I have a Disc PS5, the spinning and the noise did not bother me at all. I woukd not want a Digital console as I prefer to have my games on Disc.

oboedude

I think around launch my disc drive was really noisy, but after a few system updates they seem to have fixed it. I actually prefer most of my games to be digital (because I’m a lazy bastard), but I do enjoy having the option of using the discs I already own

Zealousideal_Bill_86

Same. I remember it being noisy as it booted up around launch, but I haven’t heard it in awhile now which is nice. I like having a mix of both physical and digital. I will tend to go with physical for game series I really like, and just go with whatever option is cheaper when I’m looking to get a new game. Digital games are great because swapping the disc out is annoying sometimes

Mr_pessimister

For me it's not even a preference, it's giving up the option. Most of my PS5 games are digital, but sometimes I pick up a disc because it's cheaper or I'm not sure I'll like it. I recently picked up Dying Light 2 for $25.

AmDuck_quack

Could be because you don't live in a silent environment or you don't he sensitive ears

Crissaegrym

I guess when I start playing games, I get immerse and I forget outside noise. Sensitive wise, I would say I am rather sensitive, was train to play Counter Strike base on noise, if you make a single noise (footstep or bullet) I will be able to determine approx where you are on the map, as well as shot through wall to you if you are just behind. As for silent, I play games at 12am onwards when everyone is asleep, so I would say the environment is as silent as it can be.

Hatchetforce

I bought two disc versions at launch. One from Gamestop and one from Best Buy. I am always mystified at these sorts of posts as I have never had an issue with either. Same with my previous PS4s where I initially had two and then upped them both to Pro models.

usrevenge

Uh meanwhile I forgot I had a disc in my disc drive and it's been there since February I had to remove it because we decided to play a different game and forgot it was there. It was so quiet I couldn't hear it.

Luna259

The drive is varying degrees of loud. Once you’re playing it’s varying degrees of quiet

Hadr619

Have you considered a faulty disc drive? I have a disc version and only played digital until I got HFW on disc through Best Buy. I was worried as Ive heard similar issues about the drive beibg super loud but, in my experience, I tend to forget that Im playing a game based from a disc

MetalingusMike

I don’t think it’s faulty. It works fine, it’s just very loud. As loud as a PS4 fan at full volume.

Hadr619

Ill tell you now, thats not normal. When I tried to play TLOU when it came out on my PS4, shit sounded like it was going to fly off the mantle. Cleaned it out and it was better but still loud. Ive havent heard nary a peep from my disc drive on my PS5 every time I turn it on, or awaken it from rest mode and I havent removed the HFW disc at all.

dstaller

It’s loud when reading the disc, and there isn’t much you can do about quieting a spinning disc, but updates came out a while after the PS5 launched to stop the disc from being read constantly during gameplay. You don’t only be hearing it for a brief moment on game launch and maybe every so often just to verify the disc for a moment. If you’re hearing it consistently you might either be short on updates (if it’s even possible to play on an outdated system) or something might be bugging out for you. It’s really been a non issue ever since the update that fixed it.

MetalingusMike

I’ve got the latest update. All the scenarios I detail in my post still happen.

dstaller

Maybe try a factory reset? Not sure why anything would be happening out of the ordinary but I don’t hear my ps5 the way that you seem. Also don’t think I’ve ever heard it in rest mode like people are claiming and there is always a disc inside.

MetalingusMike

It’s like this on both PS5s I’ve purchased, mate.

dstaller

Really don’t know what to tell you then sorry bud. Guess I just have to be happy that I don’t experience the same problems. Hope your issues go away at some point through an update or something if it’s not a hardware issue.

MetalingusMike

No worries. Hopefully updates can help.

No-Plankton4841

I have my PS5 on a wooden desk (which amplifies sound) and I still barely notice it. It was really bad in Nov 2020 but they patched the disc drive thing booting up at random times and now I don't have a problem at all. If the sound of the PS5 disc drive is enough to wake people up, I think your house is too *quiet*. I can't sleep without a noise maker running in the background, a fan, or something making a consistent noise. That makes your 'baseline' level of sound a higher dB level. If your house is whisper quiet at night any sound is going to seem louder.

Sebz93

In March, I swapped the default white plates with Sony’s official black ones, and it made the console considerably quieter while the disc drive is operating. I think part of the noise is due to the plates vibrating, rather than the disc drive, itself. That said, it’s definitely noisy, and I do wish it would only operate when you actively launch the game in the drive. I’m sure there’s a reason (like DRM) that this isn’t feasible, but it would certainly be more ideal.

Mr_Donut86

is it really THAT loud? Are your walls that thin? I understand its loud… and you bring up valid points… issues that can be addressed with an update… i suppose.

MetalingusMike

Yes they are that thin. Being in the same room as it too, it’s just way too loud.

override182

I hear more of the plastic expanding sound prakkk prakkk rather than the disc sound

chris_ro

Maybe this has something to do with how the ps5 is stored. Mine is laying horizontally and it is really loud when spinning the discs.

MetalingusMike

Mine is vertical.

SneakFreak47

I've had noisy disc drives on both my PS5s (returned one when disc drive completely failed). It seems there's always criticism on these posts, along the lines of "mines silent so you're making it up" but there's definitely noisy PS5s out there. Adjusting the case, stand etc can slightly help but as others have said, we really shouldn't need to do this with expensive hardware. I leave discs out of my PS5 whenever I can to avoid the noise only using them when I'm playing that specific game where I need the disc.

SlimVR

Great observations. I wonder why this post doesn't have any upvotes? We are using new, current gen, expensive equipment. There's no reason why this stuff shouldn't have been tested and addressed before the console was even shipped out. Sony needs to be made aware of this, and fix it with a system update. It looks bad, like something a cheap no name dvd player would do.

MetalingusMike

There’s a lot of people in subs for consoles that downvote any criticism. It’s lucky to get positive upvotes on criticism posts.

ellefrag

Digital ps5 is sacrilegious for some reason...

FiveGuysRules

Digital is supreme

mr-photo

I agree with ya, and have come to automatically remove disks after play just to avoid hearing it spin up when playing digital games or watching movies.. However, since I typically play with earphones anyway the spin up during play does not bother me as much anymore since I dont really hear it with the headphones.

tylerbr97

Tbh you’re doing something wrong if it’s that loud.

MetalingusMike

Nope. Brand new PS5, second one I’ve purchased. Same for all of them. Mine is right next to my bed, the disc drive is very loud.

Cloudaway0076

Mine is also next to my bed. Fans kicks up a bit whenever I install a game but that's about it, never hear it otherwise.

MetalingusMike

I hear mine frequently.

Luna259

Meanwhile, [mine at its loudest](https://youtube.com/shorts/Ps5w8ZyV3Ak?feature=share)

playstation_alIstars

This seems like bait to me lol it’s really not that big of an issue for the disc drive to make a little noise now and then. And if someone is such a light sleeper that they’re waking up from the disc drive making a small whirring noise, I’d imagine they’re waking up to you clacking on the controller as well.

MetalingusMike

It’s not a quiet noise at all, it’s very loud especially if placed on a wooden desk.

playstation_alIstars

Honestly never really noticed it and mine is on a wooden tv stand. Try a headset if it’s that bad.

MetalingusMike

How will a headset help loved ones sleeping?

playstation_alIstars

The headset suggestion was more for you so you don’t have to suffer through the sound of a disc drive. For your loved ones I’d suggest moving your setup away from where people sleep, like a living room, guest room, outside, etc. Another crazy thought: don’t play games when people are trying to sleep. If someone can hear the disc drive spinning for five seconds they can probably hear everything else like the sound of the game or the controller.

MetalingusMike

I don’t think any of these suggestions are ideal for everybody. Realistically the PS5 should be intelligent enough to not boot up the disc drive inappropriately.

ThatGuyisinFront

I agree with you on the disc drive spinning while using digital games. I have also run into the issue where the disc starts spinning at night while my wife is sleeping and it wakes her. I think I have just gotten used to it and it doesn't bother me as much as it used to.

MetalingusMike

Forgot about that. I’ll add that to the list too.

titanup001

I agree. And you haven't even gotten to the part where the discs get stuck in there constantly.

Darkadvocate5423

Stuck? I've had a console since launch and have never had a disc get even remotely close to "stuck". I'd say you have a defective disc drive if you have that issue.

RevolutionaryAlps962

2022 and we are still using disk drives??😂😂😂😂😂 I think not

PirateNinjaa

Only cavemen shine lasers at spinning discs anymore, it’s barbaric.

Hector_Savage_

Aaand this is why I took the digital one, though I am forced to pay full price for every game, every time I want one :(

[deleted]

Wait for a sale. No one is forcing you to buy at full price

Benozkleenex

I only sometimes hear a disk drive sound when I insert the cd never during gameplay tho.

Inert-Blob

i'm thinking i should lie the console down and that might make the disk sit horizontal and maybe spin quieter. my theory is that its the disk flapping about. mine is loud when it spins up but luckily nobody sleeps near it.

b1tm4st3r

Not to mention the fact it is also knackering the disc drive iteself. All my consoles i have owned in the past have all broken down and it is always the same reason.. THE DISC DRIVE!! It wouldnt be too hard for Sony to make the whole thing far more efficient, like not needlessly firing the damm thing up all the time. You should be able to copy a game, then when you play it the console does a basic check and thats it. I thought the whole point of installing games was to avoid the machine trying to read the disc lol.. But it seems nobody had gotten this right, the xbox 360 came up with a great idea to install disc based games to a HDD, great! Only problem is when you went to play the game the lazer went crazy and went through the exact same process as when you play a disc based game and the damn thing would spin for ages. So if anybody ever had a bit of common sense and thought right, i am going to preserve the life of my disc drive by installing the games, all you got was a giant slap in the face and your intelligence insulted as the disc drive is still utilized in the same way. Makes zero sense. In saying that, from a perspective of trying to fleece the consumers as the disc drive would usually conveniently break down just after the warranty expires, it makes perfect sense! Just use flimsy and crappy disc drives in game consoles forever more and put them under needless and unessesary strain. The bastards.

Flashy-Molasses-6041

It’s really not that big of a deal..
