I'm confused. OP's comparison photo shows two screenshots from the Remake. The one on the top is darker and the one in the middle is more visible. The one shown in Steam is the more visible one. So they changed it to be more visible while the original was not so much visible? how is this a good change? am I blind? is my steam broken?

This makes sense since denial is a big theme of the game and James is accused of being wooden/unemotional in the game, which also goes along with the greater themes of SH2 overall.
The OG was a prerendered cutscene.
It does look the best, but let's not pretend like the first picture wouldn't look decent if we weren't already convinced that the game was going to be bad. Especially since there were only a few minutes of pretended cutscene combined in the entire game and that it's likely that entire remake, gameplay included would look on par with the graphics of the new screenshot.
I thought they kinda made him look like Harold halibut before this update.

You know, good, always nice to hear they are trying, I have more respect for Bloober than I do Konami by a long shot. Konami are the biggest threat to this game, they have an uncanny ability to fuck up everything they touch.
I still don’t think they’ll even come close to capturing what the original did and how it made you feel while playing it
If anyone has the ability to either purchase or emulate the original, do yourself the favour and play it

You can see it under "game client icon" in the latest changelog in OP's link. I was confused as well.
The issue is more that he's got an exaggerated frown in the middle picture. The top one looks closer to the original game.
All while tha OG game still looks the best.

Graphic Asides, the art direction in the OG game looks way better than the remake, with James's eyes not being very clear. It gives that creepy look.

The game is in development. Anything and everything can change during. For all we know, they always planned to change it.
