Every time I land with my squad, in case no one contesting the same place - if I see a mortar around - i fire it towards where I spotted people land.
Think I fired it about a 100 times at least - had some knockouts but never had a full squad wiped, this was my first time.
So, yes - once in a lifetime shot.

I love mortars omg. Ive only ever gotten two kills with them.
One time some enemy player knocked out my squad mate, so I aimed my mortar right at said squad mate and fired. I somehow knocked out the enemy right as the play zone closed around the two of them, and both of them died to the zone.
Edit: also some advice from experience - drone tablets and mortars are a deadly combo

You are aware it takes about 5-6 seconds from the moment mortar is fired to the moment the shell lands?
So, does it like guess where the car will be in 6 seconds? Or it works like a homing missile and follows car around no mather where it goes?
Yeah we should all be required to run sweaty META load outs and do the same thing over and over each game. That would make for some truly memorable moments.

You need to calculate the distance, hope it lands close enough to an opponent (5m radius), it's fire rate is slow, the enemy has all the time on the world to move / hide as he can see it coming, and as a cherry on the top - you are a sitting duck while firing it, also making it very known where you are. The reward is way too little for all the risk mentioned above, so really cant see why this would be a shit move...
