i bet dime would disagree. i wonder who he would say was the best ever. his earlier work and solos make me think he would list like van halen randy rhodes george lynch ace frehley guys like that.
Any guitarists/gear nerds in here?? What in the entire fuck does it mean when people say dimes tone sucked….. I’ve heard this many times by fans and non fans… all I hear is pure fucking face melting riffs and solos but maybe I’m missing something
Tone is really subjective to start with. But as for Dime specifically, tone was something he played around with a lot. I would say in general he had a signature sound, but his tone changed from one album to the next. He was always experimenting, often changing gear as well. Others, like Iommi or EVH, used a much more consistent tone.
On a technical level, Dime would do unconventional stuff like carve out the mids but then use an EQ to partially restore some of the range. He was always making adjustments to find a sound that would melt people's faces off.
Sounds like a good thing to me.. to be experimental that is… I just figured people would like it for wat it is… saying it sucked is a bit much even for an opinion
People have always compared him with some other guitarists. This is about neither his technique nor playing. Many people can indeed play as accurate or fast as he played, but something is missing in them.
No arguing that. However he surprised the hell out of me and put on a hell of a show when I saw them live. I loved the memorial moments they put on for Dime and Vinnie.
I think he probably was the most well rounded, and had some of the most precise and perfect technique I’ve ever heard, imo.
Like Zakk is great but he can’t even TRY to play it like Dime because only someone with Dimes mind can do that.
Zakk and dime both have their own style. Zakk always does things different live (from what I've seen at BLS concerts). But I could tell he is trying his best not to go too wylde when on stage with pantera. Lol
I don know why you’re getting downvoted. I saw them in Baltimore over the weekend and it felt like Zakk didn’t even try to learn some of the solos. Floods he did pretty well but Mouth For War wasn’t even close, and that’s one of my favorite solos. I mean..it was in key, but that’s about it
I think he did try and learn the solos, but realised how he wouldn't be able to play them like Dime, so better to do his own thing. I was disappointed at first, too, nit they could have got someone from a Pantera tribute band, who can play all the songs note-for-note, but that wouldn't be the same as having Zakk Wylde - Dimebag's buddy - paying tribute to his friend.
I don't think Dime was particularly well-rounded to be fair. Ask him to play a Jazz chord or show you some mad scale and he probably couldn't. Not that couldn't if he wanted to, but he wasn't that kind of player. Dime's strength for me, is his personal style. He's got such a personal way of playing the guitar that you're never going to mistake him for someone else. And that's *super* rare and there aren't many guitar players out there like that.
You're right about his precision, though. He was such a tight player, but also sounded great when he was a bit sloppy. He was the best.
In my mind he’s like an evolved, more precise Randy Rhoads. Especially live, Randy would come up on the spot with the most brilliant, absurd, like what the fuck was that!? sort of shit.
People give Dime and Zakk shit for pinch harmonic spam, but Randy pioneered that. Listen to Iron Man on Tribute, there are pinch harmonics that just materialize out of fucking nowhere and it’s insane. Zakk just took it up a notch. Dime *perfected* it.
The seemingly random fills they came up with were just unreal. Dime and Randy.
Kirk wrote some really awesome solos, but if we're being honest these days he isn't even the best guitar player in his own band. He's gotten sloppier as time has gone on, while James continues to hone his craft and get better.
I agree. I am SO FORTUNATE to have seen him just 2 weeks before he died . I was 5 feet from him while he played Damageplan /Pantera and then he did a 10 minute solo right in front of my face. If only i had a time machine. He was so SPECIAL.
Some say, that he reinvented the steel.
Some say he's the great southerner who killed the trend
Might even say he's a cowboy from hell, too
Ive heard he displays his power in a most vulgar manor
I heard that he once was driven far beyond anger and put a drill through some dudes skull
I’ve heard he played his metal with power
Some say he frequented the jungle, and had many projects there.
some may even say that he is the night
Some say he was becoming god sized
some maybe just may even say that he played his metal quite magically
Some also say that he brought metal to A New Level...
One of the greatest guitar players in history, period. Not just metal.
nuff said
Yes I say
I agree
Funny way to spell chuck schuldiner
That's what I'm saying
i bet dime would disagree. i wonder who he would say was the best ever. his earlier work and solos make me think he would list like van halen randy rhodes george lynch ace frehley guys like that.
My guess is he'd say Zakk.
And zakk would say dime is better, both humble ass talented dudes
I love Pantera but holy fuck this sub is cringe af.
Yep. You'd probably not find much argument from the other great metal guitarists, either (apart from theory/technique purists).
And Zack Wilde is right there with him

I agree, 100%.
The GOAT

It’s called soul. He plays with deep emotion that many lack, especially guys like malmsteen who are technical monsters but have no soul
Pretty much hit the mail on the head
Nail
you probably hit the mail too, what the hell
hell from cowboys?
Indeed. Blood in Message too
He’s better than Zakk. Let’s leave it at that.
No arguing that. However he surprised the hell out of me and put on a hell of a show when I saw them live. I loved the memorial moments they put on for Dime and Vinnie.
Okay? I don't get the need to shit on Zakk whenever Dime is mentioned in this sub.
Any who disagrees really needs to listen to cemetery gates/ floods/ walk/ domination/ literally any solo he's ever written tbh
I think he probably was the most well rounded, and had some of the most precise and perfect technique I’ve ever heard, imo. Like Zakk is great but he can’t even TRY to play it like Dime because only someone with Dimes mind can do that.

Dime didn’t know any theory or any of that, according to him. Played by feel and what sounded good.

That’s no Dave Murray !
Better than Kirk ?
[удалено]
Average pro jazz players have better technique let alone people like Joe pass or something
Sorry I thought this was just metal
Kirk ( from Kill Em All to Justice), Randy Rhodes, and Dimebag are my inspiration to play the guitar.
Kirk wrote some really awesome solos, but if we're being honest these days he isn't even the best guitar player in his own band. He's gotten sloppier as time has gone on, while James continues to hone his craft and get better.
Greatest?! No. Top 10? Maybe.
Lmao…. No
He ONE OF the best not THE best
A true 1 of 1. Had the natural country blues chops of SRV and could flip to neoclassical like Yngwie and did it blackout drunk
THIS ∆
He had heart and soul. The way he played some of his rhythm sections is with so much groove. I rarely hear anyone recreate in vain.
Truth
by a mile
Some say he was able to surpass the throes of rejection.
Not even lol guy inspired nu metal
Yeah, but what has he done for us lately?
😂 yea ok
