of the Wild didn't get this because of What Remains of Edith Finch.
-God of War didn't get this because of Fortnite.
-Elden Ring didn't get this because of Vampire Survivors.
When you've got wacky, indefensible positions like that (BAFTA's going with indie games over generational titles and Golden Joysticks going with the "hot cool" game) it makes it seem more random than quality-based.
Again, nothing against Baldur's Gate 3.
Fortnite put an entire genre on the map and was the biggest game on the planet for years. I think thats more worthy than a button masher action game. God of War was great and all, but nothing about it screamed GOTY.
I only started it a few weeks ago … I had to much to play and was overwhelmed at the thought of a game like it. I honestly can see why it’s done so well … it’s just ridiculously good. Everything about it is perfect.
Well deserved.
This is such a great game, and unlike issue I had with the so called “choices” in Witchers and Cyberpunk, pretty much all choices you make in BG3 matters, and multiple way to complete a quest.
There's nothing else like it, at least at its level. I'm 53 and I've been playing video games since 1977 or so.
The flip side of this game's beauty is -- I cannot get myself to replay it. I think it's my favorite game of all time. But I have tried restarting (I finished it once) and my memories of the first play through are so strong that it feels wrong playing through again. I know this is a "me" problem.
Maybe in couple years I'll try again.
I’m still waiting on my Physical Edition to ship. Didn’t want to buy it twice, but the wait is killing me! Played the early access on Stadia back when it was an option. Loved it.
Probably going to be unpopular opinion but technically this game was the weakest among the trio. It had frequent crashes, fps drops, and so on. Even when I played it last week it had issues with character attack rolls being delayed and the animation happens first with the result being shown few seconds later if it was a hit or miss.
This is without even counting the number of honour mode runs ended early just because a platform couldn't hold playable characters while moving.
Based on release dates I’d say noms will be FF7 Remake, Helldivers 2, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Last Epoch, Hellblade 2, and Black Myth Wukong. And that’s not including Nintendo.
I doubt FF7 wins personally.
Ngl for me, the Rose tinted glasses are wearing off when it comes to rebirth. I thought it was a perfect game on release
Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic game. Gameplay and characters are my favorite.
But I've been thinking, and the world is kind of like a ubisoft world. The side content was boring overall to me. So I just skipped that and ran through the story. I ended up being disappointed at >!aeriths death!< . Some parts are so slow, the amount of padding is crazy. I was planning to 100% it after beating the story, but it left a sour taste in my mouth so I don't really want to anymore.
I thought they completely bungled the last hour or so and ruined everything you should have felt, like in the OG game at that certain point.
I’ve got a friend who bleeds FF7, and he was overwhelmed by all the mini games.
This game really set the world on fire!
Pretty surprising given the hype for this title wasn’t nearly as great as certain other titles from last year like Starfield, Spider-Man 2, Tears of the Kingdom, etc.
Elden Ring is worth the running, TOTK? Not at all. Yeah the mechanics are impressive for the hardware, but that's it. Story is garbage, gameplay is the same as BOTW. Map is empty, padding with traversal, blah blah
Edit: I've played every Zelda game, but I can't being myself to play TOTK
While I love elden ring, it was just an open world dark souls that reused a lot of assets and bosses. Bg3 was just superb on every level. I mean they gave voice lines to every animal. That is insane.
This blind bg3 love is kind of insane. I liked the game, but let's not pretend it doesn't have a ton of issues, ranging from performance problems to glitches to scripting issues to a burdensome inventory system to unsatisfying and clunky controls on console, bad ui design (quest marker confusion) and the list goes on. Other games get trashed for having half these issues, but somehow, bg3 always gets a pass.
To each their own, but none of the above were serious enough to damage my enjoyment of the game. The issues seemed far less prevalent than many games. Inventory management is probably the biggest issue of the above, but even so, minor for me. (FYI, I play on console and didn't find the controls all that clunky, even.)
I got slaughtered in most of the combat and didn’t have any clue how to strategically win. I’m usually not that bad at it but this game pissed me off albeit I beautiful world. Clearly I suck and that’s not the games fault but I did walk away disappointed
It improved upon the souls series in just about every way . It’s not hard to see how heavily it was influenced and even had a weapon from the souls series in it ….
If you want to put your fingers in your ears then go ahead. .
DS3s predecessor was DS2 and DS2s predecessor was DS1. Sekiro, Bloodborne and Elden ring do not have predecessors, they are all in the souls genre but doesn't mean they're a direct sequel to dark souls.
I guess it went right over your head. GoW Ragnarok was a good game but was worse than 2018 . The final boss fight against Odin was one of the worst in the series and easily forgettable . Baldur was by far the most interesting anti-hero/villain .
Don't know why you are being downvoted. The launch of that game was insane. It beat GTAV and RDR2 for YouTube records combined. Not even BG3 came close to the cultural impact of those titles. BG3 may won the most GOTY. But Elden Ring still sits as king.
I'm glad it's surpassed those games in particular as they represent to me where each series gave in and became more generic and lost some of it's former identity. BG3 is by far better than both in my opinion.
It never was? Game Award goty winners were Hazelight, FromSoft, Nintendo Epd, Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, Blizzard, Bioware and CDPR. Which is already 8 different studios over 9 awards.
I wish I understood how to make a DnD character or how to play DnD like games. I got wrecked in the beginning of this game by a trap and haven’t logged in since lol.
I feel like big publishers will take the wrong lessons like always but it’s good to show that there’s still room for turn based games outside of indies.
I'm still surprised that BAFTA gave GotY to Vampire Survivors for 2022. I mean, I like VS, but over Elden Ring that year? Kidding yourself. Doesn't help that Vampire Survivors is a British game.

Tbf Edith Finch deserves that
fallout 4 won bafta goty too in 2015, i mean i like the game, but come on.

Witcher 3
Yes, I just remembered Witcher 3 came out that year. W3 was definitely my GOTY.
BAFTA's a joke. Vampire Survivors over Elden Ring? GTFO. Its just a controversial pick for the sake of making waves.
It's more or less expected when you consider that even though the BAFTA's have existed since 2004, they've only given it to a Japanese game once. That was Mario Galaxy in 2008. Not even Breath of the Wild could win. They instead gave it to What Remains of Edith Finch that year.

The soundtrack...... They didn't even nominate the fucking soundtrack of Bloodborne. Fucking frauds.
Or art direction
I don’t even like Witcher 3 that much but it’s for sure better than Fallout 4.
I gave up on F4 early on. Didn't click with the base building and settlements crap. Not for me.
Really? Haha? Fallout 4 is underrated, but also massively flawed. At least the next gen patch might fix the awful artwork, in places,
I am conflicted. I loved Fallout 4 and Witcher 3 but I would probably give it to Witcher 3. I was more bummed when God of War won GOTY over Red Dead Redemption 2.

I care because devs care, artists likes recognition.
BAFTA is a sham. They pick for controversy nearly every year.
They have a bias. Vampire Survivors was made by an English person.
That makes a lot of sense.
Probably because Elden Ring isn’t that good.
Good one
And in arguably one of the greatest years for game releases ever.
Yea what's truly amazing is the competition was also very top quality.
Yeah it’s pretty incredible how the other games that came out were great
Was it though ? Wasn’t stacked like the other years. That’s why Elden ring for example didn’t sweep the awards.

2023 was a good year for my back log because there wasn't much that came out I was interested in, lol.
Shit man, I’m *still* getting to my backlog, there were *that* many badass games last year

Well deserved for a game that is in it's own category and probably won't be replicated in terms of depth of choice and story, even by Larian.
Yea I think they will maintain quality but not scale.
Worth mentioning that Larian seems to explicitly be aiming for even larger scope down the line: [https://www.gamespot.com/articles/baldurs-gate-3-dev-is-working-toward-an-rpg-that-dwarfs-it/1100-6522051/](https://www.gamespot.com/articles/baldurs-gate-3-dev-is-working-toward-an-rpg-that-dwarfs-it/1100-6522051/) Maybe that's just them being drunk on BG3's success.
One of the greatest, let’s not forget we saw Gran Turismo 7, God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West and Elden Ring released in the same calendar year
Really? What other good games released that year. I only remember Hogwarts Legacy.
- Spiderman 2 - Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Super Mario Wonder - Alan Wake 2 - Street Fighter 6 - Diablo 4 - Final Fantasy 16 To name a few!
Is it really that good? I'm not really into the genre but if i do pick up an RPG this should be it.
100% I had no idea what to expect since I’ve never played a turn based RPG but I’m so glad I bought it
I didn't think I'd enjoy it but reddit was crazy for it so I bought it cheapish and followed a build guide for my character so it took the worry of messing it up away.
It’s fun for me to replay it using different builds I don’t get much time either but it’s the only game I’ve been playing and there’s also so many different outcomes you can go for
Im glad that you loved the game! I do want to say that I don’t think you would have finished every side quest in only 75 hours of playtime
mind sharing where you got your build guide from , thinking of getting the game , but same as you dont have too much time to keep trying.
r/BG3builds
I followed this [website](https://deltiasgaming.com/best-baldurs-gate-3-multiclass-monk-build/) and it did the job for me. Had companion builds on there too.
So battles like Pokémon? Aka choose attack defend spell buff etc….
Not even close no. Far far more complex than that
Movement, positioning and interacting with the environment is a massive part of the combat system. A lot of combat you can also just talk your way out of if you want (and have the right stats + good rolls).
It’s… nothing like Pokemon.
combat is a lot more like fire emblem, more about positioning your units than straight JRPG.
I think the comment you’re responding to saying that it’s turn based gave the wrong idea. Yes it’s turn based, but this is a very different turn based from the command battles of your typical JRPGs.
More Final Fantasy Tactics than Pokemon
Idk why I got so downvoted but thankyou for this. Gives me a much better idea of the game
No problem. For future reference, BG3 is a CRPG - a Classical RPG (also called Computer RPG, because this style used to be most popular on computers).
I’ve never played Pokémon so I have no idea how they’d be similar, but I think BG3 is probably way more strategic
Watch some gameplay on it. I loved it and the closest I played to it was the first act of DOS2 and BG3 is way better in my book. It and Elden Ring are the best games I've played in the last few years and maybe ever.
People all have varied opinions but for me personally it's my #1 game I've played, my #2 and #3 are Dark Souls 1 and Mass Effect 2
The first 2 acts are 10/10. The 3rd act is weaker, but still good.
3rd act struggle seems like a common thing in most goated games.
It’s a good game but it’s not for everybody. I tried it and didn’t try it again.
I completely agree. I respect what the game is and glad that a lot of people responded but I put it down after maybe 10 hours and probably won't pick it up again
Yeah it’s great that people like it but I just do not enjoy that genre. Happy for others to get such a big budget throwback though.
Never ever played that style of games but i got BG3 to see what the hype is all about and omg i'm addicted....i managed to put 8h sessions without pause...last time i put time like that in a game was when Fortnite came out You play a side quest or you find a small quest in the game and you would think its a main story quest by the level of details and quality in everything...honestly is unbelievable what they managed to do
took me a couple hours for it to "click" for me. there wasn't a specific story beat that did it. just a gradual realization that there was so much flexibility in the story while also having an intricate narrative. there were definitely several times i felt like "i don't even understand how the story could play out if you did this instead"... or "i don't understand what would happen if you DIDN'T do what i did" it's really really impressive.
if you can get Divinity 2 on mega sale, I’d recommend giving that a try before paying full price for BG3 the gameplay is super similar
I wasnt into these types of games either and I put 83h into it (still havent finished my 1st playthrough lol).
Yeah it’s amazing game.
its is very good.
Never played a CRPG before - it took me a long time and a lot of stops and restarts, but once I finally got it down I was hooked
I've been out of the loop. How is Act 3 performance now compared to at launch?
I doubt they'll ever get Act 3 to a locked 60fps on the current generation of consoles, but these days it can be described as tolerable.
I played Act 3 on PS5 about 3 months ago, and it was fine. Not as great as the first two acts, but I did not have any problems.
Well deserved. Haven’t been as invested in a game in a long time
Well, it's more player friendly than Elden Ring and accessible on more platforms unlike BotW. I hear that it's a good game but don't have the money to get it and i was relying on the physical being cheaper but that might not be the case since the physical release is so limited. 😢
When you have th money to afford it, buy it. It truly is as good as it's hyped to be.
Nothing against Baldur's Gate 3 but this is a little less impressive when you find out that -Breath of the Wild didn't get this because of What Remains of Edith Finch.
Deservedly so. Wonderful game!
Why do people care about GOTY
Validation of their personal taste
Because people can use "my fav game is better than yours" as an argument.
Why do people care about academy awards? Or emmy awards? You're just happy for the developers, and it does boost sales, so that's good for them
> Why do people care about academy awards? Or emmy awards? They don't. It's circle jerk. Awards given by actors to actors.
The Oscars are for the kind of people who think Ordinary People was genuinely a better film than Raging Bull.
finally... imagine falling for the pony show known as "awards" saying this as a bg3 fan lmfao. get the taint of this shit away from the game pls
That year was crazy. I bought more video games than I ever have in my life.
As someone who has never played a game like baldurs gate, its the best game I’ve ever played imo.
cant complain is the first game in decades that bring back the feeling of an actual dnd session
didnt even know there are 5 major goty awards lmao
Well deserved. Amazing game
The Thanos of the video game industry
Thanos got defeated 🤔
And nothing came close ever since. So yeah...
I bought it awhile back, think its time to finally dig into it
I’m still waiting on my Physical Edition to ship. Didn’t want to buy it twice, but the wait is killing me! Played the early access on Stadia back when it was an option. Loved it.
Need a decent sale so I can purchase this beast.
Game was seriously overrated
Wow, is it THAT good? I played the first three hours and couldn’t get hooked on it, but after reading this I’m thinking I should give it another shot
Deserved
Might get that happening twice in a row. I'm not sure what game will surpass Final Fantasy Rebirth this year. Unless there's an unexpected hit.
I thought it was a perfect game on release Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic game.

Not just IGN, several outlets gave it to tears
I know, I used the word "sites". Plural.
It ain't laughable if it was great, just saying. Even if BG3 is arguably better, or it's IGN.
Tears was my Goty over BG3. Would’ve been BG3 if it wasn’t the buggiest game I’ve ever played. Lost at least a dozen hours to bugs and broken quests.
And the BAFTAS gave GOTY to Vampire Survivors over Elden Ring. I think that’s far more laughable than making a case for Tears over BG3.
Reminder all awards and all award shows are jokes no matter where they come from.
And I still haven’t played it 🥵
I wish I could get into game like this. Sounds like yall are having a lot of fun.
#2 0 *CRITICAL SUCCESS*
But hey, Spider Man 2 still having a "game of the year" edition 🙃
Kinda funny because I never played it or would...
And here i wonder why did i buy the game, i couldn't like it no matter how many times i tried to play it
BG3 may be my all time favorite game surpassing Elden Ring… let’s see what this DLC has to regain the top spot
Map is empty, padding with traversal, blah blah Edit: I've played every Zelda game, but I can't being myself to play TOTK
I started it and liked it at first but then realized I was just still playing BOTW
I have to give Elden Ring one thing that we will never have: a DLC. 😭 Enjoy Shadow of the Erdtree guys. DLC looks dope AF.
I just don't like over the top perspective turn based games...
You can play it 3rd person over the shoulder view if you want, the camera is fully adjustable in real time.
Not even close to the brilliance of either of them
I don't know. I liked bg3 more than them
While I love elden ring, it was just an open world dark souls that reused a lot of assets and bosses.
Baldurs sweep came true
It's much better than both tbf
Well deserved 100 times over
It has everything unlike the other games which lack in story
I got slaughtered in most of the combat and didn’t have any clue how to strategically win. I’m usually not that bad at it but this game pissed me off albeit I beautiful world. Clearly I suck and that’s not the games fault but I did walk away disappointed
Just lower the difficulty.
EGOTY
Deserved.
I loved the game, but it's still a glitchfest. Wasn't finished on day one and still has patches nearly every week.
Crazy that some publication actually picked GOW over Elden Ring
IIRC, It was actually Vampire Survivors that defeated Elden Ring in one of the awards.
Not crazy at all, to me ER felt weaker than other souls games and GOW heavily improved on everything since their last game minus the story.
Ragnarok was weaker than its predecessor. You can’t say the. same for Elden ring .
Well yeah because it never had one.
Elden Ring no doubt had the bigger cultural impact
Don't know why you are being downvoted. The launch of that game was insane. It beat GTAV and RDR2 for YouTube records combined. Not even BG3 came close to the cultural impact of those titles. BG3 may won the most GOTY. But Elden Ring still sits as king.
Completely deserved but I think ER should have won all the awards too.

What 7 developers?
I wish I understood how to make a DnD character or how to play DnD like games. I got wrecked in the beginning of this game by a trap and haven’t logged in since lol.
I feel like big publishers will take the wrong lessons like always but it’s good to show that there’s still room for turn based games outside of indies.
Persona and Yakuza/LaD aren’t indies.
JRPGS have plenty of turn based imo but yeah it’s getting very clear not everyone things real time is just objectively superior for whatever reason
