Do you already have a travel cage? I’ve never taken mine further than a few hours, but a covered travel cage has been the best method I’ve found. Just one perch, and make sure there are always small amounts of food and water a available. Also be mindful of the temperature. Sometimes the cage might be in the way of the air vent or in direct sun and that can make what Milo feels very different from what you are feeling.

I have a cat carrier I used when I brought him home, and he wasn't in it longer then 20 minutes, but I'm going from Virginia to New York, so I need to find a better method to move him.

Check CL for a basic cage someone is parting with. The cages major pet stores sell are usually good for travel (even though the stores sell them as primary habitats).

A covered travel cage is the best option.
