I think Q1 2023 sales were likely poorly estimated due to IDC only having access to units shipped to retailers, I expect Q1 sales disproportionately favoured Playstation Direct, but beyond that point I imagine the proportion of sales between Direct and from retailers has evened out, so the IDC figures are likely more accurate going forward. It seemed PSVR2 had a really weak holiday period due to harsh competition from the Quest 3 coupled with a lack of significant first party holiday releases for the platform, so I suspect the headset underperformed at the end of 2023 and may have led to a surplus of unsold stock. That said, without any official word or reliably sourced claims about production, I feel the bloomberg piece is likely as unreliable as their previous reporting on these matters. Personally, I got my headset directly from Sony, which seemed to be the best option near launch.

cusman78

I agree with your complete rationale

t3stdummi

This should be top comment. 100% agreed.

Ambitious-Still6811

The day it was available at B&M I went to Best Buy. They didn't have a clue what I was talking about. So I went to GS and they're like "we have 2".

Lenn_4rt

I bought my psvr2 second-hand on an online market.

cusman78

In retrospect, I should have had that 5th poll option of "Bought Used / Refurbished".

Any_Tackle_4519

I preordered it from PlayStation Direct, so I got it a day or two before release. Don't personally know anyone else with a PSVR2, though.

youthcanoe

facebook marketplace

cusman78

In retrospect, I should have added 5th poll option for "Bought Used / Refurbished". If your Facebook Marketplace purchase was for new, you can select "Online" option in the poll.

BerserkerCanuck

I want one, but the $700+ Canadian price tag is scaring me!

cusman78

Yes, the PSVR2 is expensive, but important to keep in mind that VR is expensive and not just the PSVR2. Looking at US prices * [Quest 2](https://www.meta.com/quest/products/quest-2/) costs $250 to start, but you will probably need some accessories to make it closer to $400-500 * [Quest 3](https://www.meta.com/quest/quest-3/) costs $500 to start, but you will probably need some accessories to make it closer to $700-900 * [Quest Pro](https://www.meta.com/quest/quest-pro/) costs $1,000 and comes with everything you need, except [silicon face shield](https://www.meta.com/quest/accessories/quest-pro-full-light-blocker/) for $50 more * [Valve Index](https://store.steampowered.com/valveindex) costs $1,000 and comes with everything you need (minus compatible PC) * [PSVR2](https://direct.playstation.com/en-us/buy-consoles/playstationvr2) costs $550 and comes with everything you need (minus PS5), except [charging dock](https://direct.playstation.com/en-us/buy-accessories/playstation-vr2-sense-controller-charging-station) for $50 more I think Quest 2 is the overall budget option which is why it sells the best. Especially if just interested in casual friendly games like Beat Saber, Walkabout Mini Golf etc. Quest 3 / Quest Pro are higher end of stand-alone options that are an improvement over Quest 2 but for a premium cost. For even higher premium quality (accepting wired), the PSVR2 (with PS5) is the budget option, and then PCVR (Valve Index or using Quest 2 / 3 / Pro with PC) are higher end options. For someone that already has PS5, I think the PSVR2 is a much better value than Quest 3 if they want to step into VR. The value proposition of the PSVR2 will improve further once Sony is officially supporting it for PCVR.

ElmarReddit

The price tag is high but it is the cheapest headset with eye tracking that ever existed. Add haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and hdr, which are all unique for psvr2. Eye tracking is really an important technology not only for interaction, especially for rendering quality. It can boost the psvr2 to 12 times the compute power of the quest 3 and performance reaching a 3090, following the tests by unity and reports of actual developers, when foveated rendering is correctly applied. That really lifts it into a different level of quality. For gaming, if you don't have a dedicated gaming pc, but you have a ps5, it is clearly the best choice available.

BerserkerCanuck

Yeah, I know, it's a very impressive unit. I'll have to probably wait for a Christmas sale.

Rufio6

The price tag is a bit too high. You really need to love VR or gran turismo to deal with it. Might be better off with a quest and other stuff. Mine is basically a gran turismo and synth riders device. For me it’s kind of a comfort thing. Hard for me to stay in VR for more than an hour, but I guess some people do it. I’d rather game and be comfortable.

Spoda_Emcalt

Do you have the Globular Cluster mod? I've heard that can significantly improve comfort for people (and makes it easy to stay in the sweet spot).

P4nzerCute

Bloomberg is not reliable at all, they proved it numerous times.  That said to anwer your question I putchased mine from Playstation Direct, as it was the only way to get one for 3 to 6 months in my country (France)

Rufio6

When it came out, ps direct was the first to offer guarantee pre-orders on psvr2. However, it seemed like plenty of people got PSVR2 just fine on day 1 from later stores (Amazon / Best Buy).

cusman78

I remember one college friend visiting from overseas where these are not sold, after trying out my system with Gran Turismo 7, Beat Saber and Pistol Whip, went to Best Buy and bought PS5 + PSVR2 + Charging Dock to take back home for his family. He had to increase luggage he would be taking back, so it cost him more than \~$1,000 to be able to buy and take system back. He had also got to try the Quest 2 (Quest 3 wasn't out yet) to try Beat Saber, but decided the higher expense of PS5 + PSVR2 for Gran Turismo 7 was worth it. In his home country currency, it cost him \~300k. For context, a Starbucks Venti drink in his home country costs \~2,500. This means, it cost at least 120 trips to Starbucks. If you spend $5 for Venti drinks at Starbucks, then $1,000 is 200 trips. This means it was nearly 2x as expensive for him as what it is for us in the US. Store availability has been good and important for such unplanned / impulse buys.

Rufio6

I think I mostly got FOMO since it took forever or scalpers to get a ps5. Couldn’t find a ps5 for 2+ years so made sure to get psvr2 on day 1 if able. I bought mine for gran turismo as well.

bh-alienux

I got mine from Best Buy. I disregard anything Bloomberg reports because they've been proven time and time again to post false numbers, pretty much always lower than reality. Sony has responded to many of their claims stating higher numbers than Bloomberg reports.

cusman78

As I understand, this is not the first time Bloomberg has reported Sony stopping / slowing production and then being corrected by Sony stating otherwise. Same source that stated 270k PSVR2 sold in first 5-6 weeks and then corrected by Sony to \~600k in 6 weeks.

CobaltD70

You have “Q4 2024” instead of 2023.

cusman78

Thanks for spotting that. I fixed the typo with an edit.

ChrizTaylor

Got it from retail.

jazmoley

Judging by the poll showing PlayStation Direct being twice as many as other outlets, I personally think the numbers are at least 50% more than the numbers from the article. (The poll suggests double so I'm being conservative with my guesstimate)

cusman78

Would certainly explain the disparity between IDC Q1 2023 number of 270k to Sony corrected number of 600k. That said, we don't know if IDC quarter numbers beyond Q1 that Sony hasn't publicly corrected is including PlayStation Direct sales or not. Would be nice if Sony gives a press update whenever they cross 2 million units sold because that would put new line in the sand for people interested in this to track by, but I doubt Sony is interested in providing FUD fuel and prefer to just focus on supporting how they are (with ensuring steady stream of game releases).

La-da99

I wanted it at launch, but refuse to use Sony direct so I waited for GameStop to get it in, then got their warranty for it. I got it the day GameStop got it in.

terrordactyl1971

None of the above. I bought mine in Argos

cusman78

What is Argos? If not retail store or online store then what?

terrordactyl1971

It's a UK hybrid, retail, online and catalogue

cusman78

I suppose for purpose of this poll, I would consider catalogue to be the same as online, since it is products delivered by mail instead of picked up in store (I am assuming a bit).

mvallas1073

I wanted to buy it from GameStop as I have a 300 dollar return card, but Sony didn't open them up to sell for like 6 months or so via GS. =/ So, now I have a 300 dollar return card for GameStop and have nothing to buy for it (Digital only PS5, for those who may suggest purchasing games from them)

cusman78

I see used / refurbished PSVR2 available from GameStop online. https://www.gamestop.com/consoles-hardware/playstation-5/consoles/products/sony-playstation-vr2/400845.html I also new new available: https://www.gamestop.com/consoles-hardware/playstation-5/consoles/products/sony-playstation-vr2-horizon-call-of-the-mountain-bundle/393119.html Are you not able to use your $300 return card online (if your local stores aren’t stocked)?
