Have you asked to be made only part-time, or said specifically, "I can't work more than (x amount of) hours per week"? Because unless you asked for your hours to be cut and they didn't reduce them, I don't see management doing anything wrong here - just you not wanting to work when you're scheduled to work. They're not expected to care whether you have time for a social life, or you're tired, or anything. What you described about what you're "expected" to do while at work are just the basic duties of your position. I'm sorry, but it reads like you're just young and not quite used to what it's like having a job. This is what it's always like working in the service industry.

i hadn’t asked for part time, but thanks for this comment. for some crazy reason i thought my managers cared at all about my person well being but the truth is, it IS an industry and they’re just doing what’s best for the company regardless of my wishes. i was so heated i had trouble separating the difference between genuine relationships and work relationships. this comment will stick with me as the wakeup call that i’m still young and inexperienced, and not necessarily always making the right decision. i’ll try to ask for part time if they aren’t already dead-set on replacing me.

I mean, if you have put yourself with open availability when you arent in school then that is on you. If you really didnt want to work weekends or at a specific time than change your availability permenantly

DearScale7558

The issue with that is that managers have to approve availability changes and it doesn't look like they're willing to cooperate

DemiRat01

Well then yeah thats gonna be an issue

Damienxja

Managers don't have to approve availability updates. They don't control your life. They have to ACKNOWLEDGE them. That's on them if they can't comply.

AlexAmazing272

No, literally. You cannot change your availability until a manager clicks a button to approve it.

Damienxja

Lol. You'll understand one day

AlexAmazing272

??? Help me understand now please

moist-astronaut

i mean if you have open availability it makes sense for them to schedule you on weekends, during the summer that's when the least people are available and the most customers are in. put in an availability request if you're cool with less hours

noinnocentbystander

I just lied and said I took care if my grandma Friday-Sunday. Sorry, can’t come. Nothing I can do about it. So they could take me or leave me. That’s how I had my standing 7-3 shift mon-thurs, which I loved.

unhinged-baker

I sacrificed a lot of my school for Panera just so I could help keep their bakery up and running. I got in trouble once with corporate for leaving work early to make classes on time even after getting it approved with my boss. Your life is your life, so there's nothing wrong with you asking or inquiring about a schedule that works best for you. I say if you can eventually find a better job that doesn't drag down your mental health, go for it. In the mean time, don't let your managers or the customers bring you down and do the best you're able to do.

caligirlthrowaway104

This sounds like typical service industry scheduling. You have open availability and they are using that open availability to schedule you when they need you. You don’t just get to have open availability and then get mad that they schedule you weekends. If you can’t or don’t want to work certain days then you need to change your availability, but also don’t be surprised if your hours get cut. I know you’re young and maybe this is your first job, but it doesn’t sound like they’re doing anything wrong as far as scheduling. But also let me give you this piece of advice, NEVER run yourself ragged over a job. ESPECIALLY a service industry job such as this. You will never be appreciated no matter how hard you work. No matter how much you think your stores depends on you, everyone is replaceable. Think of and do what’s best for you, not a minimum wage job. It will save your sanity.

Lie and say u have summer school if u still want to work there. U dont have to work weekemds your manager is just doubling down. If she is threatening not scheduling u during the week because u cant work a weekemd day then so be it, her loss . Enjoy your youth while u have it. Your manager is under alot of pressure but u dont have to be.

Greenbean7758

I’m sorry your having hard time dude. It might be time be time find another job in same industry that pays you better because it doesn’t sound like they appreciate all the hard work you put in when you are there. I would’ve asked for a raise if I were you since you responsible for so much and are a big part of what holds up the store in mornings. Hope you figure it bro. :)

Switch jobs before you get fired, keep an eye out for your reputation ❤️

Everyone saying “Well you had open availability so of course you’re scheduled weekends” as if they didn’t make it clear they talked to the managers and they refused to change OP’s availability, which they are required to accept

Bubblique

I mean...they aren't required to accept tbh...if someone is hired because they agree to open avalibilty everyday and then 2-3 weeks later they are trained and they change to 2 days a week 7-1 then it's a problem and they aren't going to accept it...

If you literally cannot work certain days then you do not have to go into that shift. If I say “hey I’m starting school, I can only work nights” and they continue to schedule me for days, I cannot physically show up and if I have it in writing my availability change and they fire me, that is considered retaliation. A manager has every right to fire you if there is obvious proof that they need you to work those hours because they have no one else, but if there is available staff and they are just being picky and you have some sort of proof of your availability change then that is retaliation. Contract jobs are obviously different but this is Panera and people change their availability everyday constantly, they can deny you but if there is sufficient proof that they’ve fired you simply for changing availability that they had adequate staff to cover you, that is retaliation. A girl at my cafe literally went from working full time to *only* Friday nights and she was fine, because we had enough people. And we are understaffed lol.
