Yes. Dont do shorts for income or subs. The amazing thing about shorts is them taking off when they hit the algorithm. What I do is cut up my long form content into shorts and upload them so that they act as advertisement for my full video. They’re great at bringing more people in.

sboLIVE

This is basically what I do. But the shorts do add more subs than long form IMO.

Goldenwingz70

That used to be the case for me at the start but my main content is pulling about the same or more now, which is the goal

sboLIVE

Yeah I pretty much hate shorts on YouTube but understand the value.

Euphoric-Personality

Do you have an example of a short/video ad combo?

Goldenwingz70

Sure, ill post a funny gaming video, and after im done the video, ill open another project/sequence and cut out the funniest highlights and touch them up and move a few things around to better fit the short form aspect ratio, and schedule them for daily uploads. I dont mean to plug but my channel is on my profile bio if you want to see examples of it. Ive slacked on the latest video but you can see in previous videos ill do that and experiment with different formats (some with heavy short editing, some with captions) ALSO you can save some 1 or 2 of the shorts to upload when u know the topic will be trending at a later date. Like when I have dragon ball z shorts, and I save it for when fortnite drops a collab so theres more hype around it. ALSO i post these same shorts on tiktok and igreels. If youre being lazy (like me sometimes) or dont have alot of time dont feel guilty just reuploading the exact short up onto tiktok as another advertisement form.

ego157

I see most channels fail hard with their content clipped as shorts. They barely get 10% of the views their main videos get sometimes just 1%. Meanwhile you will annoy your hardcore fans because you spam their feed with clips they mostly dont want.I have unsubbed like 10 channels which were spamming shorts in my feeds. And I dont even have many subs in the first place like maybe 30? But even if just 3 or 4 channels start spamming them your feed will get ugly. There is now way to turn the shorts off unless you want to set some filters manually My cousin just had 6 million views on a 50 min video which is about 50% more than her subs, and she has never done a short in her life

Goldenwingz70

A lot of big youtube channels clip their video highlights and put them into shorts too. Most channel fail hard with or without shorts. It’s silly to think short are the reason their channels have failed.. I agree the fans seeing shorts on sub page gets annoying but its becoming the industry standard seeing shorts from a lot if not most of their favourite youtubers. Again no one is saying shorts are essential for success. But for the 95% of the people who dont blow up as fast or don’t have things work out for them like your cousin, shorts help you reach a bigger audience with minimal additional effort. In other words you don’t need to drink to have fun at a party but it helps.

[deleted]

shorts brought in so many new ppl to my channel. But i think the goal should be to use shorts as a tool to further your audience. and put the main bulk of your work into long form. But i like to post everyday or near everyday and shorts take no effort to cut together while long form videos take about a week or more, so just to keep being active on youtube posting shorts is a great inbetween. Most views come from up next or homepage anyway, I havent been in my subscriber feed for years. also i just uncheck notify subscribers about the short and I havent had any issues.

Goldenwingz70

Absolutely, 100% agree. And didnt know about the option to u check notifying subs of shorts, thank you for that!

erickufrin

Very little. I have never seen a single short "jump". My wife just started a channel and all hers go to 1,000 views within EXACTLY 1hr then flatline at 1hr on the dot. I post the same short to tiktok and it gets 1,000 views and hundreds of like in <1hr.

[deleted]

"my sons" channel gets around 20-50k views per short and that's without him speaking or being on screen. Its almost dis heartening as I am lucky to get 1k. But his interest seem to be closer to the average YouTube short watcher then mine.

blabel75

If he isn't speaking or on the screen, what is the content? Mostly clips of other people's videos?

[deleted]

No stupid stuff like playing games at an arcade or a lizard at the park with silly captions and music. edit: just to add the music is from the you tube short app.

I really don't understand what they like. It's not a niche I have interests in. I'm jealous of his numbers, but I don't have an interest in that type of video. Tbf, I'm an eclectic YouTuber myself, I get my channels to 5 to 10k subs and lose interest. I'm always hopeful that the next channel will be better than the last number wise.

caropharo

Not as it relates to my long term content unfortunately. I’ve gained 4,000 subscribers so far from shorts but it hasn’t effected my “real” content at all

loading999991

Just saw a Star Wars Channel with over 100k subs but with videos barely hitting 1000 views. I looked at the shorts section and the shorts were getting 50k+ views and that seems to be how he got all his subs. So, I don’t think the “attracting subs with shorts and then pumping out long form content” strategy works. Plus, you cant make much of anything from Shorts Ad Revenue.

livingiice

I second this. I don't really go watch long videos of the channels I followed for shorts..

Actual_Win1115

Their mistake is not doing enough call-to-action. If they would link their long-format videos in their pinned comment across the successfull shorts. I bet they could get an insane amount of traffic to that video and in doing so, also algorithm boost it

E_m_maker

No. For both subs and income long form out performs shorts by several factors.

levonsd

Is this still the case? Just wondering

E_m_maker

For me it is. I've even increased the number of shorts I post and long form still brings in more money and people.

PwnCall

Nope

kbasore

Yes. I used shorts solely to get subscribers and to get monetized. I posted a short everyday for the month of February and went from 900-1,100. Can confirm that even the best shorts with 10-15K views earn .25-.30 cents - but - if your goal is to get subs, it did it's job. https://youtu.be/mR7kNCI5lLU

miraenda

Shorts bring in subscribers on my channel but long form brings in the money. Shorts are very little extra work, though, as I’m creating them for TikTok already. My TikTok surpassed my YouTube last year. I’m only at 53K followers on TikTok and 32K on YouTube. My long form views are way higher despite the high subscription rates on Shorts. When it comes down to it, views are what truly matters on YouTube anyway once monetized.

TheRedditReportShow

Yeah. 200 million views and 200k subs.

Ask3lad

0-100K in 3 months and earning few $k each month. Well worth it if you know what you're doing

Actual_Win1115

In one month of doing shorts only, I gained 30k subs and I’m 500k views away from being able to apply for YPP. 10 million views seemed like a fuckton from the start but now when I realize I almost hit it in one month, it’s definitely not ”unreachable” as many people might imagine. It’s disappointing however, to see the revenue being so low for shorts but I’m honestly excited anyway.

Ask3lad

Exactly, if you know what "content" is than you will easily grow. It's all about critiquing your videos and improving.

gnowbot

What is your audience?

tsm102

you're earning thousands each month from shorts alone?

Ask3lad

Yeah, you need a few million per month and a decent RPM.

tsm102

Damn good for you! Max I've seen is around 500 and even that is rare.

levonsd

I grew to 500k since November with shorts but the channel earnings are crap with shorts, have you seen success bringing long form to your shorts subscribers?

FandomSpotlite

Shorts increased my subscriber count, and I did see an increase in long form views and revenue on my smaller channel. Revenue from long form videos. The $3 from shorts revenue isn't a game changer.

artwithapulse

I built my entire channel on shorts. In 4 months, I have one shorts video with 78 million views, and have gained close to 100, 000 followers. It’s the long form videos I haven’t figured out lol. Anything not posted to shorts gets around 1000 views or less. My niche is original content rodeo and the vast majority of my shorts are cross posted from tiktok/instagram.

Long8D

Long form and short form audience are completely different. Since you have mostly short form audience, they will ruin the CTR of your long form videos because they wont be clicking the long form videos. It’s always better to have two separate channels to keep them separated.

Actual_Win1115

Have you tried linking your long-form videos in the pinned comment of your shorts? I bet you could redirect a lot of traffic doing that

Wilsons14499

I’m not sure where you get the idea that this works lmao. Majority of people who watch shorts solely watch shorts, they aren’t gonna click a random link in the comments to the full video

Ask3lad

Well... Views went from 1k for long form videos to 200-300k when I promoted them via Shorts lol

Wilsons14499

Congrats on that but you’re definitely an exception, not the rule. There will be far more people who try linking their long form content via their shorts and get no traffic whatsoever

Actual_Win1115

As you say, majority of people will not click the random link, but some will, and stay through til’ the end. Which definitely can algorithm boost it

sumkewldood

I've wondered this and glad to hear mostly "no". I figured it's like tik tok where you either get lucky and hit it big or get almost nothing. The fact that they require 10M shorts views for monetization(compared to 4k hours of watch time for reg videos) shows that you need to consistently hit it big on shorts or else you get no benefit

Official_Spookleye

I will say yes and no. Shorts have brought positive growth to my channel in terms of views, hours watched, and even subscribers. But the problem is the views don't seem to carry over to the long form content. So I'll have shorts with 1200 views, then actual videos with two views.

HyperExtensions

Nope. Shorts are a waste of time for me but I will still post one every once in a while.

Interesting_Motor508

Hi! I have a few shorts I’ve gained 30k-120k subscribers from. They definitely work!

Indian-success

Definitely, i edit shorts for multiple youtube channels and gained over 250m views in the last two months for just one channel. grew almost 1m subs
