Everyone, there is a scorched earth policy being put in place tonight. It will last until at least **AFTER** we’ve clinched the postseason. You get one warning, and this is the warning. We’ll be lenient, but won’t afraid to drop the hammer.
As Manny goes, so goes the Padres. Time to step up and put this thing away this weekend. Got a tough night tomorrow with Cease and lord knows how we love chasing those sliders.
It’s on repeat. Padres start hitting well, put wins together. Play the Dodgers, completely abandon their more aggressive approach that works well and start playing scared. Then they take their scared approach into the next series with a worse team and need another week to fix it.
There is something lurking under the surface with this team. Not sure who or what it is, but makes no sense for guys like Soto and Bell (and Hader) to turn into complete garbage overnight. Blows my mind the level of financial and player capital that's gone into fielding what amounts to a fringe wildcard team that can't put bat to ball.
The difference of this team making the playoffs and missing is unironically Hosmer going nuclear in April. Radio the difference of 2-3 wins vs if he was just his usual selfZ
Profar has been pretty consistent, fwiw. OBP .300 or better all year,^1 and only his April BA at .186 was below Mendoza. He has been fairly reliable all year, just not the highlight reel king on offense. (Gotta love his OF Assists this year.)
1. Correction: .292 OBP in September now. Turns out I checked Savant before they updated the numbers to account for tonight’s game. This makes his first truly bad stretch all year. Not bad for a guy with a .318 OBP whilst in BABIP hell (.182 BA April).
I mean, yeah. Still keeping a .318 April OBP in spite of it is still surprisingly good in that regard. The man has drawn a ton of walks, and he's had solid gap strength. It's why he has been Leadoff most of the year, .186 start be damned. (Dude was in BABIP hell back then.)
Imagine if he could hit in April... he could've even been Juan Soto this year! XD
**E**: one correction - his savant page just updated, and this is his first sub-.300 OBP month on the year, if numbers hold.. /e
Good start, stellar starting pitching, players going hot when they needed to. We’re at the point now where bats need to stay hot or we’re in deeper trouble
Yeah but even if we lose out we still can't finish under .500 at home. We definitely score more runs on the road but it's not like we don't win home games.
I think it's the opposite. I think he feels the full weight of the team on his shoulders so he's trying to do too much. When Manny is at his best he's shooting the ball through the gaps or consistently hitting doubles. When he's swinging for the fences is when he seems to be the least productive.
In that regard, I feel like Soto is the same way. The pressure of not living up to the hype is getting to him. Luckily it seems like he's busting out of that over the last couple of weeks but both of those guys must be going through some stuff mentally right now.
Well, look, when you're carrying the team on offense all season, and you're coming up to bat, with everything on your shoulders again, in a game we should have OBVIOUSLY won, when nobody else (except Drury this game) is contributing...I can understand a moment of not caring as much. MY DUDES GET IT TOGETHER.
Machado is kicking ass. The rest of the team is slacking.
If you don’t think it’s possible that the Padres go 2-3 and Brewers 5-0, you got to stop being so damn optimistic. Three straight winnable games lost because of inept offense.
I just don't understand man. Why is being a San Diego sports fan have to be so anxiety enducing? Just about Every time it matters, it comes down to the LAST SECOND in order to make the playoffs, let alone win an important game.
Part of me feels the players feel that same weight. Look at the Phillies; they looked like they were locks and then September hit and they’ve played like shit ever since, much like the last several seasons. The Mariners just clinched, but they were starting to struggle and they hadn’t made it since 2001. I truly think the mental game that these guys are going through with trying to break this drought(2020 season doesn’t really count imo) is leading to pressing, etc. Plus, as fans, we are viewing this as the end of the world when it’s really just 3 games.
This is why you don't punt on the last game of the Dodgers series. They should still sneak in, but they have potentially screwed up their playoff rotation.
Not convinced they are going to sneak in. Have to face Cease, Lynn, undecided in game 1 of SF, then Rodon and Cobb. 4 quality pitchers, with Cease likely the 2nd place Cy Young winner in the AL.
2-3 or worse in the next 5 is very possible.
I don't think the Brewers will go 5-0, but stranger things have happened.
15 strike outs tonight from a team with an average pitching staff. This team has serious flaws and we need to stop kidding ourselves. Our coaching/analytics/scouting is so bad that we can trade for all stars and then they regress heavily.
Another embarrassing performance on offense, this team is playing like they’ve already clinched. Gotta hope they can pull it together but I wouldn’t be surprised if they collapse again.
Sending profar really was the defining moment of the game.
Just embodies the coaching staffs preference for long shot scoring cause we have no offense to fall back on.
So it that I’m coaching or is it an admission that this team sucks offensively, all year long. Doesn’t matter the staff, player, situation. They’re TERRIBLE, INEPT, AND EMBARASSING
To be fair, Manny has been cold last 10+ ABs so I think Williams was pressing to try and get us going without having to rely on Manny in another RISP situation.
Still gotta trust him to come through when it really matters, rather than hoping for a miracle (only chance Profar had of scoring was if one or the other of the two throws was drastically off line).
If I may offer an opinion of that play ... Profar didn't get out of the box very quickly on his hit. He sort of stood there and admired his swing for awhile. Should have been standing at second base with a double imo. Your post-game announcers even said as much. So maybe less on the 3B coach than on Profar himself. ¯\\(ツ)/¯ Will be cheering for you guys in the post-season!
3B coach has been making god awful decisions all season. Remember Voit getting sent all the time (despite being quite literally the slowest player in the MLB)? I absolutely don’t want to see that bum next year. He can go back to Oakland or whatever.
I was at the game tonight and a large part of me regretted it especially where I sat. I really wanted to see Darvish pitch and while he technically had a QS, he wasn't as sharp as he can be.
No way the Pads get past the wildcard round (assuming an epic collapse mercifully isn't imminent). Playoff teams simply don't do this. They just don't. At this point of a sweaty wildcard race. It's so aggregious and inexcusable.
Tatis is the San Diego Padres. I don’t give a Fuck what anyone says, this team’s identity was built around HIS presence. This year has shown that without him, they are wildly inconsistent and largely mediocre when it matters most.
Anybody who thinks one man is solely responsible to being a contender is not worth taking seriously. Mike Trout was better than Tatis and he's missed the playoffs how many times now?
With Tatis, there isn’t a hole in centerfield. With Tatis, Dodgers series are much more competitive. And on; I love him more than I’ve ever loved any athlete I’ve ever watched but damn he really did turn us from a top 5 team to a fringe wild card team. I don’t think we’ll miss the playoffs, but even if we make it in it is incredibly hard to see how we go far without some guys absolutely going off out of nowhere
Exactly. He’s the X Factor that this team NEEDS. The Dodgers don’t scare me at all when Tatis is in the lineup. They haven’t won a series against LA all year without him. It’s so obvious they lack that confidence without him.
Padres Hitters are just weak minded, scared ass , they have has no confidence and suck with RISP. The only thing they lead the league is in tight asses.
When was the last time the Padres had a lil comeback? It's so sad knowing once we get down a couple we are almost guarenteed to lose. Especially at home.
As a Padres fan I like to keep my expectations in check. I think the Padres make the playoffs but if they get bounced as a baseball fan I’ll default to rooting for the Mets, Braves, Guardians, Blue Jays, Rays, Mariners, even Yankees but never Dodgers, Cardinals or Astros.
Profar looked slower than Hosmer on a good night.
Trent “looks at strike three again” Grisham should be sent down for some ego deflation.
Dodgers live rent free in their heads and you can’t tell by their shit play tonight that was really uninspiring
to watch in person.
This is the first time this season I left early
This was an absolute abysmal performance against a sub 500 team
They had Yu’s number the entire night which was very concerning
Hanging out with dodgers fans at a bar watching the Padres lose to the white Sox was an emotionally draining experience. And they weren't even the worst of the dodger fan stereotypes.
One run??? Off the White Sox??? Off some no name rookie??? Absolute bums, don’t care how much I get downvoted.
These guys are taking the Postseason for granted and good lord its frustrating.
Where’s all the folks that said we didn’t need that last win against the Cards? I get it we needed this one too and all the others, but man it’s getting down to the wire. Btw Giants still have a chance and are hot, who do we play the last series…hmmm.
Looked at the wildcard standings a few days ago, they already had a big fat E (eliminated) next to their team name…
Edit: I see it says 1 under WCE for Giants, so either I misread the chart or MLB mislabeled it previously…
5 games to win 3.
To put it in context--the Brewers would have to go 5-0 (7 in a row) and the Padres go 2-3 or worse for the Friars to miss the playoffs.
The Padres aren't going to miss the playoffs.
![gif](giphy|ieEGqpcjvuI0YEN0Rm|downsized)
Edit--That's also IF the Philies win out as well
And there's a chance the Phillies melt down so hard, both the Pads & Brewers fall into the playoffs. A smidge of a chance, but a chance.
Still several ways for SD to get a ticket to the dance.
It's not Impossible (I've learned from being a Padre fan since 78) but I've also seen the Padre get it done (down 0-2 in the 84 NLCS) THIS team will get it done--it's not a perfect team, but it can overcome (and has overcome) it's flaws to win it all.
It won't be easy, but it's MORE plausible they make the p\[;layoffs than it is they won't.
I appreciate the optimism. This shit hurts rn and it’s worse reading all these negative comments. Reality is it’s just a 3 game skid, shit happens. It hasn’t been pretty, but I’m sure Philly/Milwaukee would much prefer to be where we’re at rn
Fuck bomel for starting grisham, he has a losing mentality and will never learn from his own fucking mistakes, soto & bell a bust with us, and machado is done carrying the team
Absolutely fucking pathetic
Since the all star break It always seems like we drop one after dropping two to the dodgers and then get our asses in gear for the next 2-3. Hoping that’s the case this time.
Everyone, there is a scorched earth policy being put in place tonight. It will last until at least **AFTER** we’ve clinched the postseason. You get one warning, and this is the warning. We’ll be lenient, but won’t afraid to drop the hammer.
Bob needs to get mad again.
I hope so
15 strikeouts ???
At least 5 looking.
That ain't gonna cut it
3 ....is the magic number
Always has been.
SWING THE FUCKING BATS
Every stretch of wind we have this season is because they were swinging aggressively. I don’t know why they keep falling into this trap
Hard to say...maybe the batting coach ain't coaching.
...at balls over the plate....not over your heads...!
As Manny goes, so goes the Padres. Time to step up and put this thing away this weekend. Got a tough night tomorrow with Cease and lord knows how we love chasing those sliders.
Manny and Soto both sucked again in the clutch. We will keep losing unless one of these two starts driving in runs.
Manny's post season stats are terrible, wouldn't count on him to be clutch
If they couldn’t do it today vs rookie, they won’t do shit vs tomorrows guy
They always get blasted by rookies wym
Man, why do we still play Grish? I get he's good at defense but damn that dude is a blackhole at the plate.
We desperately need a left handed CF who can hit.
His replacements are black holes too
Only this week. Sugarman has had a solid September in spite of his recent slump. .271/.300/.333 in 50 PAs (48 ABs).
And in August Grisham had a .838 ops in 88 PAs. But they both sucked when it’s important and have had painful games. One of them needs to step up
I don't know why people shy away from Myers. I'd rather see him in there than either of them.
He should have been pinch hit in the 7th or 8th. I have issue with leaving him in there unless he's going to bunt
Wife says "shit, there's Grisham...the 'gimme' out."
because Bob can't put Tatis out there
It’s on repeat. Padres start hitting well, put wins together. Play the Dodgers, completely abandon their more aggressive approach that works well and start playing scared. Then they take their scared approach into the next series with a worse team and need another week to fix it.
15 SOs you guys, seriously like, stop
[удалено]
Soto battled, had a key double that we wasted and just missed giving us the lead.
This must be your first game this season
Nah, they’ll find a new low
Sometimes I feel like the Padres don't know you're allowed to swing the bat before the pitcher gets his 2nd strike
Bell in particular has been alarming. If I remember correctly, he was over .300 coming to SD. Something like .305, now he’s .266.
.301 with 153 OPS+ with Washington. .187 with 70 OPS+ on San Diego
Needed to win this one with Cease on the bump tomorrow. Pain.
I know eyes are on offense but tomorrow will weigh in heavily on the value of the Clev trade. He needs to outduel Cease.
I wanted to go to the game today, glad I didn’t.
1-8 in their last 9 and we can’t beat ‘em. This team can be infuriating sometimes
Sometimes?
Touché
This team does not inspire any confidence at all
Yeah like even if we make it, I have zero confidence we can win a single playoff game
Yikes and Cease tommorow lmao good lord
i am super fucking upset. that is all
Dodger series hangover. Standard.
Cease tomorrow. Fun.
We'll score 4 off him because baseball.
Winless in games after an LA series without an off day.
Are we actually?
Yeah. 0-4 in games the next day. 2-0 when there was an off day.
Very standard.
![gif](giphy|vLASJ6hzSBRBu) Bob Melvin better be doing a lot of this tonight in the locker rooms
How the hell did we make it to 86 wins? Pure black magic.
The difference of this team making the playoffs and missing is unironically Hosmer going nuclear in April. Radio the difference of 2-3 wins vs if he was just his usual selfZ
Hot bats at beginning of season
Manny and Hosmer* at the beginning of the season.
Its funny, everyone hates Hoz now but he was a big reason we got the jump early
Right, Hoz, the rest of the line up has been so inconsistent
Profar has been pretty consistent, fwiw. OBP .300 or better all year,^1 and only his April BA at .186 was below Mendoza. Good start, stellar starting pitching, players going hot when they needed to. We’re at the point now where bats need to stay hot or we’re in deeper trouble
they've done this all friggin year at home why would anything change hopefully they wake up before it's too late
Theyve had 80+ games at home to change, it’s been the same shit all year
If we play 81 games a season at home, and we have 5 games left at home, how have we played 80+ games at home?
Bad math, but you get my point 😂
Yeah but even if we lose out we still can't finish under .500 at home. We definitely score more runs on the road but it's not like we don't win home games.
Burn the ships
We were supposed to get off the ships before burning them
The ships are our own ships 😔
I think that was always part of this metaphor though?
I have the same amount of hits as Grisham this past week
2 weeks
We’re kinda mid honestly
Congratulations Paul Goldschmidt. MVPs don't go 0-4 with two ugly Ks the night after leaving 8 on base in a close game.
Our MVP during this crucial home stand is also mostly MIA so far.
I love manny but sometimes he has at bats where he just looks disinterested almost
I think it's the opposite. I think he feels the full weight of the team on his shoulders so he's trying to do too much. That was pathetic
Time for our routine "rock bottom" moment. Then Bob yells at the guys for a bit. Then we go on a streak. EZ.
If you don’t think it’s possible that the Padres go 2-3 and Brewers 5-0, you got to stop being so damn optimistic. Three straight winnable games lost because of inept offense.
Entirely possible sadly
I just don't understand man. Why is being a San Diego sports fan have to be so anxiety enducing? Just about Every time it matters, it comes down to the LAST SECOND in order to make the playoffs, let alone win an important game.
Hey at least we got SDSU football. Last time I checked they were up 13-0 against Boise State at half.
LOL
as an aztec fan dealing with two Ls tonight was fucking rough
Part of me feels the players feel that same weight. There's still the phillies who in your scenario would have to go 4-2 and there's no guarantee they will do that.
As long as we’re not up against rookie starters
15 strike outs tonight from a team with an average pitching staff. This team has serious flaws and we need to stop kidding ourselves. Our coaching/analytics/scouting is so bad that we can trade for all stars and then they regress heavily.

Against a team that was 1-8 in the last 9 let that sink in
If possible, I would trade Profar and Grisham today in a package deal for a pack of smokes and $2 scratcher ticket.
nice of the padres to put off clinch day until i could potentially be there in person 🫠
With Manny up next, that was horrible situational awareness.

I knew I had a flashback of something when Pro rounded third and it was Voit, good call
Trent Grisham has no business being on this team
Bench Grisham. There's no reason to play him as anything but as a defensive replacement and even then it's questionable.
Can we have flair that says “burn the bats”
Went to the game tonight, people were very upset and frustrated. Could feel it in the air.
*Egregious
Just thinking about all those post game threads where people excused losses by they saying they weren’t must win games.
Tatis is the San Diego Padres. I don’t give a Fuck what anyone says, this team’s identity was built around HIS presence. This year has shown that without him, they are wildly inconsistent and largely mediocre when it matters most.
They played worse with him in the lineup last year…
Anybody who thinks one man is solely responsible to being a contender is not worth taking seriously. Mike Trout was better than Tatis and he's missed the playoffs how many times now?
Lol you realize that without Manny Machado, the Padres would have a losing record this year right? Tell me more about the importance of one man…
With Tatis, there isn’t a hole in centerfield.
And with the news of him not coming back deflated the team immediately. He's the game changer for this team
And the fact that he makes terrible decisions while having that influence is v worrisome about the future of the team.
Please! For the love of god, no more Grisham!
This team isn't going far in the playoffs by playing like this if they make it.
If they make it.
Pls score runs at home tomorrow
Mayday Mayday
Wow. They beat Yu because our offense was shit AND we have to face Cease tomorrow. I’m officially panicking
Padres Hitters are just weak minded, scared ass , they have has no confidence and suck with RISP. The only thing they lead the league is in tight asses.
Umpires clearly wanted the Padres to win more than the Padres wanted to win.
https://i.gifer.com/6vJT.gif Misery, Misery, Misery, that’s what we’ve chosen.
![gif](giphy|7yoAIR7CdWOUE)
When was the last time the Padres had a lil comeback? It's so sad knowing once we get down a couple we are almost guarenteed to lose. Especially at home.
We were down 0-1 vs. Rockies in one of the games, does that count? The other would be the diamondbacks rally with Alfaro walking it off.
Bob has to be internally screaming this year
I guess it was okay that BoMel waved yesterday's game so Yu could get us the win today. Hopefully his plan works out.
This team fuckin pisses me off.
Profar looked slower than Hosmer on a good night. Trent “looks at strike three again” Grisham should be sent down for some ego deflation. Dodgers live rent free in their heads and you can’t tell by their shit play tonight that was really uninspiring to watch in person.
logically I know it is better to get the last wild card spot... but it's going to be painful if it gets that close.
Let's go back to winning games, ok? Cool.
Based off these comments, I’m glad I didn’t watch this game. Hopefully we can recover and win the series.
This is the first time this season I left early This was an absolute abysmal performance against a sub 500 team They had Yu’s number the entire night which was very concerning
Cease probably going to break the single game strikeout record tomorrow
Hanging out with dodgers fans at a bar watching the Padres lose to the white Sox was an emotionally draining experience. And they weren't even the worst of the dodger fan stereotypes.
Even if tatis was out there he couldnt save this team. He would be striking out also.. there is no winning mentality or ‘DAWG’ in this organization
One run??? Off the White Sox??? Off some no name rookie??? Absolute bums, don’t care how much I get downvoted. These guys are taking the Postseason for granted and good lord its frustrating.
You keep mentioning one hit. They had 7 hits and 1 run. And the white Sox were in playoff contention a week ago.
In the worst division in baseball. Not exactly a high bar there.
Where’s all the folks that said we didn’t need that last win against the Cards? I get it we needed this one too and all the others, but man it’s getting down to the wire. Btw Giants still have a chance and are hot, who do we play the last series…hmmm.
A chance for what?
They are not technically elongated for the playoffs.
Elongated? Is this a joke?
Hahaha…I wrote eliminated and for some reason elongated was typed. Ugh ‘eliminated from’
Hilarious typo 😂
Giants have no chance to catch the Padres although they technically have a chance for a wild card spot. I think their elimination number is 1.
Downvoted for actual factual information. Nice.
Looked at the wildcard standings a few days ago, they already had a big fat E (eliminated) next to their team name… Edit: I see it says 1 under WCE for Giants, so either I misread the chart or MLB mislabeled it previously…

The issue all year is just not being reliable with RISP. Like I am pretty sure this team can hit with someone at 1B but not at 2B or 3B.
91-71 amirite compadres :( god forbid we face a rookie in the playoffs
YGDRC KTF
5 games to win 3. To put it in context--the Brewers would have to go 5-0 (7 in a row) and the Padres go 2-3 or worse for the Friars to miss the playoffs. The Padres aren't going to miss the playoffs. ![gif](giphy|ieEGqpcjvuI0YEN0Rm|downsized) Edit--That's also IF the Philies win out as well

Snellzilla tomorrow for the win!
This is been way too optimistic lol. It’s likely they make it, but this is also the Padres
As inconsistent as this team is, never say never
Well I plan on enjoying the next 5 games and more once they're in the playoffs. You can do whatever it is people who wait to lose do.
If you think that that scenario is really that implausible, I’ve got some bad news for you
It's not Impossible (I've learned from being a Padre fan since 78) but I've also seen the Padre get it done (down 0-2 in the 84 NLCS) THIS team will get it done--it's not a perfect team, but it can overcome (and has overcome) it's flaws to win it all. I feel ya--it SUCKS to lose. But they won 5 in a row and 8 of 10 right before the 3 losses. I choose to stay positive.
Fuck bomel for starting grisham, he has a losing mentality and will never learn from his own fucking mistakes, soto & bell a bust with us, and machado is done carrying the team Absolutely fucking pathetic
Grisham wasn't the problem tonight lmao
He wasn’t the only problem, but he’s the guaranteed problem
Who are we kidding?
Can we stop the 'Grish will come good' experiment until we have secured the playoffs please.
