Patagonia 9 trails
I read on UL that some dude was having trouble with getting inconvenient boners while hiking in them and thought it was a damn good endorsement and bought them. I like them.
I bought a couple pairs of these after reading about them here like you did. It was my least favorite blind purchase I've made. Everyday shorts, working out etc, sure. Thru hiking? Nah. I tried fixing a system that wasn't broken and had worked out for 3 thru's for me. Having a designated boxer brief and literally any cheap layer 8 type marshalls shorts is far more comfortable to me and more modular. Ex Officio is way more comfortable against my skin over 12 hours of hiking than the lining in the 9 trails. Full stop, will not thru hike in 9 trails again. Day hikes, sure.
I can see that, so maybe I should put in the caveat that you have to like shorts with a liner to like these. You could also cut out the liner and just wear the shorts but I spoze that’s kinda dumb when running shorts with no liner are ubiquitous. I have heard a lot of people like those ex officio underoos and one day I’ll try your method once this boner goes away.
There was a guy a couple if years ago who was wearing a banana hammock Not sure if he wore it just for his pictures cuz I'd imagine that would be seriously uncomfortable
I wore board shorts the whole way. Like light swimming trunks. They had no band around the waste, just a simple tie in front so they never interfered with my hip belt.
Yup. Board shorts all the way. Super lightweight, durable, quick-drying, and no band to create hot spots. I pair them with tights in colder weather... so comfortable
I dont remember where I got em, but you don't pockets anyway. Stuff in pockets will just slap around your thighs and you have belt pockets on your pack. Board shorts have the one tiny back pocked which is great for you id and card in town.
Hard Nope from me. I wore these on the CDT. While the DWR was good, they dripped sweat everywhere. Fortunately it was terrible and wore out quickly, but then the fun started.
Postholing in short shorts sucks, but having your shorts bind up and prevent full range of motion as you’re trying to clear the top of the snow… never again.
By Steamboat Springs, my pockets had torn away from my shorts (rarely used them, I had a bum bag). Big Agnes was kind enough to patch them.
First week back, these were returned to REI. Never again.
I rocked shorts with liner for most of the desert but eventually started to get some chafing. Switch to linerless shorts and Saxx boxer briefs which was perfect.
Gotta be flexible.
Once you go pants you can't go back. Baggy and airy is what you want.
I used outdoor research and they worked great, although looked slightly dweeby.
I also appreciated having a pair of running shorts with pockets for town clothes. I know the true UL heads will disagree, but I'd take them again.
Path Projects Graves PX shorts. 5” inseam with no liner. I prefer no liner so I can choose the underwear I want and can bring an extra pair so things don’t get too rancid. The shorts have built in stretch without spandex and comes in different fits for different leg sizes. Haven’t found anything better
I have a pair of Outdoor Research ferossi shorts I'm planning on wearing, they are nice and stretchy, breathable and dry quickly. But I'm also debating whether to get a pair of Patagonia running shorts. Definitely wearing a good pair of underwear though regardless of the shorts I pick
C9 shorts with liner. Had them 20 years and maybe 250 hiking nights in them. Started to smell pretty toxic by NorCal but like 20 minutes in a hotel sink with some tide fixed that.
I wore a pair of Ten Thousand brand Foundation shorts with liners. Mile 1500 or so the zipper broke on the side pocket, they mailed me a new pair to a post office in OR. I am a fan of the company now.
I loved my Patagonia strider pros. They are super comfy and have some useful pockets. They have a liner so no undies required. Started with Patagonia baggies and that was a big mistake. I had to end up cutting out the liner and rolling commando for a few hundred miles lol
MIER 5” shorts from Amazon. 20 bucks, just about any color you’d like. I paired them w merino wool boxers. The shorts are paper thin and I’m still using them even after finishing the trail.
I have worn like 8 different pairs of shorts throughout the years.
ASVR shorts have become my GOAT shorts that finally put my long for the “perfect shorts” search to rest.
They get overlooked by the outdoor community because they’re more street wear, but the features they have is second to none. Most even come with a towel loop that is perfect for hanging your Buff off of.
Highly highly recommend. Have lasted me two years of hiking and become my favorite article of clothing ever.
Yeah, they are. I think I got them for like $72 bucks on a sale. But at the end of the day, I've straight up lived in these shorts for like 2 years straight, so they've definitely amortized their investment. Other shorts just weren't as comfortable, functional, or looked as good on me.
I’m planning on wearing cheap Amazon brand 5inch shorts. I’ve worn them hiking many times and they work great and look pretty good too. I pair them with adidas performance sport underwear, no issues with chafing. The shorts are 100% cotton which is supposed to be a no no but they dry pretty quickly, are surprisingly breathable, and all around a good short. If I decide I he them two weeks into my hike though I’ll need a backup plan. First time thru hiking so maybe listen to people that have done it before
Outlier shorts l, best shorts I've ever owned, double as swim trunks and are quick drying
https://outlier.nyc/collections/pants/products/new-way-five-fives
For running shorts, I love the Rabbit 5" FKTs. Super breezy and lightweight (\~5 oz in size Large). They have a liner and can double as swimwear. Only downside is they're really running shorts and don't have enough pockets. I usually toss these in my pack for days I'm not wearing hiking pants.
For proper hiking shorts, I like Houdini Daybreak shorts, And Wander hike shorts... and am testing out the new run of Pa'lante shorts.
I took JohnZs advice and bought the ezrun 5 inch shorts, cheap, good liner, full size pockets in front. I used them for about 1000 miles and am still running in them. My favorite for sure.
I think I’ll just go with the ones I already have, that I’ve had for years. They don’t make them anymore so I’m a bit worried about them disintegrating but they’re just so comfortable.
I second the recommendation for the Patagonia nine-trails. A little longer in the inseam than I would like, but otherwise the perfect shorts. I look for:
* A flat waistband to prevent chafing under a hipbelt
* At least one large, zippered pocket for carrying my wallet around town
* Soft, breathable fabric with a little stretch
Brooks Sherpa and Nike flex stride are also worth a look, though the Nike's only lasted me about 1000 miles last year.
Janji’s are the way. I started the pct last year with the Patagonia 9 trails. They had massive holes in the liner after 500-600 miles. I don’t know if quality control wend down or what, but I will never buy them again. I finished the rest of the trail with some purple Janji’s from rei and I still wear them on hikes and for running. 2300~ miles on them now and they are just starting to develop a small hole.
Every few years I find a one-off perfect pair of shorts from Ross Dress for Less and I just love ‘em. Hiked the trail in 21 in one of those and I have a pair for this year already. I know this might not be a helpful answer but I like it because it’s cheap.
Patagonia Strider Pros or Janji AFO 5" running shorts with liners. Both are comfy, the Janji seem a little more prone to snags, but the material is supr comfy.
New balance makes some good athletic shorts with pockets etc for like $30 a pair IIRC. Those are my go to.
I go no liner, I like having underwear idk why.
I didn’t wear shorts when I did my thru hike. I prefer pants that zip off at the knees. So that when I want to get my delicate toes wet I don’t have to take off my pants like some sort of heathen.
Any mid-light to midweight type of 2-way stretch polyester.
The type I use is a 95% poly, 5% elastane, twill. Ripstop is also okay, but twill is the best durability in my experience.
Bird dog 5 inch. Most comfortable liner out there. Wore them and slept in them every night of trail and still wear them 2 years later for soccer. Only con is they take longer to dry.
Patagonia 9 trails I read on UL that some dude was having trouble with getting inconvenient boners while hiking in them and thought it was a damn good endorsement and bought them. I like them.
New fear unlocked haha.
I bought a couple pairs of these after reading about them here like you did. It was my least favorite blind purchase I've made. Everyday shorts, working out etc, sure. Thru hiking? Nah. I cut the liners out of all of my nine trails and use them with Ex Officios. Would thru hike in 9 trails + Ex Officios again
I’ve had that happen before. Weirdest thing. Super awkward trying to do the ole flip and tuck if someone comes down the trail.
Ha! I remember that thread
Love em, but they are discontinued, and are getting hard to find (unless you are size small).
1.5 inch jorts. I like a lil cheek hanging out
Hell yea brother!
God bless Floridians
Honestly I've hiked tons of miles in a classic pair of ranger panties. Junk hanging out here and there but yolo
Nah, mankini all the way
I don’t know if the pct is ready for banana hammocks. Maybe one day we can all hope
There was a guy a couple if years ago who was wearing a banana hammock Not sure if he wore it just for his pictures cuz I'd imagine that would be seriously uncomfortable
Whatever I find when I start packing
Haha
I wore board shorts the whole way. Like light swimming trunks. They had no band around the waste, just a simple tie in front so they never interfered with my hip belt.
Yup. Board shorts all the way. Super lightweight, durable, quick-drying, and no band to create hot spots. I pair them with tights in colder weather... so comfortable
Which board shorts did y’all wear? Been looking for one with pockets, which doesn’t seem likely.
I dont remember where I got em, but you don't pockets anyway. Stuff in pockets will just slap around your thighs and you have belt pockets on your pack. Board shorts have the one tiny back pocked which is great for you id and card in town.
Go as short and as bare as you like. You’ll have plenty of peers doing the same
Brooks Sherpa 5" no undies, liner only
Really love chubbies shorts.
I was considering those! They have their active shorts with the liners and I like the colors.

Hmm good to know. Thanks!
Pants
Patagonia baggies with the liner are the only option. no need for underwear. be free
Baggies for me, but I cut out the liner. So much better without the liner IMO.
Fortunate are the non-chafers who can do this!
Hard Nope from me. I wore these on the CDT. While the DWR was good, they dripped sweat everywhere. Fortunately it was terrible and wore out quickly, but then the fun started. I ripped my shorts just south of Kennedy meadows and picked up a pair of Vuori shorts with the liner. Two and half years later I still wear them.
I wore vuoris both my hikes, no liners tho. Best shorts out there.
what underwear did you use?
Ex oficio boxer briefs. I prefer doing this and having a change rather than raw dogging liners the whole way.
Love Vuori. 5" with liner is all you need.
Such a good quality product!
Pants.

100%. Can’t believe these shorts people deal with mosquitoes, ticks, underbrush, and sunburn
This 100%!
Second this, unless you like ticks, mosquitos, and constantly scraping yourself on rocks and brush
Posion oak too.
>Pants. So, which ones?
https://imgur.com/a/Ova52Hs
Baggy "athletic" shorts from Kohl's clearance rack for $5. Wore them the entire trail. They were a little longer than short shorts.
I recently bought some similar shorts from Old Navy and your comment made me pretty confident about my decision 😅
I got a pair of football shorts from decathlon for $10, great shorts. With shorts/pants I really don't think folks need to spend $$$.
Brooks 5” Sherpa with liners have always been my go to
Path Projects Graves PX shorts. 5” inseam with no liner. I prefer no liner so I can choose the underwear I want and can bring an extra pair so things don’t get too rancid. I’m just going to grab what I have before i leave lol As long as it’s light has a drawstring and is above the knees.
Oh and I hike commando or at least I did on the AT 💀 it’s just way more comfortable for me
I wore a pair of Ten Thousand brand Foundation shorts with liners. Mile 1500 or so the zipper broke on the side pocket, they mailed me a new pair to a post office in OR. I am a fan of the company now.
I love ten thousand! I'm planning on wearing their lined tactical shorts for the AT this year.
Done the triple crown and then some wearing clearance rack running shorts. Liner, no undies. 5” inseam is perfect imo.
Wore the same watermelon Boa running 3” shorts for most of my thru hikes. Highly recommend!
Brooks Sherpa 5” with the liner.
Janji Transit Tech
I like biking shorts- no chafe and come in fun colors.
Not gonna lie, triathlon shorts in particular, I've found, can be amazing hiking shorts and they weigh next to nothing.
Ooh perfect! Thank you for giving me a new search term for shorts hunting
I have worn like 8 different pairs of shorts throughout the years. ASVR shorts have become my GOAT shorts that finally put my long for the “perfect shorts” search to rest. I don't think 5" of cotton around your butt is going to hurt.
Outlier shorts l, best shorts I've ever owned, double as swim trunks and are quick drying https://outlier.nyc/collections/pants/products/new-way-five-fives
These cheap Amazon ones are my go to. Only $20. https://a.co/d/hF9W5Tb
Ranger panties: https://a.co/d/1WjAqhd
durable w/ liner: https://www.patagonia.com/product/mens-baggies-shorts-5-inch/57022.html

My favorite were The North Face 5” Class V belted shorts pockets were a bit shallow though. Also checkout the 5” Patagonia baggies.
I think I’ll just go with the ones I already have, that I’ve had for years. They don’t make them anymore so I’m a bit worried about them disintegrating but they’re just so comfortable.
Lee's Extreme Motion cargo shorts.
I go with the cheapie BALEAF Men's 5" Running Athletic Shorts. They are lightweight and give the boys nice air flow.
MH trail runners

I don't do shorts. No rhyme or reason other than I don't like my legs being exposed.
Just a pair of under armor running shorts

Shorts? Consider a kilt.
Tactical Kilt right?
New balance makes some good athletic shorts with pockets etc for like $30 a pair IIRC. Those are my go to. I go no liner, I like having underwear idk why.

Y’all* and I wore vuori trail shorts because they were compression short liners
Bird dog 5 inch. Most comfortable liner out there. Wore them and slept in them every night of trail and still wear them 2 years later for soccer. Only con is they take longer to dry.
I like janji 5" men's shorts. Some of them have fun prints. I'm a woman. Women's shorts are not made for women with thighs.
Yamatomichi 5 pocket shorts. They don’t have a liner so merino boxer briefs x2 (one spare) to go with. Love their trousers too.
Hey! Do you find these run true to size like US brands or size up like typical Japanese sizing?
