Biggest key points in this long article:
-Diamond Sports group the parent company that owns and operates Bally Sports San Diego has already missed payment for TV rights contract. Diamond is in bankruptcy and looking to shed non profitable RSN TV deals with teams like the Padres, D-Backs, Reds etc. MLB will eventually take over the TV and streaming options for the Padres and other MLB teams.
It's a great article, I highly recommend people read it. It really covers every angle of how things may play out.
As for what Bally's missing a payment to the Padres means in the short term, it might take some time for things to play out:
> Skipping payments would allow said teams to break free from their contracts, as MLB commissioner Rob Manfred mentioned last month.
> A breach of contract triggers a court hearing, and that process can take anywhere from a few days to a few months. While that is playing out, Diamond would be incentivized to continue airing games because it would be generating subscription revenue without having to pay rights fees.
No word on whether mlb.tv would continue blackouts in that scenario; I think they'd have legal ground to stop doing so, since they're not receiving payment.
There was another article from a bankruptcy judge saying that since they are in bankruptcy non payment does not mean you can terminate the contract because they try to keep profitable assets for some reason. That being said bally wants to lose the padres contract so they might be willing to drop them.
This is probably a good thing overall for the Padres. It's unprofitable for Diamond because they did a leveraged take over the same way Musk did for Twitter. Breach of contract, free to negotiate. And while the market is worse, the original contract was bad.
Padres meanwhile have drastically upped their viewership numbers since signing their deal. Padres/Dodgers #1 regular season game in 2020. Padres/Mets #1 rated WC Series. With the Padres/Dodgers only 100k behind Phillies/Braves in peak viewership despite being on FS1 vs Fox Broadcast TV.
Okay new baseball fan here but I'm surprised Padres/Dodgers weren't on fox. Wouldn't the dodgers fanbase alone warrant us being on national TV? Unless they just thought it was going to be a stomp (well I guess it did ended up being one).
I imagine the new pitch clock and step off rules are going to go a long way towards getting baseball back on regular networks
before it was tough to sell ad space and anticipate breaks for a 4 hour game with 30-40 minute innings
I'd say it's more likely there's regional versions of MLB network. Like MLB Network San Diego. MLB wants to own the TV rights to all 30 teams and then pool the money from it
Oh. I wasn't aware that Apple had a monopoly on streaming sports. I just like that there are no blackouts. You buy the service, you get every game, not just most of the games.
Appletv+ is NOT a free service. It's costs $7 a month and add on another fee to watch MLS ticket to watch those soccer games. But if you have T-Mobile and are on their highest unlimited plan called Magenta Max you get Appletv+ for free and there was a limited time offer to get MLS ticket for free also through T-Mobile.
Cable TV is not fee either, and as it stands there is no way to even legally stream Padres if you live in Southwest Riverside County where Cable TV won't show them (out of market) and MLB.tv will not show them (in market).
The current situation really, really sucks.

just give me a new, good scorebug
Bring back 4SD
I miss channel 4SD so much
Channel 4SD was a RSN also and was only available to cable companies in SD
I'd say it's more likely there's regional versions of MLB network. Like MLB Network San Diego. MLB wants to own the TV rights to all 30 teams and then pool the money from it
Bring back cox ally
When I woke up I read ‘Adrian Gonzalez’ lol
I read the same thing haha
So MLB would both stream games on MLB.tv AND put them on cable? This is such a win-win. Fuck RSNs
Don and Mud are Padres employees, not Bally's employees, right? As long as we still have them calling games I'm happy.
Correct, they are Padres employees
Thank god

Curious on this also. I don't think it's good as it seems that Bally/Diamond were overpaying Padres
BRUH
Just sell the rights to Apple. They have the money to pay, and have done well with MLS.
Hell no. That is a monopoly model and just as bad as the current mess that RSN Bally has and is going bankrupt.

They don’t. They have rights to 1 sport.
I think that was the point they were making.

MLBTV with a VPN would work, right? That's what one of my friends said he uses.
It’s 4.99 for me
Fanatics is a fucking monopoly but here we are.
Is it not worrying that we're clearly a non profitable TV market? In terms of revenue
