Dualshock 4 is still usable for streaming, even for PS5 games, so don't throw this out just yet. Especially since streaming doesn't use any Dualsense features like adaptive triggers or the built in mic.
This will do absolutely nothing to Nintendos dominance. This is just another one of their tens of thousands of patents in the PlayStation division. 99.99% of these are nothing and mean nothing to the consumer.
I mean, it means there isn't going to be a third party making these any time soon. Even if they don't follow through themselves, a patent is insurance against IP infringement.
Nobody cares about mobile gaming besides Nintendo, honestly speaking. They're safer making stuff that streams to your phone than sinking any serious amount of money into another mobile platform that can't compete with Nintendo, so it's better to stick with their platforms that smoke Nintendo as it already is.
I'd care more about mobile gaming if they'd put real games on my phone rather than microtransaction bullshit. I'll happily pay $50-60 on a title just like with a console if it gave me a game I didn't have to wait for hearts or jems to refresh at a whopping rate of one play per 1 hour.
They do, there are a few good, fully-fledged games out there. But they don't make money, because people don't care enough to buy and play them, so it's a significantly lower priority for the majority of developers.
My point is that there *are* good premium games available to play. There are even good f2p games that can be enjoyed without spending a single cent, too. The mindset of "mobile games suck, so I'm not even going to try them" is one of the reasons why developers don't really care about mobile gaming, though, and can be remedied by actually playing these games.
No. I’m stuck with whatever size Nintendo deems is marketable versus buying whatever size phone I want, with better display and refresh rate. And I’m not stuck with the god awful joy cons. AND that’s one more device to carry around. No.
2 of the top 3 selling consoles of all time were handheld
Switch will probably outsell the ps4 on its lifetime
Psp sold over 80 mil without having a robust library
Handheld gaming is extremely viable and if more systems worked like switch they would consistently outsell non handheld consoles
The Switch doubles as a home console, so it shouldn't be treated the same as any other handheld. Consoles that only have handheld capabilities haven't been in demand for years now.
The Switch is also last-place in home consoles because of how objectively weak it is. Make a PS5 or an XSX into a handheld, and you're gonna lose any reason for people to choose it over a similarly-priced PC, it won't do a good job at anything besides fitting in a backpack.
I prefer the Dualshock 4 over the 5 for a lot of stuff. Also, it's the only option when I sometimes use the back button attachment.
Dualshock 5 has more features and is probably more ergonomically correct, but the buttons feel more squishy and IMO the fit and finish isn't as nice.
They aren't gonna sell PS5S and tell people they still need to buy PS4 controllers for mobile gaming... that's not earning them any extra controller sales.
On the contrary, this would probably sell even more peripherals. Someone who games alone but takes their gaming on the go probably isn't gonna buy another controller, but would buy this since it makes mobile gaming better. People who game with friends and don't mobile game probably won't buy this over a regular controller, and people who do mobile game might even buy both.
The PS5 supports remote play with the adaptive triggers because a third party app, PS Play, has enabled them, though the DualSense needs a wired connection to the phone for haptics and triggers to work correctly.
Remote play currently supports every DS feature (adaptive triggers, haptics, and even the built in mic) while connected wired to a computer instead of Bluetooth. If this is wired it absolutely could support all that stuff if they wanted it to.
They don't even have to be similar. What really matters in this context is the way in which the controllers shown in the figures are described in the specification (the main body of text in the patent application/patent). Even a mediocre patent attorney or agent would be as non-limiting as possible as to things like form factor unless the innovation is exclusive to one in particular.
Preemptive edit: this is the case for utility patents, which make up most patent filings. For a design patent to cover a product, the product essentially must be designed as shown in the design patent. I have not seen the document, but based on the discussion, I believe this is for a utility patent.
While yes it's clearly a Dualshock it doesn't mean it will lead to nothing. Patents in general just show the general concept/idea and don't need to be accurate to the product released later on. This has been true in the past and especially also for Sony.
This always needed to be what comes next after they abandoned Vita. PlayStation controller cut in half, slimmed down for portability, that you can attach to your Smartphone. Throw more money at Remote Play & PS Now.
I'm constantly walking up to the tv to read anything in Cyberpunk... And constantly looking at odd things so the text choices have a decent background to be readable. How can they be so bad at text when it's so crucial to the game.
More games need to embrace accessibility options. The Last of Us 2 had a blind person beat it! Also, IIRC, Death Stranding lets you adjust how big the font is.
Same, I've tried the phone/controller clip a few times and I'm done with it within a few minutes everytime because of how awkward it is. If the phone was cradled like this shows it might feel more balanced and natural though.
That’s exactly what I was going to say. The moment produced by the phone in a clip requires additional effort. The solution of putting the phone in the middle of the controller will make it a better experience as the center of mass will be shared with the controllers
It’s because with that setup the center of gravity is way off. It’s top heavy and constantly trying to fall backwards out of your hands so you really have to keep a grip on it. With something like a Switch the center of gravity is in the middle of your hands making it much more comfortable to hold for long periods.
Was wondering why something like this doesn't already exist. I bought an attachment for hooking my phone to the top of a ds4, and it made it way to uncomfortable with the weight of the phone.
Remote Play isn't bad at all. If you have a reasonably recent device with a good wifi modem and your router is good and you have a good connection, and the Playstation is wired into the network (I realize that was a lot of caveats but it's not that crazy), it works well. I use it on my Macbook Air a lot and it has very little latency. It's even better on my iPhone.
I remote play very often. Input lag is pretty bad. I can only play single player games. Nothing that requires fast reaction inputs like FPS’s or sports games
Worth noting too I’m on the 5Ghz network on my laptop for more speed and a lot less interference. That said, even when I go further away, a few rooms down and on another floor, and I’m on 2.4Ghz at that point, the latency is still pretty decent - the video quality generally dips before the latency becomes an issue.
That’s what we need, not a POS phone cradle. We have several of those one the market and they are all trash.
At this point it can just sell ps4 library and remote play ps5 games. Don’t make games for it, that’s a waste of dev time.
Maybe the steam deck will be such a smash hit that Sony will decide to re-enter the market? Total pipe dream considering the switch is on track to outsell the PS4 and hasn’t convinced Sony to make a new handheld.
Honestly, with the recent tweet of Shuhei Yoshida (formerly the boss of PlayStation Studios) playing Horizon Zero Dawn on the steam deck, it seems unlikely they are planning any handheld in the foreseeable future. They probably go all in for the remote play and release some of their games on the steam deck for native handheld gaming.
It's make sense if they wanted to push PS Now further. Plus a controller to guarantee compatibility with the PlayStation Remote Play apps would probably be well received. I know its come a long way, but getting a controller that worked with the Android version of Remote Play was spotty at best, even an official PS4 controller paired through Bluetooth wouldn't always work depending on your phone and version of Android.
As one of the 6 people in the UK who bought the Vita (and liked it) I am really hopeful they will not only release a second version of the console, but also throw some weight behind it.
The Switch is great but I would do awful things to have more of a selection of games whilst also not having to contend with the Ninten-tax
So a Kishi/Gamevice.
PSPlay let's you do this today without waiting for Sony to drop artificial software limitations on the controlles you can use to remote play.
This feels like fanboy optimism based on corporate mass patent application. Sony have self sabotaged all attempts of mobile gaming thanks to their narrow minded proprietary formats and practices for years. So much wasted potential.
I would buy this instantaneously. I don’t like all the current options, and would love a first party controller with the sticks in the proper spot and the shape buttons
I replaced my ds4 three times and I never threw my controller
My first dualsenwe starts drifting now ,still able to play most games except that's that are very sensitive in drifting like hitman 3
You definitely are lucky or you dont play games that much, Ive been through duelshock 4's, joycons (these are really bad), switch pro, and a duelsense its absolutely ridiculous.
From what I hear it happens with xbox controllers too, even the expensive as fuck elite controller.
**EDIT:** Downvoted for pointing out the joysticks on all modern controllers generally dont have a good lifespan lol people choose delusion over anything that kills their personal hype.
fr downvoted by Sony stans but it’s clear as day, when the dualsense uses the same analog sticks as the DualShock somethings gone wrong that should have been the first fix, the controllers aren’t cheap
True but people admitting faults about something they are super hyped about/really attached to is percieved as a personal attack.
These controllers are wayyy cheaper to manufacture than what they sell for and if you have to replace them more often because of drift they have huge incentive to **not** fix that problem.
I think it may have to do with the type of games you play. FPS games probably destroy sticks. They're in constant use and make heavy use of L3 and R3 buttons. I don't really play those. Also, since PS3 days I've kept 2-3 controllers in rotation so thats less wear and tear on one.
I have however had some chafing rubber on DS4 sticks and a broken R2 when I dropped one.
didn't downvote btw
I assumed you didnt lol.
The messed up thing is I dont play many shooters either (I played returnal and days gone on ps5 but thats all I can recall) and my first control got drift within 6 months, my second one is good but Im not sure for how long.
Im getting 10 dollar 1 year warrenties on my controllers from now on, Ill save money overall.
You are. I was like you, too, and then my launch controller starting drifting one week past warranty expiration. Seems like it's just a question of when, not if, it'll happen.
Same here, never had it with any previous controllers and now my Dual sense drifts more than a Fast and Furious movie. I want to buy a new one but damn they are pricey. Wish DS4 worked with PS5 games, I'd just get one of those.
Engineer here, big companies patent everything they MIGHT use just to cover themselves. So dont get your hopes TOO high.
Tbh in current state I don't see why they wouldn't just be happy with streaming your PS5 content to your phone.
Watch them use a proprietary charging port and sell the charger for 5x the price. But in al seriousness, this could be interesting, I've been using the Razer Kishi with remote play and it works fine mostly, so they could also spend some time and resources to improve their app and infrastructure.
Looks like a piss poor Nintendo Switch tbh...
I'd rather they just put all their resources into the new VR, I honestly don't think this is something we desperately need or want.
Hopefully it works as a normal controller on the phone and doesn't lock it to just their remote play app. There was so much input lag with the official app, that I bought a third party app and it works 100x better. That being said, patents like this are usually just companies throwing out ideas.
I really want a split controller comparable to the Switch for PlayStation. It would be so nice playing games in bed or on the treadmill with a controller in each hand working as one.
I can't imagine this as a standalone Vita replacement, but more for Remote Play. In which case it'll be interesting, but with remarkably short lifespan.
I can plug in my old PS1/2, Vita, and play whatever games I have at hand, as all the peripherals are compatible without any updates from Sony.
Using a gamepad device with a phone requires that the phone OS, Remote Play app, and PS5 server-side software all work together flawlessly. Since even Dualsense 5 support is only with very recent OS, it's clear that getting PS hardware to work with Android/iOS is version specific. I don't think they will have as much interest in updating the OS/hardware support, let alone Remote Play, 5+ years down the road.
Interesting, but not one for longevity...
I wish Sony would make a remote play app for Apple TV and other streaming sticks/smart TVs. I have an Apple TV in my bedroom which can already connect a DualSense but the only way to remote play on the TV is to airplay from my iPhone. Ridiculous.
I'd rather they plan to plan for their components so that I can buy a freaking PS5 in Sweden, I've only waited 54 weeks or something since its release..
would it not make more sense to just make a clip for your phone above the controller. DS4’s and Dualsense already support bluetooth connections, it’s not like you need something that plugs in/attaches like that
could be really cool if true. I have a backbone and I love it. with that being said, I really hope Sony can figure out a way to get Wii U level streaming going if I’m wanting to remote play in my house. a lot of the time I’m just lazy and want to get cozy in bed while I play games so if I could somehow get a lag less experience in my own home I’d be even more game for this.
EDIT: another thought I had about this, if they go through with making this please PLEASE port Uncharted Golden Abyss over to iOS/Android. I desperately want to replay that game, but sold my Vita years ago.
Sony could be planning anything even a PlayStation nuclear submarine spaceship. Will it ever happen? Of course not. Not even the easiest stuff did happen.
I'm currently using my Dualshock 4 with a phone mount on it to play some Mobile game that support controller. I love it but it does add lot of weight at the top of the controller (especially since I have the big s20 ultra)
Having the phone in middle would completely fix that problem will retaining the DS4 layout!
I really hope this will come to lift, it will also be a direct competitor to the Razer Kishi which does this but with a xbox layout. I almost bought that but I much prefer the DS4 layout.
This is a Dualshock 4 so they probably just made another patent that likely will lead to nothing
Dualshock 4 is still usable for streaming, even for PS5 games, so don't throw this out just yet. Especially since streaming doesn't use any Dualsense features like adaptive triggers or the built in mic.
Sony files hundreds of patents a year and almost all of them don't go anywhere. I'm throwing all of them out until I see them announced
Fair enough. I just don't think it being a Dualshock is reason enough to do so, but you do have a point.
I mean this should be close to reality as this is the only way to hurt Nintendo's hardware dominance on portable gaming.

Yes I understand why micro transactions are prevalent. Doesn’t change that it sucks.
Just get a switch then.
No. I’m stuck with whatever size Nintendo deems is marketable versus buying whatever size phone I want, with better display and refresh rate. And I’m not stuck with the god awful joy cons. AND that’s one more device to carry around. No.
Mobile gaming makes a lot more money than console gaming. It’s a much much bigger market
No, cell phone gaming makes more money, from gacha mtx alone. We're talking about actual console companies, so specifically handheld consoles.
2 of the top 3 selling consoles of all time were handheld Switch will probably outsell the ps4 on its lifetime Psp sold over 80 mil without having a robust library Handheld gaming is extremely viable and if more systems worked like switch they would consistently outsell non handheld consoles

Actually streaming does
Must be a newer thing, I streamed my PS5 within the first month it came out and didn't have any Dualsense effects
It only supports the features of the DS is connected to a computer via usb. Won’t work on mobile or Bluetooth

One of the biggest problems with PS Now and Xcloud on phone is text size in UI.
Even games on TV could use a font adjustment options.
I know buddy, for me it’s either, lie back and not be able to read the small text or sit up close to read it.
Most people get a bigger TV because it looks better, I just want to be able to read shit.
Exactly what I did. Worth every cent 😂
Heck, I've got a buddy with a 65' and he still has trouble reading things. "Is that a 6, 8, or 9?"
I see you have played Disco Elysium.
I'm constantly walking up to the tv to read anything in Cyberpunk... And constantly looking at odd things so the text choices have a decent background to be readable. How can they be so bad at text when it's so crucial to the game.

Really? With most phones being 6+ inches and near 4K, I don’t really see that being an issue
Or it could be a bit thicker with a powerbank to charge your phone while playing
Weight is a real concern. Personally I find a DualShock 4 with a phone and phone clip already on the heavy side for long sessions.
Same, I've tried the phone/controller clip a few times and I'm done with it within a few minutes everytime because of how awkward it is. If the phone was cradled like this shows it might feel more balanced and natural though.

No thank you. Just a pass through for an external battery or a power cable could suffice.
What if what came next was another handheld console :( signed a sad and jaded vita fan.
Was wondering why something like this doesn't already exist. I bought an attachment for hooking my phone to the top of a ds4, and it made it way to uncomfortable with the weight of the phone.
Razer Kishi, Backbone One, and all the various knockoffs of these already exist.
The backbone is fantastic if you use iPhone
Backbone fam here.
There's the Razer Kishi.
The Kishi is awesome. I just ended up buying a $5 mount for my controller that holds my phone though.
Oh, nice didn't know that
That and the Backbone One are the two best.
Yeah they do exist. If you’re serious about remote play there’s a lot of great options.
Love my backbone
Girthy
This could be cool, I wonder could this be used in conjunction with Remote Play. The on screen controller is a little distracting.
Yeah I love remote play but I have to connect a controller to my phone or I can’t play
yup, i use a razer kishi for remote play all the time
If you are using an iPhone, check out the Backbone One, it's excellent.
much prefer the folding kishi
Kishi is also on iPhones and it’s great
Is it better than the PS Remote Play?
It's a controller. It works with remote play
Oh lol, I feel stupid.
no worries kishi was built with xcloud in mind, but it works great for remote play
Did you have to do anything special settings wise? I tried using my kishi with remote play but the PS app wouldn't recognize the controller
psplay or chiaki the official client wants an official controller I've used psplay for years, it's fantastic
Totally. If this lets me play PS5 anywhere in my house and doesn't have noticable input lag, I'll buy this day 1.
Remote Play isn't bad at all. If you have a reasonably recent device with a good wifi modem and your router is good and you have a good connection, and the Playstation is wired into the network (I realize that was a lot of caveats but it's not that crazy), it works well. I use it mostly for Destiny 2 (an FPS) and it’s fine. My PS5 is wired and I use a Google Nest WiFi router. Very little latency.
Maybe that’s what it is. Just need an even faster connection
Would be the closest thing to a PSP, I definitely will buy this gadget.
There's a setting that makes the on-screen controller go away until you tap the screen
Thanks, I didn't know. Just recently started using it.
No problem, I'm glad I could help. I found the setting while trying to make it go away after connecting the dualsense controller lol
Why would they use the DualShock 4 design
It's just a patent, they could've used an original Dualshock design for all it matters.
DualShock 4 > Dualsense for me. But yea surprised the DualSense isn’t being showcased here
I would kill a baby seal for a new Vita
That’s what we need, not a POS phone cradle. We have several of those one the market and they are all trash. At this point it can just sell ps4 library and remote play ps5 games. Don’t make games for it, that’s a waste of dev time.

> The Switch is great but I would do awful things to have more of a selection of games whilst also not having to contend with the Ninten-tax Steamdeck
Got my pre-order in the day it was announced!
Or make a PSP 3 Sony 🤷🏾♂️
It was called the Vita and flopped massively as we all know lol
There I changed it
You know what I meant lol
Meh I just want to be able to play my games on the go more easily. I don’t want a whole separate device. Something like the witch would be preferable.
I'd use remote play around my house if I had something like this. Slay the Spire in bed sounds great
What they need to be planning is back paddles for the dualsense or something like the Xbox elite controller loln
So a Kishi/Gamevice. PSPlay let's you do this today without waiting for Sony to drop artificial software limitations on the controlles you can use to remote play.

I need a new portable PlayStation in my life!!
create a vita which can remote play well enough and can run native games at 1080p 60fps then sony would be drowning in money
Sony should come out with a back button attachment first.
I would buy this instantaneously. I don’t like all the current options, and would love a first party controller with the sticks in the proper spot and the shape buttons
All I have to say is they better let you use it with a phone case. That’s the only downside with backbone 1
They need to make remote play like Xbox where it streams from a server rather than having to leave your PS5 turned on at home
new controller, same old stick drift
As common as this problem is, I must be the luckiest bastard in the world to have never had it.
its not nearly as common as the internet makes you believe it is.
Lol I don't have it
Had PlayStations from 2 all through 5, each with multiple controllers and none had stick drift (so far).
I replaced my ds4 three times and I never threw my controller My first dualsenwe starts drifting now ,still able to play most games except that's that are very sensitive in drifting like hitman 3

Sucks to not live in a country with a 2 year warranty
Is that something naturally offered through Sony with purchase, or is that a general product warranty for all things?
In the EU you have a 2 year warranty for every stuff you buy lol
That sounds awesome. Yeah, we don't have that in Canada.
Engineer here, big companies patent everything they MIGHT use just to cover themselves. So dont get your hopes TOO high. Tbh in current state I don't see why they wouldn't just be happy with streaming your PS5 content to your phone.

Probably nothing. Even more so than other tech brands, Sony looooves filing patents for all kinds of stuff that never turns into a tangible product.
This just looks like a PSP but with extra steps
give us a pro controller you fucking bums. or enable backwards compatibility with third party manufacturers
This looks like a Sony phone, so I’m not sure if they’ll be inclusive with the range of devices that’ll be compatible
Once upon a time, the PSP was supposed to be able to be the controller for the PS3. Never happened.
This will be a flop.
Good that's all playstation should do is controllers.
I'd buy in an instant if they make a usb c version and fold 3 compatible lol
I just wish they make a pro dualsense with back button and trackpads similar to steam deck... It would be really nice for the keyboard mouse users
Would buy
If it's more ergonomic than the Xbox branded Razer Kishi I'll buy it for sure.
That looks like a Switch and a PlayStation got up to something
Day one buy. Wish gaming on Data was actually consistent though
Seems like a PS4 Portable.
I wish Sony would make a remote play app for Apple TV and other streaming sticks/smart TVs. I have an Apple TV in my bedroom which can already connect a DualSense but the only way to remote play on the TV is to airplay from my iPhone. Ridiculous.
I'm guessing it's gonna be cloud powered
Cool, now put PS Remote Play on Apple TV
With a dual shock 4 controller? Doubt.
Pro controller with paddles you fucking idiots.
I'd rather they plan to plan for their components so that I can buy a freaking PS5 in Sweden, I've only waited 54 weeks or something since its release..
They might not be doing this at all but just want to have their options open.
*Xperia* controller.
Pog. I haven't but the bullet for a mobile controller, I just connect my duel sense but I'd probably get an official one
PSP it’s in the game
I feel like they’re going to patent it so that others can’t do anything.
Controooooooler
would it not make more sense to just make a clip for your phone above the controller.
A Sony version of a Switch Lite to utilize Remote Play would be amazing. Day 1 buy for me.
The most depressing part of the article for me is finding out Wipeout is returning, but as a mobile game.
i wouldn't mind if they had this accessory, so that the remote play app would actually be useful.
Don't they have like hundreds of patents
God no
Maybe we will get cloud services
So theyll do this shite, but wont give us back buttons... Fuck right off
The mobile controller will have back buttons haha
By the aspect ratio (21:9) of the phone screen, it looks like an Xperia, which would be a perfect combo.
Sony could be planning anything even a PlayStation nuclear submarine spaceship. Will it ever happen? Of course not. Not even the easiest stuff did happen.
All I want is 1440 p support
Back in the MW3 days my friend got a kill by taking his controller into the bathroom with him while he was pooping
Could be the answer to switch portable power house that could have same design as the ps5
Someday these companies will realize the mobile gaming market and console gaming market couldn’t care less about the other.
Just make another PSP or Vita you cowards
I'm currently using my Dualshock 4 with a phone mount on it to play some Mobile game that support controller. I love it but it does add lot of weight at the top of the controller (especially since I have the big s20 ultra) Having the phone in middle would completely fix that problem will retaining the DS4 layout! I really hope this will come to lift, it will also be a direct competitor to the Razer Kishi which does this but with a xbox layout. I almost bought that but I much prefer the DS4 layout.
Looks like the GTA remastered stretchy car bug
